  • In this video I build a drawer system in a 2018 double cab Toyota Tacoma. The truck is equipped with a Go Fast Campers V2. This project was all done using simple tools and minimal materials you can find at local hardware stores. Watch my build process over a few days and see the awesome finished product!

      Nice congrats on the V2 purchase. Yeah give it a try. Even if you mess up the wood part you can still use the drawer slides again if you hire someone to rebuild the wood part. Sure, you will have wasted some time and money on the wood but the expensive slide part will be reusable.

      Thanks! I can't take full credit for that... I was talking to my dad on the phone (a 50 year contractor) talking about ripping these slots with the router and he recommending doing them as a full sheet first so I would get perfect alignment of the slots later down the line during assembly. I guess you learn a trick or two with that many years under the belt.

    I’ve been researching all day on how to build these. I have to say your system is the cleanest, esthetically pleasing and really the nicest. I have a Tacoma, but do you have a video on the Tundra? I want to build a full two drawer system. I’m gonna build a dog barrier on top, so my family can take our 4 dogs camping. Anyway, great content, cheers.

    • @prospectoverland
      @prospectoverland  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks so much. Hope it will be helpful. I didn’t make a video for mine. My tundra was the first one I’ve done and focus just on figuring it out. This Tacoma was the second one. You can in theory just double what I did. Just take the distance between your wheel well and split it in half. It will force you to make your drawers a certain width only. Don’t forget to account for thickness of plywood and drawer sliders. About a 1.5” per side.
      Hope it works out well for the family and dogs.

    Thinking about adding something like this to replace the bed mat for flat floor and be able to mount fridge slide when i get my GFC. My question is with using the D rings to secure the base to the bed did you have to get longer hardware or did the factory D ring bolts work with the 3/4 inch ply wood?

    Great proyect, Actually the most usefull so far (searching for DIY versions of the Decked system).
    Now, A couple things I saw that I personally think could be better... The handle for the drawer is great, but if it gets stuck in the close position good luck (a simple combination of too much weight and the truck facing down an incline can do it easily). I think you could moove the slide rails up and place 2 simple handles (like a cabinet handle or something like that) so that when you gran the handles you can unlock the slides with your pinky and pull inmediatelly with both hands or with one if you prefer.
    The other one I see is that in my personal opinion, You could make it slimer (like lower) in order for it to allow as much of the original functionality of the bed as possible. why? just because having taller sides on the bed makes it easyer to place some things there without being worried about them falling out easily. Adding to it I would personally duplicate the support bracing you made for those "ammo can" cubbies in the other side, just for convenience because that way you can add annother large piece of ply and have a flat top on the same level if you want to or need it.
    Personally, I'm gonna do it very similar to your proyect for my dads build just so he can have all his stuff available, secure, dry and out of the way when he doesn´t need it. But keeping as much functionality in the bed as possible.

    I see a lot of builds using this long drawer slide out method that only opens if the tailgate is down. A better option would be for there to be 3-4 smaller drawers that open into the back of the bed or a swing up option for the bed to access the space under the bed. This way the space is usable when the back is closed up.

    @Prospect Overland - Doing my buildout on a short bed Tacoma now, dual side by side drawers. Thanks for such a good video! I have similar slides as you (Ovis 48"). For install, did you just rest the slides on the bottom of the drawer box and then screw them into the sides of the drawer box? Then, once they were installed, did you just set your drawer in the drawer box or did you space it off the bottom a little bit? I have a sheet of 1/8" wood, I was thinking of dropping my drawer on that for the spacer.

    • @prospectoverland
      @prospectoverland  Рік тому

      You nailed it! I spaced mine up just a little. I think I used a door shim maybe but a 1/8 ply is perfect! Yes set the slide in the box first and screw to the box. Then set the draw in between the freshly mounted slides and screw to the drawer. You will have to screw a few of them through the small holes in the actual metal slide. They and opening to drill through.

    Wondering about weight, cost (drawer slides are expensive) and availability/cost of Baltic Birch ply these days compared to a Decked System for Standard two drawer applications.

    • @prospectoverland
      @prospectoverland  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks. My two drawer system I had in my tundra was heavy for sure. The one big down side. The ply wood and the drawer slides are not light weight items for sure. But….so much more storage space than a decked system. I measured the interior space of decked vs interior space of mine and it was a big difference. Plus decked system had slanted drawer walls which I wanted square/vertical walls.

    • @dmwi1549
      @dmwi1549 7 місяців тому +1

      Good points.
      I had a single drawer in my 2006 Tundra. 1/2” ply with 2x6 drawer sides. 75 lbs for drawer, more for the deck which was 2x4’s on the bedliner pockets and 1/2” ply over.
      It worked but it all adds up.

    Very very nice drawer system! What would you charge if somebody would want the same exact setup as the Tacoma?

      Thank you, appreciate it. Probably in the $3k range. It took a lot of hours.

      Google OVIS locking slides. I used 60” slides but they make different lengths depending on your set up.

    Could you link the two latches together using a riser bar or small angle iron or something? Other than that, pretty cool 👍

    • @prospectoverland
      @prospectoverland  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah not a bad idea. Maybe even just use that grab bar as the handle to pull the drawer out as well and skip the spring loaded black handle in the middle. Or just go with only one locking slide. I just wasn’t sure of one lock would be secure enough but maybe it would be.

    Very Nice! Where is your build video for the double drawer in your Tundra?

    • @prospectoverland
      @prospectoverland  5 місяців тому

      I didn’t do a video of that build. It was my first one and figured I should practice once before I film it. So this Tacoma video was my second one.

    Awesome job! I must have missed it but how is the whole thing anchored to the bed so it doesn't tip out?

    • @prospectoverland
      @prospectoverland  Рік тому

      Thanks!!! The two bed bolts in the rear of the bed in the corners (by the tail gate). Then the front of the bed I did to "L" brackets from the tie down points to the wood deck. Im pretty sure I showed it in the video if you check again.

    That is very nice. I am about to build something similar. What type of wood are you using, is there a parts list ?

    • @prospectoverland
      @prospectoverland  Рік тому

      Thank you. Good luck with the project. I don't have a full parts list I'm sorry. Drawer slides are from OVIS.com 60" locking slides. beyond that it was just little handles and nobs and stuff from a mixture of amazon and Home Depot.
      The wood is baltic birch with a clear varnish I applied. I think I showed the can in the video.

      Thanks,
      These are the ones I used for my build. But make sure this length will work for your exact situation. They have other length options

      The other drawer handles and small things are just on amazon and whatever appearance and function preference you like.

    In the process of building, got the floor and walls built. Having doubts on drawer slides. Any advice on mounting those? What size screws did you use? Anything you would’ve done differently?

    • @prospectoverland
      @prospectoverland  Рік тому

      I think I used 3/4 wood screws. The thickness of the slide material took up enough of the screw length that the tip of the screw didn't go all the way through the 3/4 plywood drawer side.
      Just make sure you hold the bottom of the drawer up off the bottom plate of wood that's in the bed of the truck. I gave myself about a 1/4" gap underneath to account for and variation or small pebbles going underneath and not creating a binding issue. So grab yourself something that you can lay under the drawer as a temporary spacer to hold that gap while you screw the drawer slides in.

    How much weight do you think the drawers can hold? Also how much weight can you put on top?
    Thinking of using the drawers to hold my mechanic tools instead of puting them in the cab.

      I did the top of my tundra with 1/2 ply and i can tell it’s a little weaker than this 3/4 I did on the Tacoma. But I’ve had three adults on top of my 1/2 set up so a few hundred pounds…maybe 600. So I would think this 3/4 set up could certainly hold a little more then that.
      The actual drawer…..I’m not certain no way for me to know. The metal slides are rated at 500lb. But would the wood drawer bottom hood up to that much, I don’t know.
