Transmission on 3rd gens first thing i did when i started building power years ago was lock up the tourqe converter the factory actually detunes the engines so they dont destroy the 48re trans so when you turn it up its a time bomb
Great video! Everyone: be very careful with those 'performance' air filters! They can let a lot of dirt into your engine. I researched and found out that the best filtration is from a larger, paper filter (similar to OEM). There are tests online (like the Spicer Duramax air filter test) that show the different efficiencies of several filters. My 'test' was wiping the inlet and impeller of my turbo with a white paper towel. That lead me to get that oiled, foam filter right out of there!
The Carlie 3”lift ,with life time ball joints with the up graded OEM steering track bar , with steering box brace , and the longer front axel bars , duel steering stabilizer kit . Tracks better than new ! Oh yeah new king shocks night and day difference. I Evan got discounts on my insurance for steering performance up grade ! Loved that.
Great video I just found your channel and a month ago I bought my first diesel. I got a 2006 ram 2500 4x4 5.9 So far I have made several upgrades but the best so far was getting rid of the muffler and catalytic converter that was original. It really opened the truck up and it is totally different for the better.

Cool vid. I picked up an early 04 6 speed 3500 RWD dually. 110k miles and She's pretty much bone stock. I just removed silencer ring, intake pipe baffling and swiss cheesed the airbox along with a KN filter. Exhaust is next on my radar along with an edge juice with attitude cs2 programmer. Great advice! Cheers from Alabama.
Upgrade your steering gear box to a Red Head box along with the brace. RedHead is hand machined box to way tighter tolerance then an OEM box or a reman box. It's a must do on dodge pickups.
That new steering box I think they are the newer Dodges it is huge and for what I heard that new factory pump is way better than any rebuilt and modified pump and I sure it is very costly. But these new boxes are huge and built like a tank !!
I agree with everything but I'm not sure how I feel about the head studs. Having ARP studs on a performance motor can damage the block under certain conditions, where as keeping the stock studs will stretch and you'll loose a gasket. I think it was banks that did a video on this as well. Never seen the issue but have learned the draw back on the the ARP studs. Might be worth looking into because that's an upgrade that may not be necessary.
Good video very informative. Last spring I bought an 2003 dually 4X4 Cummins with a 6 speed manual, it has 353,000 kms on it now. I live in rural New Brunswick so the 4X4 could come in handy. The check engine light came on coming back from Ontario, engine cut out and stopped. After a few minutes fired up again and it ran fine for another 600 kms and still running fine but the light is still on. Love the truck, handles great and lots of power for me. Should I call a dealer and have it analyzed? Oil and Preston are both good.
I find it odd nothing was mentioned about the trans. being the weak point when adding power. Actually on my 06 3500HD with the HO Cummins the 'stock' computer detunes the output to protect the trans.
I have an 03 3500 with the 5.9 and I did these same 5 upgrades off the bat and really think it was a great idea. My order was the 5in straight pipe, s&b intake, fass 165, bullydog 40420 (huge mistake highly don't recommend) then I did my own form off steering (Just the 4th gen steering upgrade). Great video and really think it will help the new guys with their first 5.9.
With my S&B cold air intake i bought the lower scoop and added the AFE waste gate actuator on my 2006 5.9 and my turbo lag got way better and the AFE waste gate actuator is adjustable up to 60psi! Plus im getting upwards of 22mpg’s with my superchips tuner! It’s the cheapest one i could find and it only has 2 tunes (tow & performance).
All great upgrades, the only thing I might add is a intake elbow, I was surprised that I could actually feel a difference!! Well done, another great episode!
Nobody ever talks about the Fleece in tank a drop in unit and it has two gear motor pumps and a nice CNC top section it uses the factory lines and factory wiring harness for one pump and Fleece wiring harness to run to battery with a fuse and a relay. So what is so cool this unit has two separate pumps and a second wiring harness with two pumps running at 21 lbs and if a pump fails you have a back up pump that that’s on a separate harness with fuse and relay and one pump will 10-12 pounds of pressure. So you can drive it with plenty of fuel to run and cool your your high pressure injection pump and it has a lifetime warranty a win win situation.
Great video, like always! I was surprised at how little salt they use on the roads in Alberta. When I moved from the Maritimes, I couldn't believe how clean all the rigs were.
Do you have a “walk around” video that goes over ALL your mods (likes and dislikes and recommendations) on this truck; both performance and aesthetic? Good stuff you’ve got going!! Thanks!
I put one on both my trucks a new 1992 and a new 05 cummins change out bushings on track bar bushings to neoprene and you will feel the difference right of the bat !
Just get a Fleece in tank lift pump that has 2 gear motor pump wig 21 lb and a long 20 lb one uses the factory wiring and other pum has its own harness with fuse and relay. So if one pump goes out you have a second one to get you home .

Hey , I’m a new subscriber to your channel ! I own a 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 SLT . I have a question for you, how do I check for a blown head gasket on my 5.9L Cummins ? The reason I ask , is cause it runs a little hot , not very hot , just a little to right of center . It used to run always to the left of center . It does have 334,000 miles on it . I’m just wondering if a head gasket issue ? Please advise . Thank You !
I wonder if a stock exhaust on a 03 or 04 would help heat up the truck quicker in winter, since it would cause alittle more back pressure compared to straight through exhaust.
I have a Thomas Bus with a 5.9L 24V Cummins. It is just a tad underpowered for my application. What is the quickest cheapest way to add 50-75 hp without damaging the engine?
I was tempted to install head studs 1 by 1 without doing the head gasket when I replace injectors in the future but at 180k miles, I might as well wait to until it needs a head gasket. Your injector video made it look easy enough where doing in stages is easier on the wallet. It may be a while given even with turbo upgrade plans, I don't intend to make much power and just want to try and keep the efficiency and longevity up.
interesting. and great videos. a perspective often overlooked in pursuit of huge power increase , is the strain on engineered systems; cooling starting etc. a fun thing to consider is how to maximize the engineering that ram gave us. ok the steering is awful thats not a performance thing thats plainly a safety thing. big tires and ball joints safety again. but what about cooling for example. recently i asked myself, what would happen if i isolated all underhood heat keeping it where it belonged and then was able to influence my charge temp? that led to intercooler ideas which led to a louver center hood. isolate heat with wraps, and increase ( dramatically) airflow thru the intercooler by using engineered louvers. so far so good and ive added none of the gofast high dollar excessive accoutrements that are so popular. these additions that will strain factory parameter designs, in ways that can be counter productive. build out the factory design first. using more fuel means more heat, straining all other engine system s, especially charge air temps. back to cooling. next a water meth kit on the factory engine. every thing is still as Detroit designed it but maximizing power just from cooling down the factories idea of the proper air charge. if a trick turbo is putting hotter air through the can at higher temps are u really netting much except guaranteed increased wear if you do not address the cooling systems shortcomings first? fuel delivery. mopar hd filter water and cat main filter. but the mopar cannister one will keep your pump alive for at least 250k. the dizzingly expensive lift pumps, are so necessary with go fast parts, but is there power to be had just by maximizinf factory parts? air box. needed for high sustained rev of the engine. a factory part, but.wrap the tube to prevent heat soak ? in every case my first money goes to exhaust. i use 5" exclusively with three resonators. near factory sound with a deeper note and vastly improved flow. just sayin.... how much power could a 5.9 make just by maximizing factory parameters without destroying those parameters by using un- engineered go fast parts? i dunno. and ive never heard that discussion take place the rush has always been to alter those parameters with go fast parts, and in so doing, altering the balance of the designed package
I have to replace my fuel injectors on my baby dually. (2005 Single cab dually manuel trans) what would y’all recommend? I tow excavators, skid steers. Would like to get more horse power.
Can you do a bigger turbo on the 5.9 or do you need to do internals like a gas engine would need? Also what about the banks diff cover? Supposta lower temp?
Hey man I appreciate the video. I noticed the headlights on the truck and I have the same ones for my 04 2500 dodge ram and I’ve been having an issue where the led light in my driver side keeps flickering on and off constantly. I was wondering if you would know why that is and if you would be willing to give me some advice
Great video! I have the exact same truck and looking to put some upgrades on it. Only thing troubling me is hear they like to blow trannys with more than 50 or 60 hp past stock. What transmission would you recomend for an 03 5.9? Also is it normal for my RPM to consistently be at 2000? Thanks!
I have a g56 mecedes manual transmission in mine. The stick is amazing for pulling. Just make sure you have a good clutch in it if you're going to upgrade hp.
Love the truck man! Great video aswell. I’m curious what mudflats you have on there? One of my trucks is an early 07 and it’s running 22x14’s with 37’s. So really wanting some decent size mudflats like what’s on your truck
I have the bully dog for my 03 5.9 3500 and I only put it on the first setting, have you ever used the bully dog. And where's the expansion tube on these in the cooling system
I just bought a 2003 5.9, has a fass fuel 165, 350% S&S injectors, S&B cold air, twin borg warner 9180 turbos, ARP 625 studs, bored for industrial performance pistons, etc etc. But it doesn't have a tuner and never has. What one would you recommend? I'm in Alberta and bought this truck as it sits, have all the paperwork and receipts from previous owner.
I got the s06 on my 06 and damn it made a huge difference had to get a new clutch 3 days after uploading sw9 tho lmao but totally worth it thinking about efi live next with custom tunes or getting the TNT revo update
Quick question on your Fass system, is it ever extremely loud on yours. When I bought my 04 5.9 Cummins the fass system is extremely loud since then I have added rubber between the metal and are ganna change filters soon. Any other ideas on what would be making it so loud.
I wouldn’t recommend waiting till the HG pukes. When it goes you’re likely not going to be home and will need to be towed besides having to pay someone else to work on it
Glad I found your channel. I've got an 05 with a G56, 211000k on it. Put the bds 6" long arm in myself years ago and also the t-style drag link and tie rod plus bd steering box brace. It's my daily oil patch work truck loaded to the nines with my welding skid. I want to make this thing last forever as I'm not interested at all in the emissions bs that comes on new trucks. Next, I'm thinking of upgrading to the Howler turbo mostly to keep the 5.9 warm when I have to let it idle all day long, - 30 or just pipelining, it never comes up to temp. Do you have any advice for the shit e-brakes? Just replaced everything and still barely holds on the minimum slope of my driveway. I'm scared to adjust the cable tensioner much more and have the shoes rub too much and take out my axle seals. Great vids. Thanks. Working in the GP area.
You’re brake shoes probably aren’t tight enough, you want to set them up so they drag a little bit on the rotor, if you do that it should hold! I used to work up in GP for Nabors drilling 👍🏻
@@darkirondiesel Thanks for the reply. I did adjust the star when I installed the new shoes till I felt some drag when rotating the axle by hand. I was worried about setting to much drag and glazing the shoes. Guess I'll try again and set a bit more drag. Thanks.
I bought a new 2005 Dodge and the first thing I did as soon as the rings seated was to install an Amsoil bypass oil filter kit. It is the best pickup I've ever owned and I'll never sell it.
I have my second Dodge diesel my first a 12 valve 1992 and my second truck was a 05 5.9 6 speed manual and floor shift for 4 wheel drive and I will never sell my 4 foot long bed dullay and first year I ran Rotela oil and after that all I run is Amsoil 15-w40 and every thing in truck has Amsoil !
And I have 3 filters a big Baldwin with water separator with a drain and that is 5 micron and then it goes into my 2 micron cat filter and the a 5 micron Baldwin in factory spot with water separator and drain and a light to tell you you have water .
Hello from Texas. I have been searching for videos showing affordable 2020 Cummins 6.7 upgrades. Any suggestions? Great Videos. I learnt a lot from you brother.
I somewhat disagree do studs second after a FASS but you take the chance of warping your head or block if you over heat to much just do studs no mater what cause your not gonna get a 5.9l with low miles so a full refresh is a good thing to do if you’re gonna bring the power up at all! Then 3 intake horn and filter setup and intercooler pipes and then take care of the front end with the 09’ upgrade and the be brakes! Then if you are ready and the trucks safe tuner, injectors snd compounds!
Personally I like injectors, I have a 99 7.3 powerstroke and it rips with the injectors and tuner and my buddy's 5.9 Cummins also rips with injectors and a tuner
Just stumbled into this video, loved it! and as a result, I've ordered a BD Steering Box Stabilizer :) I have the same headlights, not that good in my opinion, but they look good :) Waiting for some parts, and I'm splitting them open to install LED projector and switchback DRL like feature.
07 5.9 with 275km worth 21k? SLT, old man owned (2nd owner, guys had it for 11 years). No tuner, stock intake. 5” exhaust into 4” muffler (guy must’ve straight piped it and then realized it was too loud for hunting). Rebuilt trans and new injectors in 2019.
Just bought one today bone stock. and completely new to diesels. Do you have to tune even if it's just an exhaust upgrade? Or when should you start to look into a tune
Thanks for the video! Everything you mentioned is stuff I’m working toward. I was torn between the Fass and air dog... have you had any issues with the water filter on the Fass? How often do you change it? These videos help me a lot on mine, cause I’m new to the 5.9 and I have an 03 that I’m slowly building.
I dont like how if you go with either fass or airdog, you have filters exposed. All it takes is a rock to hit and puncture one of those filters and you're shut down right there. I went with cats filter and water separator that mounts up high in between the transfer case and fuel tank. You remove your drivers seat rear bolts and put the longer ones that are provided through and mount the bracket and you're all set. Then I got one of the best in tank pumps made by Fleece
If you put steering brace on your truck when new you won’t need to change your gear box and I won’t use redhead any way when dodge makes a massive steering gear box that works better and is brand new not a rebuilt factory gear box .
First mod needs to be built trans. No matter how much power you build it for. Putting all these mods especially a tuner isn’t going to help the truck without a rebuilt trans. As soon as you turn that tuner past level 3 you’re asking for trouble. We appreciate your cheaper mod suggestions tho. Not a bad lookin truck.
Nice list. I'm on the market for one of these. I'm jumping ship from Toyota so I'm kind of nervous as a whore in church having been a die hard yota guy for the last two decades but I just can't stomach the poor MPG of the second gen Tundra 5.7L. I've also looked at a lot of Fords but kept coming back to the 5.9 Cummins. So I think I'll soon be a Dodge guy.
I had an 04 ram with air dog pump, I had to run a hell of a lot more #1 diesel in winter. Is there anything you do with yours? Hear some people put a sleeve over filters, some put heat tape, ect.
Try replacing your steering shaft as well. That will tighten up your steering as well. I did it with my second gen and it feels like a brand new truck.

back to cooling. next a water meth kit on the factory engine. every thing is still as Detroit designed it but maximizing power just from cooling down the factories idea of the proper air charge. if a trick turbo is putting hotter air through the can at higher temps are u really netting much except guaranteed increased wear if you do not address the cooling systems shortcomings first?
fuel delivery. mopar hd filter water and cat main filter. but the mopar cannister one will keep your pump alive for at least 250k. the dizzingly expensive lift pumps, are so necessary with go fast parts, but is there power to be had just by maximizinf factory parts?
air box. needed for high sustained rev of the engine. a factory part, but.wrap the tube to prevent heat soak ?
in every case my first money goes to exhaust. i use 5" exclusively with three resonators. near factory sound with a deeper note and vastly improved flow. just sayin....
how much power could a 5.9 make just by maximizing factory parameters without destroying those parameters by using un- engineered go fast parts? i dunno. and ive never heard that discussion take place the rush has always been to alter those parameters with go fast parts, and in so doing, altering the balance of the designed package
How are those spyder headlights/twilights holding up? I’ve seen tons of reviews indicating they fall apart or break.
I would add a Amsoil dual oil bypass system...and locking hubs so you wont be running your front diff all the time save a couple mpg in the process.
Is the T style steering upgrade all just bolt on gear? Like order the parts for a 2015 truck and then bolt them onto your third gen?
Banks intercooler, Fleece Power Flow in tank lift pump, Banks monster ram intake horn, Banks cold air, Fleece Cheeta Turbo 63mm, Steed Speed CNC machined exhaust manifold, MBRP 4 in turbo back exhaust, Original Cummins(Jacobs exhaust brake) Cari 3 in commuter system, Phoenix Friction systems dual disc clutch, EFI live tune..2006 Ram 3500. 167000 miles.
Love the truck man! Great video aswell. I’m curious what mudflats you have on there? One of my trucks is an early 07 and it’s running 22x14’s with 37’s. So really wanting some decent size mudflats like what’s on your truck
Hey they are called husky liners
Do you have a video on your front steering swap from the y style to the new style??
Good info bro! Putting on one of those steering box stabilizers this weekend on my 03 2500 w/4in lift. 🤙
Contact ccs tuning in nisku
A Dodge dealer out east sells the whole kit for everything tie rod drag king it comes with it all and I think it was like 300 bucks.
I want to upgrade my engine cooling system (radiator, thermostat, hoses and all that) on my 07 5.9… what do you suggest, thanks!
On a 5.9 common rail the smarty jr nothing has made my truck run better no matter what I add on I can adjust my truck especially tire size changes
Totally agree got one on my 06 really woke it up.
When it goes you’re likely not going to be home and will need to be towed besides having to pay someone else to work on it
Wow AWESOME!! I’m getting an ‘06 mega cab 2500 5.9 and want to do a lot of these upgrades. Awesome
Me too just not alot of money left over after bills !! I have a 06 too 3500
What can a guy do for better steering on a 2nd gen, what do you recommend
8’ foot bed
TAIL LIGHTS! passager side break light. New to the cummins 5.9. is this a normal dodge thing?>
Nice up grades! Thanks for sharing...👍🏻
And I have 3 filters a big Baldwin with water separator with a drain and that is 5 micron and then it goes into my 2 micron cat filter and the a 5 micron Baldwin in factory spot with water separator and drain and a light to tell you you have water .
Second Gen swap with Snead speed exhaust manifold and a 64 turbo on my 05 Dodge 3500 dullay for towing and hauling !
Definitely not a bad route to go. I’ll be getting an intake horn very soon, probably when I do my injectors and cp3
Excellent video bro!!
Personally I like injectors, I have a 99 7.3 powerstroke and it rips with the injectors and tuner and my buddy's 5.9 Cummins also rips with injectors and a tuner
First thing, get gauges to monitor fuel pressure, exhaust heat, and turbo pressure...
Just stumbled into this video, loved it! and as a result, I've ordered a BD Steering Box Stabilizer :)
I have the same headlights, not that good in my opinion, but they look good :) Waiting for some parts, and I'm splitting them open to install LED projector and switchback DRL like feature.
Nope you can do exhaust, air intake, fass, without tuning. Tuning just gets you more power and it most cases some better fuel mileage.
@@darkirondiesel great, I just didnt want to risk reliability if I got an exhaust without a tune. Thanks man
Very educational although I have most of that on my truck already but thank you just the same
Thanks for the video! Everything you mentioned is stuff I’m working toward. I was torn between the Fass and air dog... have you had any issues with the water filter on the Fass? How often do you change it? These videos help me a lot on mine, cause I’m new to the 5.9 and I have an 03 that I’m slowly building.
Get the air dog. Ive had mine on my second gen for a year. No issues at all.
@@MrSrtman18 Thanks for the recommendation man!
Where can I get an mm3 tuner ? I just want to upgrade the turbo from stock, n also what do u recommend for an upgrade turbo?
If you put steering brace on your truck when new you won’t need to change your gear box and I won’t use redhead any way when dodge makes a massive steering gear box that works better and is brand new not a rebuilt factory gear box .
After installing traction bars do you think you should relocate the right rear shock mount to being the rear axle parallel to the left one?
Who's traction bars are you gonna use? I was thinking about a set too, I spend 1/3 my mileage on lease roads
will it be better to take off the resinator and add pipe
First mod needs to be built trans. No matter how much power you build it for. Putting all these mods especially a tuner isn’t going to help the truck without a rebuilt trans. As soon as you turn that tuner past level 3 you’re asking for trouble. We appreciate your cheaper mod suggestions tho. Not a bad lookin truck.
Ah yes good point. Mine is a 6 speed so I threw a southbend dual disk clutch in it
Beautiful truck Bro!
Nice & Tastefully done!
Thanks buddy
How much psi do you run in your tires? Great video good advice!
On a dullay 70 fry’s and 40 in the rears if not towing and it says this on the driver side door frame
What do you think about the tater built 67/67 turbo?
Got all those upgrades! Good info for sure 🤙
newbie here, which forum do you all recommend to find information? and which online store to find the best bang for the buck prices on cummins items?
Depends what truck you got and what plans you have for it.
Are Baldwin filters good ?
Do something on grid heater and failures.
I have 01 and my employee wouldnt drive it because of death wobble. But just go faster and no wobble
The turbo itself actually a muffler of sorts.
how is your short shift kit working out? still recommend?
Ya at first I had to get used to it, I missed the odd 3rd gear shift, but after a couple drives it felt normal and I definitely would recommend.
Good videos
Hello from your neighbor Alberta
Hey man. What size of lift and wheels are you running?
6” BDS long arm, 20x12-44 wheels with 37x13.5r20 tires
I love my 06 Cummins 5.9 Big Horn
Got the 06 mega cab ready to make her look pretty
Try replacing your steering shaft as well. That will tighten up your steering as well. I did it with my second gen and it feels like a brand new truck.
Do you run this all winter. Looking at picking one up. From alberta
Yup I run this truck all winter
@@darkirondiesel Ended up buying the truck. Watched your winter video, thanks for the tops.
How was the process of installing a vgt turbo? Do you still get turbo lag?
Still lag but not much. Also depends on which tune im running. It’s nice to get 40 pounds of boost though
@@darkirondiesel oh ok cool..what would you suggest for minor upgrades nothing to crazy because I don't wanna start blowing parts and transmission..I got a 07 5.9l mega cab on 35s and that thing is slow..even with boosted launch..it gets a little dangerous pulling in traffic. Also this Is my 1st diesel
What kinda lights are those? They look great I’d like to slap some on my Diesel
Spyder!
any upgraded steering for a 2wd?
