Copart is trash. I was at their Phoenix location a year ago to pick up a salvage title F30 328i, and there was some 18-year-old kid who had flown halfway across the country to pick up a crashed WRX STI, he arrived at the copart location at 8:00 a.m., did all the paperwork and got the title by 10am, and his STI was delivered to him *AT 7:00 p.m.*! Everyone at Copart knew he was waiting for his car, and they did everything within their power to ensure that he had to wait an unreasonable amount of time to receive it. He politely inquired multiple times about when his car would be unloaded. All the staff blew him off and told him to wait and that it would be out soon. Seems like the staff was colluding with the auto transporters and tow truck drivers, and made it so that if you did not pay an auto transporter to pick up your car from Copart for you, then you would be last in line, no matter what time you arrived to pick up your vehicle. They made me wait an unreasonable amount of time as well, but luckily I showed up in the afternoon, so I was inconvenienced a bit less than the WRX STI kid was. We have Copart here in the UK too (assuming it is the same organisation). They are indecently red-hot quick to collect insurance write-offs. My wife drove into the back of another car at 15mph during a coughing fit. They wrote her car off but I negotiated with the engineer on the phone and bought it back, and fixed it for no money. However, four days before he phoned but after I'd received an email from Copart telling me it was being written off, a driver from Copart called me on my cellphone & said he was en route to collect the car and would arrive in 35 minutes! Some of the damage underneath the car could have easily been from a fork lift. Just because the person that loaded it for you was careful, doesn't mean the prior moves were. I have been to many Copart yards and they move vehicles around constantly.
when going to get my stuff there was a window where you could see into the yard, as they forklifted my truck out, they had clearly tore the gas tank open because it was pouring out as they carelessly brought it near the door.
Big mistake when reassembling the connecting rod cap: you must respect the assembly direction imperatively, because these are fracture split, so the contact surface with the connecting rod is unique on each side of the connecting rod cap. Ask me how i know. Hope you're lucky on that one.
@@karleon38 I could tell it was fracture split once he zoomed in closer on the con rod. That being said, it shouldn’t go back the other way because of this right?
It is possible to mount the connecting rod cap upside down, especially when the connecting rod is placed high in the engine block, you can't really see the fracture lines. I destroyed 3 crankshafts like that: a Mercedes, a Renault and a Fiat.
After he said that he didn’t note the direction, my new-found anxiety wouldn’t allow me to enjoy the rest of the video. I can’t believe he was so flippant about the direction. Go rewatch your videos. There was a green mark on the cap.

This car seems to be a solid purchase (all taken into account). Present very classy, and actually well looked after. Well done Waldo. Pity Copart does not want to act their size. They reminds me very much of "We-Buy-cars" here by us.
The 550 is what brought me to this channel and I have enjoyed every video you’ve made since. Thanks for all the hard word going. Into these videos! Cheers from Sweden
You are becoming an expert at fixing these German ladies. Another great repair and outcome. Please continue to keep us entertained - you are so good at it!
I have some constructive ideas as a vehicle engineer. These rods ar fracture split, they absolutely unique and the caps can fit on only one way. The other thing is, you checked the lower bearing half, which is the unloaded side, the upper ones always have more wear or damage. My opinion is that, the guys at the auction thought they could get out more money from the car if they are listing it as run & drive and they didnt care about the potential engine damage.
Cool video! Really looking forward to more. Just one tip, when you first started the car, you could have pulled the fuel pump fuse and just cranked it for 10-20 seconds to build oil pressure. Glad the engine is healthy!!
you hit the jackpot, i bought 2 s class from copart. 1 amg s63, a win, and an s550 still working on it, it was a run and drive, it wasn't. the joys of copart builds.
5:46 😬 Those are fractured rod bearing caps. Don't install them backwards as they are an exact fit to the fracture as they start off as a compete circular rod that's broken in half.
Boy , did you luck out on that car ! When I saw that hole in the oil pan , I thought it was game over. If all goes well, that is going to be one sweet ride.
As several say here this seems to be all from damage by a forklift lifting the car, so it is high chance it was not running at all when the oil pan was broken. And all that oil in the engine also seems to confirm that hypotheses.
Another Waldo video, my hero ! Hope the v12 works out and no major issues. Drive cross country, you're braver than I am. The trees are turning, looks nice in NH. Hoping for more videos soon. Have a great week. Greg from NC.
This has turned out to be my #1 automotive podcast. Exposing Copart for what it is has sealed the deal. I can't even watch the others - we all know who they are. The absolute best of luck to Waldo's World going forward. As an aside I too live the W221 and drive a '99 W140. Old men like me should go out with old cars like mine.
Hi Waldo. I know of 2 cases where cars were driven for many miles with the oil light on because they were told that the oil pressure was fine from the prior owner. In both cases, the engines did finally start making horrendous noises, indicating to the new owners that the oil pressure was not actually fine. Just trying to say that having oil is very important but a few seconds run without isn't always a death sentence. Hope yours turns out to be fine.
It's great to see a new video from you. You love your Mercedes, and I don't blame you. They are lovely cars. I'm sure you will have it running as smoothly as it left the factory in no time
This is one of the most interesting channels that I've subscribed at UA-cam. I love seeing you diagnosing and repairing things, including this Mercedes. My boss here in Malaysia has this S-Class too and he told me the repairs are VERY expensive. Looking forward to seeing more from this channel.
I take it you're done with Copart at this point after getting burnt so many times. As naming and shaming them publically on youtube likely earned you a ban from participating in further auctions anyways.
Love your videos. High quality and very interesting. One of the couple UA-camrs I don’t fast forward any part of the video and finish watching from beginning to the end keep up the good work man.
Great car, just sold my w220 s600 what an experience driving and keeping it running, I got alot of abc experience. Good luck, Replaced it with a tesla model s. It ain't no mercedes, I have spent about $150 to go 5000 miles thanks to my solar panels.
Great content and a wonderful project. I was very surprised that when the rob cap was removed at 4:47 and then upon reinstallation at 5:47 you commented that you weren't sure which way the rod cap goes back on. From the rough parting line that appears to be a fractured cap connecting rod. They're stronger than rods with machined big-ends, because the fractures are supposed to be lined back up. Since the orientation had a 50/50 chance you may have gotten lucky, but I'd think checking the parting-line contact with Prussian Blue would have been a good idea, so that you'd be 100% sure of the cap going back on in the correct orientation. Looking forward to more of your great content.
A family member needed a cheap car, so I bought a Nissan from Copart and drove a long way to pick up. Auction pictures showed all airbags intact. When I got there, the steering wheel airbag had been cut out. After driving all that way, the manager only offered to cancel the auction and refund, which wasn't helpful after finding that car, winning the auction and then driving that far to pick up. I ultimately took the car as is and was able to get a replacement airbag and clock spring at a salvage yard on the way home for $100. They were rude and seriously unhelpful.
As a long haul flatbed trucker who used to haul a lot of auction equipment purchases for buyers, I always enjoyed dealing with Ritchie Bros, any location. They always seem to respect the truckers time. Check in, pick a ramp, they roll, push or drag the equipment on and you are loaded. When I pulled RGN trailers, I often loaded myself but they were always awesome about jumping batteries, they have on site mechanics that will try to get dead equipment running or they will work to get it loaded with the truck driver. I have hauled wrecked cars from insurance lots to LKQ, and they are always good at unloading quickly but it's always on a flatbed.
Looks like the car from AZ. Contractors there rarely tie down their loads for transport on the freeways. I have seen all sorts of flying debris from ladders to refrigerators.
Don't know what you paid for it, but suffice it to say, you definitely scored! Because if you were willing to potentially drop a replacement engine in it, and still come out on top, you hit the jackpot when you didn't have to! Congrats, nice looking car. Thanks for your honest review!!!
My Mercedes workshop once told me: The engine normally does not suffer any damage if it is started briefly without oil. However, the turbocharger should not run without oil; it will then be damaged immediately. The turbocharger rotates at over 80,000 revolutions and kicks in at 1,500 engine revolutions. Because of the high speed, the turbocharger spindle is not ball-bearing-mounted, but rotates in an special oil film that is generated under pressure. Without this oil film, the turbo spindle hits its shaft. If the engine no longer has any power above 3,000 revolutions, the turbo (one or both) is destroyed. This is also why regular oil changes are extremely important for turbo engines. Bad oil damages the turbo first, and the Mercedes specifications for engine oil should also be strictly adhered to.
@@WaldosWorld I have ome V12s in my collection (BMW and Mercedes) for decades. I bought a Maybach 600 last year to make a trip to Italy with my mother and her sister. @@WaldosWorld The oil pump is driven by the engine, so the engine also needs each start some dry rounds until the oil pump has produced oil pressure and transported the oil to the engine top.
Copart are the same in the UK, I bought a damaged horse trailer, I only wanted the chassis, after driving 5 hours to fetch it and you have to pay before even seeing it, they'd lifted it from the tow hitch end with a forklift under the body and had bent the chassis like a banana, they wouldn't refund my money, only credit, it was over 6 months before something I wanted came up!

The facelift W221 is just such a handsome looking machine. It's somehow subtle yet super imposing at the same time. I do think you could do with finding some AMG style wheels though as the S600 generally got some fairly generic and dull designs...
As someone who recently bought my first salvage car from CoPart, it was definitely not a great experience. While I'm lucky that this one was represented fairly accurate, the fees were as much as the vehicle in price. Add the lack of communication from the transport company and you've got a very bad experience. Definitely will be using 'the other guy' next time I do this.
Not sure how common in the S600, but nice to see the Bowers and Wilkins optional audio in there. I never see that in the commoners S550s I’m always looking at.

At a Copart location not too far from where you got your S600, I had a similarly bad experience. Copart had ran my car (personal car got into an accident) out of gas and refused to help me with that (they specifically had stated my car ran and drove so I was surprised to have it not start). On top of that, they lost my license plate. When I called to inquire about where my plate was, they made me wait 40 minutes on hold just to tell me that they didn't have it. Additionally, I found a Nissan Key in my cup holder; I've never owned a Nissan product. Unsurprisingly, they also damaged the underside of my vehicle slightly. Manager never got back to me.

It's a pitty that you had bad experience with COPART. Frankly speaking there should be a special notice on auction DO NOT START NO OIL IN THE ENGINE. Recently I had won a car on the auction, shipping inside the US from Orlando Copart yard to Savannah port took around 2-3 days, no regrets it went smoothly. It should also work the same way for local buyers, smooth and easy pick up from the yard. I fully understand that they could have some delays during "peak season" though in America "client is Kings". What's going on in America? Greetings from Poland.
Hey Waldo thank you for your recent video 👍🏻 Now many years ago I did have a S Class 350 W221 Diesel and it was a fantastic car. Probably the best car I’ve ever owned and was sorry to have sold it. Anyway I do have a E Class Wagon W212 now and purchased it because my Beagle (Paul) loves the ride because of the air suspension and the space he has in the back of it or is it still called a trunk 🤷 Good job naming and shaming, other Tubers in the UK even complain about them! Take care Waldo 🏴
I'll bet a 100 bucks this car was stolen, beat up, and abandoned. No way anyone who owns a vehicle like that takes it off roading. If it wasn't stolen whoever drove it last didn't care about it.
I recently ripped off the front bumper on my w140 by parking in a field over a tree stump I didn't notice because it was dark. Doesn't necessarily need to be offroading.

I saw that as well. There's little grace if it's wrong.
Well, he has a little better than a 50/50 chance on getting it right.
W221 2007 S600 V12TT owner here now for five years. I do the maintenance by the book. Love the car. She is an expensive mistress, always complains, and provides a lot of pleasure.
Your car ain't gonna fuck you bruh
W221, the best car ever in my book. And watching Waldo do maintenance and repairs on the most prestigious of all S-Classes, is truly a treat!
what amazes me is that Waldo says thing like "this rare v12 could be destroyed.." with a straight face, almost smiling :O
Maybe I was thinking about the excitement of rebuilding it 😅
This car seems to be a solid purchase (all taken into account).
I remember back in the day, that we used a Campbell Soup can and a hose clamp to fix exhaust pipes 😅😂
This car is so beautiful.
From the outside and the inside.
I have some constructive ideas as a vehicle engineer. These rods ar fracture split, they absolutely unique and the caps can fit on only one way. The other thing is, you checked the lower bearing half, which is the unloaded side, the upper ones always have more wear or damage. My opinion is that, the guys at the auction thought they could get out more money from the car if they are listing it as run & drive and they didnt care about the potential engine damage.
yeah and he didn't even know which way it went , he could've very easily put it on backwards and smoked that rod bearing.
12:42 That forgotten clamp disappeared into thin air. Nice feature, all clamps should have that to avoid doubling the work.
5:46 😬 Those are fractured rod bearing caps. Don't install them backwards as they are an exact fit to the fracture as they start off as a compete circular rod that's broken in half.
Yes!!!! More Mercedes content!!!! We missed you, Waldo!
Content Idea: Take us through an auction purchase. And another fun video, I look forward to the fluid changes.
Boy , did you luck out on that car ! When I saw that hole in the oil pan , I thought it was game over.
If all goes well, that is going to be one sweet ride.
There's no telling how far the original owner drove it without oil either😂
Looks good so far👍
As several say here this seems to be all from damage by a forklift lifting the car, so it is high chance it was not running at all when the oil pan was broken. And all that oil in the engine also seems to confirm that hypotheses.
New trailer looking nice where’s the gooseneck😂😂
Still a work in progress we're still waiting to see get finished! 😅
You're fearless in all your projects, heck of a welder too.
I'm sure you will have it running as smoothly as it left the factory in no time
Waldo, these videos have given me the confidence to work on my own car more. Thanks for all that you do man!!
Glad to hear that!
Good luck,
Replaced it with a tesla model s.
Didn't you notice the green mark on the cap? 🙂
3:39 you’re not going to use JB Weld to patch that hole?
My uncle has one these... Absolutely amazing house on wheels.... We crossed Europe in it.. was more relaxed then before we loaded up
A family member needed a cheap car, so I bought a Nissan from Copart and drove a long way to pick up.
They often steal airbags
I ran over a shovel at 80mph that way once.
This is a good point! I totally forgot about the turbos
@@WaldosWorld I have ome V12s in my collection (BMW and Mercedes) for decades. I bought a Maybach 600 last year to make a trip to Italy with my mother and her sister. The ladies are in their late 70s and will never make another big trip in their lives. It really was a lovely trip and the ladies weren't stressed, and as a driver I had no complaints either. I was actually planning to sell the car and have had +/-0 offers, but it is in such great shape that I am planning more trips with the car. But be aware a V12 means a lot of horses and they also eat a lot of hey aka fuel.
I love watching your videos. Especially anything mercedes related. Could you please make longer videos and show more of what you do. I hope the next video is more than 17 mins. Thank you for making great content it's a joy seeing you do what you love doing.
I absolutely LOVE the W221 S600 sadly it doesn't love me back. This is NOT a car for those that don't wrench. I have a intake gasket issue and it burns a oil like no tomorrow. Unfortunately, I can't find anyone the Philly area top wrench on it. They'll ask to BUY it but refuse to work on it. Good look with the channel and enjoy the car! I'll be watching!!
NICE JOB...i love those german cars 😍...i hope some day have one... im gona stay tune for the next episode... and nice gamble by the way...
Just want to say, I don't remember how I found your channel, but I'm hooked man. As a car guy as well as being mechanically inclined, I love your content. And that's a nice merc. Good stuff.
Hell yeah, new Waldo upload! Let’s go!
While using liquid Molly was the absolute correct thing to do your contention on 040 as opposed to 540 is opposite of the reality. Many different threads on a number of different forums validate some relatively new oil research for our engines
say that again in plain english?
Just a beautiful car Waldo. Delighted to get your video notification this time.
One small request… Aspen to make an appearance for his fans .
Two things - I love that you rescue so many vehicles. And, for the love of God, PLEASE can you do a workshop project to actually make your workshop somewhere more lovely to work? (Like get a proper floor). You really deserve it, and so do your cars….
Great Waldo as always I do enjoyed your videos because I have learned so much and in some cases it raises my awareness.
OMG so happy to see you drop a video 😄 I think I had heart palpitations 😂 What an awesome car. Soooo looking forward to more videos on this car.
I own '08 S550 W221 with V8. Love this car! I have owned 72 cars since 1974 and this S Class is the best of them all.. I think Mercedes doesn't make anything close to these today.
Greetings from Republic of Moldova, please moooore video with mercedes benz. Just, i love how you repair with big love for, my beloved brand.
This 221 has even a B&O sound system! You hit a jackpot, Waldo!
TBH I sat in the back of the car today listening to the sound system for a little too long. It sounds pretty awesome 😅
@@WaldosWorld You can never listen to it for too long 😁
@@WaldosWorld Hilarious, I was watching this video in my W221 S63 listening through the B&O. Fantastic system, looking forward to more content. Thanks, Waldo.👌💯
I'm a huge fan of Mercedes-Benz and have been since I was a kid. It is marvelous to hear her V12 start and drive. I am ecstatic. Job well done on the car and the video.
Phew! That was a narrow squeak. Peach of a car!!!
Love your content, your delivery is smooth and very informative! Can’t wait to see what the future holds.
I'm surprised they didn't ram the forklift beams through the entire exhaust system ;-)
Beautiful videos, Mr. Waldo. Your follower from Saudi Arabia. Don't delay in the upcoming videos.
Hey Wally don't leave it so long to the next video next time. We miss you buddy!!!
Love when you have S600 on the channel, looking forward to the next chapter.
Beautiful vehicle. Glad it worked out in your favor.
I sure wish I could have luck like Waldo! He finds some truly great vehicles!
Beautiful car, keep up the Mercedes content!
Quality creator right here, thanks Waldo!
Good job Waldo on building up the suspense, you could be movie writer on the side, ok let's continue, I'm thinking they started it for like 5 seconds just to take the pic, in which case should still be ok, Good Luck!.....Javi G.
Great work buddy! It’s great to see you wrenching again! Give me regards to NH! 😊
Hi Waldo, I’m delighted to see you bought the big daddy V12. I’e owned my 2012 S600 for 2.5 years now. It’s not without its issues, but I genuinely believe it to be the best car ever made.
Eagerly awaiting your next update 👍
They intentionally make you wait obnoxious amounts of time if you don't use the tow companies and auto transport services they're buddy buddy with. Its all part of their game don't think its not on purpose or just "poor management". Copart is bottom of the barrel. Any other auction yard/company is better.
Yay! Waldo has uploaded! Please more of these, and I know this might not be your only job, but I do like your videos a lot.
Love your channel and videos! Can't wait for more!!
Absolutely loved and miss my S600, lotsa nostalgia watching your series, and the bug is seriously chomping at my heels! (luckily I picked up a S43 AMG GLE for my wife recently, so we're good for now :) )
Love your show!
Copart is a nightmare!
Bro can you tell us when will the next video will be uploaded. We are dying waiting for months if not weeks for your wonderful video. Big fan... cant wait...
Paused all my activities of the day to watch this one. The male brain craves project mercedes videos.
Manager never got back to me.
never let the insurance company take your car if you want to keep it , the buyback is usually cheaper than buying it at auction
@@Trump_Won_AGAIN I took it to a bodyshop, who I wasn't expecting to total out my car. I wasn't certain if I was going to buy it back or not, so that's why it ended up at Copart. Was my first time
Looking forward to the maintenance video
Hey Waldo it's good to see you again on YT with new contnet. I keep my thingers crossed for you with your S600 a lovely car to drive when maintained properly. I bet you'll take care of her.
Have you ever thought about doing a Cannonball run? You've got the tools for it.
That would be fun! I'm not sure I would want to participate in the driving part of it, but I could certainly help make a custom car for it!
Videos like this really encourage me to not overthink things and just go for it and hope for the best.
I'm afraid your next buy at Copart will be a car with a tank full of all employee's pee in it.
Perfect car, perfect video with excellent quality and interesting talking :)
You can’t name and shame Copart. They do a good job at doing that themselves.
Hey Waldo thank you for your recent video 👍🏻 Now many years ago I did have a S Class 350 W221 Diesel and it was a fantastic car. Probably the best car I’ve ever owned and was sorry to have sold it. Anyway I do have a E Class Wagon W212 now and purchased it because my Beagle (Paul) loves the ride because of the air suspension and the space he has in the back of it or is it still called a trunk 🤷
Good job naming and shaming, other Tubers in the UK even complain about them!
