- Stuck between a 5.9 and a 6.7 third gen and not sure what to get? In this video I break down a detailed comparison of both trucks, and the pros and cons of each.
Third gen Cummins trucks are a favorite for making big power, smashing off road, and towing without the complexity of a new, modern truck. Let’s figure out which one is right for you.

6.7 is a great engine once deleted. Always delete your diesel its good for the environment because it saves the engine
Yeah because you aren't destroying the engine and putting out more nox gas because the epa doesn't like it there like anti gun activists don't have the faintest clue what they're talking about but will write laws against it law makers do one thing and one thing only and that is make laws to stay relevant it matters not if they make sense if it did half the laws we have would not even exist
(Edit sorry if no one could read half way through this comment this new update UA-cam has here has been doing nothing but fucking me everytime I wish to speak in the comments I just went over this right now sorry
That’s actually true. It’s far better to have an engine go 500k miles than replace them every 200k with a lower emission engine.
I agree, egr and dpf for me is an automatic no. Its so annoying
@@codygatti8358 and comber some and expensive you can not tell me they could make parts that could lower nox gases without having to charge you a months paycheck to clean a part of the emissions system it doesn't add up it is just another way for these greedy companies to squeeze as much money out of us as they can
@@jessepitt stop it. You are making sense.
Still going with the non emissions 5.9
valid
Deleted 6.7
Same!
I have one n I love her, she's a 04.5 and she whistles beautifuly
Same, got an 07 5.9. Runs like a monster. Love it.
I got a 6.7 swapped into my 2004 ram 3500. I love the 6.7 a lot more then my 5.9. I think the trick is to swap the 6.7 into the older non emissions trucks
6.7 swap a first gen 😂
@@connershepherd998been done, at least a couple times I know of.
I'm starting to see a lot more of the early third gens swaping to 6.7. The 6.7s are better especially after deletes. Another avenue if you have the mechanic recourses is getting a blown 6.0 f250 super cheap and swaping 5.9/6.7 mated to a 5r110 trans. I'm currently working on a 06 f250 fummins. I will put a video out when I'm done.
5.9 just sounds better
@@MLGtroll365 the vgt turbos sound terrible combined with the 3rd gen manifolds. 2nd gen manifold and non vgt turbo is way better. Then it sounds better than a 5.9.
I was going to buy a new Cummins in the spring of ‘07. I had the choice between the 5.9 and 6.7. I parked them next to each other and popped the hoods on both for comparison. There was so much more junk on the 6.7, I went with the 5.9. Loved that truck! I ended up selling it 8 years later and still kick myself every day for selling it!
You can legally buy a brand new truck and repower it with a rebuilt 5.9 and g56 along with all the emissions controls for that model year engine. That's what I plan on doing.
I ordered my '07 two months before the transformation. My buddy has offered me $30K for it. I paid $31,700 in Oct '06. SLT regcab G-56. 115K on the clock.
@@markm0000and depending on the state the inspection won't matter and you can put any year engine you want
@@5.43v I meant the emissions requirement is tied to the engine year not the truck year. So you can live in California and have a 2024 Ram 3500 with a 1997 5.9L 12v with a 6” straight pipe and stack out the bed. But you have to also replace the transmission and have the work done at any shop anywhere in the country. Isn’t the law great 👍 😊
I bought my 06 new. Still have it. Just got done taking the camper out to the lake.
Everyday I am more and more grateful I got a 5.9. Guy I bought it from told me everytime i drove by that he regretted selling that truck. Even his dad told him he messed up.
I’m still in love with my 5.9 which is an '07 crew cab dually. Pulls large horse trailer beautifully. Plus only has 72k original miles. Paid for & priceless!
I'm still running a 04.5 with 48000 original miles😅
Princesses
Love my non emissions 2003 HO 5.9. Doesn’t even have a catalytic converter 👍🏼
I have an 07 5.9, absolutely love it. I'm a PA state inspection licensed mechanic and I purposely got the 5.9 to stay away from the emissions that do more harm than good in more ways than one. That said, my 5.9 averages 17mpg with a tuner. You wont get anywhere near that fuel economy with Emmisions, which is ironic because the EPAs solution to reduced emissions, is to use more fuel to create more emissions.
Deleted 3500 (SRW) 6.7L 4X4 w/ G56 and 3.42 gears gets 26 mpg @ 65 mph.
My old 2nd gen 24v gets a solid 18mpg with mostly city driving. I don't know how other guys do it with these lifted trucks and emissions engines. They must be spending a fortune in fuel.
@@bemyers123I’m getting 25mpg from my UK model 3.2 diesel Ford Ranger, definitely need a Cummins if the mileage can be even closely comparable
@@Robdutton91 your emissions (EGR, particulate filter @ DEF) are killing your fuel mileage. I’m confident that there’s a better tune that would increase fuel efficiency, torque and lower exhaust gas temps, if you could find someone to program your ECU. The EPA is cracking down on auto & truck shops pretty hard. Global climate change is the new newest and greatest scam (snark).
My 5.9 is the simplest truck I've ever had maintenance and cost. Love it
Awesome video and great points. You know it all! For me, 2nd Gen 5.9 is what I have and I love how there are no emissions. Simple bolt on components and down the road I go in an almost classic truck at this point. Keep em going forever!
The absolute BEST REVIEW I have ever seen. Glad we share the same name! Keep it up Andrew!
You’re putting out some great content, much appreciated! I chose the 5.9 since I don’t want to deal with the emissions.
Love the look of the red 6.7
As someone in the market for a Cummins, I got to say that this video has giving me a lot of information that I was looking for about these two engines, this topic has been holding me back from purchasing one and I glad I stumbled upon this video. Thanks
Get you a 5.9 cummins 2nd gen 24v or 12v
Get a '96 or '97 12 valve and you'll be impressed what can be done with those.
get a 6.7 (if you pulling) tune it and non enmission that bitch and then just change the cover to 5.9 and they will never know LOL
That was by far the best 6.7 vs 5.9 video out there 👍 great job and thank you
5.9 is the way to go.
Your videos are the best out there….very informative!
I have an 08 3500 C&C 9.5' flat bed 4wd 6-speed manual. I looked at this choice back in 16' to me if you're not restricted by emissions it was 6.7L hands down. Having put 22k miles mostly towing all over this country I absolutely love it. The biggest things that sold me were the VGT and the exhaust brake. I knew I was intending it to be basically a towing vehicle so both of those are major helps. I came from a VW TDI that sold be on the VNT/ VGT idea awesome technology. I don’t plan on my 08 going away anytime soon it is just an awesome vehicle.
Solid video! You pretty much hit all the main points. I have a 2007.5 6.7 and my dad has a 2007 5.9 and the 5.9 to me is a lot better due to not having emissions. I will say when it comes to towing, the exhaust brakes on the 6.7 from the factory are really nice, along with the 6 speed transmission. I still will choose my dads 5.9 over mine because of its simplicity
Banks Engineering makes an exhaust brake for the 2007 Cummins.
I bought a 06 g56 6 speed south bend dual disc clutch brand new. Still love it. Been offered crazy money for it but it’s not for sell. Ever👍💪🏻
I own both, have my 06 5.9 g56 4x4 truck and my 08 6.7 mega cab Laramie 3500 4x4. Both serve their purposes and love both of them
Yall really know how to make a truck look good. Love the bronze wheels. These are some of the best looking Rams i've seen on youtube
I searched for months to find my 06 Laramie. I did want something newer with all the bells and whistles but this truck has everything I need and nothing I don’t. The lack of emissions equipment is a huge bonus. I’ve had several 2nd Gen trucks in the past and this is much better in terms of build quality. It’s still an early 2000s Chrysler product but it’s still better. I love this truck and plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off.
Thanks for this video. I've been in market looking for a 3rd Gen. Understand the difference is needed. I think for me as a daily light tow. A 5.9 is a good choice.
Thanks for the little tip about the taillights, I own an 08 and my parts truck is an 06 and I never even noticed that.
Great video and beautiful trucks! I had an 05 5.9 and wish I never sold it.
My dad bought a 6.7 dually with the 6 speed in late 07 or early 08. Before the delete it got 17 ish mpg, and 22 after in town. On the interstate it got closer to 25 on a 2 hour trip. Before 100,000 miles he had to put it in the shop at least 4 times due to the dpf clogging up which killed the turbo. After the delete, he never had an issue. I really wish he hadn’t sold the truck because I learned to drive a manual in it
I have a 07.5 6.7 but used a 5.9 bottom end. The g56 is the best and love mine. Mine is a welding rig that is a 3500 reg cab still a killer truck to me.
Hey brother love the video very very detailed love it, I have a 2006 mega cab and thinking about doing an engine swap and you've helped me more than you know think I'm going with 5.9 it better suits me, what head unit did you purchase I would to a screen that size, thanks God bless God is Love
I’ve got a 06 5.9 with the g56💪 awesome truck and I love it
I’m around farmers, who use the Dodge to tow farm equipment, with that being said they ALL wish they had the 5.9 over the 6.7, they are more dependable, and get better mileage. Emissions is the killer for the diesels, and that’s coming from a technician that works at Dodge, To solidify this theory look no further than newer tractors with emissions, they are always in the shop because of emissions system failures (look at the statistics). As for the Transmission, I own an 05, and the transmission went out at 135000 miles. I took it to Browns Diesel in Riverdale Ca. And they rebuilt it with Goerend transmission parts (billet flexplate, triple disc billet torque converter, billet input, intermediate shaft, billet high pressure Valve Body, and all internal components replaced with Goerend parts). It cost me $7000.00 and Browns guarantees it for life, and it’s good up to a 1000 hp. I have had zero problems with this truck after the transmission was rebuilt. I put a AFE intercooler, and tubes, AFE cold air intake, and replaced the transmission cooler, AC condenser and radiator with all aluminum parts for increased cooling. I live in California in the Sierra Nevada foothills and it’s hot here. I have owned my truck for 14 years, and I pull my tractor and other farm equipment plus my 30 ft toyhauler, and I can pull any grade including the 58 through Tehachapi, and Pacheco Pass with no issues. That 5.9 is a beast, and I wouldn’t choose a different truck. STAY AWAY FROM THE NEWER DIESELS, THE EMISSION SYSTEMS ARE THE DOWNFALL FOR THESE TRUCKS AND ANYTHING ELSE WITH A DIESEL ENGINE. DO THE RESEARCH!
I love my deleted 6.7 (bought that way...wouldn't have purchased if not deleted) but the sound of a 5.9 is just never going to be beat.
How unbelievably clean and beautiful that 6.7 truck is! That blood red is just burning my soul!!!
Crazy, I just seen CJC post about the 6.7 the other day, very clean build
It’s a wild truck!
I have a 07 with the 5.9 and a Automatic. I looked for awhile trying to find a manual with no luck. The previous owner had the transmission rebuilt to handle 500 hp. I saved for four years to buy my truck in 2015 outright.
I went with an '04.5 HO NV5600 and put a ported HE351CW turbo for the power and exhaust brake. Don't have to worry about emissions or transmission and make good power.
I bought an 07' 5.9 drw with a G56. At the time I just bought it for work but who knew I stumbled onto such a gem! I did a CJC starter system with a few add-ons and now I want to figure out the steering....
Nice truck! if you need guidance on the steering, I have a whole video from when I did mine.
I live in CA and have been looking at getting a 2006. Banks has enough legal aftermarket parts to give a reasonable boost. ATS performance has the best transmission upgrades available. If you want an allison swap on a 6.7, ATS Sells the allson with horse power ratings up to 1100 horse power. They also manufacture a bell housing that matches up with the Cummins so you do not need adapter plates and can use the stock starter. They have an electronics package which allows all the accessories to work also.
Me too on my 5.9 and a 05 runs like a champ !!
I love my single cab long bed 6.7 g56 4x4. But some stuff fell off. But it makes so much more bottom end grunt.
Mines an 06. Im sure they've changed things but I'll stick with my 5.9 . It never let me down yet .
This was a super helpful video man! Thank you! May I ask what the specs are for the wheel/tire combo on the red truck??
It looks so good, and is the look I want on the ram I’m buying!
Living in South Carolina, a deleted 6.7 is looking pretty sweet
You should compare brake systems and how to upgrade them. Especially if you are towing, you could include adding/upgrading a trailer brake system too.
Having owned every generation of cummins, I already know the ins and outs. However I love the content. Keep it up
I've owned a 2003 3500 Quad cab, long bed 4x4 Cummins 5.9 and this is the perfect truck, I've had people come by my house and want to buy it, Banks intake, Banks exhaust and Banks six gun tuner, 139K miles I ordered it new and will keep it forever
93 12 valve and 01 24 valve. Love em both to death. That being said I wouldn’t mind playing with a CR 5.9
I have and 2005 5.9 I bought in March of 2010 with 151,000 miles and a plow for $19,600. At that point I knew a guy with a 12 valve Cummins with 380k on it . I sit here now a little over 13 yrs later with 334k on mine. The body and paint aren’t great. But most maintenance is joints, oil, brakes steering, water pump etc. It runs consistently and goes. I’m debating finding a new one to buy. More for outside appearance and less interior wear. Thing is, they want more for the same truck today than I paid 13 yrs ago.(seeing mid 20’s online) 🤔still wrapping my mind around that
I feel you on that, I work at a dealer and we have a 06 quad quab long bed with manual trans 153000 miles. They want 19k plus tax and fees . It's in pretty good condition. What you think on the price
What camera do you shoot these rollers? I love the style of this videos man! You gained a new subscriber
I use a sony a7siii
I have an 06 g56 truck. Starting to get some blow by, I will use a 6.7 bottom end when it goes.
I have a 2003 5.9 5sp manual - love it. bone stock and i can get almost 23mpg highway @ 65mph. it does need some love like a new valve cover gasket though.
Nice, I have the same truck but with a 6 speed instead
Some other important differences to note about the 03-04 third gen 5.9 Cummins vs the 04.5-07 third gen 5.9 Cummins. The 03-04 has two injection events, a different spray angle on the injector nozzles, different pistons, and the non-California 03-04 had no catalytic converter, just a muffler. All changes after the 03-04 Cummins engines had to do with stricter federal emissions laws and compliance with them. The 04.5-07 5.9s have three injection events, the third of which has to do with emissions reductions, as well as different piston bowls and spray angles on the injectors for emissions control. The 6.7 Cummins engines were designed completely around the need for stricter emissions standards, including having five injection events. The best combination for power would be early third gen electronics/injectors paired with the larger displacement of a 6.7.
I really like the look and sound of the 5.9 cummins 3rd gen. truck. If my 7.3l Excursion should give up the ghost, I have my eye on the 2006 mega cab 3rd gen. Ram with 5.9 cummins. No doubt.
I have a 2002 5.9 with a 6 speed. Last year of the 2nd gen. It is amazing. Wouldn't give it up for any newer truck
I don't miss anything on my 99.5. My '07 5.9 brakes better, steers better, gets better fuel economy(admittedly minor) and much quieter.
02 5.9 is great
I love the tire and wheel set up on the red one that looks dope what are you running on it
Great video!
You should do this with a 2nd gen: 12v vs 24v
That’s the plan!
2004.5 5.9 SLT. 48RE rebuilt and beefed up at 175k miles. Other than that, most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned.
Great video! I'm dumping my deleted and built 6.4 powerstroke and going down to pick up an unusually clean 04 5.9 3500 manual. With tax and license, it's right at 30k. Seems high but.... Better than going to a gasser.
As a California guy...I'm happy with my 07 5.9 !
I loved my 08 6.7 quad cab and my 06 5.9 mega cab, but my 6.7 was a complete animal.
I love em both can't go wrong with either however the 6.7 needs to be deleted to be reliable. Especially in cold climates. I currently have a 4th gen tuned and deleted with a few mods. Tows like a freight train and gets great fuel economy. Can't go wrong with any Cummins.
I have a stock 07 ram 3500 and the stock emissions and haven’t had a problem with 250k and the trans has been good
I'm suprised these trucks (great looking) are even allowed in California?
New sub here.. great content for a new dodge ram 04 w/5.9 own here...
Great video! Wish you would of covered comparing the G56 and the NV5600. I’ve got the NV5600 and love it. Can tow my 35’ fifth wheel with it!
I feel like that’s a video all on it’s own honestly!
I pull a 40’ Alliance 5’er with my SRW ‘09 quad cab , 3.42 gears 4x4 w/ G56 and I love the truck. I have gone through the truck and upgraded to a Fass, Fleece coolant bypass and filter delete, rear airbags, etc. It’s been super reliable and it gets 26mpg on the highway. Towing varies too much due to terrain and wind. It’s the best truck (vehicle) I’ve ever owned. 230K and it keeps going! I don’t regret passing on the 2006.
I’ve had both. 2006 common rail 5.9 and a 2014 6.7 Cummins. My 5.9 seemed more reliable. Hardly any issues compared to my 6.7
It's all about choosing the best fit for your specific requirements!
Just finished a complete rebuild of my 03 5.9 truck. Being in the rust belt, swapped to an 08 frame. Cleaned primed and undercoated the complete frame. New 4” down pipe. New Stage 1 turbo still on factory tune. Upped the hp to 370 and about 525 torque. Went from stock tire to 35” with a 3” suspension lift. Ride is a little rougher for now with only 400 miles on it. But expecting it to settle in within the year. Had a 2014 6.7 and was not overly impressed with the performance with the emissions. Just picked up a used bed from the south. Will be addressing the interior and the remaining body work in the near future.
Love the content!
[thank, you for you're video.👍 I, just bought a 5.9 with low mileage at. 164 400]
that interior needs some Dorman chrome door handles got a set back in 2018 still look great, one bolt to replace them and no need to take door panel off, I also got set aluminum door lock knobs
easy way spice up interior.
Great video. Thank you.
I bought a 2006 5.9 a few months ago and I wish I would have bought it sooner as I needed the pulling power. Fortunately, I enjoy the my 2006 5.9 much more than my 2008 Ram because of the fuel economy and the lack of emissions.
my grandfather has one of the last 5.9 2007 2500 and it sitting and 490k mines
my dad used to have a very early 6.7 and he had many turbo problems and this got rid of it for a 4th gen that he still has
Have owned both, but im digging my deleted 6.7🎉
Love my '05 5.9 Manual.Reliability is what I want most.!
I have a 89 w350 01 2500 and a 08 6.7 great trucks. One of the best engines ever created in my opinion.
I might be crazy but I have a huge itch to sell my 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie to get into an 06-07 5.9. I've always wanted one and the desire has never gone away!
Had one it’s sick. Do it turbo sound in cab is great
Those both truck are beautiful.
I have a 2004.5 5.9 automatic since new and had a 2007 6.7 automatic since new and the 5.9 gets about 22mpg the 6.7 16mpg.
The 2004 has zero stock emissions but is much louder and is simple to work on now that it has 280k and I still have it.
Hey man love ur videos, I looked in ur merch store and I didnt see a rear window sticker of ur logo, just saying ur JD logo would look so badass as a big white window sticker like the Cummins one everyone uses. I would totally buy one of those if you put it in ur store. Itd be a good way for us Just Diesels enjoyers to spot each other in the wild.
I need to make them! Thank you for the reminder
@@JustDiesels Let me know, not joking I will be the first to buy it love ur chanel would gladly drive around my 2004 5.9 6 speed with ur sticker on it
Got a 06, upgraded the torque converter and installed a upgraded valve body, got a VGT turbo kit so I got the 6.7 improvement for breathing. But I have to wonder what are the bugs that will need fixing. I’m only at 200,000 and shop time has been reasonable. But when it breaks on the road do to cheaper design parts. Like the injector line, ball joints, trans control unit, torque converter… etc. The drivers seat gears.
What are the normal issues high mileage trucks run into? How about a show on that?
Have an 06 cclb laramie 6 speed manual and love it . Had it since 09 ,i guess since ive never driven a 6.7 for a long period of time i dont understand why people think they are better . Ive had nasty smarty tuner on it the whole time ive owned it and like the power but think its time for a custom tune for the old girl , way too much "how dare you" coming out my 5 inch sewer pipe .
Great information 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
6.7 into earlier trucks is the move, the EPA is seriously cracking down on shops who offer the deletion as a service, I've heard of several instances in the last few years, most notably the diesel brothers getting fined 850k lol, that starts making the swap seem like a lot less effort.
One random interesting fact. A buddy of mine worked in auto auctions a while back and told me something interesting. If you live in a state with out inspections and you delete a trucks DEF system, then get in an accident where the truck is declared total loss by insurance and take the check like you normally would. When the rebuilder purchases the truck at auction and finds out the deletes have been done. They actually have recourse against you because they will never be able to get that truck to pass the inspection that changes the title from salvage to rebuilt. It's similar to odometer discrepancy cases where you essentially sold something to someone which you knew it was worth significantly less. The only way to truly protect yourself if you own a deleted truck and it gets totaled is to buy it back from insurance and sell it to a scrap yard yourself. But you're going to take a financial hit there because the scrap price is going to be less than the offer you have to make to insurance. Just something I thought you all might find interesting.
Rim/wheel specs of red truck? You have videos on your truck with the Carli 3" lift. Red truck clearly has Carli 6" lift but would love to know the tire wheel combo? It's a cool video showing the exact same truck in a Carli 3" vs 6". I prefer the lower 3" but I do love the wider stance of the 6" lol.
Bro caught some of the best shots of a 3rd gen I’ve seen.
I gotta ask…. On your 06’. What size lift and tires are you running. I have a leveled 05 and the tires look tiny… your stance and tire combo looks fantastic.
I have a 24v 5.9. Its such a good truck.
Please do a detailed build breakdown video on the red gen 3.
It’s coming! Going to do a 1 year update video
06' Crewcab 3500 4x4 5 speed flatbed work truck AND
11' Megacag 2500 4x4 auto full delete play truck
Absolutely love them both, they both have cts2 and cts3 respectively, programmers on them and run like scalled dogs.
In stock form, there is no better setup than a 6.7 with an Aisin trans or a G56 for towing. Even with emissions. Emission equipped trucks are usually fine if you keep it hot towing.
I do love 5.9 common rails though.
I've owned both ,bought them new , loved my 5.9 , but a 6.7 HO aisin is a power house especially with the exhaust brake.
Thank you for not having them ego hauler "moose mode" for the video!
I’m craving a 4th gen but love my 05 6 spd
The g56 in 07 and up have a taller 6th gear, also there's a conversion to put a 6sp Allison to the Cummins 5.9 and 6.7 now.
Great video, you forgot to mention a couple of key points about the 6.7. The stock turbos Vains sticking open causing a Catostrophic failure on the turbo. Also a positive of the 68RFE is it has a custom tuneable computer like the Allison and modern Ford transmissions.
If you use the turbo breaking feature religiously, you shouldn’t have any problems. I’ve put 230K on mine. Original turbo and injectors. Deleted, Fass, Fleece bypass and stock filter delete w/ mild tune.
😂
Great video, and great information! Did the 2007.5 6.7L Ram come emissions-free? Because THAT would be a unicorn.
No any 6.7 truck will have emissions. 2007 is 5.9 and 2007.5 is 6.7.
I have been fighting my 3rd gen front end for a while now...I have changed everything! Synergy ball joints, one piece draglink ( with heim joints on every corner, even track bar) redhead steering box, borgeson steering shaft. It still wonders all over the road. Kinda scary to drive, it has a 4" lift with 37x12.50x18 Method nv315 on it. If you have any input on how to stop the wondering please help! Thanks man love the channel!
It’s the RedHead. They are complete garbage these days. I’m in the same boat with my 05
I really miss my 2005 with the 5.9. And that also had the G56 transmission which was a pleasure to drive. In my opinion the biggest weakness with these is fuel filtration system. Thats basically what destroyed my injectors. Go with a 2 micron filtration system and also beef up your ball joints.
Have 2005 5.9 love it will never sale it , being pulling a Bumper pull R.V for years no problem just keep up the Maintenance
@@greglopez7345 23,000 psi with a speck of dirt = destroyed injectors. Make sure you upgrade your filtration system. If i would have known ahead of time I would’ve installed a CAT dual filtration system.
Did upgrade my to Bank inner cooling n Air flow also I use wheat wicks fuel filters
I meant to say wix fuel filter
@@greglopez7345 those are 7 micron fuel filters.
The common rail fuel system should have a 2 micron
