The unaffected and unassuming honesty of Natalie Merchant almost requires genuine conversation. Even the often over-the-top histrionics of Kathie Lee are mostly subdued here (Gifford does love music). Hearing this beautiful song, with just piano and viola is such a rare treat on such a show. The choice of song here is also fitting, with its title, "How you've grown" really describing Natalie herself. She would soon be leaving 10,000 Maniacs to become a solo artist; just herself and her art...
@@keithrg1 Me too. As she comes out, you can see her with an almost 'Do I have to do this interview' look then she becomes her more public persona but not really comfortable until she sits at the piano.
I think she was just a little uncomfortable at being tracked down - I think she handled it pretty gratefully... yet made her point. I’ve spent time with a number of pretty famous people in LA, and they’re usually really relaxed and chill, but getting tracked down at home through friends and family can make someone feel really vulnerable, even if it’s well intentioned, especially for their families - as it would anyone. but yeah, you’re right. Whatever her reasons, she just wants to get out of there...
Mike Woodson I know, and I’m wondering why she’s not excited. Why wouldn’t she want millions of viewers to be aware of their record and hear it? They wouldn’t make records if they didn’t want it to get exposure to the public, and a show like this is the one of the most efficient ways to promote it
Evan Hughes no one really knows but Natalie. I feel like they just aren’t her kinda people. Natalie seems like a very real caring person and maybe she feels like they are not the same. 🤷♂️
absolutely, although as their fame increased she was much better but I also think it depended on the show. With Rosie O'donnell, she was way more relaxed and funny. I think the difference is that most of these talk appearances are for press and publicity reasons but Rosie was a true fan and thus she was probably more at ease in an otherwise stressful situation with people who don't even know you. Kathie Lee even said, I listened to this album "this morning".
Well, this interview is an absolute snooze fest! Could it be any more BORING? Regis and Kathie Lee tried to be engaging, but Natalie wasn’t even trying to put on a happy face! Even Tracy Chapman smiles more!
She can’t help it, she was a shy person. Not everyone knows how to be bubbly and extroverted. And I wouldn’t call it a snooze fest. She told some interesting details about the beginnings of the band.
Natalie was PISSED -- that's my takeaway. And who could blame her? Regis' story is basically about his daughter stalking Natalie until she got Natalie's aunt on the phone. Because of that call, they had to delist her number. "Life of a rock star," was all Regis had to say. Really? He should know better. Natalie, the pro, sucked it up to endure their ridiculous banter and vapid questions in this squirmy interview. Then she sat behind the piano and played like an angel. Respect.
Didn’t seem pissed to me. Just shy. Actually the questions in the rest of the interview seemed just fine and they were very complimenting to her and seemed impressed with her telling of the band’s origins. What was the problem?

Mary Ramsey on viola. What a treat!
Who took over the group after Natalie Merchant left 10,000 maniacs
A huge album my first year of college 💗
Just one amazing voice and mind. Timeless!
Amen, Ron.
A look of pained discomfort until she lost herself at the piano. Elegance personified with a voice as magical as a sunrise.
I thought the exact same thing

She might have been constipated
Great to hear a live version of this beautiful song. Thanks.
The world needs more of natalie. Stop the hate
I agree wholeheartedly.
I agree!
Love this woman
intelligent and unique , a talented woman for sure.
La voz de Natal y Merchant es espectacular. De las mejores.
Her face when she's walking out looks like, "Let's get this shit over with!"
Yup. Looks like the kind of pretentious stuff she hates.

@@Vejur9000 how is it pretentious? All they’re doing is asking her about her background and about the bands history.
Natalie was not impressed with having to talk with that bogus KLG - the anti-Christ.
She is so magnificent ❤️
She is so uncomfortable
Amen, Brothers Rich and Russell.
Little great wonderful woman
Three sweethearts. Rip Regis
My favorite 10000 maniacs song!
wow great
When ever an Angel sits down to sing and plays the piano, It’s Natalies voice that we hear
"The 10,000 maniac group" - LOL!
Superb song, short but nice interview! Thanks!
It's almost Christmas time. (Set decor)
When u cut a record, you agree to promote it. This... Not sure this would be Natalie’s choice of where to play, who to talk with or be interviewed by.
And why is that? Seems ideal for promoting something , since it’s a show seen by millions
Have you watched the interview? I’ve seen other interviews where she’s excited to be there and seems to like the person or people interviewing her.

I wonder what she has against Regis and Kathie Lee? They are actually quite nice to her in this interview. Why would she be so standoffish with them?

Regis is kinda awesome
Right!! How great is it that he actually appreciated and took a genuine interest in learning about Natalie and her group’s origin.
A young Aunt Bee.
Those two knuckleheads are like Vultures.
She's just awkward and anxious.
I'm more sad that she shortened the song? No solo by Mary.
Wow even Great artist have their awkward moments....still enjoyed the performance
Thank god no singing from Mary
You can tell she hated doing this
She must have social anxiety

Amen, Bob. N hates bogus.
@@marksheehan8442 Katie Lee is the anti-Christ while NM is an angel.
Regis was annoying as hell and Kathy Lee’s a big phony.
Natalie has a look on her face as if to say .I'm tired of doing this shit.
Little did she know she’d be doing a whole lot more of it over the next 10 years

Natalie cracked a smile and laughed several times during the interview.
Whoever thought the violinist would take over then the 10,000 Maniacs would stink the rest of their lives
I do not believe she is that bad. She is just not NM. Big shoes to fill there.
@@sartainja no she's bad bro
