Maddox table does the same. Gun shy is the softest and best anti war song Ive ever heard. I could go on and on.

The album "In My Tribe" just blew my mind about 35 years ago. The song themes and lyrics were so different than the norm. A friend of mine told me about 10,000 Maniacs because she knew them personally in college, and it was "love at first listen". Her songs have been social commentary that have pointed out truths over the years.

When Natalie sang, “See them walking, if you devil, if you call that walking. Stumble, stagger, pull and drag themselves along the streets, of heaven…” I was working in NYC on Park Avenue near 40th Street. Everyday I walked to my job from Grand Central Station where the streets were packed with shiny black limousines dropping off wealthy business people while so many homeless people were dragging themselves along Park Avenue, searching garbage cans or picking up discarded take out food. Her song was being played that year and I almost was sure she was on those blocks. I love the compassion in that song.

I was surprised when she mentioned she got passionate about songwriting only after joining 10.000 Maniacs. Due to her high level of artistry in songwriting, I thought she was writing her own songs since she was a child.
Artists like her, Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple - that write alone their own songs in full and are masters in lyrics and music composition, creating their own unique music styles - are really rare nowadays.
And it’s very sweet to see her mentioning her happiness when she saw people singing her songs for the first time, and other artists recording her songs.

Been a fan of Natalie since 10,000 Maniacs. An incredible songwriter with a voice so distinct with a vocal timbre second to none. Her lyricism is humble and true and in combination with her vocal delivery it's in a class of its own. All of Natalies songs are so well produced. One song on Tigerlily has always stood out to me, (and I'm not certain what I've read is accurate) whether the song inspiration originated from her elderly neighbors losing a lifelong spouse or her grandfather but when an artist can strip it down to write and create a vocal performance of a song like, Beloved Wife, well that speaks for itself:) Hearing that voice crack in the lyrics around 2 min 57 sec into the track gets me every time:) So glad to see Natalie on GMA a couple months ago with work colleague Abena Davis out there creating new stuff:)

The universes always provides at the exact right time. I had not listened to Natalie in decades and was cleaning out a house with a friend and there was Ophelia about a year ago. As she speaks of Love in this interview it is one of the most powerful gifts I receive from her music is to sing thru wide array of emotions her music brings to the surface for me. It is said we have to feel to heal and I have taken many tearful drives of gratitude for the greatest power on this planet LOVE. Kind and Generous brings me back 20 years at the start of the most insane spiritual ride that until a few years ago I never even knew I was on. Thank you universe for Natalie and the amazing gift of singing with her to clear the emotions that if not accepted and felt thru lead to dis ease in the human body.

I remember when she released the song Wonder and came on the David Letterman Show and he announced her as his new bride. I completely understood why he said that. She was a true gem!

I have 11 or 12 recordings of 10,000 Maniacs and Natalie Merchant respectively, on Letterman. I am not sure how many appearances she made in total, but she was one of his favorites. She was smart, talented and naturally beautiful. Letterman's type.

I recorded several demos in the SUNY Fredonia recording studio for early Tonemeister student David 'db' Brown (later of NYC Record Plant), a couple years prior to the Maniacs there. I like to say that because it's true. I still have those tapes. This was the first year the program was operational, I believe. The band played out locally. Great place and great time: Southwestern NY State.

The way she danced, her natural beauty, and mostly her original AMAZING voice - I can never understand why she's not in a top category for female artist. I had a serious crush on her, my then girlfriend now wife was actually jealous.

Just look at her eyes, you wouldn't want to mess with her. I saw the Maniacs at the Lyceum in London and there was a heckler in the audience, she soon sorted him out.

Such a unique style she has. Perhaps in the minimalistic vein of someone like Morrisey, but not at all derivative. I usually prefer more experimental music with an emphasis on harmonic exploration, but there is something very special about her contextual sense of melody.

So grateful to have been caressed by over two and a half hours of your velvety lyrical touch, last week, in Portland. Looks like you've got great Australian dates set up. Yay!! Live your best life! I haven't gotten you out of my head since FINALLY seeing you in person the other night. I guess I checked off a bucket list item there. 💌

I'll never forget the milk and honey of her first independent release and the pleasure, joy and calmness it brought me in high school. Tiger Lily remains close to my heart. Sister Tilly is wonderful, the whole album feels wonderful and positively provocative. My sweet 8lb Maltese is named Tilly Lily. I know that sister Tilly is written with Joan Didion in mind and dedication. I think of Margot Adler and her autobiography Heretic's Heart, as well, when I watch the video.
