She is a magical human, very smart, funny and great dancer. Every time I need a "pick me up" I feel like I need to see her live. I think the last time I saw her was in NYC 2016 before my 26th birthday! It's been a long time. It was one of the best concerts. This song always gives me goosebumps, but of course "Kind and Generous" is a classic and is one I always dedicate to my oldest sister.

Yes! I've watched all your nightwish reactions and now you've stumbled upon another favourite! Natalie like Floor has a very unique voice. Very warm on the hand, but she can also let it loose when she wants to. So many gema to find. The song Wonder is probably her best solo song from her first solo album Tigerlily. Try the live renditions of her solo and with 10000 maniacs on the David Letterman show, they're always fun to watch

I have known Natalie Merchant's music for close to 40 years, since 10,000 Maniacs was touring on the college circuit here in the States. So, I am very familiar with this song. But I had never heard her explain the backstory of it. I was really moved to see how distressed she still was at the memory. Her music has always been emotional, and she never shies away from writing about real life, whether good, bad or wondrous. She is one of ours.

      Nat can twist the truth.
      Don't believe me
      ask her brother .
      Little boy is true.
      No black aura.
      It was 16 Morgan Street
      No dog.
      No porch couch
      the boy had a name
      Tommy..
      No spoon digging.
Sure she spent a majority of her time in Jamestown
      But....
There is a family secret that's
      been kept since 1971.
      It took someone
      6 months to live this
and 6 years to write it.
      That someone was asked
      hey can I have the
      Tommy story?
You can have the writing credit.
I don't want the writing credit cause it's only a matter of time before you roll out on
      your fellas and
I'm not chasing them around my whole life for 18¢ every time the band plays it
      said this person.
What's the name of the album
We're gonna call it still life
      STILL LIFE
that's what you were gonna call the band after the trainwreck of
      BURN VICTIMS..
      I'll make you a deal
      Said this person.
      You can have the story
      But I name the album
      Deal said Nat
      in my tribe
      Said this person
I'm gonna change the title to
      What's the matter here
      since it's repeated many times
      Whatever you want Nat
      It's your story now
      said this person.
      And that my friend
      is the story of
      Storytellers.
      And as it turned out
that person's prophecy came true 6 years later
      When Nat said ciao to
      10,000 maniacs

Did she actually take any action, or is this song from guilt of not helping fhis boy.

Natalie Merchant is such a beautiful singer/songwriter and she has a huge catalogue. I've not listened to her a lot lately but you all discovering her means I'm pulling her back into some of my playlists. Some of my favorites are "Wonder": ua-cam.com/video/6zpYFAzhAZY/v-deo.html, "Kind & Generous": ua-cam.com/video/LR6PV-Irv7s/v-deo.html and "Life is Sweet": ua-cam.com/video/V_MpNDMDbaA/v-deo.html This is maybe my favorite because it just hits; I know for reactions it may not be as "exciting" but I think the studio version lets you get the most from the song since it's one of those where video distracts you from connection to the song: "For they told you life is hard, misery from the start
    It's dull, it's slow, it's painful
But I tell you life is sweet, in spite of the misery
There's so much more, be grateful"
I look forward to both of you discovering more of her music, it's like a balm to your heart.

Sad lyrics, happy melodies - fine example here in this song by Natalie. ABBA of course were the masters of this technique of juxtaposing a happy sounding song with lyrical content which is far from happy - I guess people would tire of sad lyrics/sad melodies all the time so it's a way to sneak past our defences and gets us humming songs that we wouldn't normally touch with a ten foot pole because they are too depressing - smart songwriting.

The band: "We have some really happy, jingly jangly music for a song."
Natalie: "I know just the right lyrics to sing over it! It's about a little boy horrifically abused!"

I wouldn't say it's optimistic. I think it's more nostalgic and regretful. I feel like it's supposed to comforting to the person who witnessed everything.

This verse below in particular is the one that got me. And it exactly sums it up too!
    'All these cold and rude
    Things that you do
    I suppose you do
    Because he belongs to you
    And instead of love
    And the feel of warmth
    You've given him these cuts
And sores that don't heal with time or his age'
I've seen Natalie play live and the beauty and rawness to her voice is what brings her songs to life. Thank you for listening to this.

I felt if her emotion with this song also from her guilt of not actually helping the boy 's situation...merely observing...

Agreed. I feel like it's supposed to be comforting to the observer knowing they didn't step in based on everyone saying "it's their kid do as they see fit"

She's a good storyteller, while the story is a bit sad, the musicality makes the weight of sadness, lighter and lesson to be learned is what is more important.

Unfortunately my father grew up in such an environment. Sadly he went from being an Angry Abused Kid to being an Angry Abusive Man. His Mum was a Sociopath and his Dad had unresolved Abandonment Issues which made him angry. Grandpa's Mum died when He was 3 months old and his sister was 3 years old. His Dad remarried, but she was a terrible Stepmother who wanted nothing to do the kids. She even convinced their Dad to send them out of the state to live with His Brother's Family 👪. Poor Grandpa what he really needed was some therapy, but that wasn't the done thing at the time. It had a lot of stigma attached to it, Men were expected to suck it up and not even mention their feelings. Unfortunately things got worse for Him when he agreed to that terrible arranged marriage. Grandma was definitely manipulative, using Grandpa's anger like a gun which she aimed. The kids suffered for it. Mum and I left My Father when I was 13. I found a wonderful Father Figure in Mum's Sister's Husband. He was one of the Sweetest, Kindest Gentleman you'd ever meet.
