- A slightly longer video than normal here. Sorry! I wanted to show you how much amazing guitar lives in the G chord shape alone. A few other topics covered that have come up the past few days. Thanks a bunch!

Guthrie, you are a kind friend. Thanks for the words we we spoke the other night. I want to say, my private lessons and AW subscription with you since 2019 are continuously paying off and I have fretboard “lightbulb” moments all the time. Your teachings over the years have me understanding everything you talk about. Too much to note but thank you! I encourage anyone serious about melodic, never lost fretboard knowledge to get onboard with GTs lessons opportunities. Thanks man, see you soon around town.
Guthrie, they may come in quick flashes at a time… But when I break down and analyze what you pass over, your teaching is PACKED to the brim with information and you waste zero time going from one idea to another. I could pick a random place in your videos, watch for 30 seconds, and practice for 30 minutes. I can also turn every video I’ve watched so far into a 2 week/month long masterclass!
No one has done more for my playing than GT. He's so right about CAGED and chord shapes. His private lessons are a wealth of material to go over and over. He's an incredibly talented musician who is also a great teacher. In 50 years of playing and countless other lessons he is simply the best I've found. He took my playing up several levels and I continue to learn from him every time I pick up the guitar. Here's the thing you might not realize; he says it without really saying it: It's about the journey. Enjoy the journey and watch yourself grow on the instrument, truly what it's all about.
Thanks a million, Jay. Always a pleasure working with you and so glad it’s working!
awesome. can't wait to get started.... even as a 53 year old.
No doubt,,, The journey of guitar ,,seeing yourself get so much better over time,,,it's All about DEDICATION to the instrument. Play guitar, - RJ.
These last three videos that you've done are opening up a whole new world for me on guitar. I now can't wait to get home from work to practice these shapes & get them "under the fingers" for a couple of hours each night . I believe that in a few months I will play more melodically and finally escape "pentatonic hell" :)
Coming to ya from Dothan, AL. I don't get to Nashville much but I sure have treasured that in-person lesson from a few years back. Thanks for all you do and the inspiration. Life long fan and keeping up with you on the internet machine. Hope to see you soon. My best, Lamar Miller
CAGED. Dumb name but has changed my way of playing. Thanks for spreading the word. I’d love to see y’all this weekend at the Jazz. But 11pm is a little too late for these bones.
Dude this right here is the outline for a whole course. each one of the segments that begins with "here watch this" is an entire study worthy of a video. Most of the other you tubers cover some of the same subjects more than once. You have got a course outline here on HOW TO SEE IT
Thanks man! I have a full online course at Artist Works. Check it out!
Just watching you noodle is a thing of beauty.
GT your glass is overflowing for all of us that enjoy your musical gift. Never stop, never give up, never give in. Your musical voice is beautiful and important to share. Thank you sir. Blessings to you🙏
Thanks Guthrie - you’re really giving out here
Thanks man!
Thanks for your generosity GT! You are an amazing player.. and an even better human (from what I see on your FB page).
Guthrie, even your mistakes, as you put it, are music to my ear. Thanks for the lessons, the direction, and the inspiration.
Thanks man!
Plus, there's no extra charge, as he occasionally jokes.
These latest lessons have been awesome you are going into greater detail which is really good for us slow learners really appreciated
Thanks man!
UA-cam is recommending all your older videos. I love it. 4:20
The bit you did at the end was very cool. Can you show us that a bit slower. I loved that. Thanks Guthrie, you're making a difference in my life. God bless
Wow! These last few videos just make me want to practice non stop! Huge opening up of the fretboard. Thank you so much for the generosity in teaching.
I don’t get to play as often as I’d like with two little kids in my care, but these videos give me a chance learn even during times that I can’t hold a guitar. My son loves listening to you play as well!
Awesome! Thanks man!
I was at a plateau for years... Stuck in the pentatonic box... You've opened my eyes, my ears and I'm excited to practice again after playing for over 50 years! Thank you!!
Thank you for all the great lessons and advice man. Love your brand of music. I appreciate the way ya break these down for us and how you kinda look at music in general. Ya got a ton of support. I hope to see ya at the UCO jazz lab or somewhere at a festival in Oklahoma man. Since I’ve discovered your music and guitar playin and these vids. Say all the time. You’ve changed the way I play and look at music altogether. And not to try and have a pissing contest with sad stories but recently I’ve lost my vision and had to retire from my career of 20 years and I’ve found myself in the guitar and playing and finding new old music if that makes sense. But you’ve broke this down so I can understand a lot better what I’m doing and how to do what I wanna do and enjoy this more “me time” that I have. So thank you, keep on keepin on.
Thanks a bunch man. Means a lot. And so sorry about your vision. That will actually make you a better musician!
Hey man no charge for mistakes ....you should probably make that into a t-shirt just saying
Man, your playing is so good and inspiring. I don't really understand all the theory stuff yet. I'll get there someday. Thanks for the chops brother 🙏
Guthrie..I really appreciate and thx you for all your lessons ..I luv your playing thx u ! Leigh ( Sydney Australia ) ..You should come over and play at the Byron Bay blues festival ( I could make some introductions for you 😎🙏🏼
Beautiful sounding chords! You're one of the most natural players I've ever seen, amazing.
Thanks man!!
Loving these videos. Please keep them coming 😃
Only 500 comments? I don't write often because there are others w/comments. I could carry on w/many more thank you's and observations. But if it will keep you on this channel, ill be more generous w/my comments. I watch 100% of your vids.
Can you please do a vid on barn burning country guitar and what steel bends you like? Thanks Guthrie
Love the lesson and the storytelling! The idea of focusing on one shape in each video is great. I'd also love to see videos on muting techniques and rhythm guitar. Thank you Guthrie! Keep it up man.
Thanks man!
I feel SO dumb! LOST right off the bat! .Not familiar with the chord you're basing it all on. It's a C chord, but a G shape? WOW, I can't get traction. Wish there was a tab that said which frets and which strings. I know theory & the neck pretty well, but I'm lost. Gotta be me! Everybody else is loving & gettin' it. I'll try to feel around for it or come back & try again. Thanks for trying, Guthrie!
Sweet inspiration for us out here! Thank you so much again for a great, insightful and practical expose of the other side of the major scale fingering! Gold nuggets indeed...thanks also for leaving in the flubs and little mistakes - really helpful to see the mental process. Like they used to say in Math - "show your workings!" Really grateful for your spirit in sharing some aspects of your vast experience. Thank you thank you, Mark
Thank you 🙏🏻🤘🏻
Keep posting more guitar secrets so that we can understand the fretboard better. You did tall abit on your other video on how to use major minor Dominant 7 and Diminished 7 chord and looking it through the major or minor Pentatonic? Something like that. I hope you can do more
It's you and Uncle Larry that inspired me to really get back into playing the guitar again but in a totally different way than I'm used to. Been playing since 13 years old,now at 50 years old I'm seeing all this as more unique and exciting...kinda crazy lol
Guthrie, keep your magnesium and zinc levels up. That ‘stiffening’ can easily become arthritis. Something I know all too much about. Also, if you eat red meat, then stop. Fish, chicken, and even pork (pork, not too often), are all fine, but I, and so many musicians that I know, can attest to the difference. Great channel btw, a cavalcade of enormously valuable techniques, licks, and tricks. You are a master guitar player nonpareil.
Great lesson as usual
You and Uncle Larry have helped me improve exponentially.
Is there a Uncle Larry channel?
@@stratocumulusnimbostratus328 Yep: Homeskoolin. GT and Larry are buds.
1) What you played in the intro was just gorgeous 2) Great fretboard info as always 3) Love the stories from the Gulf coast, especially the hair in the tuning peg, lol! (I don’t mean to laugh at anyone’s misfortune, but I can picture the whole scenario, and in hindsight, it’s hilarious 🤣). 4) Appreciate the advice on stretching/loosening techniques. I’m an athlete as well as musician; I foam roll and stretch my body regularly, but hadn’t thought to apply the same to my hands. Makes perfect sense. Thanks as always and keep up the great work and music 🙏👍🏼💛
Awesome 🤙
Very cool. Thanks dude! ✌️
Thanks!
When you are doing the bottom part of that... Getting that pinkie and position is tough...
one of your greatest videos @Guthrie Trapp appreciate all you do, and have since cows on the buffalo!
Holy s-! Like drinking from a fire hose. Great stuff Guthrie-you are 🔥.
Thanks man!
Hey sir you sound great ,love your videos i' d like to learn a song by tab benoit if your interested, let me know
Hey Guthrie and anyone that might need this, very often conditions like what you are describing are caused predominantly by your back/posture combined with a lack of certain essential vitamins (D is critical, hypertherapeutic levels must be taken with K2 at a ratio of D1000 iu to K2 10mcg but all the right ones are important). I don't know what your diet is but you can always do with more red meat, cut back on carbs (especially the starchy stuff) and a high quality bone broth regularly is also a big help (nothing is a substitute for red meat...nothing). Joshua Tucker has a program for treating tendinitis and carpal tunnel and I am living testament it works...it's cheap and I have no affiliation with him. Good luck everyone, be healthy.
WOW that was some awesome playing there GT!!! I’m just really starting to learn guitar. I can play scales and also do some chicken picken that i learned from other videos, but I don’t even know what im doing. I just came across your channel and i love your style man, I’m hooked on this channel . The only way this cold this could be any more golden is if you could match your voice with the guitar lol. Thanks for the videos partner.
Thanks a bunch, man!
Man these lessons are absolute gems! in 2021 I stumbled on a "5 minute lesson" by Jake Curran on using triads in lead playing which sent me down the path of learning all my major, minor and diminished triads on all string sets all over the neck. This somehow led me to Tom Bukovac's videos where he reinforced the importance of this knowledge and ultimately your "this is THE secret" video. I am now confident that this is the correct path and I can ignore all the guitar lesson noise and shortcuts online. I understand there are no shortcuts, you have to put in the work. Now I no longer pick up the guitar and noodle the same dumb pentatonic stuff, I'm trying to use my ear and make music. I don't quite have the "heads up display" of the fretboard in my mind that Tim Pierce talks about, but I know I'm on the right track and my playing is improving. Your teaching style is awesome, thank you so much for this incredible content!!!!!
I'm on the triad path right now. I've heard so many teachers say to learn the triads, but I put it off because it seemed so daunting. In reality, it isn't hard to learn those triads at all, 5 minutes a day over a couple months and you own those triads forever.
Thanks for the explanation of the G shape at the C position. Very helpful. I’m taking guitar lessons, but I learn from everything I hear and see. Also love your intro playing.
You're starting to sound like you've been hangin' with Uncle (Tom Bukovac) Larry a bit!!
Hi G,
Thanks for these videos. I stopped playing for 15 years due to having a family and just got back into it this year. This time round i have youtube as learning materials and inspiration.
Watched sooo many guitar videos and review but ended up keep coming back to my favorite 2. You are one of them.
Sometimes you look unsure in the video. Not about your skills but something else. But its cool for me. That tells me you are real.
You skills and melodic are out if this world. I have always only like Paul Gilbert melodic flow but I love yours too now. I even “clean” my sound because of you.
Dont listen to the haters, dude. You and your channel are gold.
Let me know if you have merch. I’d loved to support because ur private lesson is a bit too dear for me.
Love from down under
“Don’t overthink it. It’s all right there. Just keep playing the guitar.” 🙏
I really like when you make a mistake, you correct it instead of editing it out..
It sort of makes it easier to understand and to strive for. I really like your approach to music.
I call visualising chords shapes further up the neck the “invisible capo”, just picture a capo on the 7th for example and then you know the G is now a C and work around that. Never had a lesson in my life so it’s just the way I worked it out for myself over the years
Thankyou for sharing your gold... spreading guitar wealth.
Love the channel, been watching for a while, maybe missed it but what's with the ground wire sticking out from under the bridge plate. Thanks for what you do.
2 guitarists I could listen to without stopping....My country's own, the great Tommy Emmanuel and Nashville's own Guthrie Trapp.
Great lesson!
I have got the same problem with my left pointer finger for several years. For example, without a warm up, I can't finger a C major chord. Thanks God it hasn't got worse yet.
Can anyone who’s taken his artistworks course tell me if it is exclusively country? I love GTs lessons and teaching style but I don’t play country music. Would it be beneficial for blues/rock as well? Thanks!
It’s not. These concepts and fundamentals are the foundation of ALL styles of music. They apply to everything. Thanks a bunch!
Great lesson! So melodic! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and talent with us! Like just about everyone else, I started with the pentatonic, but when I asked those extra 2 notes for the diatonic, it open up the guitar for me in so many ways. Then on to the minor, the Dom 7th, and on and on.... But it started with adding just those 2 extra notes, and learning that all over the fretboard. Thanks again- your an awesome teacher!
Thanks a bunch man! Means a lot.
Really appreciate all the effort you put into these videos and the knowledge that you share G, thanks! As an older player who still gigs, I like to see a pro talking about stretching before a gig and how to take care of your hands after years of playing. If you can, more information on this would be very helpful. No one sees a musician/guitar player as an athlete but if you stop and think about the physical mechanics involved, in playing this instrument, you are.
Thanks man!
Thanks a lot for taking the time to share this material, it is some of the best on you tube ! keep it going Guthrie we appreciate your talent !
This is worth gold. Thanks.
Absolutely beautiful ,Guthrie❣️thank you for sharing!
Hey Guthrie I'm heading to Nashville in October from Downunder. I'm with you on Artists Works. Would be great to catch up mate.
Is that the bridge ground wire just coming out of from the bridge and down through to the controls? Lol
As an older guy, I can’t say I have been “Girl Fishin” lately! I guess if you snag one by the hair with your guitar you get to keep her till you cut her loose, lol. I like to include the “A” shape C triad on the G, B, and E strings with that “G” shape. I had a light bulb moment playing triads. It became very clear that on either side of the 1, 3, and 5, lives the rest of the scale tones, which means you also have all the diatonic chords as well. Like you said, it’s all there. I am still figuring out what to do with it, but I get it. Thanks for posting all these lessons.
Dude!! That's some tasty playing. I gotta admit I used to not be a fan of country but some of you players are unreal. Very knowledgeable. And thanks for sharing
Wow, I have the EXACT same issue with my fingers. Same finger and everything. Thanks for addressing it! I'll have to try that supplement out!
PS - you make the best "trapp music" I've ever heard lol. If you don't know what trap music is, consider yourself lucky. 😂🤣
Love it Guthrie! ArtistWorks subscriber here. Having a great time. Thank you!
I've been to the Florabama many times. It's a big place! Sometimes they'll have 3 bands playing at once. If music in one area doesn't suit your taste you can walk over and hear a different band. I never saw you there Guthrie...I'm positive I would remember that! Thanks so much for each video. Cheers
Glad you are enjoying bringing us these videos. You're a good guy, Guthrie. You restore OUR faith in humanity.
Tale care, friend.
Thanks a bunch man!
Flora Bama! I spent 2018 to 2020 down in Mobile. Loved the music and musicians down there, but we had to get back to California. I found I could move my body out there, but my heart wouldn't budge from CA. As a music photographer, I got to know a lot of musicians from Mobile to NOLA. I miss those cats. There was a lot of great talent there. Sorry our paths didn't cross during that time, but hopefully you'll get out here before too long.
Fantastic
Super cool approach to talk about one chord form at a time. Mainly I enjoy listening to you talk. Thanks.
Great stuff Guth,
I've been recently discovering the G shape up the neck with the majors, minors Dom 7s, triads, and arpeggios out of these shapes. Also creating my own hand / forearm stretching routines ( I'm 53🙈). This lesson was super relevant to me and I kike your mistakes, keep them up, it makes it real and believable. So many perfect guitarists / lessons that never make a mistake leaves you feeling "yeah right , whatever, great lesson, now I'm going to throw my self in the river" Once I've drilled this lesson I'll be moving on to your C shape gold. Good onya Guth - Adam, West Australia.
PS next time you see Andy Wood can you please ask him to make a mistake, thanks.
Do you use the EXL110W (wound G) on any of your guitars? 4k looks good. Still on your I-phone? The diference shows up in the grain of the wood on the wall behind you.
Thanks for the video! In my experience, high quality Magnesium works for trigger finger and spraying on forearms helps too (I'm not a doctor). Keep up the great work!
Guthrie, Love the lessons! I've been playing since 1965 (white fender mustang 1st guitar) I started having that same issue with my left hand same finger in my 40's, then it went away. I'm 71 now and it came back within the last 6 mts. It does not hurt and like you I just slowly open and close my hand gently (in the morning) and it goes away, does not hamper playing or hurt in any way. BUT what I try to do is keep that finger with the other four in a soft fist (slightly closed when sleeping) and it is not stiff in any way in the morning. Sounds weird but that what works for me.b Thx... BD
Oh! Guthrie is in Spotify.
I'll be back in youtube later.
Thanks, Guthrie for great inspiration and keeping it real. Just a down to earth explanation along with sharing stories of your journeys with friends like Kenny Vaughn etc. Awesome, Love this stuff man! Still waiting for that magic lol
Love all your lessons Guthrie. More road stories please! That guy telling you about his cousins and giving you that sort of non-compliment killed me.
Thanks man!
That V minor against the I Major works great, also I use the minor shape (Aeolian) against the Dominant 7 in a similar way; in this instance the minor shape uses the 6th so I try to get funky chromatic to bring in the 7th as well. I believe that this is a substitution that Pat Martino uses and I think it came from Guitar Player - the piece of paper I have is, I believe, photocopied from a GP edition - seriously back in time! I saw Pat playing the Pizza Express in Wardour Street (London) for my birthday present from my wife; I have never seen a more committed picking style, and of course he was sensational! I will be sharing your channel with my buddies.
Been watching you for a year and my playing has improved significantly. I've been playing since 1986- and in from LA( Lower Alabama)- wish I had UA-cam way back then or at least a guitar magazine mentioning the cage system. Oh well- if you get out to Wyoming hit me up
A.R.T and Graston technique for arm👍
My favourite drink is a G&T. Coincidence? Also, I love that you wear Brixton caps. My Brixton flat cap is my fave. Another coincidence???
Now THAT was a video packed with info. Should keep me busy for a while! Thanks, GT.
NEW suscriber right here, I am from Peru, I thank God I found your channel, I have seen 3 maybe 4 videos in your channel and I can tell you the improvements I justbachieved, I learned how to play by ear and all those theorical stuff you talk about I discovered without knowing the actual terminology, I considero myself a very good guitar player, with a very fine musical ear but when it comes to improvisation sometimes I hesitate, And you inspire me to become a better guitar solo player, thanks man.
Great video as always Guthrie. I have been having the same finger issues you described - stiffness and the inability to close fingers in the morning. You mentioned K. Greenberg turned you onto a supplement to help with it. Could you add a comment or link with that information? Would really appreciate it.
He shows a picture of it at the end. It's called Terry Naturally Curamed
I’m having that very same finger problem....
I am 61 and have been playing since I was a kid. I just went down from playing 10’s to
9 1/2’s and that has seemed to help a little.
I am going to try this supplement... I hope it helps!
Thanks for the cool breakdowns dude, I'll be messin with this G shape gold later this evening.
Hey, Guthrie, thanks again for another great video. I'm 59 and have been playing since I was just a kid. The past three years I've had lots of problems in my hands. Massage has helped a lot and I have to spend time stretching the fingers every day. I wonder if any of your subscribers have advice on the topic.
Something I realized was getting the guitar up off my leg help considerably. I play with a strap sitting now or between my knees (the correct way) to keep the weigh off my leg as I damaged a very large nerve that can knock your hip, pelvis and SI out, and that sucks!
Guthrie great stuff again. I can see what your driving at mapping out the chords and scales associated with each chord type but your going a bit fast for me! Maybe some exercises tabbed out of say C-F-G using major G shapes, Minor shapes, 7th shapes and so on would be great? Im 58 starting to understand things on the guitar but time to practice is hard to come by so I watch and make notes in my lunchtime try to get the fingers into it at night. Always great to watch you - your inspirational Guthrie for all of us to keep practising just for the pleasure of music and the challenge. Thanks.
I don't want that trigger finger either, Awesome info on G. I always liked that open G tuning, those Kief Richards licks. You did put quite a bit of Guthrie gold in this lesson. It's on repeat.
Bro, your channel just disappeared from my feed for several months and it just came back recently. Glad to see you (the channel) back. 🤣
"bunch a cousins aint much better than y'all" - man I nearly choked laughing at that
Great lesson. Loved the Flora-Bama stories. I got to play there once during the songwriter’s festival, but getting in on a regular basis is tough unless you’re part of the gang. My offer for coffee if you down to Fairhope is still open. I might even pay for a refill. 😁
Amazing Guthrie - thanks for your insights and generosity
As always, such DAMN GOOD stuff from you Guthrie. I watch a fair bit of guitar related stuff and yours is by far the most captivating. And mind you I'm pretty skilled at the CAGED system, and I "know" the things you're teaching, but the musicality you squeeze out of it is tremendously inspired. Although we share the same ingredients, I only manage to make lemonade while you make a 6 course meal plus a meal to go :D stunning stuff!
Thanks a bunch man!
good blend of musicality and technical guff without being too shop talky
do your lessons on Artist website cover all the caged fundamentals oyu talked about in the last few videos or just focus on country playing??
“Lots of mistakes in this video”. LOL! Your mistakes sound better than what I try to play on purpose 😆
Met you at guitar gathering in Nashville
Your video Sunday was great I’ve been practicing and trying to understand,
You are great instructor
Man, more gold. Love the practical examples of the theoretical stuff (CAGED) we’ve all be thinking about. Had chores today but it’s off to the guitar for a bit. Thx!
Guthrie-thanks for all your knowledge. Love this lesson as it helped me see and understand how to start using only a few strings to convey a chord as referenced around the 5:00 mark. That G shape was always a stretch for me, so thanks for breaking this open.
Cheers to you!
I'm viewing from East Nowhere... or Maraylya, Australia. Just letting you know my bucket list includes buying a whisky & blues bar and heading to East Nashville for lessons from you, my man. Just letting you know to get prep'd for a visit in the next few years! In the meantime, when are you heading down here for some shows?
Yea man! Come on. Thanks a bunch!
