The “CAGED System” Explained

  • I’m doing my best to explain what is now called the “CAGED system”. To me it’s not a system at all. It’s the ultimate concrete foundation of the guitar from the very beginning. Period.
Everything that’s ever been played is connected to this foundation. It’s not new and it’s not changing and it’s not going away. The faster you get into this the faster you’ll improve on every level.
Have fun with it and don’t forget to use your ears!

The appeal to me of your videos is that they are unscripted, unedited and authentic. I'm a guitar player and guitar related info is why I'm here. Unless you learn to survive setting your hair on fire every week you will probably continue to attract musicians and not casual viewers. I'm glad you know your lane and you stay in it. Of all the UA-cam music teachers I've watched (dozens over the years) you have been my biggest influence. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

THANK YOU, GT! Your explanation, and the fact you share all of this wonderful information with us is SO appreciated!! To all who struggle with this, just keep at it, your playing WILL go next level if you put just a little bit of time into this kind of study. Seriously, just 15 minutes of playing with purpose per day will have you understanding this stuff all over the fret board. The thing that helped me the most is learn all the shapes in one key first. (I started with C) Do that and nothing else until you can play that comfortably up and down the neck in all the shapes. Then add the fifth of that key and play those two keys in all of the shapes and nothing else. In just a couple of weeks you won't believe how much knowledge of the guitar you'll have. Outstanding stuff I wish I knew 30 years ago!! God bless you, GT and everyone embarking on this amazing journey!! 🤠👍

The jam they did on Brret Papa's channel turned me on to these cats and everything else J have seen from Tom and Guthrie continues to blow me away while teaching me something more about something that I thought I knrw if teaching something new altogether. I have been playing for 40 years and thought I was pretty decent until I watch these guys who not only have chops but the best chordal and melodic vocabularies this side of the Steely Dan sessions players.

I first learned about the CAGED system in a 1974 Guitar Player magazine monthly column by Howard Roberts. Howard said that his friend Jack Marshall invented the CAGED system. Perhaps Marshall just arranged the 5 open string chords to spell CAGED. Seems, like Guthrie says, that the concept was probably around long before that.
