I just saved this video on my things to practice every day compilation!! I don't know how I stumbled onto Guthrie but I'm glad I did!!! He also mentioned Bruce Foreman(jazz Guy) whom I also like his playing so that's a plus!!! thank you for making these videos Guthrie!
This guy really gets to the essentials of mastering the fretboard, everything he said right here is to the point and valuable, feel lucky to have his videos as a resource, it will make me a better player
I feel the same. It seems to come effortlessly to him. I study this stuff too and I am nowhere near as good as he is. Do you like CAGED? Do you know all the notes on the fretboard? Learning both, and some licks is my current endeavor.
Brilliant as always. If some guy says you talk too much, then take no heed, thats BS. Your explations are excellent and in plain speak, which makes what you say logical and completely fit. After 40yrs of playing, Im hanging off your every word-I wish I had known then what Im learning from you now. I thought I was a decent player but I was missing so very much. Sorted now though. Thanks so much for what youre doing.
crazy because when I first saw you on Broadway playing with Don K I asked you if you were mainly playing out of the chord, and here you are teaching chord tones, but you keep your lines connected and employ alot of guitar techniques
This lesson is worth in gold. If you want to take your guitar playing to next level. Watch this video, and everything Guthrie shows here. If you dont understand something rewind and watch again until you do. Dont go to the next lesson or video. This concepts will take a while to sink in under fingers. Important part is that you understand the idea and then work on it until you dont have to think about it on the guitar. Guthrie thank you, you are a great player and teacher!
Very good stuff here folks. It don't get no better than this. Get the information, if you take your time and watch/listen and learn what he's offering here it could last you a lifetime. Keep in mind this is how he makes his living, so show some gratitude and give back. No I do not know him personally, but what I do know is that what he's teaching is worth something. And by the way Guthrie, you do not talk to much. 😆 just the opposite in my opinion, the more you talk the more we understand. This is the real deal teaching here. If you want to know your instrument better learn what he's showing you in this video. Thanks Guthrie
I'm gonna have to watch this another hundred times or so, there is just so much in there to apply. You say that you don't talk much about theory, but your perspective is theory interpreted(I think I just made that one up, sounds true so I'm sticking with it!). Hearing/seeing how you connect caged positions, broken chords, triads and scales lights up a road for me to follow. Thanks GT this was great lesson 👍
GT has changed the way I play- it's not just the theory of playing and how different strands of knowledge relate to one another but he doesn't overlook the mechanics of playing either. I haven't come across anyone else on UA-cam with that combination. I have been playing for nearly 40 years and I learn something new each video.
I sure am glad that UA-cam keeps the content posted. I just went over this again. And your breakdown of the maj 7 minor 7 minor 3rd is so helpful. I know all of the arpeggios all over the neck so with this info now I can work on the root position, 1st inversion and 2nd inversion. Understanding where they are with ease. Guthrie you say you're not a music professor but you sure know how to breakdown and understand the whole layout of the guitar.
I have watched this lesson thirty times since August 2019 and I pick something up every-time. Every word is gold Guthrie. You haven't spoken too much. Keep em coming man !
This one video has got some major light bulbs of understanding going on for me. Thanks Guthrie. Anytime I see a notification that you've posted a new video I stop what I'm doing and watch.
Didn't sleep very well last night so I'm not counting on learning a whole lot, but I saw GT with a 335 and I had to click it. I doubt anything is going to stick to my brain this go around, but you are always a pleasure to watch and listen to, Mr Trapp. I hope you are doing well!
I can highly commend the patience a /pro /player/ has to stop his engine on the tracks just to wave to his peers! I`ve been eatin this content up! Greatly appreciated!
That triad change for the dominant 7th and major 7th, from major. Is priceless for me today. I’ve hit a wall with the guitar, wanted to be a blues man. So like every one else learnt all the pentatonic scales and shapes. And wasn’t ever playing the changes. I could hear the notes in the pentatonic, but never played the change. So have recently resolved myself to learn the triads. Have only been doing major and minors trying to sing them and play them and trying to call out the thirds and fifths. To get my ears more able to hear the inversions. All feels clunky, but understand as you mention in the vid. You have to put the work in. But that one little trick a turned a light on. On;y just found you and Tom, from the Brad pappa footage of that gig you did for in stereo. I’m 52 and the only music I’ve ever heard that moved me before was from the 70s. You two are the only two musicians I can think of that put me in that space. Who are current and best of all open and transparent about their craft. And share like you do. Been a rough three years been a black dog on my tail. But you two made see. The guitar is a place you can put that negativity and learn to smile again. Thank you both.
This is one of the best in explaining the triad when playing the chord and arpeggio. Once must have some basic understanding of the triad and inversion to fully digest this. This helps a lot to visualize the notes and chord.
Thanks GT, you are breaking it down in plain simple terms. If you are new to this, or if you've been playing for a good period of time, this is important to have under your fingers. Another important factor as this is worked on is the amount of ear training that comes with it. Thanks again GT.
I love your approach. Narrating as you illustrate the examples is clearly you thinking out loud. It gives the viewer a chance to really get inside how you get the best out of your performance each step of the way.
Guthrie you are a great guy, an amazing teacher and player. Ive been playing a long time and nobody breaks it down in such an easy and understandable way as you. Thanks to you my mission is to become fluent in all major minor and dominant inversions all over the neck then find all the musical lines within those shapes!! Thanks my friend you are Aces!!
I've got to say bud, this is one of the better approaches in my opinion for actually practicing and learning the fretboard. I think this is probably the most effecient way I've found yet to learn your intervals as well and to tie the caged barre chords to the everything, pentatonics, diatonics even the arpegios should come way quicker seeing things this way. Thank you so much for sharing with our community. Thats for real a cool thing to do. thanks again. Mike S.
Thank you for giving me a new access to playing the guitar. After a break of 25 years I started to play the guitar two years ago and with the help of youtube tutorials it is now muck easier to make progress, especially because of your great tutorials, my guitar playing improved significantly. I am a huge fan of you, your person and your guitar playing. Unfortunarely my familiy (wife and 5 kids, 2 dogs, 4 cats... and 7 chicken) has to suffer, because they find me more and more spending hours in my music room, practice my guitar playing. If I ever come to Nashville I would like to see a concert of yours. Maybe you are going an a tour in Europe. If so, then please stop in Vienna, Austria, I will be there. Thank you that you exist on this planet an enriched my life. Greetings from Austria Robert
Going back to basics while sheltering in place. This has helped greatly. Everyone needs to know this stuff no matter your level of playing. Thanks Guthrie!
Thanks again Guthrie. This is a very complete and valuable 30mins. How to finally start to understand the fretboard? It's all here, in one amazing lesson. I wish I had this when I was 13 years old. This information was Impossible to find then, I didn't even know how to properly ask for what I was looking for, but I knew the sound I wanted to achieve. This is Gold Guthrie. Thanks for everything you've given to us on here. I now can put on a jam track and ideas I have actually make it to my fingers and on to the fretboard. That's something I couldn't figure out for almost 20 years, and now in 6 months, with your direction, it's possible.
I'm from England and take it from me, you do not talk too much. At all. I love how enthusiastic you are and your use of language, keep it up dude, really enjoying your videos.
I made it 20 years with no lessons teaching myself out of guitar world tabs. Needless to say all I really knew how to do was a couple positions of minor pentatonic and that’s really it. Was interested in jazz after seeing a guy perform solo in a bar and started taking lessons from him. We started with the major scale and worked our way up from there. Learning these basics will change your playing immediately! I wish I would have learned this stuff when I started out. I’d be so much better than I am now. Great lesson Guthrie!
Guthrie's Artist Works Online Curriculum is a amazing learning platform. Just started the beginner section on lesson 12 and it has been a amazing eye opener
What Guthrie’s saying really works. Focusing on the chord shapes, triad inversions and intervals has totally changed my ability to play melodically and navigate the fretboard. I was surprised how quickly I improved when I started studying this method after seeing Guthrie talk about it in his first Brett Papa interview appearance. Joey Landreth also references learning the neck in triad inversions and intervals in his interviews. It’s the missing piece if you’re stuck in the pentatonic boxes like I was. Thank you Guthrie for changing my musical life and sharing your knowledge. You’re an amazing player and a good human being.
You are the best man. So down to earth and humble. I got serious about guitar about four yrs ago diving into scales and such. I recently finally devoted myself to triads and my guitar life has changed completely. I don’t read music or anything, but it’s so true to say how triads open everything up and essentially result in a closer intimacy with the notes on the neck and all the connections to chords and scales. Progressions and leads just wash over you. Triads triads triads!
We're with you man, keep it coming. You are changing player's lives by explaining all this stuff the way you understand it. One thing that kind of hit me the other day is that your basic E, A and D shapes are structurally the same with 5, 1, 3 from top to bottom. That's pretty useful to keep in mind because you always move the lower string for major to minor change. The middle string always controls Maj7 or Dominant. Pretty cool when you sit there and think about it.
Thank You Sir...I have only recently cracked open my mind around the everything-ness of triads, or more importantly, recognizing the sounds of these triads and the relationship of those sounds to each other....I actually don't have the words to express how fundamentally life changing this is but I thank musicians and teachers like you and Tomo F. for showing me the light....
Man, that was a great lesson. When you played those tasteful lead guitar lines, I could hear EVERY chord change underneath! Your method of teaching is so easy to understand. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and God bless!
People that say you talk too much are idiots. Either they know the material or not. If they already know it, they should move to your next lesson. If they need to learn it, they should sure as hell listen to your wisdom and amazing teaching approach. Keep doing it man!
No, Guthrie, you're not talking too much. Everything you're saying clearly illustrates what you're doing on the guitar and helps players understand how and why it works. Great lesson. Thanks.
I am on month 3 of the ArtistWorks material and this all fits together. Wish this was around when I was younger. My wife calls it my self indulgent routine. LOL. Having fun.
We're here because we like your playing. You're doing a great job presenting the material Just the right amount of talking and playing. This triad stuff is great and what I like about your playing. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Unreal guitar playing, all your lesson are brilliant and well informed. Thank you for sharing your skills with us mere mortals, much appreciated Guthrie
You are the guitar man, Guthrie! We can see and hear your great playing today, but we didn't see the thousands of hours you put in learning this stuff. A gold nugget from this lesson is "there are no shortcuts."
6 hours later...i have finish to learn the 40 sec of your improvisation. Thanks so much to help me understanding my favorite instrument. Your generosity is awesome. Best regards from france.
Guthrie shows you that once you know the rules, you can break the rules… Probably the best instructional video I’ve seen in 50 years of guitar playing … If I ever meet you Guthrie, I will bring a bottle of VSOP Cognac …. Music is the true religion…
Guthrie Trapp I found you about a month ago and have learnt some of the best playing knowledge from your vids. Fantastic stuff. I also dig in this era of digital modeling amps and 500 tones, you plug into a Fender with no pedals and have tone to die for. Major props man! I dig your style.
I love this. I've known for a while that if you can build a basic major triad you can reach all of those other voicing the same way around the neck. But it's been a challenging actually wrapping my head around it and putting it into practice. This explanation is great...lots of stuff finally clicking!
This popped up on my screen and I have to say it is the best explanation of triads and how to use the caged system to understand how the guitar works that I have ever seen. Thanks! Now I have some work to do.
Thank you for showing the things you have learned and the work you have done, I can only speak for myself, but I know I can say everyone who loves music, appreciates you so much for giving us a chance to learn from a true artist.
This is a wealth of information! I play professionally and wish somebody had spelled this stuff out so clearly for me a a ong time ago. I’d encourage any serious aspiring player to live and breathe this lesson, and review these basic building blocks often. Thank you so much, you’re a great player AND educator !
Guthrie Trapp look me up via my website if you find yourself in LA. I’d def would like a one on one lesson. In the meantime would you do a video on incorporating what you practice into the gig ? I’m guilty of working on something in practice that goes out the window when I Jam or on the gig.
Excellent explanation of the building blocks needed to navigate around, and learn the notes on the neck needed for improvising and breaking out of the pentatonic box. This explains the CAGED system in depth. Thanks!
I just learned what much of what I do on guitar means and it’s given me access to the entire neck. Man I’ve heard your name thrown around for years and I’ve truly been missing out, thank you!!
Always a great lesson Guthrie. Some times as a teacher you do need to hammer home some points, and learning all these chord inversions and incorporating them into leads is one of those times.
I saw you quite a few years ago playing with Jerry Douglas on Vancouver island. You have no idea how much of a blessing that was for me. This was probably twenty years ago or so. I have some photos of yall if you ever want some. I gave Jerry a big photo with him and Sonny Landreth or Bill Frissel or Lindlay. God bless yall
As always thanks Guthrie... funny how often I hear teachers explaining that the chords up the neck have everything to do with lead playing because I'm no pro but I do understand that you have to be able to see those notes. I'm working on it every day.
Hi Trapp,Ur words r straight to the point wrapped with sincerity and love. it is an honour to learn from u as u laid me into the real groove of guitar playing.
Fantastic lesson. Gives intermediate players so much to think about to incorporating their practice routine. Love the idea of breaking it down three strings at a time. Will be working on this for sure
I’m following your Artistworks course as well and I feel like this is finally clicking for me. You’re the first person who has explained it in a way I fully understand. Just got to put the time in now to get those triad shapes under my fingers! Great videos (here and on A.W.).
You the man. I have been playing for years doing double stops, triple stops, and quad stops, but just now finding out what Triads are called. Sort of funny. You are a great teacher and musician.
❤️❤️❤️ this is NOT just a Great lesson, it’s pure generosity.... so much dense knowledge and experience shared with everybody..... thanks VERY much Guthrie
Good Advice Guthrie. Your discussions are useful even old guys like me. I have been playing for about 60 years and spent at least 50 of those years playing clubs. I haven't been in Nashville since 1971. You talk too much? Nah! Hey isn't that an old blues tune by Albert Collins? 😀
I liked the movable chords you discuss, especially the C shape. I have never used that before and I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that, since I've been playing since about 1966! Never too old to learn something new. Thanks for showing that.
You are really teaching very well in This video of moving the triads,Guthrie. Any one who says you don’t teach on your You Tube videos is a fool or ignorant of the guitar👍👏 Jim from Western PA
Thank you, Guthrie. You are very generous in sharing your knowledge and experience. I have a similar approach to seeing the fretboard, but you give a very practical system of how to have command over the changes.
Thank you for pouring into us your music knowledge. I followed guys in Contemporary Christian guitarist like Gordan Kennedy, Tom Hemby, Lincoln Brewster, etc. I would just listen to records they played on trying to pick up what they were doing. Now, you come along actually showing us. Thank you sir.
Thanks for all these VALUABLE lessons man ! Your lessons of CAGED system/ Triads/ Solo over chord changes/ are precious ! So thankful that we have guitarist like you to share these knowledge through UA-cam ! I I don't know if you can show us some practice we can do daily to connect each CAGED system shape with its pentatonic scale/ triads/ arpeggios /diatonic scales, potentially some phrasing or music lines ? This will help to visualize them and improve finger dexterity (I assume). Again, thank you for sharing all these valuable lessons ! From Louisville KY ! Hope one day you can come down here for some clinics !
JinJin Zhang Thanks a bunch man!! I love Louisville. I’d be happy to do a Skype lesson with you to unlock some of these secrets and dial into your style. Just email bookings@guthrietrapp.com for all details and scheduling.
Wow! Guthrie, I'm just coming to see you now and am quite blown away by your technique. I've watched this video 3 times and its taken me that long for it to sink in...but now I'm starting to see the shapes and it has been a complete game changer for me. Thank you for posting this gem!
Great demonstration of the chords inversions and how they are sewn progressively to bring out that melodic sound from the strings , thanks for sharing your expertise on guitar bro.
Good stuff dude, as someone who has been playing for 30 years, winging it without any knowledge for most of it, I thank you for taking the time to Share. Very informative stuff!
Thanks brother. This definitely helps me out. I've been playing a long time but never bothered to strat learning theory until recently. My playing has gotten so much better in the last few months because of it.
Who else has this video on repeat so we can watch this lesson over and over?
These are the prime secrets of guitar. Thank you Guthrie Trapp.

these hidden gems up and down the neck of the guitar.
Joelikesguitar Thanks man!!
For as long as you don’t see 60% of comments saying that you talk too much, keep doing those nice videos the way you do. 🤓
Nikoo033 Ha! Thanks man!!

I feel the same way, to me it’s straight to the point no nonsense valuable information that we can immediately apply
Thank you so much for your generosity and knowledge! My favorite teacher on UA-cam!
Jorey Reitman Thanks man!!
Many great players don't, but Guthrie has the gift as a teacher as well as being a great player.
Not only a great player but a great teacher. Rare.
Guthrie Trapp and Corey Congilio, my favourite teachers and helluva players!

you're the kind of teacher I wish I had when I was a teenager. I'd probably be playing a guitar for a living as well.

Landon Cunningham Thanks man! That’s right. I never thought of that 😎👍🎶
Thank You Sir...I have only recently cracked open my mind around the everything-ness of triads, or more importantly, recognizing the sounds of these triads and the relationship of those sounds to each other....I actually don't have the words to express how fundamentally life changing this is but I thank musicians and teachers like you and Tomo F. for showing me the light....
Man, that was a great lesson. When you played those tasteful lead guitar lines, I could hear EVERY chord change underneath! Your method of teaching is so easy to understand. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and God bless!
Beebocaster96 Great!! Thanks a bunch man!!
This is the single greatest guitar lesson video ever produced and that the is the absolute truth.
This is a top notch lesson i paid to learn alot of what is in this video. I hope ppl realize how important this lesson is.
Joey Farley Thanks a lot man!!
Triads are so important!! Great lesson!!
People that say you talk too much are idiots. Either they know the material or not. If they already know it, they should move to your next lesson. If they need to learn it, they should sure as hell listen to your wisdom and amazing teaching approach. Keep doing it man!
Wish we had UA-cam and access to such great players like you back in the 90s when I was starting. Thanks a million
Guthrie and Ford Thurston are bringing you tube lessons to a more advanced level, and I love it
Gary Eggleton Thanks man!!!
No, Guthrie, you're not talking too much. Everything you're saying clearly illustrates what you're doing on the guitar and helps players understand how and why it works. Great lesson. Thanks.
davess23 Thank you man!
I am on month 3 of the ArtistWorks material and this all fits together. Wish this was around when I was younger. My wife calls it my self indulgent routine. LOL. Having fun.
Michael P Awesome! Thanks a bunch man! Spread the word! 😎👍🎶
We're here because we like your playing. You're doing a great job presenting the material Just the right amount of talking and playing. This triad stuff is great and what I like about your playing. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Sellarmusic Well thanks man!! Happy to help.
Unreal guitar playing, all your lesson are brilliant and well informed. Thank you for sharing your skills with us mere mortals, much appreciated Guthrie
Matthew Allen Wow. Thanks a ton man!! Means a lot.
One of the best lessons I have seen!
You are the guitar man, Guthrie! We can see and hear your great playing today, but we didn't see the thousands of hours you put in learning this stuff. A gold nugget from this lesson is "there are no shortcuts."
Great stuff! The way you break down the cords opens up the fretboard. Thank you, keep up the good work.
Carl Craig Thanks man!!
@@guthrietrappmusic you're welcome.
This is one of those videos that connected a bunch of different things for me. Mind blown.
Alex Hanger Great!! Thanks man!!
6 hours later...i have finish to learn the 40 sec of your improvisation. Thanks so much to help me understanding my favorite instrument. Your generosity is awesome. Best regards from france.
Another super useful & insightful lesson, you are a wise and generous man G.T. Thanks. & you don't talk to much!
batstube Thanks a bunch man!!
This was an incredibly helpful lesson for me. Thanks so much.
Guthrie shows you that once you know the rules, you can break the rules…
Probably the best instructional video I’ve seen in 50 years of guitar playing …
If I ever meet you Guthrie, I will bring a bottle of VSOP Cognac ….
Music is the true religion…
Your tips on triads and playing the chord changes are so good. Keep it up!
ChrisJL 84 Thanks a bunch man!!
Agree, superb stuff to learn and work on. Thank you for breaking in down.
electricj5 Thanks man!!
This explanation is great...lots of stuff finally clicking!
trushack Great!! Thanks man!!
This popped up on my screen and I have to say it is the best explanation of triads and how to use the caged system to understand how the guitar works that I have ever seen. Thanks! Now I have some work to do.
Thank you for showing the things you have learned and the work you have done, I can only speak for myself, but I know I can say everyone who loves music, appreciates you so much for giving us a chance to learn from a true artist.
charles baviera Thanks a bunch man!!
Another outstanding video! Thank you Guthrie Trapp! It’s always awesome when I end my shift at the hospital and find a new upload! Much obliged!
mike finn Thanks man!
This is a wealth of information! I play professionally and wish somebody had spelled this stuff out so clearly for me a a ong time ago. I’d encourage any serious aspiring player to live and breathe this lesson, and review these basic building blocks often. Thank you so much, you’re a great player AND educator !
Emerson Swinford Wow. Thanks so much man. Means a whole lot!
Guthrie Trapp look me up via my website if you find yourself in LA. I’d def would like a one on one lesson.
In the meantime would you do a video on incorporating what you practice into the gig ? I’m guilty of working on something in practice that goes out the window when I Jam or on the gig.
Hey Guthrie. You're teaching style is excellent. And you're lessons are making a huge difference for me, so thank you.
Aylbdr Madison Thanks a bunch man!!
Jeremy Gayness Thanks man! It does work. It’s everything.
Philip Walton Thanks a bunch man!! So glad it’s working!
You the man. I have been playing for years doing double stops, triple stops, and quad stops, but just now finding out what Triads are called. Sort of funny. You are a great teacher and musician.
3 month ago i strugle, but now i "see triads" .. great practice lesson ..open new world..Break down Big Barre chords 1 3 5 and u got triads.beautifull
❤️❤️❤️ this is NOT just a Great lesson, it’s pure generosity.... so much dense knowledge and experience shared with everybody..... thanks VERY much Guthrie
30 minutes of the most crucial guitar information 👍
You’re a great teacher my friend. Making sense after all these years!
David Bennett Ha!! Yes it is! Thanks a ton man!!
So great stuff Guthrie! It changed your life and now it is changing mine also ...
That was such a great video, thanks for sharing Guthrie! Love your channel
David guitar madman Thanks man!!
Any one who says you don’t teach on your You Tube videos is a fool or ignorant of the guitar👍👏
Jim from Western PA
Thank you, Guthrie. You are very generous in sharing your knowledge and experience. I have a similar approach to seeing the fretboard, but you give a very practical system of how to have command over the changes.
Thank you for pouring into us your music knowledge. I followed guys in Contemporary Christian guitarist like Gordan Kennedy, Tom Hemby, Lincoln Brewster, etc. I would just listen to records they played on trying to pick up what they were doing. Now, you come along actually showing us. Thank you sir.
ancctech Thanks a bunch man!! You’re welcome!!
Hugely helpful - helped me connect so many dots about questions I've had for decades. Many thanks!
Erik Aagard Great man!! Thanks
Same with me! makes learning fun!
Good stuff dude, as someone who has been playing for 30 years, winging it without any knowledge for most of it, I thank you for taking the time to Share.
Very informative stuff!
Awesome lesson GT, thanks so much and enjoy the Big Easy!
irwinm2001 Thanks man!!
Thanks brother. This definitely helps me out. I've been playing a long time but never bothered to strat learning theory until recently. My playing has gotten so much better in the last few months because of it.
Thank you very much! This lesson is perfect timing for my guitar journey.
Richard Rogo Great! Thanks man!!
Always learn some high quality advanced stuff from your videos - Thank You
Joe Brown Thanks man!!
Guthrie...thanks so much, I’ve played over 30 years and this nails it regardless of where your at.
