Brilliant as always. If some guy says you talk too much, then take no heed, thats BS. Your explations are excellent and in plain speak, which makes what you say logical and completely fit. After 40yrs of playing, Im hanging off your every word-I wish I had known then what Im learning from you now. I thought I was a decent player but I was missing so very much. Sorted now though. Thanks so much for what youre doing.

Very good stuff here folks. It don't get no better than this. Get the information, if you take your time and watch/listen and learn what he's offering here it could last you a lifetime. Keep in mind this is how he makes his living, so show some gratitude and give back. No I do not know him personally, but what I do know is that what he's teaching is worth something.
And by the way Guthrie, you do not talk to much. 😆 just the opposite in my opinion, the more you talk the more we understand.
This is the real deal teaching here. If you want to know your instrument better learn what he's showing you in this video.
    Thanks Guthrie

This lesson is worth in gold. If you want to take your guitar playing to next level. Watch this video, and everything Guthrie shows here. If you dont understand something rewind and watch again until you do. Dont go to the next lesson or video. This concepts will take a while to sink in under fingers. Important part is that you understand the idea and then work on it until you dont have to think about it on the guitar. Guthrie thank you, you are a great player and teacher!

That triad change for the dominant 7th and major 7th, from major. Is priceless for me today. I’ve hit a wall with the guitar, wanted to be a blues man. So like every one else learnt all the pentatonic scales and shapes. And wasn’t ever playing the changes. I could hear the notes in the pentatonic, but never played the change. So have recently resolved myself to learn the triads. Have only been doing major and minors trying to sing them and play them and trying to call out the thirds and fifths. To get my ears more able to hear the inversions. All feels clunky, but understand as you mention in the vid. You have to put the work in. But that one little trick a turned a light on. On;y just found you and Tom, from the Brad pappa footage of that gig you did for in stereo. I’m 52 and the only music I’ve ever heard that moved me before was from the 70s. You two are the only two musicians I can think of that put me in that space. Who are current and best of all open and transparent about their craft. And share like you do. Been a rough three years been a black dog on my tail. But you two made see. The guitar is a place you can put that negativity and learn to smile again.
    Thank you both.

If I’m understanding things...the key is knowing where the 1,3,5 is of the chord you are playing over all over the the neck and then using other intervals to add flavor, but trying to emphasize the main triad in each chord as safe tones.

Thank you for giving me a new access to playing the guitar. After a break of 25 years I started to play the guitar two years ago and with the help of youtube tutorials it is now muck easier to make progress, especially because of your great tutorials, my guitar playing improved significantly. I am a huge fan of you, your person and your guitar playing. Unfortunarely my familiy (wife and 5 kids, 2 dogs, 4 cats... and 7 chicken) has to suffer, because they find me more and more spending hours in my music room, practice my guitar playing. I've likely commented on this video before and for me it's perfect exercise work, but I can see many of us will be overwhelmed by the amount of complexity that it "seems" to represent. But, guys, that is what the stop button is for. Use it! STOP and go back, over and over if necessary because this is the stuff we all need to get. Don't give up. Go as slow as you need. Learn a bit and hold on that until it sticks. Come back tomorrow and go over it again and learn some more!

Guthrie thanks for all you do…and no you don’t talk to much…instructors have a tendency to gloss over key things the student needs to know, because the instructor assumes the student already knows it. Sometimes it’s the forgotten details(what the instructor leaves out) that are what’s required for the students to make the connection. A good teacher explains why and how the things we “practice” relate to the ultimate goal of learning the skill. Please keep doing what you do…I don’t think the folks that are being critical realize how lucky they are to have a professional take personal time from their busy schedule and make the huge effort to share precisely, gems learned over a lifetime of playing the instrument. Thanks!

What Guthrie’s saying really works. Focusing on the chord shapes, triad inversions and intervals has totally changed my ability to play melodically and navigate the fretboard. I was surprised how quickly I improved when I started studying this method after seeing Guthrie talk about it in his first Brett Papa interview appearance. Joey Landreth also references learning the neck in triad inversions and intervals in his interviews. It’s the missing piece if you’re stuck in the pentatonic boxes like I was. Thank you Guthrie for changing my musical life and sharing your knowledge. You’re an amazing player and a good human being.

I made it 20 years with no lessons teaching myself out of guitar world tabs. Needless to say all I really knew how to do was a couple positions of minor pentatonic and that’s really it. Was interested in jazz after seeing a guy perform solo in a bar and started taking lessons from him. We started with the major scale and worked our way up from there. Learning these basics will change your playing immediately! I wish I would have learned this stuff when I started out. I’d be so much better than I am now. Great lesson Guthrie!

We're with you man, keep it coming. You are changing player's lives by explaining all this stuff the way you understand it. One thing that kind of hit me the other day is that your basic E, A and D shapes are structurally the same with 5, 1, 3 from top to bottom. That's pretty useful to keep in mind because you always move the lower string for major to minor change. The middle string always controls Maj7 or Dominant. Pretty cool when you sit there and think about it.

Thanks again Guthrie. This is a very complete and valuable 30mins. How to finally start to understand the fretboard? It's all here, in one amazing lesson. I wish I had this when I was 13 years old. This information was Impossible to find then, I didn't even know how to properly ask for what I was looking for, but I knew the sound I wanted to achieve. This is Gold Guthrie. Thanks for everything you've given to us on here. I now can put on a jam track and ideas I have actually make it to my fingers and on to the fretboard. That's something I couldn't figure out for almost 20 years, and now in 6 months, with your direction, it's possible.

Going back to basics while sheltering in place. This has helped greatly. Everyone needs to know this stuff no matter your level of playing.
    Thanks Guthrie!

You are the best man. So down to earth and humble. I got serious about guitar about four yrs ago diving into scales and such. I recently finally devoted myself to triads and my guitar life has changed completely. I don’t read music or anything, but it’s so true to say how triads open everything up and essentially result in a closer intimacy with the notes on the neck and all the connections to chords and scales. Progressions and leads just wash over you. Triads triads triads!

Thanks for a great lesson. I always hear triads are very important but nobody seems to explain how to use them for us common guitar folks. Thumps up!

Thank You Sir...I have only recently cracked open my mind around the everything-ness of triads, or more importantly, recognizing the sounds of these triads and the relationship of those sounds to each other....I actually don't have the words to express how fundamentally life changing this is but I thank musicians and teachers like you and Tomo F. for showing me the light....

I love this. I've known for a while that if you can build a basic major triad you can reach all of those other voicing the same way around the neck. But it's been a challenging actually wrapping my head around it and putting it into practice. This explanation is great...lots of stuff finally clicking!

Thank you for pouring into us your music knowledge. I followed guys in Contemporary Christian guitarist like Gordan Kennedy, Tom Hemby, Lincoln Brewster, etc. I would just listen to records they played on trying to pick up what they were doing. Now, you come along actually showing us. Thank you sir.

thanks for what you do, Guthrie. french classes teach grammatically correct french. it’s nothing like the way the french really talk to each other. thanks for keeping the music real, my friend.

@GuthrieTrapp Thank you so much for what you share here and the way you share it, great content and great presentation - don't change a thing!. For many these videos are truly life changing. I hope you know that!. And the only way "talk too much" comment makes any sense to me is if you take it in the sense that when you play its just so amazing and wonderful to listen to, such beautiful musicality, and feeling!. I don't think you could talk or play too much!... I LOVE hearing what you have to say and when you play I'm just stunned. Thank you!.

People that say you talk too much are idiots. Either they know the material or not. If they already know it, they should move to your next lesson. If they need to learn it, they should sure as hell listen to your wisdom and amazing teaching approach. Keep doing it man!
