I went to college. You can do the “fun” parts without going to school. Just move to a college town. My degree was in Criminal Justice with a minor in Kinesiology. I took the law enforcement route and was a cop for just over 4 years. Ended my career as a patrol Sgt making 48k working long hours. I have 3 kids and a wife. 141 flight school is up to 100k just in tuition, not to mention it’s basically full time so you can’t work. I was looking at loans that the flight schools offered and the total price was between 267k-347k by time you pay it off(depending on the term length). That’s with me having a great credit score, high gpa in college, and law enforcement/military background that some of these financial institutions use to determine pricing. It’s by no means cheap. Unless you grew up in aviation with a parent/family member who has access to cheap or free training, you’re going to be deep in the hole. Also to mention, 141 flight schools will get you anywhere between 250-270 hours of flight time when you’re done. You are then to figure out how you can get the other 1250-1230hrs that majority of airline jobs require. Hopefully your 141 flight school hires you as a flight instructor when you’re done. Sadly I’m just not as the time in life now where I can make it happen without bringing my family down to barebones living while I chase a dream. My advice to those who have no kids/wife is to start asap. (It’s important to add two of kids are under the age of three so my wife stays with then because childcare is also very expensive)You’ll eventually have a family at some point while you’re paying off that massive loan but you won’t be in the early years of the struggle. You should hopefully have your butt in a high paying seat when you decide to have kids/get married.
I’m a junior at a local four your college. Want to get started with flight training next summer. Any advice?
Hi John! Interesting take. I have a Senior deep in doing this research. We have talked to several pilots that went to UND, and several came out with over 700 and 800 hours due to the simulators. They are all Captains now.
@@ineshutchins2619 Sorry, but is UND a university? If they are captains now then they have most likely been out of a flight school for a few years. Most 141 academies do 9 month, 12 month, or 15 month long academies.
@@johnsmithh662 UND = University of North Dakota. It’s a 4 year bachelor’s degree just like Embry Riddle. They made Captain in about 6 years after graduating college. I was referring to the hours within the program… they graduating with between 700-800 hours. Now, I understand that’s very dependent on if they were CFIs, etc, but they said they accumulated lot of hours due to using simulators too.
@johnsmithh662 I have the same exact story as you Brotha, 4 1/2 years as leo, college with Criminal justice degree minor in anthropology just without the wife and kids. Looking to make the jump next year. Thinking about switching agencies for more hefty access to crazy off duty pay to be able to afford flight school. Just did my first discovery two days ago and was completely hooked. It was inspiring to see we had a similar background and the interests going forward is the same. As encouragement to you Brother, maybe use what you got already in certification as Leo to lateral somewhere to get access to crazier funds that can get you in that seat in the sky. That’s my goal. I know I’d be silly to think it’s inexpensive but I’ll tell you that I’d much rather the stress as a pilot than the stress of running patrol for a full career and constantly have to look over the shoulder. At the end of the day, just gotta do what’s best for the family. Stay encouraged my man! Thank you for your service💪🏾💙
As always your content is very informative. Nice to see you back to filming. For a moment it seemed like you hung up what you said makes you happy most filming for another relationship. Be true to you, don’t change for anyone else.
Hey Garrett, I am in the Aviation program at Purdue University. I did a lot of research and I must say for me, having that degree will open up opportunities that a diploma may not. I’m not knocking the flight school route, but when it came to finances, Purdue gave me a chance.
Is the Aviation program at Purdue top notch?
How was it, did u make it?
Garrett, my son applied to Auburn, UND, SIU, Uof Oklahoma, Florida Tech, and Purdue. He's been accepted to most of them so far, but his number one pick is Purdue and he has to wait until January for a response. If he wasn't to get in, he's pretty lost on where to go... He's afraid of the cold at Grand Forks😂. SIU gave him amazing scholarships so he would have to consider that. Tough choices!
@@StrictlySportsHe has a 3.7 gpa. Strong curriculum with Varsity sports and President of his high school aviation club. He didn't apply to Ohio State simply because it was so expensive for out-of-state. He got his acceptance yesterday for University of Oklahoma. He's still holding out for Purdue! 😅
Go accelerated flight University’s are a huge waste
Hey Garrett, on one of your previous videos, you mentioned if you had to do it again you would have gone to ATP. Do you think you would still do the same? Im looking to start next year.
That’s my question as well, thank you.
From what I have heard from pilots they say it’s a good program but in the end how much you will pay from interest rates will cost you more in the end that some colleges. You most likely would have to take out a personal loan which is are 15% interest rate where student loans are around 7-9%
How About Epic flight Academy & Phoenix East Aviation?
hey garrett do you recommend a flight college or a accelerated program for someone in highschool i’m not sure what i want to i want to be at the airline at 21 but i also want to go to college so what would you recommend
Hey Garrett how is Bella? I miss her in your videos. As always, great video.
well lets be honest, your dad, grandpa and uncle are all pilots so it was easier for you to make a decision especially when your dad took you and your brother up in his plane to show you the controls from a young age. but speaking of your dad, i am sure he will be back in town next may to visit your grandma, will you be there this time?
Sign me up for JOE'S FLIGHT SCHOOL.. 😂
Hope you are adjusting well with the move man !
I'mm happy becouse you are here on You Tube I know you stay good.
First comment. And what I was exactly needing!!
Love this vid thanks g!!
Hey Garrett, what what would you recommend doing interms of paying for flight school and also working a job while in flight school ?
Can anybody tell me just how you're supposed to decide AGAINST a flight school? Do you look it up before visiting in person? Do you walk onto (into) the place and ask certain questions, then say "I've gotta go" when you realize this is not the right school? What questions should I even ask? There are two or three flight schools in the area where I live, by the way.
Garrettt I need more videos bro I am waiting for u to post more please read this and please post more !!!
This 4 min vid is not a deep dive. Bro, you have a platform that can help a lot of future pilots, but this vid needs to be edited with more content.
You made no mention of cost which discourages a lot of people from completing flight training. Prestiges aviation schools can add up to $250,000 in student loan debt (probably $300,000 with todays interest rates). Most airlines do not require a 4 year degree anymore, so no one needs to pay a "doctors tuition" for a flight training unless it financially works for them: IE, G.I. Bill, or aviation grants. I personally paid my own way through flight training and attended a prestiges aviation college online (which was 1/3 of the cost). Today, I have no student loan debt meanwhile, I fly with First Officers that have over $200,000 in student loan debt with the same degree.
Please add more content to this video with options for future pilots that don't have a mommy or daddy that can pay their way through flight training. just my 2 cents...
WE ARE STILL TEXTIING .... WITH SO CALLED GARRETT
It really hurts me because it’s starting to feel like my dream of becoming a pilot is just a dream.
@@ZOne_26it’s not negativity, it’s the reality that flight school costs hundreds of thousands.
I feel your pain for sure. It's the question of whether or not things would wind up not working out for some unforseen reason and trapping myself in a financial hole for the rest of my life that's killing me.
@@jarodwooten5049 Exactly, I’m stuck between my thoughts.I want to become a pilot really badly and I’m wondering if I gave it my all would it still work ? I’m 18 and where tf will I get all this money from . Idk that’s just life sometimes the winds do not blow as vessels wishes I guess
@@johnsmithh662 absolutely true
@alienz1664 I'm 24, and I truly wish I had been interested while in high-school. Now I have the addition of bills and rent that would compound with tuition. There are ways to get assistance though, and every single take I've heard on it is that it's worth the struggle and effort.
read my mind the video I needed
Ein absolut toller Pilot!🥰🥰🥰
Can you please suggest some top flying schools in USA or Dubai? I'm moving to get a bachelor's degree in aviation management first, then I'll join any flying school. And secondly FAA certification is must for joining aviation? Or can I move ahead with CAA certification? I am born for aviation🛩️🧑✈️🖤
Regards

Love the Riddle thumbnail🤣
Ein absolutely toller pilot🥰🥰🥰
What Universities would you recommend?
CAU “California aeronautical university”
UND and Purdue are good! I went and toured UND last week!!
None go to an accelerated program
