You should do an update to this video and put it in the context of what COVID19 has done to the airline industry. Does it make much sense for a 19 year old kid to spend at least $50,000 over the next 15 months in training only to struggle finding a job in a saturated job market?
There will always be a shortage of pilots due to the cost of getting a commercial license and the fact that with each year flights are cheaper and cheaper + more people fly It was calculated that in 2029 with the current rate we will see a shortage of 60000 pilots world wide and there will be more than 390k jobs available so being a pilot will land you a job
I'm 29 and I'm in trying to transition from media to become a pilot. I spoke with three pilots and they each said "do it and do it now." At first, I'm like, "but it's saturated." One said, "No, it's going to be a shortage in less than 10 years. You need to get your foot in the door, start now." So they each advise that I find flight and ground school training at an affordable rate, take loans to cover it, and slowly defer the loan and pay the interest or whatever I can. Then, when I get hired at a regional, I can start paying back the loan aggressively. Then, when I make it to the airlines, I can pay it off even more aggressively until it's fully paid off in less than 3 years. I don't know how ideal it is because I'm not in the situation. But, so far, the pilots I spoke with are saying the same thing.

As a truck driver. The only real difference is my medical cert is every 2 yrs as compared to 6-12 months. The family time away for me is 6 weeks away then 4-5 days home. Our work schedule is DOT regulated. I would love to be a pilot!
The point you made about losing your medical if something uncontrollable happens is really scary to think about! Would you recommend getting a degree in something unrelated to aviation just for a plan B in case something like that happens? if that makes sense?
i’m 17 and is friends with a pilot, he told me that if i want to become a pilot, i should always have a backup plan in case something goes wrong such as failing to obtain my class 1 medical. hope this helps.
Garrett, you are sooo right about flying, it is the best career and the young people today have the best chance in the world of making that happen for themselves. I was not so fortunate as I try to rationalize why I didn't push harder to have an airline career as a pilot. Oh I've been with a major airline for close to 50 years now and probably, as you point out in Ep.13, I should have put more of other things aside and concentrated on my flying. I got my private in '73, then instrument, commercial, multi-eng, by '81 ... It's easier for me to rationalize other events that put my flying career on hold, wife, children, then in '80s I went to commuters, (as you know where all pilots built their hours), like Air Wisconsin, Great Lakes Aviation, etc... only to be told that they raised their requirements to (get this) higher than the majors. As I was told they were tired of losing their pilots after 1 year. then of course Eastern Airlines folded putting God knows how many pilots in line up and then Braniff Airlines folded... i couldn't get a break... I love flying and now am working on my soaring addition..I have always been healthy as you point out. I have been around airplanes my whole life and given a choice right now there is nothing I wouldn't do even for the right seat. Like i said earlier the young kids today have the best chance in EVER to be a pilot.. There is such a shortage that many of the Major Airlines are paying for your training above private... United even has commercials about being an Airline pilot.. Anyway love your episodes and will continue to be a fan
I would have to disagree with right now being the "BEST" opportunity for young people to become pilots. Yes demand for pilots is at an all time high, but most young people can barely afford college degrees without some kind of tuition assistance, and full flight training up to ATP can cost upwards of 100k-120k nowadays. and the majors arent offering that much in the way of tuition assistance/reimbursement comparative to the full cost of training.
Hey garret personally I'm making a career change into aviation and fitness is very important to me. My current job I'm able to maintain a good physique. But I'd love if you could do a work vlog and how you pack your food and gym sessions stuff like that

I'd like to know how you find so much time to workout. Your job overwhelms personal time. If it's not the days away from home, it's the toll jetlag takes on the body.
His dad was a pilot but didn’t teach him as his cfi. What you should do is approach your parents and ask them why they’re too poor to send you through flight school. Maybe then you’ll know

I wanted to be a pilot when I was in high school, especially a fighter jet. But They told me I don't have 20/20 so I couldn't. Gave up on it. and a few years ago, I just had the chance to do the eye test for free. I was told I have slightly better vision than 20/20. My girlfriend (now fiancee) says it's now or never, why not give it a try? The weather is unpredictable now, but I have my first flight class this month.
Just a YSK on the sleep schedule portion, melatonin IS approved by the faa. And more importantly does NOT make you groggy in the morning. This is a very common placebo effect/misunderstanding with melatonin, its just a dietary supplement. Its a natural hormone your body produces when it wants you to sleep anyway. After taking it, the supplement wears off within 1-2 hours, leaving 0 after effects the morning after. The groggy feeling is either a placebo from you being told it will make you groggy the morning after, or more commonly, its because people usually take melatonin AFTER trying to sleep and not being able to, so by the time they take it, it's already late and they wont get as much sleep as they need to (i.e. less than 8 hours, usually 6 or less), and they will wake up groggy due to the lack of sleep, but attribute it to the melatonin. As an addon, caffeine has FAR more negative side effects than melatonin. If you are actually trying to perform to the best of your abilities in an aircraft, ESPECIALLY for the HOURS that an airline flight is, you should stop all intake of caffeine, and try getting more sleep. If you think you NEED caffeine at this point, that is even more of a reason to quit, caffeine isn't chemically addictive, but is highly behaviorally addictive, and NEEDING it, is a major sign of addiction, no one should NEED caffeine to wake up and function in the morning. If you have trouble getting up and alert in the morning without caffeine, and after your withdrawals are over (which yes, caffeine withdrawals are absolutely a thing, that should be telling in and of itself), you should increase your water intake (although nearly EVERYONE needs to increase water intake. 75% of ALL Americans are chronically dehydrated!!), drinking more water, ALLOT more, will wake you up, make you more alert, and energize you, not to mention will make you far healthier in general. Drinking more water, in general, is the single thing ANYONE can do to make themselves healthier, and ESPECIALLY if you drink coffee, as its a diuretic so will make you MORE dehydrated, if you drink coffee, you should be drinking WAY more water. A general rule I go by is for every cup of coffee, 4 cups of water, 1/4 ratio coffee to water. If you actually try this you'll notice you have to pee a TON, this is actually NORMAL, people are so dehydrated they think you only have to pee once or twice a day. A properly hydrated person will urinate 6-7 times a day or more, the reason you pee so little is because you are DEHYDRATED! TL;DR Melatonin is fine (and actually looks promising as a preventative measure against Alzheimer's), coffee is NOT fine, and you ALL should drink A LOT more water!

If they would people would do something else most probably. Hence that would have a higher drop rate compared to people that actually go through the training.
Don't bother yourself with all those stories about hiring process. Just be current with your ATPL knowledge, understand principles of flight, review jeppensen chart manual i be cooperative on the sim check. In this way you will not overstress ;) At least it worked for me ;p
I'm so glad you said that at the beginning about loving your career, I'm surprised that when economy gets bad airline has better job security then corporate, thought wealthy people fly corporate and if they are wealthy would still fly when economy is down

This is definitely a dream job for me but it sucks to hear how often your gone from family :/ I have a 7 year old and I would just hate to miss time with him.
It’s all relative. Here is my experience with having a “normal” M-F type job and now working as a pilot 15 days per month (Note: I am not married and do not have children so take that into consideration). For example, when I was working a “normal” day job with a 1 hour commute, I would leave house around 0630 for work and return home around 1800 (traffic was heavier in afternoon). Then make dinner, cleanup, pack lunch for next day, enjoy some free time (tv, work in garage, etc) then go to bed and repeat. This was Monday thru Friday. So my weekday evenings at home basically gave me about 2 hours of free time to do what I wanted (which isn’t much time). And then the 2-day weekend went super fast, and bam!…it was ,Monday again and back to work. Now, as a pilot for a large carrier….yes, I am completely gone 15 days a month. BUT…the other 15 days I am completely off and I love that. To me, it is a much better quality of life than what I had before (for me personally). I turn my work phone off, I do not look at emails, and my time is my own).
My husband is thinking of a career change and I'm terrified of him never being home. No amount of money in the world is worth missing out on your family and children. I will never understand this.
Its not like your never home. With any job you will always be away from home (unless you work from home obviously). Pilots are gone maybe 2-3 days out of the week and home all day for the rest of the week. It's just simply a different schedule of work than what most people are used to. Most pilots only work 75-85 hours a month.
I went to ATP and I had to withdraw due to very little time to train on each block and I got paired with a horrible instructor who was no help. I went up to director of training to get paired with another instructor to no avail. 2 months I was forced into withdrawal. The next flight school I enrolled mom and pop, I learned more in one day than I did in the whole two months.
Atp is tough. You need to make learning about flying your number one priority. It’s lots of focus and a little fun when you can squeeze it in. I just passed com and in the CFI academy right now. It’s tough but doable. You’ll here a lot of good and bad about the program. Most of the bad are from people that were unsuccessful in the program. If you are a slow learner then a mom and pop shop may be better for you because they tend to go at your pace. I’d suggest coming in knowing as much as possible. It’s a lot of self studying once your in anyways. Best of luck and sorry for the late response I don’t have notifications on.

Im just starting out and honestly the medical kind of terrifies me. I feel like I finally found my passion in aviation but I do have a couple questionable things in my medical history, namely I had a super minor seizure many many years ago (isolated event thankfully, was literally discharged from the hospital an hour later) AND I was medicated for adhd a while back. Fingers crossed It'll be okay. Ive read stories of people passing with much worse than just this but Ive also heard of people failing it for less.
Good info for those considering the career. Who do you work for? Looks like an AA uniform. I was a long time Eagle guy now at AA. By the way....melatonin is approved. 👍🏻. Also, for me it’s 10 hours at the hotel.
Depends where you fly. I’m in an integrated program in Canada and it’s about 18 months but i heard of students in Florida who went from 0 hours to Ppl, Cpl, Multi-Ifr in one year.
One screw up out of service.. ATC clearance always a big screw up especially in Honduras..Violating a sterile cockpit below 10000, a couple degrees off the center line..One mistake, OOS. .
I take medication and i was told that i have to get off it in order to get a medical for private pilot license. Fortunately i can still fly as long as i am with instructor but cannot under no circumstances fly alone.
I’ve only been interested in being a pilot recently from playing flight simulator. My uncle is a pilot. I was always scared of heights but now that I’m over that it seems very interesting and cool to do, I might ask my uncle what it took him to get where he is now and then try to follow that path
College was not for me, my parents tried to push me to become an electrician or welder once I got out of high school, I signed up for clases but I never went because it’s not what I wanted to do. I’m now 21 and have enrolled to my local community college for aviation
The military pays for flight school + college! I'm joining the Air Force for 4 years then start getting my bachelors degree and do flight school at the same time.

health part is huge for me, I'm getting ready to start flight school but a personal goal I set for myself was getting my shit together and losing the extra weight first. The way I see it if I cant take care of myself how can someone expect me to take care of a beautiful machine.
To all military veterans wishing to become pilots. Please, use your G.I. Bill for all of your flight training. Flight Schools are vocational schools, which the G.I. Bill will pay for.
Just my subjective observation, but older pilots look like they have aged much faster. Example "Sully" Sullenberger looked 70 in in his fifties. Also from my observations when I worked for an airline.
Being a pilot is immensenly stressful; first the responsibility for fellow passengers and crew, secondly, the schedule and the stress on your sleeping patterns; thirdly, constant exam revision and the threat of physical medical examination and finally being away from loved ones a lot. The UV radiation at altiutude does not help either, poor diet in the sky, isn't helpful either.
I was an airline pilot for 25 years. I never thought of it as any more stressful than driving a car. Once in a while its tense when the weather is really nasty but it certainly isnt like that every day. The schedule can be tiring in the early part of your career when you are low on the totem pole but the last third of my career I mostly worked 3-4 days a week and was home most nights. I didnt commute. The varying sleeping patterns were hard when you had different early start times every morning. I got around that a third of the way into my career by bidding for only flights that started after 10am. I then had a normal sleep pattern whether at home or work.
Thanks Garret for bringing more clarity towards being a pilot. However, I have an interest in the Dassault Falcon 900. And I like to know witch school I would start off from a "hypothetical " standpoint in order to fly such a plane?
Ronald Davis it’s all the same. Once you’ve gotten your commercial, multi engine and instrument ratings, you just have to build flight time. Once you have the hours required to command such a position, you apply for companies that fly the Falcon. It’s still generally gonna be 1500 hours (ATP Mins) however insurance can dictate different hour requirements.
Active duty military. I sleep 6 hours a day , rarely see my kids , get swapped around different shifts on the regular bases. I got this 😄
That's why mostly military guys become pilots. They're used to it.
Same!!

Working for the railroad is a similar lifestyle. I am a locomotive engineer. Always been fascinated with flying. You have convinced me it is just as bad lifestyle wise as a pilot. Calling in sick is the most liberating thing ever.
I’m 36 years old looking for a career change. I appreciate you making this video, definitely feel a little better about taking the first step and scheduling my discovery flight soon. Wish me luck!
But I'd love if you could do a work vlog and how you pack your food and gym sessions stuff like that
Tristan Beckwith yeah would be interested in this also
Great video! Love when you have videos about being an airline pilot. I am a student pilot myself and would like to be an airline pilot and these videos are really helpful!
I loved your reasons. Yes they are pretty much accurate, especially the family part. That's the toughest one.
I'd like to know how you find so much time to workout. Your job overwhelms personal time. If it's not the days away from home, it's the toll jetlag takes on the body.
More like how to train that discipline to keep going at it lmao I'm interested
Once you hit the hotel and you’re done with the day, hit the gym right away, that’s what i do😂

That’s literally not what happened but okay.
His dad was a pilot but didn’t teach him as his cfi. What you should do is approach your parents and ask them why they’re too poor to send you through flight school. Maybe then you’ll know

Thanks for covering the topic. I been asking for awhile. Thanks

Can ya make a video about flight training, cost, and the classes plus training

"I just went through 'recurrent training' - thus I am sporting the three day growth beard.

I'd definitely like to see a video on Recurrent training. Please make one!
All your reasons for not being an airline pilot are true . I completed 39 years 24000 hours loved every minute not for everyone . Started as a
F/E on the DC 8 ended as a B777 Captain
I’d like to see a video on your favorite layover destinations and favorite places to eat and things to do on those layovers
Thanks for making this! I asked for this on the gram. Love your channel please keep the videos coming.
Yes we want a video on recurrent training!
Training vid please and not only the flying part but also the safety procedures and evacuations, nobody talks about that would be great to learn about that aspect of the airlines.
I was a firefighter/rescue diver for 33 years. I have been retired for 2.5 years and am looking forward to going to flight school and possibly embarking on a second career.
I am doing it for me!!!🛩️🛩️🛩️
I have a great retirement and if I only get to fly for a regional airline company, privately, or just teach and encourage others to become the best version of themselves… THAT IS WORTH BECOMING A PILOT AND FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR!!!
BEST OF LUCK TO ALL WHO MOVE IN THIS DIRECTION!!!🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️
Also a firefighter/paramedic of nearly 8 years. I’m also considering going. To flight school! Be interested in seeing what you think of it now!
You’re probably the fittest pilot on UA-cam, lol! so I’m wondering what is your diet like and how many days a week do you workout? It would be a tremendous help if you created a video with such information for us future pilots, to stay fit and maintain our medical. Thanks!
Like you said I would imagine being away from your family is one of the hardest things about being a pilot. but saying that soldiers have things much worse, they may not see the families for years at a time. I

I love flying and I love traveling. I don't plan on starting a familiy until I'm 35 so I don't really care about that. I'm more than happy to take on this job.
I love "breaking my leg" with you Garret...
Could you do a video on the hiring process and how that works? I’m going through flight training right now and it seems to be that no one really touches on the hiring/job seeking process in school
I'm so glad you said that at the beginning about loving your career, I'm surprised that when economy gets bad airline has better job security then corporate, thought wealthy people fly corporate and if they are wealthy would still fly when economy is down
🎉It is like a seamen, you are just on air all the time... I'm not lazy Garret... I just love future and vanity and good future...
Hey Garrett, Currently I am 16 and I have 8 hours from a flight camp at Embry Riddle. It’s a lot to understand regarding how to get into the airlines. Could you please consider making a video on the steps to get all of the ratings, degrees, etc? Thank you for all of the aviation content :)

You still flying?
United has a flight school that you can go to right out of high school. Otherwise paying a private teacher is expensiiive
@@alexiswashington3559 gotta pay the banz to make the banz. But this route can still be cheaper and faster than a university for example

Will be attending ATP flight school this year. I’m excited not really the best test taker but I’m gonna push through.
Samantha Hunte I’m in atp right now. It’s been a great program so far. Best of luck to you.
roger rowland how is it? Is it hard for you to keep up with the material you’re learning? N thank you
I went to ATP and I had to withdraw due to very little time to train on each block and I got paired with a horrible instructor who was no help. I went up to director of training to get paired with another instructor to no avail. 2 months I was forced into withdrawal.
The next flight school I enrolled mom and pop, I learned more in one day than I did in the whole two months.
alessio272 wow well I hope everything is looking up for you now.
Being away from family is definitely one of the biggest hinderances for me.
Thanks for such an informative video. Can you do a meal prep video? I’m always trying to get fresh new ideas for healthy meals

Hey Garrett, with your experiences so far would you be able to make a short video on pros and cons of a civil airline pilot vs a cargo pilot eg FedEx?

Keeping the medical is crucial, and a big problem especially as one gets older
Love this video, becoming a pilot is still my dream, but it gives a great insight of which things you should be aware of. What about Pilots and Tattoos? As I already mentioned I really want to become a commercial pilot and I'm thinking about having a little plane tattoo on my upper arm. I still have't done it because I'm afraid that it would have a negative effect on my application. What do you think about it?
@Ragnar [1919] Heey thanks! I have already seen this Video and unfortunately it dindn't really help me with my decision. I saw that he's wearing a tattoo on his arm so I thought maybe he could share his experiences with having a tattoo :)
You can have any tattoos you want as long as they're not visible while working.
Céline Freiburghaus in the comments Captain Joe said it was a fake tattoo. He just did it for the video
@@brianjordan1819 Yeah I know😂 Sorry I ment that garret has a Tattoo so he could share his experience☺️
Your very inspirational in your own way!
Great guy. Please minimize the frown lines it will ruin your good looks.
Great video to watch the day before my airline pilot interview 🤣😜
Great one caption love from miami happy landings
I was originally going to go to the airlines, but now I’ve been thinking about going corporate
Actually garret, its anywhere from 18 months to two years when you are an integrated student. Love your vids!
Depends where you fly. I’m in an integrated program in Canada and it’s about 18 months but i heard of students in Florida who went from 0 hours to Ppl, Cpl, Multi-Ifr in one year.
love the navitimer man, great watch!
One screw up out of service.. ATC clearance always a big screw up especially in Honduras..Violating a sterile cockpit below 10000, a couple degrees off the center line..One mistake, OOS.

I take medication and i was told that i have to get off it in order to get a medical for private pilot license. Fortunately i can still fly as long as i am with instructor but cannot under no circumstances fly alone.
oh i have a bad iron deficiency.. could i still become a pilot?
I’ve only been interested in being a pilot recently from playing flight simulator. My uncle is a pilot. I was always scared of heights but now that I’m over that it seems very interesting and cool to do, I might ask my uncle what it took him to get where he is now and then try to follow that path
The main problem for me though is cost. I don’t want to end up in too much debt
@@hugefootballfan2914 It's definitely a large investment, but well worth it!
College was not for me, my parents tried to push me to become an electrician or welder once I got out of high school, I signed up for clases but I never went because it’s not what I wanted to do. I’m now 21 and have enrolled to my local community college for aviation

@@kenweinreich8472 Is that an option for new pilots? To have a consistant sleep schedule?
Bravo e bellissimo Garrett

Night shift...long shifts....earn the money to buy an airline ticket or aircraft with pilots?
Can you do live video. So we can ask you directly
