I love this! The only downfall is getting through flight training and the massive cost. With the profits all these airlines are making you would think they would start recruiting cadets and footing the bill of training until they can get the 1,500 TT flight hours. In turn candidates sign contracts binding them to time owed for x amount of years. Once this is done, I can almost guarantee, your shortage will diminish. Grab people off the streets and put them through training. All these airlines can afford to do so, I guantee it.
I’m looking at going to the military for 4 years and then beginning flight school possibly while still active or after my contract but do you think that it’s good idea to go that route or would it be better to just get the loan and go straight to a flight school? I’m 21 right now and I don’t want to wait too long and there’s so many different routes you can go in aviation I’m just curious about your opinion or anyone else’s as well
Depending on your financial situation, 4 years in the military could be a good option. The Post 9/11 GI Bill can pay for your flight ratings at specific colleges, while also paying you a monthly housing allowance. If you're not interested in a 4-year degree to go with your flight training, there are other options to use the GI Bill for flight training but I don't believe it will cover the full cost of all the ratings. There are much faster options if you're willing and able to take on a lot of debt.
@@EnsignRo_ yeah I’ve hear the Gi bill doesn’t cover all of the costs but they will cover some but yeah I’m interested in going and getting a degree in IT and potentially working from home and then going to flight school so that I will have more time as well, there’s so many things that I’ve thought about but I’m just trying to get opinions on them as well but I have definitely thought about getting a degree and then working while I’m in flight school too and slowly get my ratings and stuff
try going through a Cadet Program that some of the majors have , the GI BILL can be very tricky with the flight schools. I would save ur GI Bill since you can only use it once
@@jd8184 It's been a few years since I've looked up options other than 4-year degrees for GI Bill funded flight training. When I last checked only certain flight schools were eligible and there was a yearly cap that would not even cover the cost of the Instrument Rating. 4-year programs at places like University of Alaska Anchorage will charge Instrument rating as a lab course. There is still a cap on how much the GI Bill will cover for each flight lab so if you require more than the standard syllabus you may need to pay some flight costs out of pocket. Also, You can get a restricted ATP with a 4-year degree.
I don’t think you understand how a 401(k) works lol. The airline is not putting money into your account AND matching. They are just matching what you put. Usually there’s some sort of max they will match up to. Rest is on you to put away.
when it comes to quality of life, finding the best corporate pilot job is the way to go. When it comes to money and longevity, its the legacy airlines.
@@derrick2251 my current job has me flying to Europe, Hawaii, Asia and domestic with at least a 5 day layover with 14 days off a month. I’ve been to Iceland and Greece with a 13 day layover so you’re getting paid while having a free vacation since lots of corporate jobs pay salary not hourly.

Im in year 9 this actually made me realise i NEED to be a pilot thats it i really like planes and controlling stuff + Traving thank u for telling us all why u need to be a pilot! 🎉🎉❤❤
Thank you for sharing our industry.😊
Thank you for the video! I am a brand new student pilot. I'm looking forward to the journey! I received some hopeful news from Southwest on their program. If not, I still have options prior to graduation
Thanks for reviving my childhood dreams that I gave up on.
Garrett’s favorite overnight in the regionals was Tri-cities!
I’m a commercial pilot building flight time! It’s tough but can’t wait till I’m at atp minimums
I have 60hrs and still feel that anxiety and nervousness before I fly. Does that go away eventually when you become experienced?
@@Adam-hx1gw yes, it does go away, but everyone is different. I recommend keeping your personal minimum’s high for a while until you feel more confident. Start flying with more experienced pilots that will help you adjust to lower personal minimums.
How are you building time? It’s difficult to get a job even with 500 hours
Great video Garret!
Please do a video on paths possible to take to become an airline pilot when funding is a problem. It has been my dream to fly commercial before I knew how to walk (alright exaggerating here) and I grew up watching Nat Geos Aircrash Investigation (yes cliche too). Garrett, I’m 44 and just signed up to ATP…will be starting next year in Feb. What are your thoughts on the fact that I’m older and trying to get hired by the airlines, do you think there’s a chance the airlines will hire someone older?
one could say they would be more willing to hire an older person than a younger person
@@ahmedfarah4094not true as it’s all experienced based.
You can be with an airline by 46 or so. And fly for 19 years between Part 121 regional and major. Then fly for a NetJets, or Flexjet, or other Part 135 operators into your 70s if you desire. All depends on ability to maintain medical.
I’m 17 and hope to be a pilot in the next few years, this helped a lot
Same but 19
Same 15 but my eyes are so shit i need to make sure i qualify for lasik 😭

Traveling and Seeing the world would bet biggest motivation in becoming a pilot, but honestly some of the close calls in the air from unruly passengers to problematic aircrafts would be my biggest concern.
Garrett, always super interesting videos! Thanks! 👊
Pilot Garrett, your posts are very wonderful. Thank you very much for your interview. I wish you a beautiful, sunny and successful week. Happy flight and safe landing of the plane ☀️🌊🏖️🏝️🛫🛬🧑✈️✈️

Have you spoken to my son before
Yes, please post more!
Great video! I have been in healthcare for the last 20 yrs but love to travel and fly. Last summer travel from Boston to Iceland. Absolutely love it! Wish i did not have to go to work at the hospital every day. Do you think it is too late to get a pilot license and start a new career?
Thank you
1. schedule flexibility
There is a lot of free time
2. Seat availability
You can go anywhere you want without having to worry about seat
3. Flexibility
You might not be able to get the flight that you want but here are also other alternative
4. Love of aviation

5. Pay
Pilots get good pay
6. Unique Experiences
You get to do things that any other job wouldn't allow.
15 days off is not much... but if thats paid time off and you can choose how many flights you take, that definitely tracks.
I'm thinking he meant paid time off- I'd imagine non paid days off are what he means with schedule flexibility

Thank you. I got my commercial license. But I need to get in the hours. Without working for an airline, you can’t get the hours. Catch 22. I wish I had joined a cadet scheme. Then at least all is covered. I spent £100,000. Minimum. But hopefully il get something soon. At present just business ventures with are ok
I just love listening to your voice ❤️
I’m 15 and looking to become a commercial pilot, what pathway should I take? Military? College? Flight school? Any tips would be greatly appreciated
Watching this instead of studying for my pilot test lol
Just recently started really thinking about becoming. pilot myself ive been studying to fly drones because I love the views but I dont think there is enough money in it.... now becoming a pilot might be something id want to try for a few years instead of working on a cruise ship.
Greetings & Happy Holidays. Thank you for these very informative videos. I'm curious, where did you go to school to learn to fly? Also, what pilot pipeline program did you select coming out of school?
I just got my CFI and feel like i’m just getting started. Takes forever to get the airlines. One day though.
Another awesome video. Thanks!

Love the video ! More like this please
I believe some do, but you need to be an employee first
This.
Like the trucking industry
@@EnsignRo_oh so you’re saying the gi bill mostly focuses on schools with 4year degrees?
Hey how are you and NYC doing? Is Bella with you (I hope). Take care and I look for new postings. Dave
Love your videos
I don’t think you understand how a 401(k) works lol. The airline is not putting money into your account AND matching. They are just matching what you put. Usually there’s some sort of max they will match up to. Rest is on you to put away.
Sounds great apv Bingo. NY.
when it comes to quality of life, finding the best corporate pilot job is the way to go. When it comes to money and longevity, its the legacy airlines.
Can you elaborate on why that is. Student pilot here confused on which route to take.

Hi Garrett! I was wondering what aircraft do u fly, and for what airline?
How do you even get started into becoming a pilot
thank you
How many years does it take to become an airline pilot just like you
Hi Garrett. Really enjoy the videos and behind the scenes of the Pilot life. Just a quick question. Are you required to have or get a passport to be hired by a Regional carrier, especially since you are only flying in the U.S.? Thanks and keep up the great work.
Those who don’t have rich parents, how did you pay for flight school, and how long did it take to get those funds? Did you take out a loan? And if so how quickly could you get out of debt?
Please do a video on how to get your certificates while working. Please!!! Love your videos
Whats pay like in the uk for narrow body FOs and captains and wide body FOs and captains
Maybe Australia is different, that could take years,I've never flown ever, that plane looks huge & Im bad at parking 😅
I might miss the landing oooppps 😮
Should I become an airline pilot at 37?
I am currently a healthcare provider, I make decent living. However, healthcare is not my calling. Growing up, i always dream of becoming an airline pilot. However, because of family and other things, i was not able to follow my dream. Well, now at 37, i am realizing if i should follow my dream. My wife stands behind me on this. I was just wondering if i am old.
I hope I will be a pilot when I grow up
Would love to be a pilot. Been my dream since I was a kid. I'm 28 now with a family and no disposable income or savings to even start to pay the enormous amount to even get my private's pilot license let alone all the steps past that to get the different ratings and certifications to go commercial. Do you have any advice for someone to get into this career being in a situation like mine?
Everything you mentioned is valubale and important. I really wanna know if now is still a good time to start an aviation career to become a pilot and find a job since we here about pilot shortage, so any thoughts about that? How long do you think that the shortage will last before the airlines resolve it?
Right now every estimate puts the shortage lasting 2-3 decades.
So you have plenty of time.

What about Cathay Pacific, ANA, singapore airlines and swiss air
Hey @flywithgarret, super quick question. I'm 23 starting my last year as a comp sci major in Colorado. Ever since I was a kid I've loved planes and wanted to become an airline pilot. For whatever reason though I just never pursued it. I've been thinking a lot about it lately and just want to know how long the whole process takes (starting with no experience to in the cockpit)? I still dream of flying so I'd love to become a pilot but I get so worried that its not worth it because I've already put 5+ years into this degree.
when you say days off.. is that annual? or monthly?
