Great video. I have been a pilot for 30 years, and an International Gulfstream Captain since 2012. My son is getting ready to head to ATP for flight training soon. I feel like the sooner he can get in the pipeline, the better. As much as I enjoy flying corporate, there's no denying that the airlines have some massive benefits, especially if you have the years to give. It's a great time to be a pilot.

I started about a month ago and I am about to transition to my TOL's eval and I and say that in a month with studying, already passing the PAR, and about 11 flights in, I am enjoying my progression a lot. It really depends on what you want your end goal to be. ATP advertises to its students that it has a fast track program to the airlines. A lot of that fast track progression is because of the self study that each student puts in and the constant flying that we have as well.
Although if you are interested in pursuing a career in aviation, I would do research first. Regardless of choosing ATP or a different flightschool, the cost of all of the training and progression towards the checkrides can be pricey. If you haven't already, I would go on a discovery flight with a local flight school to really get the feel of flying in one of their training aircraft to see if it is the right choice for you.

I'm in the UK and things are very different over here. Especially with budget carriers it can be very difficult to get a day off when you want one and the amount of seniority you have makes no difference whatsoever. The pay is a lot less than $100 an hour for FO - halve that figure and you'll be about right. There are no or negligible staff travel concessions unless you make it to the likes of BA.
I'm not trying to rain on your parade Garrett and I really enjoy your videos and I would agree that being an airline pilot has many plus points but I think it's important that guys this side of the pond go into the career with their eyes open. It's not until they are able to graduate to the likes of BA or Emirates that they will see terms and conditions approaching those in the USA that you mention.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill can pay for your flight ratings at specific colleges, while also paying you a monthly housing allowance. If you're not interested in a 4-year degree to go with your flight training, there are other options to use the GI Bill for flight training but I don't believe it will cover the full cost of all the ratings. When I last checked only certain flight schools were eligible and there was a yearly cap that would not even cover the cost of the Instrument Rating. 4-year programs at places like University of Alaska Anchorage will charge Instrument rating as a lab course. There is still a cap on how much the GI Bill will cover for each flight lab so if you require more than the standard syllabus you may need to pay some flight costs out of pocket. This video will mislead many people. He has not talked about the hurdles you have to jump. He sounds like a rich kid.
Pilot training is not cheap; many pilots spend most of their careers paying back debt. Some get scholarships.
You have to build hours to be hirable and most of the time building is at your expenses.
The schedules are not as great.
Become a pilot if you love aviation. I'm planning to start flight training soon but not for reasons in this video.
He is also lying about not other job allowing flexible schedules. I'm a software engineer and I plan when to go on leave.

@@Adam-hx1gw yes, it does go away, but everyone is different. I recommend keeping your personal minimum’s high for a while until you feel more confident. Start flying with more experienced pilots that will help you adjust to lower personal minimums.

I rather manipulate yoke/stick and throttles and enjoy the fun of flying and transporting people from one place to another, visiting new places and feeling like a boss moving such an awesome machine than to sit on a chair in a tower, watching screens of aircraft moving around and instructing each of them on what to do next. That's just me tho. The world needs ATC of course.

I love this! The only downfall is getting through flight training and the massive cost. With the profits all these airlines are making you would think they would start recruiting cadets and footing the bill of training until they can get the 1,500 TT flight hours. In turn candidates sign contracts binding them to time owed for x amount of years. Once this is done, I can almost guarantee, your shortage will diminish. Grab people off the streets and put them through training. All these airlines can afford to do so, I guantee it.

I’d honestly say don’t become an airline pilot. If you like flying, just get a PPL and your ratings. Airline flying can be fun, but it’s very automated. Not to mention, the cycle of the industry goes from high peaks to low valleys.. you never really have job security and you miss out on too much family time. There isn’t a career that could pay me more to miss that family time

It consistently ranks in the top 10 most stressful profession, usually at #3 behind active duty military and firefighter.
It does get very stressful and the lifestyle is stressful as well… and what’s frustrating is that many people don’t think so because they think the autopilot flies the plane and the pilots sit there and do nothing until something breaks (not true at all by the way)
But you get to fly a jet and once you go home, unless you have recurrent coming up you don’t have homework, you don’t bring work home with you. As someone who is studying for their first regional pilot job it’s 100% worth it.
