- There have been lot of Julio Rodriguez rookie cards released this year. Topps wants to make sure collectors of all ages and budgets can afford rookies, and there were a lot printed this year. In the long run however, not every Julio Rodriguez rookie card will have value. In this Video I break down the best Julio Rodriguez rookie cards to collect based off of print run, set, and overall collectability.

Thanks for sharing the google doc! That is awesome! I’ve used your calculations multiple times. There are just so many cards now-a-days. Your 1b and 1a cards are very interesting. I can see them having a lot of appeal. The problem still is, and you have covered it before, is how many RCs there are. It is too bad that RC isn’t narrowed down more. Great video though

Cool video! Recently picked up a bunch of raw Wander and JRods on COMC. No card more than $5. Many less than a buck. Fun time to be a collector. Cool shiny cards of promising players for cheap.

I’d like to sneak in the Topps Complete Sets Julio in there somewhere. Partly because it precedes his Topps Update flagship, and partly because it’s a bit more limited than it as well. Also, it’s in that nice vertical format unlike it’s other sister card, the Topps SP.
Great content, much appreciated. Assuming you weren’t including auto RCs in your list because the Topps Chrome Auto (navy blue jersey swinging) has to be pretty iconic being available only in #’d parallels including his on-card auto.
Agree with this one for sure, although I’m sad my favorite Julio, the black gold, won’t be as collectible as these lol

Great stuff Scott as always! My take, just buy more 2019 BC refractors :-p Actually I hate to the bone what Topps has done to this RC class in 2022. One thing you didnt mention (but maybe have in other videos) is that regardless of which card pulls out in front as "the hobby card to get for Julio" they are all going to have limited ceilings IMO because there are just so many options they all kind of cannibalize each other's ceiling. You see it now with 2018 Luka RCs in basketball. That being said, I will be trying to pick up one of the top 3 you listed but only because I already have some nice 2019 BC stuff ;-)
I'm totally a Topps Now addict haha I love getting those blue parallels numbered to just 49. They're short printed anyway, PLUS they celebrate and feature moments I witnessed in person AND you can get even more SP parallels.
Yeah I bought a Jacob DeGrom card topps now. It was when he had more RBIS as a hitter than runs allowed as a pitcher and was the only pitcher to do that since the moved the mound
I buy them, too. But they have very low resell value. I think part of the problem is the logo. The clock in the O of NOW looks cheesy. I think the cards will struggle to have timeless appeal because they don't have a timeless look to them. If they rebranded them, I think that could help. But ultimately, if it is something printed on demand, then it's hard to find a secondary market because the supply met the demand. And now you're hoping that somehow there will be a major increase in demand.
I got jrods 2019 bowman next auto blue its a pop 2! toppsnow is great the 2019 wanders n jrods pr's 1K, cant beat that and now they have parallels n autos too

@@JA-gj3qt disagree cards with iconic moments recognizable from the image do well overtime and each topps now has a description on back of that play or moment of the game, very collectable in years to come, Harpers nlcs hr card sold like wild fire people wanna look back n think i remember that exact moment

The Topps Update SSP with Ichiro is also super cool - some historical significance mixed in as well with a great image makes me think it will be highly sought after going forward

That to me is the most iconic rookie card for him. So tough to pull too I've been ripping update since release day and still haven't pulled a single ssp.
I think there are only like 300 of those as well. As a collector I am focusing only on short prints with low or no parallels. This one fits the bill nicely.

I just picked up the topps chrome Julio refractor in a PSA 10 last week. A Beautiful card. The price on most are already over $2k if you can find any. The logoman is a dream card as its just too rare to find, but i agree theyre 1A and 1B

Lot to unpack here, the prices for these SPs are disconnected from reality and print runs, with so many options it’s a crap shoot on what will sustain it’s value…

Cosmic Julio refractors might hold some value since hobby boxes have doubled in value. Also the nucleus, blue moon and interstellar refractors are first of its kinds in terms of Topps parallels.
What's your opinion on the Julio Bowman Chrome black and white mini diamond Refractor? I just picked one up recently, I'm considering adding it to my PC I've got the Bowman Best and Stadium Club too.
You know what I miss....my 1960 Yaz is a base with no parallel. So hard nowadays

Thank you for your thoughts on a player I am all over to try and collect. I did have a question about the Sapphire Edition Julio true RC vs. the Update Sapphire true rookie, why do they call both true rookies? Based on your video it seems like the more collectible one is the Julio Update Sapphire?
Some base may hold some value but pulling something numbered does help. No matter which set.
I figure I am like many, at this time, that have a small stack of base rookies, inserts and a couple variants.
Does the Logofractor info given here for Julio go for the Franco as well? I have one up on ebay for 325 and now I'm considering keeping it for grading. Thanks! Great vid btw!
Short answer is no. Franco cup was a "base" with the full run of colored parrallels. The short print image variation only RCs were Julio, Bobby, hunter green, CJ Abrams, and tork. Wander does have an image variation logofractor that only has the rose gold as well.
Where do you rank the home field advantage? I really like the look of the card and I think it’ll hold the value If not increase even more over time.
The Montgomery Club factory stamped Julio Rookie, is vastly underrated- similar in numbers to Tiffany print runs
I was going to mention this. I think Years from now the MC stamp will be unique. I think the Tiffany runs is a good comparison.

Those fall under the 17 paralleles and account for the two “image variations “ for the topps update. . About 3 min into the vid

I don’t really understand how the series 2 sp is hurt since it doesn’t share that image with any other cards. Why does that hurt instead of add to the uniqueness of the card?

Because there have been SO many versions, I went for the image variations this time. Unique, limited and SPs seem to always be in demand. The Update series SP and SSP were my buys.

Awesome video - totally agree with your rankings. I know some controversy over the update v regular sapphire, but I think you got it right. I find the image more appealing as well. I do take issue with the number of sets, and to some extent the logofractor (just not a fan of the set). But if Julio has this many cards, what about Wander?! Crazy to think how many different images he has.
Were you able to determine print runs for the Update SP and SSP?

We recently pulled a JRod rookie /25 from Bowman Chrome. Went to a customer in a break.

Just stay with the Toppps update flagship and you are golden! The high and quality stuff Way too expensive
I would love to see a comparison of how many total rookie cards JRod has across all brands vs. how many Ken Griffey Jr. had vs. how many someone like Hank Aaron had. I wouldn't be surprised if JRod has the most.
Also Soto because he wasn't in a ton of sets either didn't even have a Bowman chrome rookie card.
The Update SP Gatorade bath has to be up there. They really went overboard though way too many rookies we are looking at a huge Julio bubble. He is going to need to light it up something crazy.
While I can see that point.. I didn't put variations of any cards on this list or there would be a lot of confusion. These are all the base cards in a sense. Thanks for watching!

What's everyone's thought on his Xfractor auto from chrome update? I've pulled 3 not sure what to do with them.
IMO the Sapphire and logofractor (new product) is a stand alone comparison. A majority of the hobby can't afford Sapphire. For any player it will always be Bowman Chrome 1st, Topps Chrome and whatever base paper the market decides for me. The market makes this decision but we all will not agree on it. Good breakdown here Scottie. Mike Trouts paper Bowman rookie is a harder gem with the black border card stock but sells for less then chrome and this one I will never understand. His chrome is 38% gem rate with 1,281 PSA 10'S out of 3,401 graded VS Paper at a 6% gem rate with only 239 PSA 10'S out of 3,965 graded. Now when you mention this year's chrome QC issues, for sure we will not see this the same as my Trout head scratcher, so I can be on board with the premium price for Julio base chromes.

Personally think the update chrome will be the most popular but obviously not the most expensive do to production. What can actually help it is that do to QC issues PSA 10 versions of the card can potentially be more rare.
The rankings of value is definitely right but the rankings of collecability is going to be update image of the paper, chrome and sapphire. Reason is simple: Topps Update was such a great set to open that the image will bring back nostalgia for years to come. Chrome update was definitely a flop but Sapphire being cheaper than past years with the chase for on-card super rare autos makes the update image the collectable king.
What about bowman chrome sapphire? Isn't there gonna be a version in there?
What about 2022 donruss optic gold vinyl 1/1. Does that hold a big premium?
The problem is that scalper a-holes will sell packs etc with the 4 series 2 sp like it’s in each pack. Not a chance that it is.
