Great talk! Followed your work for some time to understand growth in plants and coral under water. Getting the correct spectrum penatrated into the water for growth and how much. We've also done a lot of work of the benefit of the benefit of uvc for fish, plant, coral health in aquariums. The exposure is a byproduct because the uvc is contained in a chamber, which basically elimates oxidation and adds electrical charge back that oxidation takes away.
It's it true our planets UVC is "life on earth" dangerously high and increasing exponentially as Dane Wiggingtons ex Nasa contractor scientist says on the latest Geoengin eering watch video?
@@SmedleyButler1 As far as I know there's no reason to be concerned, like at all. UV-C is also called vacuum-UV, or VUV in short, for a reason - it's already blocked due to absorption by a rather low amount of many gases, like air for example, and can only go far in a vacuum. So the chances that we'll ever see any substantial UV-C radiation down here without having way more severe problems to be concerned with, like no air to breathe, is pretty low if not absolut zero afaik. Might be a misunderstanding or just total nonsense. Maybe they were talking about higher altitudes or space, quite relevant for NASA stuff after all.
As an outdoor grower... This is objectively wrong. Sun grown sells good because it sounds good and hippies love it.. but led grown indoor weed is of a higher quality because it's clean and plants don't see much stress.

Gad...I invested in windows that have a high UV rating. I start my plants under a fluorescent light, then move them to a window that faces south. The plants don't do well in the window, and I didn't understand why. They grew well there before I got the new windows, also, when I transplanted the plants outside, they stopped growing and turned purple. Sunburn I guess....eventually they catch up but, now I know I was filtering UV...thanks.
When I read more of this topic. I discovered that it make plants more robust, less yield and quality increases. What about fertilizer do we need to change that too to get better efficiency?
You can pulse uv light and still get the same wanted secondary metabolites but without as much stunned growth as if you were to leave it on continuously. This way the uv can apparently penetrate further into the plant without the plant producing as much pigments at the surface which block most of the uv-radiation. Maybe cycle it at 1h on, 2 - 5h off. Don’t know about about fertiliser tho.

Hello! This was a very informative video, and I appreciate the spread of your knowledge. You mentioned that in your laboratory studies at the university, you had exposed the plants to a few seconds of UVC with burn, UVB a 1, 2, and 3 hours and experienced burns. You had also mentioned that finding the correct exposure can prove to be beneficial for the plant, have you attempted exposing the plant to UVC at 1/2 - 1/8 of a second at extended periods of time. Releasing the light photons in small concentrations throughout the day. Allowing the plant to experience UVC benefits without the worry of burn?

Hello i have an important question did not find any good answers maybe you could help me : Is a led photon different from a sun photon ? Is that so, does it impact the plant ?
The only difference is the sun at noon on a sunny day is 2000 micromols and with lighting its not economical to go over 900 without C02 or you will wast money on power.
does the aerethymal curve change as the plant "creates its own sunscreen" not that i know any of this stuff just thought if its protecting it, the might be able to withstand greater amounts over time and change the amount its able absorb?
I have a UV-A Lamp with 395nm wavelenght. It has only about 3 watts power, but when i put this light on the plant, i can see with my own eyes, that the plant adapts its leafs in about 5 to 10 seconds, with additional pigments! Instant sunscreen. The leafs get a litle reddish tint, in this uv light. The whole leaf. But this effect wears off, in darkness, as fast as it came. It is reproducible over and over again. I did not test it with a fresh picked leaf, and dont know, if the reddish tint comes from the leaf itself, or from the roots. Maybe a picked leaf is dead, i dont know.
Nearly 30 years ago, I could tell you that UV-B light increased cannabinol production. I’ve been waiting to watch this episode to explain HOW IT DOES THIS. What is the physiological pathway? You often use Cannabis as a test species so I had confidence that this video would explain that process. Your other videos always provided more depth, but you seem to have ignored it in this video. Please produce another video to explain it. I know there are many growers that have learned a great deal from your videos, and this topic is on their minds. Thanks for all of your work.
4:00 🤔 I remember being taught that photon's energy increases linearly with shortening of the wavelength. So for example 280nm would only have 2x the energy of 560 nm etc. But I guess that because of the really shallow penetration of 280nm the difference in released energy / active absorption volume (only the surface layer) is much higher than the difference in actual photon energy.
Has anybody been to the Afghan mountains or the equator to measure actual UV Photons, so that we can get a good idea of the Density of UV Photons that is required for healthy plant growth.
