Photosynthesis... the Rube-Goldberg machine of photochemistry. We can make food at ten to 100 times the efficiency of plant based photosynthesis by making solar hydrogen, first, and then synthesizing our way up the organic chain to simple sugars and proteins. Within 20-30 years we will be doing exactly that.
Thank you soooo much for the knowledge you share. I don’t have enough time or money to go to school for agricultural and you make it possible for me to know more than common knowledge on growing. Thank you sooo much Bruce.
I think there is a mistake on the efficiency of the blue light. As far as I know the lower the wavelength the efficiency decreases. until we get to 270 nm wavelength and the efficiency is at 2 percent. 460 nm wavelength depending on the source probably at 20 to 40 percent efficiency. Please feel free to correct me, if anyone has a higher efficiency LED chip on those wavelengths.
Thank you Prof Bugbee, I’ve watched many of your videos and your extensive knowledge is valued. I wish I had of paid more attention to chemistry and biology in high school, I wouldn’t have to learn it all again but this time it’s fun to watch and care for a seed from germination to harvest, no better feeling really.
It’s really just quite astonishing, and I absolutely take for granted the amount of knowledge available and the people that make it available. I’d like to echo Sect76 in appreciating the information Prof Bugbee shares with us. You are a great teacher and make these concepts much easier to understand. Thank you!
at 27:05 your graphic is wrong. You would put one acre of those solar panels on the roof and not on a field next to it. Plus, solar panels could power grows in locations that were impossible before.
Bravo simply the best lecture on photosynthesis i have seen. I have long been searching for the number of photons required to drive photosynthesis. Now, perhaps you could settle an argument for me. Is it better to have a high intensity light hanging higher above the plant canopy or have the same leds uniformly spaced lower to the plant canopy. If the fixtures are emanating the same number of mols/sec does it make a difference. I have always favored more distributed panels(assuming the umols delivered is sufficient for veg and or flower) was more efficient but someone challenged me on this the other day pointing out that a photon traveling 2 feet to strike the canopy is still equal to a photon that traveled 6 inches. I had always assume the inverse square law but he pointed out that the amount of light is diminished only because it is covering a larger area so the ppfd will be lower in a measured spot a greater distance from the source simply because it is spread over a greater area,
Hey Jim I've been thinking the same The lower lights Can pack more levels in, if working with levels Should be getting the same PAR, I'm guessing PAR readings is move volatile the closer you are, so depending on how tall your plants are Also a bit more difficult in getting light uniformaty This is my stab What do you think?
You should get Dr Bugbee and Dr Paul Stamets together, $80 million greenhouse grant - with a bunch of fun farm equipment and role similar to Mythbusters, but their job is to create the most efficient and highest yield symbiotic greenhouse garden for psychoactive substances like cannabis sativa plants and psilocyben fungi like banisteriopsis caapi vines and some 5-MEO toads creaking around. This should be built next to a beach.
This is extremely impressive and especially useful for large scale commercial grower and government planning! However, would the energy and economic comparison be over simple for the subset of (salad) growers for upscale restaurants in big cities. Taking into considering transportation costs (energy, lower delivered plant quality due to travel time, potential availability interruptions) and higher heat energy loss to have direct sunlight availability, what other vegetables and fruits might you consider economically viable for growing under artificial lighting. Same question might be applied for those inclined to grow salads non-commercially for home consumption.
@apogee instruments inc. so a low light input with the right light duration per day increases more yield vs a high input light with the same amount of duration per day, is that right? so 200w HPS is better than a 600w HPS if these light sources are balanced out correctly per day.. please correct me if i'm wrong, thank you.
Yes! good idea! I would like to know why quantum yield decreases as ppfd increases? What is the pratical implication of this trend? Growing plants in low light level is more efficient?
Hi Doctor Bruce thanks for making the video I found it very informative. I am currently producing medical grade Cannabis and am making some major decisions on using LEDS as our indoor light source. Do you have any preference in regards to brands of commercial grade led lighting and can I possible use your video on my website?
Chris Craig Productions check out h.l.g. Or chilled maby nextlight. fluence. spectrum king and I pray it’s for supplemental in a light deprivation green house
So with 0.4 g/mole for photosynthesis, and the 2.8 mole/MJ of modern LEDs, we would expect a yield of: 0.4g/mol*2.8umol/J = 1.12 g per MJ of electrical energy Or 4 grams of carbohydrate per kWh on your utility bill. This is more than $10 a pound in just energy costs, which would be a completely impossible price for tomatoes! Luckily though lettuce and tomatoes are 95-96% water, so it turns out the energy cost per pound of product is much lower than that. But we certainly won't be growing cane sugar (currently at $0.14/lb) indoors any time soon!
I’m at 19:15 in the video and what I’m understanding is; more light= more yield. Right???? Of course understanding it’s going to consume more water and food.
No, that's generally not true. Most plants are actually happier at lower illumination levels than sunlight. The optimum growth for many large leaf plants will be probably closer to a fraction of one sun, which is the reason why one can get amazing yield improvements per area with vertical greenhouses and even moving tray systems that expose each plant only for a fraction of a day.
I've been curious about photosynthesis for a while now, it's such an interesting and fascinating process that if it were possible for a human or animal to do it I wonder how different the world would be. I mean macro many celled animals too, not micro organisms.
