    Hi Devon, Thank you so much for the tutorial. This Helps me A LOT. I used to only EQ with my ears and eyes but without any theory, I'm really excited to try this out rn.
    The only question that is left for me is in the 90hz below range. You've talked about how it could affect your vocal and that Room tones and the Low end rumble lie in that rnage.
    My Question is which specific upsides this range brings. Maybe not for Vocals but for other Instruments like basses.
    Thank you very much and greetings out of Germany.

      Your kick usually hits around 60hz. Below that are also your sub frequencies. You can feel those in your body if you have a sub or big speakers.

    • @mmanimosity
      @mmanimosity 4 роки тому +8

      The upside the lower range brings (90hz) is it makes your bass and kicks sound fuller and punchy as well.

    Devvon, I am a 70 year old rhythm guitarist in a band and songwriter with a very nice home studio. For years I have been concerned with the levels of each channel in relation to the others. EQ has always been a struggle, which was most often overlooked.
    This tutorial has given me the basics to go back to previously recorded band and solo projects and enhance, not just balance the sound.
    Thank you, You can teach an old dog new tricks!

    I work as a live engineer and this a great introduction to eq. If you guys want to get better grab a eq ear training or frequency training app. This will help more than any eq tutorial. Once you know what 100hz, 200hz 400hz and so on sounds like, you will hear all those build ups of frequencies and know what to cut and not to cut or what to boost if something lacks. Eq and leveling is 90% of mixing, the rest is just colour and dynamics control. One last tip always eq with all tracks playing otherwise you might cut too much or wont need to cut at all even if there is a problem with the vocals.

    Great video. It takes patience to sit through a 20 minute video when the concepts are completely new, but this was extremely helpful. My biggest takeaway was breaking up the EQ on a scale: low, low-mids, mids, high mids, high (and assigning hertz to each band and understanding impact of a cut or boost for each). The biggest challenge is understanding the vocabulary and application. Thanks!

    I've been producing music for years and already understood the concepts presented here. However, your process is what I truly found helpful. Your method of first sitting back and listening to the track in context, making up your mind about what it needs, then addressing each band one-by-one, with those initial observations in mind, really makes eq'ing a much more intuitive task. One of the best EQ demonstrations I've come across. Bravo!

  • @Raw_id
    @Raw_id Рік тому

    Devvon! Thanks again for another articulate explanation on EQ'ing. Your approach of exaggerating each frequency then bringing back in line is a technique i've used for a long time so great to see i'm not the only one with this train of thought. As this helps you feel what sound good and it allows you to focus on what sounds good as opposed to being rigid and saying, I have to do a 2db cut or a 5 db cut. It's all about feel and sound. I salute you Brotha man.

    I've been trying to find a video like this for a couple days and this makes so much more sense than any other video I've watched. every other video I've watched, they get too technical and it seems like theyre speaking in a different language lol but this video was very helpful. thank you!!

    🎧 8:22 Some digital recordings sound "thin" compared to analog recordings that have more warmth, esp in the lows/low mids. These new school EQ "rules" I feel is why most amateur engineers automatically cut out the warmth without fully knowing what they're doing. Just my opinion tho...all i know is that I prefer a mix between the analog warmth, and the digital brightness. DOPE VIDEO!!!🔥

    Hi Devvon. I thought your video was fantastic. The technical content was right on the money. As some of the other commentators have mentioned, there are a lot of videos that 'explain' eqing but you come away not necessarily understanding what this is buying you, why or how. I think your presentation style is spot on. In fact, for me, you could not be more engaging. I found myself listening to a wonderfully clear and confident orator. Someone that was speaking to me in a conversational but educational tone and manner. Just to let you know, I'm from the UK, don't hold it against me, I had no choice in the matter 😉and I'm also in my 50s. So, I guess you can imagine, I've heard a lot of educators and speakers during my life and you, my friend, are without doubt in my top 5. Thanks for the great video and the great content. I hope that you and yours are well and keeping safe during these awful times. All the very best. Cheers. Dave
