How do you run so many plug ins without pro tools crashing? What computer do you use? I use a macbook pro 2015 with 16gb of ram and i7. I have max buffer size and external ssd and would never be able to run that many plug ins. If you could help I would appreciate it so much! I run my own recording studio and I always feel limited by how many plug ins I can use.
I dig how you're always animated and energetic in your breakdowns of your processes and explanations. It helps clarify things that would be kind of difficult to understand otherwise. We need you out there. Keep up the awesome work big brotha.!!!
I used to follow you really closely when I was 16, like 6 years ago. Was new to music in general and your stuff helped me through some tough times, staying excited about the world. Fast forward to now, I'm 22 and never in a million years imagined I'd be making ym own music, but I'm here now. Imagine my surprise to see that you have your own established channel as you work to build yourself up as a musician!! I can't express how amazing and inspiring finding this was for me today. Your music was always an inspiration in the past, and now as a novice making music I feel lost. But seeing how committed you are means more to me than anything on the beginning of this journey. Thank you so, so much brother🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽. Keep on going!
Great job explaining this bro. That r vox is indeed a gem for presence. I actually used it for a kick just something subtle to help the kick push through before I started mixing.🔥🔥🔥
This video opened my eyes... I learned too much compression was a big no no but what should really matter is the final product, there are so many different ways to approach a vocal and seeing someone use three compressors on just one vocal is eye opening.. In college, NOBODY will tell you to use more than one compressor, two is almost a taboo and this is what they teach in school...
Devvon....I want to say a huge THANK YOU for doing all these amazing educational videos!! I recently purchased a new home studio and am literally sitting here with pen and pad TAKING NOTES like I'm in a college classroom! You are dropping GEMS in every video! By the time I'm done watching all your videos I'll probably have an entire folder full of notes haha! THANK YOU! Are your plugin packages available for Adobe Audition?
This has been the most helpful compression video ive ever watched!!!!! wow this is awesome! Im taking notes. !st compressor reduces dynamic range. Second compressor adds color and character. And that third compressor is the GLUE! I love that glue!
Wow this helped me big time. Especially with rnb type vocals in my opinion. Especially with the CLA compressor. How u could keep the dynamics a good amount with the attack and release and still good a good volume.
I used the cla76 as the third comp. I just like the way it colors musical transients. And the first I used the rcomp to tame the sound. Sounded super sick. Thanks for the vid
Speaking of a Compressors tone; Im amazed at the difference between the VCA's, FET's, Opto & Digital Logic Compressors that are so doggone district from one another. (Once again in Logic Pro) The use of Soft Distortion on Drums is been a life saver on the tracks that ive been making. How is it that these Compressors sound so incredibly different from one another with some basically trashing the sound. Noticing that out of the 7 Types of Logic Compressors there is usually one thats the proper tone for the drums. It must have really been expensive back when in analog, if different colours & compressor tones varied so much as in Logic's representation of them if they aren't simply exaggerated their tones?
Devon, your teaching makes me wanna be a teacher one day, I followed every process and guess what it came out even better....I've been struggling a lot with this and now I just wanna re-do all my mixing in my computer THANKS SO MUCH🤜🤛
bro, thank you... fr fr, i have learned SO MUCH from you N i just wanna say how grateful i am to get access to this information and techniques. really appreciate u man, i wont forget you when i get where im going n people wanna ask me where my skillset came from...YOU bro. thanks again. (i have watched all of your videos WAYYY more than 1 time...pshhh, probably more than 10 times each video, n i keep coming back to solidify the skills.)
That’s a great question, I would even ask in a general sense. Do you process background vocals/ad-libs, the same as lead ones ? In terms of : EQing, Compressing, De-Essing...
@@obryanmiezan8192 I process mine different from the lead. I take out more on the low-end when EQing my backs and most times on my libs to allow my lead to be more centered
@@lilkenny83 Would only make sense to take out the lows I guess ? Since they fulfill a different function in the entire track. But I meant in more as, apart from EQing differently, background vocals are still undergoing that : cleaning frequencies, leveling, controlling dynamics, adding colors etc... Or do you do less ? If you’ve watched his videos about obtaining a ‘ X artist ‘ vocal sound, you’ll see Devvon have a specific pattern for mixing vocals
@@obryanmiezan8192 from the videos I've watched and veteran engineers I communicate with, the chain is more than not generally the same, if that's what you mean

Please do a video how to do it and different ways to do it. Can you make the video long too because I feel like a lot of people want to know this too. Thankyou!🙏🏾
Great videos, I’ve learned so much from you, thank you. After you do this serial compression, do you put a limiter at the end of your vocal chain? Thank you!
would love to see the process after your three compressors. I feel like what I struggle with the most is knowing what to do with the vocal after the third compressor / added saturation.
Great video Devvon!! Thank you for taking your time to do them. I have one doubt about your technique, should you use the 3 compressors always sequentially or it depends? Also, do you do subtractive and or additive eq before those 3 compressors? Thanks for your wisdom!
Great Video aggain and thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. You have a nice feeling for explaining things :) Easy to understand and so helpful overall. 😉😉😉

I agree, out of all the videos I watch Devvon explains things very well and also doesn't make them sound boring
Takes intelligence to explain complex ideas in a simple way. So many tutorials just brush over the process. Thanks!
Indeed

Those adlibs are jus so clean !
Best tutorial I've ever seen on UA-cam about compressors. Much love from Burundi 🇧🇮

the way u teach with your hand gestures is great lol salute

Dude thats dope
Still trying to learn compression. I don't really understand it even after several tutorials. Imma stick with it tho
I remember commenting on one of Devon's first two or three videos. Congrats on breaking 100K!

I recommend printing it in increments, or committing the tracks that you’re happy with
should i still be adding 3 compressors like this if my interface has a built in 1176 style compressor? 🤔 this content is too helpful!

I alwayss run Waves Vocal Rider on a track before I do any compression. It takes some of the strain off the compressor.
So where does using a multi band compressor slide in this chain?
Thanks man! Awesome and helpful video!

one question how would i achieve that if i have only two types of compressors available in my DAW
I reference these videos so frequently I wish he had a blog or website or some sort of cheatsheet I could reference 👀
hey man great video, can u make a video about the best free reverbs and compressers that works for windows and it works on tracktion waveform
This was fantastic! Thanks for this.
Is this only for R&b music can I use this technique on rap music
When do I use certain compressors? Aside from when I want to that is.
Great video Devvon!! Thank you for taking your time to do them. I have one doubt about your technique, should you use the 3 compressors always sequentially or it depends? Also, do you do subtractive and or additive eq before those 3 compressors? Thanks for your wisdom!
One thing im not sure is...are you putting these compressors in the same vocal insert or in separate inserts?
And where should a Multiband Compressor be placed in the Vocal chain?
Seriously i wouldn't use it, instead of it an EQ, cause its doing almost the same and Sound the same
You helped me, Devvon. Thanks so much!!
@helpmedevvon Could you do a video showing why and how you TRIM your TRACKING VOX and how you remove the breaths?
