Builds symmetrical thing without mirror mode
To be fair thats kinda normal for an engineer, "Oh look shiny new tool"... 5 seconds later forgotten about it and back to his old stuff....
Absolute normal phenomena.
to be fair, the mirror didn't work.
There were so many sails on that boat it caught so much wind it was practically a kite
I was screaming inside the entire time LMAO.
Thanks, I just spat my coffee all over the dog.
Seems like a job well done to me :D

y'see, the main issue with your sailboat is that it's more SAIL than BOAT.
Sailboats Inc. ‘How many sails would Sir like?’ RCE ‘All?’ ‘Of course Sir, of course.’
Wanted to like but didn't want to kill your 69
Ok, I hope you see this but I used to sail and basically the triangular sails are the better ones because they can get you upwind and downwind by just rotating them. You can't get directly upwind, that would be impossible, but you can zigzag with a certain angle relatively to the wind, usually on modern sailboats that angle is between 30 and 45 degrees. In that case the sails are almost parallel to the hull. If you are going downwind the thing you want to do is to set the sails perpendicular to the hull. In general you would want to have your sails always perpendicular to the hull when going downwind, and when going upwind to have them to a certain degree to the wind direction. In that case you'll get the maximum speed. The other problem is the fact that the ship leans when going upwind (reason why initially you couldn't get the ship upwards), so you need the bulb (the weight under the hull), but also you need to remove some sails because otherwise the ratio is imbalanced.
anyway I hope to see you experiment again with sails :D
p.s. sorry for bad English, I'm Italian lol
This comment needs more likes!
So upwind is into the wind correct?
@@baseballjustin5 almost, basically if you draw an arrow on the paper imagine it being the wind direction, if you tried going directly into the wind your sails would act like a flag, but if you try to go slightly to the left or to the right, the sails start to work like a wing, that is called upwind. You can test this concept when you're going in a car, with the windows down, put your hand outside and point the fingers to the car direction, with your thumb pointing up. try to point your fingers slightly to the right and the hand will start to be pushed to the right and a little to the front of the car
@@leonardoperina4036 ok just making sure I and RCE have an idea what you mean lol
@@baseballjustin5 lol yeah makes sense haha
Hopefully you see this. But you should add sails so they go from left to right of ship, like the triangle ones that hang over side, and put them on rotors. That way you can make them turn properly against the wind.
I should mention I have the game through gamepass, but this is where I learned of the dlc which I can't afford. But it seems to use real world physics on the sails and wind. If I can eventually try this out, I could get a better idea on a ship. Maybe even give you a good design. I've made some great ones for the story.
Exactly when i was waiting for the vid it came up
Strongest shape-shaped boat having problems navigating caves. What an irony
Haha yes
i blame the pole
The strongest ship?
Sees Charybdis, the immortal daughter of Poseidon, who was cursed by Zeus to become a horrifying sea monster
“Oh no a whirl pool”
i wonder how many people thought of Charybdis when they saw that it is definitely inspired by it
I was thinking it's a sea sarlacc pit
@@gamingwizard3296 I definitely did, was scrolling the comments to find someone who knew it too
That the devs included a Sarlacc pit amuses me to no end. That dangly bit you created is a "fin keel", and for not knowing anything about sailboats, you pretty much nailed the placement (and intent) of your counterweight!
Not a sarlacc pit lol, it's an ancient Greek mythological beast, I believe it's in the odessy, don't recall the name however
@@magicstew45 Yes, but most don't catch references to Charybdis and Scylla.. but they do know sarlaac (which I believe was also a reference back to the aforementioned beasts lol)
@@Haladmer ah yup, you obviously are aware of what you're talking about. I apologize for assuming otherwise.
@@magicstew45 no worries. I could have phrased my original comment better for those who DID know the references from either direction. But I was being lazy, so fault is still on me for that lol
Besides I'm not an architect, I don't worry about appearances :D (sorry, had to throw that in on a RCE comment section lol)
As a mechanical engineer, this is too funny and painful at the same time 🤣 i love it
As a civil engineer I thought you'd say that!
As a software engineer I'm 100% fine with it 🙃
As a mechanical engineering student, i cannot even comprehend his skill
@@RealCivilEngineerGaming As a life long sailor, systems engineer and brother of someone who is studying boat building I'm on the mechanic's side.
" Why is the sea so slopey? "
That's my favorite expression!
the weights aren't the issue.
On sail boats you use a fin downwards, witch gives the stabilisation so the wind doesn't blow you over
Boats need ballast once they get to a decent size, my motor cruiser is 12 tons empty plus about 4 tons of ballast in the bilge to keep it stable, sail boats usually have a weighted keel that hangs under the hull.
@@popuptoaster Although its true ballast is normally necessary (depending on the boat design), that wasn't his issue. It was the wind, as shown by the flipping while the boat wasn't even in the water.
@@Geerice What he needs is to start without sails, make a solid weighted raft essentially. Add sails accordingly but also a rudder. Ugh I forgot that on my comment.
16:00 on real sailing ships of that type (if you could call this a type lol) the ballast usually weighs TONS.
„Navigating through tight caves is a bit more difficult“
-RCE, sailing a Knob-shaped boat.
Ancient Egyptians could build sailboats, I wonder how well this modern day professional does!
I think he'd rather build a bridge over the water than build a boat
@@Shermantankgodtier and thank god for that, that boat was just horrendous. (No offense to sir engineer)
You need to make the crows nest mast shorter the boat ran away perfectly with no giant mast. Then you added it and you kept tipping. The longer the mast the greater the moment of inertia. You know this Matt!
RCE: Square sails should have the flat parts face the bow (front) and stern (back) of the ship. the triangle sails have the flat parts facing the sides. Square sails are more efficient for running with the wind (wind behind you) through about 120 degrees (60 either side). Triangle sails are more efficient when the wind is within 120 degrees either side of your bow. You should be able to pivot the yardarms (on a square rig) or boom (fore and aft/triangle) rig to be able to have the face of the sail roughly perpendicular to the wind. Remember, air is heavy, you had way too many sails, and the amount of weight pushing your ship over far outweighed the counterbalance you had with the keel. You can reduce the length of the keel by making a wing or bulb keel, where you make the 'fin' shorter, then place the weights perpendicular to the fin.
Has a lot of sails in strong wind
“Why am I tipping?”
As a sailing yacht designer I cried at your boat design 😂
3:30 interesting concept for a tractor beam
RCE made me buy so many games
Steam itself should sponsor him
@steam
The only problem is…. no one really owns steam see?
You need a free rotating servo so the sails can move to a certain angle and the dagger board has to be like a plane wing so the current goes over and under the wing like shape
The amount of sails added so much side draft which Is why it tipped, adding a keel was accurate just there wasn't enough weight on it.
All in all quite an efficient boat and ideas that any architect wouldn't even think of
put weights on the entire bottom. Also widen and lengthen the ship a bit, adding more surface for bottom weights. If you have too, double stack but shouldn't need much more than that. Also start without masts. Make a solid ship "raft" first.
You have to put the steering element where the propulsion is. When underwater you can do it with a paddle (like on inboards) or by moving the propulsion itself (like on outboards). When the propulsion is outside the water you have to move the propulsion itself (like on hovercrafts). However the latter wont handle as well. Kind regards, someone with a motorboat license😂
He called the tiny waves 'huge', and yet he hasn't even seen the absolute tsunamis out where the wind is no longer shown
Love RCE so much I watched the whole add!! I love the funny wedding photo and the hard hat at the wedding 😂😂
Thanks for uploading trailmakers video . After a long day of work finally something good to ease and enjoy ...
I think the issue is the floating/buoyant blocks you've used to build with in the beginning. The whole ship is too buoyant causing it to pop up like a balloon.
In a sail boat you adjust the sails depending the way you're facing the wind ( so you need a hinge that permits you to rotate the sails on themselves)
I will try to explain you the rough idea:
if you're facing directly the wind you wont have any "thrust"
if you're close to facing directly the wind you need the sails to be straight down the ship like 10°,
if the wind blows from the side of the ship you need to have the sails more like 45°
if the wind comes from behind (thats what she says) you need the sails to be 90°
you can found out more searching: sailing boat orientation in relation to wind direction
actually, some small sail boats have a long ish bit at the bottom that you slide in, but it doesn't have to do with wait
“Oh look, they’ve added mirror mode!”
*doesn’t use it*
He is using it at 12:05
Oh I didn’t make it that far before my work break was over. He still didn’t use it in the beginning of the episode
@@redfally4 yeah it's was funny lol

NAVAL ENGINEERS PREVAIL!!!!!11oneone
Enjoy your campaign playthroughs like infra and some of what you've done with trailmakers. I would love to see more of that
As a sailor, this was utterly painful to watch 🤣
The hull blocks, the outboard boat motors, the crow seat and the sails are new
17:40 This made cry and day at the same time🤣👍.
Thank RCE for the video.
Dont use the bouyant Blocks to build down so that doesn't want to go up
And make the sails catch the Wind from behind so thats pushes you instead of pushing you over
Scrapman completing high seas is Real Civil Engineer's signal to start high seas.
The map is shaped weirdly 7:19
That sailboat is the most architect thing I've seen you make.
Finally this is the video that i waited and needed.
I feel there was a missed opportunity for a front tractor beam going into that cave 6:20
Just got home from work and see a video awesome.😁
Hope you had a good vacation Matt!
You kinda invented daggerboards from first principles. That’s pretty cool.
Irl the ones on small boats aren’t weighted, but maybe they are on big boats, idk.
Yeah bigger sail boats like 20ft ones for example had some sort of weight at the bottom of it, what RCE did was very close to what they would normally be, I think he just had trouble because there were too many sails.
@@mrcheeese6271 interesting! I've only ever been on the single and double person ones, so I guess they just don't need a weight :)
And yeah, this is one of the rare situations where more propulsion isn't a good thing :p
@@TTIOttio yeah, the one or two person boats use the captain and crews weight to counter act the sail instead. I sail a laser mainly but my dad has a cabin boat that we use every now and then. I love meeting new people who also sail because I don’t know that many who do.
Your ship leans over because you have sails that run parallel to the plane (length) of the ship, thus causing the sails to catch the wind and push the ship perpendicular to the path of travel and lean to its side.
hey civil u should start playing infra space more often. Its one of my favorites
The sails need to be at the right angle as the wind only effects the sales in the direction their facing do if you added a sail on a rotating survow it might work??
I think the reason why the sub dog flips over is because the wheels surely have some buoyancy
He says the other side of the country like you can't drive across the UK in a few hours lmao
For someone who isn't a marine engineer, you actually did great on the sail boat. I've done some sailing, and modern sail boats don't really work the way you expect!
And now I'm gonna go home and buy the dlc. Ya boy is pumped. The campaign was so fun.
It seems like you independently invented the keel for yourself, which in itself is impressive
More trailmakers! Sooooo many bridges to build!
Please :)
Really enjoy this game
You should just add two engines at the back and use a fin or something to steer because the boat has horrible steering because it has to constantly change the direction of motion.
I just love Snakedog!
I think you should to stabilize that... Thing like adding some arms to the sides that stabilize that
Taking the term "boat" to a whole new level.
A basement level that is.
We want more please Matt!
5:47 I've been summoned.
Keeling it lol I think the winds knocking you
Hi Motorway Matt! Not sure if you've seen it or not, but there's a new Daily Challenge on Mini Motorways that just came up that I'd love to see you try. *It involves Motorways.*
Not me trying to get you back to playing my favorite game or anything. 😉 Haha.
have you ever heard of the game from the depths? it's a bit in depth but the ship building is pretty incredible
good job finding Charybdis
Who knew the strongest shape would do so well in wet areas
Our man got to meet Charybdis, nice!
Please, re-visit the "Build-a-Boat Workshop" again soon!
If I may be so bold as to suggest a 'Vee' hull? A very weighted knife edge, curving out of the water at the Bow and Stern (haha boatwords), then enough 'boyant blocks' to float it, in a Boaty kinda shape. (with crows nest for Land Ho'ing or late nite star gazing). Imagine a Hockey Player's skate blade, minus the skate n plastic bits, add boyant boaty bits. :) cheers
Yaaaayyyy trailmakers!!!!
The first boat is nob RCE ...... cheeky ....... KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK =]
being a boater myself if you were on that Crowsnest you would get extreme whip-lash, and you would break every single one of your spinal and neck bones😄
You desinged this ship like the Vasa wich was a masterpiece of architecture
You should make a boat plane!
Please do more Trailmakers content
Being a sailer and having a Some what understanding of sail craft I laughed my ass of. But to be honest you were going in the right direction with the thingemezib underneath the boat. But maybe a bit to kenau sails? Just a maybe😂 But lovely video go in with creating content
This was a Kraken good episode!
Did not expect to see Charybdis in this video.
Psychiatrist: Bald RCE doesn't exist, he can't hurt you.
Bald RCE:
This DLC seems more than a little bit inspired by Make Sail from Popcannibal. Trailmakers is definitely easier to make a ship in, but Make Sail is so much better on physics.
6:15 I guess you could say Matt went balls deep in the cave.
Make a Sail Flyer next!
RCE, try to make a realistic sail boat (pretty much what you made but less sails)
Will there be another Infra video? Im enjoying that series

I love how they have Charybdis in this dlc
i would recommend you to watch some youtube videos about the high seas DLC. i would advise scrapmans high seas playlist
Captain Matt on the Sea of Ree's!
So good. Just like a real boat...nearly.
17:30 Matt found a Sarlacc
as someone who has a fair bit of knowledge about sail boats i was drunkly screaming at the screen what you were doing wrong, then i sobered up and remembered you're civil engineer which means boat building isn't in your job description. Keep on sailing (maybe with a few less sails).
Sub dog would be a lot more stable if you had just two permanent floats in the center on top.
Make that boat BREAK THE SOUND BARRIER !!!
