- Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am looking into the workshop for sailboats to see what people are doing with sails, and if sailboats can actually be made to function better than what I've been able to do so far! Turns out YES, but also no.

Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

If the sails are in any way accurate with reality in trailmakers, a good sailboat should weigh around 1.5-3 tons (small and medium sized sailboats) and the best wind for sailing is around 30km/h.
In conditions of higher wind speed, only the larger sailboats sail or if smaller, they're not on the full sail span.

*You are now one with the wind*
Sailboats move fastest when they travel perpendicular to the wind, and a well designed sailboat can travel faster than the wind this way. This is true in real life and in trailmakers. The trick is transferring the perpendicular force of the wind into forward motion by properly angling the sails and not tipping over. In trailmakers this is much easier to accomplish with wide outriggers and lots of shallow fins under the water rather than a deep keel and weight blocks. I was able to build a 0-core sailboat that can travel 50mph perpendicular to the 32mph wind with this method.

5:00 heyy I'm in this video! I wrote all the controls in the description, if you angle the sails correctly you can go 45° in the wind without power.

the sailing boat at 0:40 is only meant for regions with little wind. Its mainly built for maps without wind at all, thats also why its powered with engines :)
A Multiplayer Monday battleship battle would be cool in the high seas’ waves
Are we talking ship warfare? Or are we talking build a tall wall play a classic game of battleship?
@@-user_redacted- I was thinking the ship warfare option would be better, if it was the classic wall battleship then there would be no point in doing it in the high seas map

how is the compass helpful?
@@Micchhael you can use it for assisted steering that keeps the vehicle always pointed in one cardinal direction, and it cannot naturally rotate on its own
You Can also use it for stabilised gun turrets which i use it a lot for

You need to lower the sails right when they go slack, and then put them up when they are fully swung into position. That maintains your forward momentum.
That is definitely true, you can really mess up and lose a lot of momentum if you do not do that

When sailboats go faster than wind they angle the sails so they form a wing and lift force is generated in the direction the boat is moving. That’s why moving directly into the wind is not the fastest way to move.

Yeah but air pressure/lift is not simulated in the game. Well, it's simulated for plane wings, but i don't think it is for sails.
This is kinda hard to explain but as a person who sails sailboats I can tell you that sailing with the wind is not the fastest
It’s kinda like how a propeller makes a plane go forward
I've been on a sail boat once... It was terrifying. The boat was at like a 45° angle to the water and i was just mostly worried about dropping my phone. Then on our way back I got stuck in the bathroom because the door was jammed. I managed to get out but it was weird being able to feel the rock of the boat.
They're fun though, aren't they?
Multiplayer Monday suggestion:
Trailmakers Dethrone using Workshop creations that are hidden or randomly selected for each person.
Explanation:
I have 5 land vehicles on the Workshop that are all "boxed" to look identical except for a number. You could have everyone choose a box one at a time or have them randomly assigned to each person.
You could also do this by each selecting a creation, boxing it and then having at least 2 people shuffle the boxes so that no one knows which is which

From what I can tell a wider sail boat is a lot better than a heavy counter weight at least for flipping over I think the best Sali boat would have a wide base lager not taller sails and a cool red and black paint job.

well the high sea expansion costs extra, which is why I didn't get it
It’s weird trail makers made dlc with wind and ocean but sails aren’t something they were focused on making work.
I've made a few thruster assisted hydrofoils in Trailmakers, doesn't use sails though. My best one goes 60 km/h normally and about 300 km/h when "hydrofoiling".

Well you just discovered the Compass, now you gotta think of a way to use that thing in a cool functional way (because I coundn't)
I do a setup like you would for angle sensors in automatic roll, but adjust it with servos and use the output for automatic steering.

@@metalburger1117 Like keeping from accedently turning while driving a boat in the wind, you'll drift to the side from it, but wont to/away from the maw.

I think you should have given the first boat a longer chance. It was tiny, but it seemed to be pretty good, and you switched off of it before actually giving it a proper chance.

I built my first sail boat and I think it works great! It looks amazing and has a pirate ship astatic, it works side ways to the wind and goes 45 KPH just with sails

The Coast Guard in the US uses a ship that can roll completely and self right. Would be cool to see his built in SM

Coming back to this video, i have to say that the vortex was the most prominent issue with 'BLISS Super Sail Yacht'.
I used to want you to make another larger dragon but now I think you should make a blimp-airship-thing with a balloon made of sails and sails for steering on the side like in many steampunk airships
If you have too many sails and not enough keel, youll flip over (only for single haul). If your sails are large you need to compensate for a large or larger keel.

In a storm like that one where you were at the start the old sailboats just take down the sails and wait for the storm to stol.That is why you weren't able to sail the boats in there
have you tried dropping the sails when you tack (and putting them back up when you're in position), i think thats how you do it irl
you dont drop sails irl but in game it could work.

the wind physics are actually pretty accurate. its just difficult to make a sailboat cause very few people actually understand the physics of sailing. if you think that directly downwind is the fastest point of sail, then you should probably do a little research and save some time troubleshooting.
If I could do some online high seas mode, I’d try to make a tourist sub/boat with people being able to go in the boat being able to see through the glass and then we’ll, ya

I've been sailing as a representative of the Australian navy cadets in small corsair types even solo sailing try a run have the jib (front sail) all the way to the left) and the main sail all the way to the right with the wind directly behind one of the fastest ways to sail

I feel like sailing is difficult in trailmakers because there is no physical feedback that you would get from the lines on an actual sailboat. (I sail lasers myself, which if you don’t know what that is, it’s the men’s Olympic single hander.)

45 degree Angle of Attack is the number. It has something to do with creating pressure difference due to curved surface (lift, coanda effect) of the sail interacting with the wind
You taking flight for a moment in that one boat had me wondering if it's possible to make a glider out of sails.
You should make or look at a MASSIVE ship. Like a giant Cruise ship or a giant ship kinda built for high seas
To anybody that doesn’t know sailboats going into the wind will send you into irons and you will stop having momentum and start slowly going backwards

Where hes failing at is the fact the sails are used to catch different angles of wind, the keel is used to keep the boat balanced (youll need a keel long and wide typically starting 70% to 40% of the hull. And the rudder is used for directional change.
I think that the black boat at 4:00 tries to have the sails so it doesn't tip you over wile you are suposed to tip them back a vit so a litle of pusing power is ofered.

Maybe try the sails out farther out at sea, with the giant waves. More wind = more speed

My sailboat maintains balance by hiking the character over the side. I can sail into the wind with just sails. Have only done one successful tack. It always stalls and then I have to backup and turn to complete the tack.

What kind of unique and stable community creations for flying in the Sea update?
Could you try tacking by using two sails, one for when the wind is on the right and another for the left? So as you tack you collapse one sail (should prevent the reversing)

They only do anything when you push the button to activate them. They were not active

I have made a really good sail boat that goes faster than the wind and is only one core (gyro stabilizer). I will publish it in around 10hours.
(For fastest speed go up wind to the side of the wind with the sail 45 degrees to the leeward side of the boat.

day 107 or 108 of asking scrapman to start a Survival series amphibious tank/basically any transportation and floating base/barge (or under water.) But you need mods... it's a requirement to breathe underwater, if you want an underwater base/transportation. And yes i am talking about the underwater fan moonbo reviewed that basically makes water spaces air spaces... if that makes any sense.) (and if you wanted to move the barge/boat/floating base you are able to make thrusters/glitches/mods to do it or by lift or actual push)
