  • This time in Trailmakers I check out the sandbox mode and break the land speed record without using jets. Can I create a sonic boom using just an engine powered vehicle? I try to build and supersonic car in Trailmakers!

    Some points of interest: (maybe directed at the developer)
    - The mach-1+ condensation "halo" or cloud does not go away until the speed goes below mach-1. It actually only forms if the dew point (humidity) of the air is pretty high.
    - A sonic boom is not produced only once as a vehicle accelerates beyond the speed of sound or Mach-1. "Breaking the sound barrier" does not produce a boom that emanates out from the point that the speed "barrier" was broken.
    - *The pilot does not hear a sonic "boom".* Instead the pilot hears only sounds that are transmitted through the body of the vehicle. Any external sound produced by the engines or wind noise are left behind (traveling slower than the vehicle producing them) and the pilot can't hear them.
    - *A sonic boom is only experienced by an observer.* moving less than mach-1. Like the wave produced by a speed boat - the wave never goes away and is experienced by an observer as a pile up of water. In the case of sound, like the boat wake, the observer experiences a sudden pile up of sound (mostly engine sounds) as the shock wave passes by, producing a momentary "boom". The shock wave remains trailing behind the vehicle, but it only passes an observer once.

    Love this video, sequel is necessary. I was messing around with this a few months back and got to around 13,000 mph. Same basic wedge design as you, but spamming rockets instead of engines. Also, ditched the wheels. With rockets as a power source, they're unnecessary friction, and the game is coded kinda weird so that you go faster sliding/scraping the ground than on wheels. Adding fins for stability at those speeds is necessary for sanity, although it does cost you a little speed. Can also add two propellers on the rear perpendicular to the other engines for steering to help keep it straight. Also flip the seat upside down and tuck it in to the design so it doesn't stick up for less drag. Great video though, can't wait to see another!

    • @RamadaArtist
      @RamadaArtist 3 роки тому

      @Justin Fernandez I mean, this is my issue with real life jet powered land speed records. Literally all they're doing is building a fighter jet and clipping the wings off. When you get to the kinds of speeds that the land speed record currently exists as, (which is at least in the transonic regime, last I checked,) the fact that part of the vehicle is "technically" touching the ground is really only incidental to the entire experiment, because the vast majority of the forces you're dealing with at that point are aerodynamic. The current standing "land speed records" are, functionally, "ground effect speed records," and there are plenty of actual aircraft that would easily defeat the records as they currently stand.

    Dude, drag racing fan who also worked in a civil engineering firm here. Drag racing wheels WOULD be bad because they're super sticky and made for maximum acceleration under incredible stress. 4 seconds of acceleration with the main problem being grip because of the massive power. For maximum speed conversely, you want minimum grip, like 3mm of glass would be the perfect wheel if we could turn unbreakable on in the real world.

    i have some things to recommend:D
    1. you went faster with the smaller wheels because there’s less rolling resistance, this is why when you look at drag cars they have skinny tires in the front, its to maximize top speed
    2. a longer smoother nose cone is better from my understanding, as it doesn’t bring the air to as abrupt of a stop, i’d also recommend putting it all in a box as maybe this will stop the air from going in the gaps in between the front and back wheels.
    great video and i love the content non the less! :D

    It's cool that it shows the sonic boom, but that's not a singular moment, it's actually a constant phenomenon, and the angle is dependent on the speed at which you're going, so when you see it in this game it should be rather steep

    Contradictory to popular belief, more mass actually gives BETTER top speeds, just lower acceleration.

  • @loganstewart7065
    @loganstewart7065 3 роки тому +1

    Explanation: Drag racing relies on high acceleration and less top speed, as most drag racing takes place in a quarter of a mile. The large tire increases contact with the surface, increasing friction. This helps engines transfer power to the road for acceleration, but works against high speeds. Less surface area of rubber means less weight and less friction, increasing top speed at the cost of acceleration (in real life). Of course, I'm not an engineer (I'm only a music student and racing enthusiast), so if someone with more expertise sees something to add or correct, please do so.

    Would it be possible for you to create some kind of race structure like a velodrome?
    It might be able to give you the distance needed to increase the speed of the car instead of being constrained by the boundary at the end of the world.
    And if that works, would it be possible to create a hyperloop tunnel where there is limited air resistance?

    Here’s something about the wheels. The bigger. The slower
    The smaller. The faster.
    Small More rotations per second
    Large Less rotations per second
    Edit. also.
    Some wheels clip into the ground.
    Ground clippers. Motorcycle wheel. Drag wheel. Monster and truck wheel. Go kart wheel. And sometimes spiked/off-road wheels
    Non clippers. Slim wheel. Sometimes off-road/spiked wheel.
    Keep in mind more weight also causes them to clip.
    I know some of these because I play the game on Xbox with gamepass.

    Drag weels aren't good for speed because they're not made to maintain speed. They're designed to have an insane amount of grip while accelerating at super fast speeds. They are also not pumped up fully for more grip. That's why racing wheels are better.

    I think my 4 powercore plane is only around 800 after 10 seconds, but it has a turning radius of around a sixth of you vehicle's length.
    edit: for reference, you have 1146 power cores on your final design. 1 dragon engine (which is the type you are using) = 3 powercores.
    The power core amount is shown at the blue hexagon in the top right part of the screen.
