  • To purchase Commando Heads or find a dealer visit opskagit.com. While we may be known more for steelhead and salmon, we have a serious thing for smallmouth bass, for the following reasons: 1. They fight extremely hard. 2. They take many types of flies very well. 3. They live in a wide variety of habitats. 4. They have a huge range in the US and Canada. 5. They're beautiful. Bass fishing in the past has presented fly fishermen with a bit of a conundrum. In order to cast the large flies popular in many bass fisheries, fly fishers using conventional fly lines had to use heavy rods in the 6-8 weight range. While these rods are fun with bigger bass, they really aren't much fun at all for your typical 8-12 inchers. Commando Heads completely change the game by allowing you to fish the same 3-4 inch streamer flies on true 4 and 5 weight single hand rods. Fishing a rod that is appropriate to the average size of bass and other warm water fish is a true pleasure. Try a Commando Head on your favorite single hand rod today and rediscover your home water.

    I have never touched a skagit line before today in my life. I thought I'd give this a try as I've had so many problems casting big flies on my single hander using traditional lines. I got the 300 grain commando head paired with 35lb. lazar line and a 10ft. T8 MOW tip for my 8wt. single hander. I cut the bend off a zonker fly just in case I'd kill myself and went down to the river to practice. Single speyed fine, double speyed great, and after about two hours I was zinging out that a large fly 60 to 65ft. using a snap T. Totally awesome I'm thrilled with this porduct! I decided to tie on a large sculpin fly and entered a large slow pool to fish the evening. I ended the session with 3 solid early season smallmouth and two I missed. I can't thank you guys enough for sharing this set of techniques. Truly a game changer.

      Welcome to it OPSkagit. Please keep putting up these wonderful videos. It's great to see what possibilities are out there for these lines. I'm already putting together a light 4wt. setup for small bass and summer panfish. This is a blast.

    Just wanted to let you know that this system has changed the way I fly fish for bass. I'm planning on liquidating a few of my rods and outfitting my three primary setups with OPST skagit heads.

    this is really exciting. A few years ago Ed gave me some advise on skagit lines and spey rods for fishing for muskies as I live in northern Wisconsin. I am going to try these lines for bass and muskies here also. thanks

    Great video. I'm new with my switch rod. I have a Beulah 6/7 Classic switch. I have tried the set up from the fly shop and just cant get the hang of it. After talking to people in my area they all say it wont work. Will your line work on my rod and does it need a running line also. I fish a lot of single hook and articulated streamers.

    OPSKagit, that line looks phenomenal! I can see how it increases opportunity to cover more water. Do the heads come in different weights?

    • @krevo81
      @krevo81 7 років тому +1

      Yes. They have a list on their website of every length/gr weight of their heads for single handed, switch and spey rods. All you need is some running line, the correct weight head, and your sink tips.

    I'd like to put this system on my 8ft. 4wt. What size of running line and commando head would you suggest? I'd be using it much like in the video for warm water species.
    Thanks.

      hey thanks for the quick reply .. cant wait to try out some of these new heads.. i been using the 25 lb lazar line on an old ambush head and really liking it but it is kinda tough for me to deal with in these cold montana winters.. maybe switching to a thicker line would be an upgrade... ..do you prefer the thicker running line(35/40lb) with trout size heads in the 150-200 grain range? still launch just as good?

    please list the equipment used on these streams - 6wt - 9ft 4pc rod, backing line (ft?), shooting line (ft?), commado head( 14ft?) - tippet - 9ft - right off the reel i am 23ft - tossing 30ft means letting what another 10 ft of lazar or shooting line - never getting in to backing line on a stream like this....so can i omit the typical backing line 100ft length? thanks in advacne

    • @OPSkagit
      @OPSkagit  3 роки тому

      Again, we think that you're maybe overthinking things with the lengths. Let us know what rod you'd like set up, and we will be happy to give you recommendations. Typically ona 9' 6wt we use a 225 grain Commando Head (13.5'), 7.5' 60 grain Micro Skagit Commando Sink Tips, our 10' 50 grain Micro Skagit Commando Floating Tip, and our 35lb Lazar Line (165' roughly) Backing can range from 100-150 yards.

      Some spey setups include a swivel between the head and running line. I've experienced the same as you after a couple dozen casts off the same side.
