Single Hand Skagit with OPST Commando Heads - OPST

- This video features a bunch of single hand Skagit casts from Ben Paull of Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics. Ben lays out the case for using Commando Heads on single hand rods: they're fun, you can cast them almost anywhere, they're an affordable introduction to Skagit casting, you can fish big flies on light rods, you can make a variety of casts, and they are easier on your joints than overhead casting. If you want to experience trout fishing in a whole new way, then check this video out. For rod and line recommendations for any trout rod you already own or are thinking of owning, give us a call or email at info@opskagit.com or 206-858-8476.

I don't understand English, but I think this video is very helpful for practicing the Skagit casting because you can see the line well, and you can see the linkage between the arm movement and the line movement.
Wow that was some incredible casting!
Absolutely brilliant video
who's music? I see Oliver Sutro also used it quite catchy, just getting into the OPST, love them
You cast like a God!
Such a awesome system, I've never tried but will order
Very cool, but as close to spin fishing that fly fishing will get. More concentrated weight, and a lot of stripping line instead of having the weight more distributed that enables you to have longer line out of the rod - faster recast... But looks very fun :)
Sweet casting... so I know you said one can use the rods we have... but if you were to suggest a style of rod for the sub 9' category, what might it be? Slower action? Faster? Really doesn't matter? Curious to hear what rods or kinds of rods you've enjoyed most with your 150 and 175 grain setups?
Have used 175 on a fiberglass rod 7"6 and a graphite 9" 4wt. The 9ft was cash in the bank.
@@theschwiftyone9843 do you think I should go with 150 or 175 on my 10' 4wt euro rod? Its an echo carbon nymph xl. I'm new to skagit casting also
@@Nik-gh6gz I have a 3 weight max catch euro nymph rod. 150 was sweet.
Master Class come to the Salmon River this winter I'll Host bring extra set of Car Keys!!!!
i love this video -
my application is a little different in that i have mine setup for larger. fish so i can bass fish off this. system and i am having a devil of a time getting distance....with weight streamer type flies - i can see your commando head - blue green - can not see commando head - brown... nor tippet..... I have commando 10-ft, head 10 ft and 7.5 ft (changing)- 4-8 ft flourocarbon leader/ tippet - nothing tappered for bass....then dumbell eye fly....... using 4, 6 and 8 wt rods - practicing for reds in coastal flats - but not until i get the distance and accuracy i feel will not waste the trip.... i have watched you r casts over and over again - and with dry flies i can toss out another 15-20ft of laser line.... so thats 40-60 ft casts... plenty for where i fish small streams or even decent crosses.... any tips would be welcome...
thanks in advance
Hi. What rod are you casting with? 9 feet, medium fast action? Thanks.
I've got the line I just can't figure out the casting. Snap t is about all I can do. I wish he would spend more time discussing the various casts

My rod is 6'6".4w please let me know how to set it up with commando heads or commando smooth, where do I get it?
I'm really curious about those little pontoon boats... anyone know the makes?
I got one of your skagit heads. The funny thing is, every time I cast it, a weird thing would happen: at first the head fully extends as it should, then, *before* all the running line is out and the "bounce back" happens, the skagit head, while still in midair, will form a bend at about 10 ft from the tip and land on the water in a weird form. This happens even if I do traditional overhead casting. I decided it's a manufacturer's defect and never come back to OPST heads.
Sweet casting . I have shooting heads from you but am confused which ones go with what . Are the recommendations at the end for all size 4wts or are they different for different lengths . I'm mostly concerned with my 8' 4wt s-glass rod . I have 175, 200 , 250 and 5' sink tips , 5' floating tip and a 10'shs floating tip . What should I start out with on this rod . Oh , and I want to cast like you the first 30 minutes ! :-)
use the 175
Qiestion: when you say 3wt do you mean a "real" 3wt that is a lighter rod than a standatd 5wt single handed rod? I came across some information about "trout spey", I think this a double handed rod thing? But I was confused as they were saying a 2wt was like your typical 5wt...
I have a 9 foot 5wt echo lift single handed rod I would like to use to try this. Will this work?
So if I’m fishing a 6wt fiberglass rod, fishing for smallmouth, what head should I start with?
I would assume either a floating or a slow sinking tip
225 grain head.
What would you suggest for a 10' 6wt rod ?
225 to 250 grain head 7.5ft tip.
Can you throw big theeamers with this line like sex dungeons or Rio outbound better for that? Nice video 👌
Hi. What kind of Kajaks are those?
What's the weight of the 7.5' and 10' tips?
@Benjamin Paull hey, I have a sage foundation 690-4 and I was wondering what head to use?
I need this. I’m very new to fly fishing and would like to be able to throw a heavy fly with my 4wt
Pick the grain weight that you want and buy it. They are awesome for tight quarters, long casts, and quick casts. They are a game changer in the fly fishing industry.
Amazing video what would be your guys line recommendation for a 9-foot 8 weight rod
Can I use a micro skagit with a wf line on a 5wt. 9 ft. Single hand rod? What type of leader/ tippet.
Wonderful video.
Can you fish dries with Lazer Line using these?
Foam bodied type flies like Chernobyls should work well - I swing soft hackles 90% of the time during the main season but I'm experimenting with foam body caddis type flies to see what works and what doesn't
How much running line do you have out of the rod tip when you begin your cast?
Very little. You want to pull the head close to the tip of the rod.
What rod?
Hi I got 6 wt now but i cant cast Far enough to go to the edge of the banks. I dont have any problem casting with my eight weight.
I just got the OPST for 6 wt .i need a lesson i think. Who do you recommend I live in BC surrey
I posted this two months ago and all I get is only thumbs up.waaa very poor customer service I guess I need to ask help from rio shooting head. They always answered me almost right away.
@@raymelvinchan These commando head works well on a fast action rod. My 6wt rod cast like 💩. I underline the rod with a 200grain and much better!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤
I use a TFO Lefty Kreh 7'6" 3 wt and a Orvis Battenkill Disc 3/4 how much am i looking at getting into this type of fishing on my set up?
Charles Rinehart Use a 150 grain commando smooth.
Charles Rinehart and either a floating or sinking tip. www.pureskagit.com
Fishing a Commando head from a Commander pontoon boat...
I was born raised and still live 45 minutes from pyramid lake
You americans do not know what a "tight conditions" are when flyfishing😂
You haven't seen where I try to fish .
You haven't seen the 7ft wide creek I fish for suckers
I am not an American but I live in New York and I am really new to fly fishing. It’s a great video👍I learn some things from it.
@ahti29: put some your own fly fishing videos on UA-cam, please.
