Commando Heads for Alaskan Rainbows - OPST

- OPST fished the Kanektok River in July of 2015. It's hard to imagine a better river for micro Skagit and Commando Heads than the Kanektok. With tiny side channels, woody banks, and deep, broad main channels, the river was perfect for showcasing the incredible versatility of Commando Heads. We streamer fished, mouse fished, and nymphed with some of the largest split shot possible for the incredibly gorgeous, and potentially huge, rainbows of this special river. Thanks to Alaska West for providing a great experience for us.

I agree opst is becoming one my favorite companies in the fly industry.
Absolutely Gorgeous fish! thanks for sharing their beauty with us. I may never have seen them if not for this video. God Bless. Sean
Absolutely spot on, all I can say is I really like what you guys are about. Hopefully one day our paths well cross on some of these fishy waters together!
Love the video!
Damn. Great vid Trevor, This has me seriously pumped. Heading to the Kanektok in 20days. For a Full length float, from the lake to the salt, 11days 100miles!
Learned the casts from Jerry 2days on the Skagit in2015 and again on the OP 2016. Had dinner and beers w Trevor n Jerry at the puffn burger bar on the OP. The fish were nowhere to be found but I enjoyed every minute of it. Finally got a rig together recently 7wt Beulah can't wait to fling it in AK.
Great video guys! Great looking fish!
Dude those bows smash streamers harder than Hulk smashes bad guys!!!
Impressive commando heads! I am not sure whether I would go back to any other skagit heads now ;) Guys good job!
Fantastic. .......
my grandfather (Bill Martin, original/former owner of the Royal Coachman Lodge) used to tell me stories about this place from back in the seventies-nineties. He used to hold the first permits for tent camps on the Kanektok and for a little extra he would fly you up in his beaver for a few days. this video depicts all his descriptions beautifully.
OPSkagit he would tell me that 10lb bows were abundant in the upper/middle region of the river. We have many pictures from the era. The few lodges in the area would allow one “trophy trout” per person, per trip. They tried to keep the impact small but fiberglass mounts weren’t really a concept in the early years.
Thanks for the great tutorial, Trevor.. Lookin' forward to casting to those special K'tok 'Bows with some of that deadly OPST gear. Whole different thing.
What great photography
A pearl of a video
Thank you!
I can listen to Trevor all day, dude is a savage
Epic guys. I need to relocate!!🤔🤙
Nice video and music appropriate !
“Sculpin Thing”. Love it
I have not try there lines yet ! But looks very effective. I sort of made my own heads for say my 11.3' 7# rod I'm use a 12# and short it down to 24' long and 330gr it shoots as crazy when you anchor your leader who is long 15' taperd that I'm use for salmon on low river's in Sweden Norway I have use it in Montana as well when I'm been there. I going to buy OPSC short skagit in weight 350gr and compere to my own hand made heads. Nice video 👌
Bjorn from 🇸🇪
sitting up all night working on editing an edit, and found this. What an amazing video! This is a magical place. I hope to be blessed enough to find this.
Thanks a lot!
nice job!
Love the ATH
What kind of reel is that on the 5100 rod?
Awesome action!! What do you mean "9ft rod converted to two hand"?
What do you guys use for floating heads? Can you use a piece of the lazar line or do you prefer a Rio Mow tip or something like that?
what's the music?
I think I might have OPST syndrome. You guys caught some awesome fish. I need to talk to someone about your setup. Great job.
Please do! Send us an email at info@opskagit.com or call 206-858-8476 ext 2 for any questions you may have!
is that red shooting head also a commando?
Did you keep any? Looks like a healthy fishery
Very cool video. I am looking forward to trying out my newly acquired OPST Commando 175 for my 4/5 weight trout rods and a 375 for my Sage Z 8110.
The music is well matched. Who is it?
Thanks, glad you liked it. The music is by Garrett Eaton
Beautiful fish and awesome video. Nice job guys. What’s the closest town to these waters?
for all that stripping, are you guys using a PVC coated running line or still using the lazer line?
+Kyle McGraw Still using lazer line
What switch rod was the guy using at 11:13 ? Thanks
I think that was a Beulah Platinum 5100
@@bpaull08 what was the 7'6" 4wt rod and reel set up you had? looked like a blast
@@sttokes it was a Leland Rod Company 7'9" kids rod. I'm not sure they make it anymore. Super fun zippy little thing
"egg sucking sculpin thing" haha
What type of line do you attach your Commando Head to?
Trevor I really love the video! Did you put the skagit on regular fly line or did you use running line?
We used OPST Lazar line in the video, 30 and 35 pound.
That last one was a cutthroat no? had orange under its gills.
Might as well just drift fish with spinning rod at that point ! Fly rods are for top water flies, nymphs that’s when it’s fun. Not a lot of weight and beads
We prefer to think that fly rods are for whatever the owner wants to use them for!
@@OPSkagit Correct, I gillnet the river with my fly rods
14:09 If their gills are not under water your not reviving them. You cant jut put their mouth in the water.
+Benjamin Holm for sure, I should have held the trout lower in the water. In the realm of horrible fish handling this is not bad, there are guides who hold fish out of water and take pictures, drop fish in drift boats and use barbs. If 14.09 troubles you, you may not want to look at anymore photos or videos in the internet cause you will be appalled. If you look at the fish handling in this entire video you will see how much we care about these fish. Every fish I catch or my client catches always swim away. Thanks
dunno, opts are over priced and don,t hold up as well as the airflo PVC lines,After one seasons use 2 commando heads that are cracking and becoming brittle, i pay far less for the Airflo product..my 2cents
Music sounds depressing and not applicable in my respectful opinion. Otherwise, awesome video!
Thanks for the feedback
That's some ugly ass casting.... But I suppose if catching a fish is the goal then it does the job.. just as a spinner or a worm.
Thanks for the feedback! Feel free to show us how it's done!
