Dave it is always a pleasure watching you cast. Hopefully i will run into you on the water again. I will have to look into this casting system, looks pretty darn good. Anytime you can cast with little effort is a win win and especially as i get older.
Wow just seeing this out of the box ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.
I've got a tfo bvk 9ft 8wt that I use for bass on my home lake and I got a 300 grain with a mono running line for it and can't seem to make a simple roll cast, do I need a mow tip or can I just use a regular 1x tapered leader
Hello, i have a 9feet Weight 5 fly Rod, how much Grain should i have on the fly line! And do i need to have a mow tip, or only floating rio versileader!
Hey. Something like 200-225 gr. On my 9ft 6 Weight I use a 250 head an it's dead on. And generally no, you don't really need a mow tip, in fact if you want to use one you might one to go with a lighter head. To me, usually fishing really tight small streams, the mow tip makes the rig to long, since you ideally want to keep the head and tip outside your guides, and I don't need it to sink that fast either. What I use is standard 5 ft AirFlo polyleaders with just a small bit of tippet up front; this way you can use a fast sinking one with streamers and nymphs, but by adding a floating poly you can swing dry flies with it as well which, while not ideal for a subtle presentation certainly gives you reach from really tight spots. You could of course also get a Mow-tip or some of that Tungsten line material and shorten it a bit, but the polyleaders are cheaper and more versatile, you can get a set of five in different sink rates for the price of one Mow-tip
he said he's using a 200 grain head with a floating mow tip. According to the line chart, mow tips aren't recommended until the 250 grain weights. I was about to buy another head for my 6wt. This is a little confusing.
@@OPSkagit I definitely know how to setup the system for swinging. I was just curious if there was a way to fish indicator/nymph with the system. Thank you.
@@everythingflytv507 you could set it up by adding a 10’ float tip and a tapered trout leader. Our lines are not specific to by phong but you can get it done. We’ll work on a video soon.
I also do salt water fishing, mostly for bonefish. Anyway stick with this, lots of people think just because it skagit its easy and it is but to make it pretty and nice will take some work. Nice loops are very possible, slowing way down is hard to get your head around when you come from overhead casting. I’m thinking you likely feel this is clunky but if you give it a real go with practice, I know 100% you can find nice loops and ample distance. Keep at it bud and don’t stop asking questions.
@@bpaull08 thanks! I'm going after salmon, so 40lb Lazar and a 250 grain head should be good, and also what backing and tip should I use? Is a MOW tip good or is it too long?
As an avid river angler & user of both single & doublehand rods…Is it just me or looking close at this guys casting, isn’t he just loading the backcast with the existing downstream current and a double haul on most of those casts. I don’t see how you can call that any type of legit Skagit anything. I don’t know, just the way I see it. 🤷🏻♂️

Love seeing another Dead Head on the water 💧 great information 👍

Make a video of someone indicator fishing, 5wt, 6wt maybe, that would be awesome, and I can't wait to get it for my rods hehe
Good stuff! Can't beat northern Wisconsin in the summer. The line looks awesome too. Going to have to make the committment now and buy.
these heads are really awesome - well done guys, great product (y) (y)

Do I use the lazar line for this rig? Going 9' 6w and maybe 225g Commando...? So stoked to try this on some big trout up here in BC
wow this dude is so cool
That reel would drive me nuts!
There is no better sound than a "Hardy"
Personally I would go with the Bob Lazar line....out of this world.

Hi Daniel, go with a 200 grain. A versileader works very well. A light MOW tip is a little bit overkill for that setup. - Ben Paull, GM OPST

those are just reccomendations. adapt and experiment. I have a 325 commando on my 5wt single hand for gods sake ahaha
Jesus I would kill to be able to cast like that lol
You probably will if you do 20 years of guiding first lol
Noice job Dave!!
I guess you use hardy. Famous click drag scream at 4:20
The song of the Hardy ;-)
Would this be an option as a more extreme musky line, not spey casting or is it more practical to run a short head fly line.
Thank you for your reply I think this is going to be my new line.
Nice.
What size clouser (approx weight in grains) is Dave casting in this video, and how long of a tippet is he using?
Thanks
@Benjamin Paull hey, I have a sage foundation 690-4 and I was wondering what head to use?
Your rod will like our 225 grain Commando Head, 7.5' 60 grain Micro Skagit Commando Sink Tips, 7.5' 35 grain Micro Skagit Commando Floating Tip, and our 35lb Lazar Line. Hope this helps!
@@OPSkagit thanks! Could I get away with 40lb?

For one hand skagit casting, what kind of action you recommend? Med-fast, fast or extra fast?

Do that line work on split cane rods
Yes it does!
i have 9ft 6L weight tfo signature series 2nd what head should i go with
+OPSkagit OK thank you for the help
What kind of polyleader do you use on a 6wt 9ft rod?
wondering what a polyleader is?
What kind shoointg line use? Lazar line?
Can i use other running line?
How i should set up? Lazar line, commandos head and tip, tippet?
OPSkagit i have 9' 9wt echo ion, i use for saltwater and i would like use for steelhead also, and i have spey rod
What is the head length on these for a 7 or 8 weight single hander ?? Cheers 👍

would 200 grain work well for my 7 weight?
