I Used Oil For 20K Miles W/Out Changing It So You Don’t Have To - Lab Analysis

  • In this episode of doing silly things just to see what happens, we put 20,000 miles on a car without changing the oil or filter. It took one year and two months to accrue 20,755 miles. At the end of it, the oil was sent to a lab for analysis.

If it's consuming oil at the rate of just over a quart per 1000mi, so long as you continue to check and replenish it regularly the weak point will be the filter.
The engine failures I see as a technician due to 'extended oil change intervals' are people who put an extended mileage oil in and never check the level, or replenish the level as the vehicle consumes it - in fact it's been my experience that most assume that oil is a separate or sealed system, and the idea that vehicles can normally consume oil at rates as high as 1qt per 1000mi is completely foreign to them.

Look at oil fields and pumping stations that run a cat or similar diesel engine, that never shuts down. They only change the oil filters on it. Keep the oil clean and add new oil if it gets low and that motor will run forever till it won't but that take years or decades. Look at real life works in application and see why oil doesn't lose its viscosity, it only get dirty or might need more cleaning agent added to it once in a while. Main thing is to keep the filtering system clean. See Project Farm, on his study of oils and testing them. ua-cam.com/channels/2rzsm1Qi6N1X-wuOg_p0Ng.html. Do a compression test on the cylinders to see if there is any additional wear going on or taking place on the next test cycle.

I forgot to change my oil when I bought a car 2 years ago. I bought a 2013 hyundai sonata. It had a brand new motor in it from warranty recall on it. I ended up changing it after 26k miles. I messed up the engine. It runs good still but if I try hard acceleration on a highway it pings and smokes. But if I drive regular and not get on the gas hard it drives like a dream. When hyundai replaced the motor right before I bought it they put in 5w 20 synthetic mobile 1. I replaced it with the same stuff. We're thinking it messed up the valve guide seals so I'm going to replace the guide seals and see if that's what happened.

My sister bought a brand new 2019 Nissan murano and didn’t change the oil for 27k miles all short trips and in cold weather . Check engine light came on and was a code for low oil pressure. I checked the dip stick and caked on the dipstick was sludge . Oil cap was also covered in sludge. The fact that you effectively changed the oil during the test is a little bit of a Wahaaa….wahaaa….wahaaa moment, but I think the metal content analysis is still very interesting as oil was only added and not actually changed, which would have reduced the metal count. But oil was only added and if damage was being done to the engine, the metal count should have been much higher. Your TBN# sucked. You are using a crap oil. It has a very poor cold pour point. You should have actually used Mobil1, Pennsoil or Amsoil. The oil is not doing it's job if you are using that much oil. It's NOACK Volitility test must really suck. A "Full Synthetic" only has to contain 25% synthetic. Amsoil is a 100% Synthetic. Also, remember when you perform a test like this you also need to use a filter that's rated the same or you will have to change the filter at appropriate intervals.
