Nice review. We're considering this car, as it's nice and the only viable family EV atm. Like you say, range isn't everything, It's pointless to buy 400km range, when you only drive perhaps 20km in a day. EDIT: test drove this yesterday...both thumbs up from me and wife. Too bad wait times to get one are so long...

I think it is because the e-Golf tires are not (as) low rolling resistance, and the Ioniq has lower aero drag, as well. I wish that ALL EV's had coasting by default. On out Leaf, I just shift into N, and it coasts very well, then back into D or B to get regen.
That's weird because my e-Golf just rolls and rolls (if I put in it D mode) -- the 2016 SE does have low rolling resistance tires though, so maybe Neil is right.
You can't just look at the numbers the cars show to know the range! Because the cars don't calculate the same. You have to do a real range test or you shouldn't state anything more than the epa range. I've driven the ioniq up towards 250km many times and it is really efficient on the highway. I haven't tried the new e golf yet but I really doubt the golf will get the same range as the ioniq due to the aerodynamics of the cars.
Proud owner of the e-Golf here, I get 250Km range easily (mixed urban/highway use). Record is 314Km by youtuber 1000HP. The bigger battery pays totally off for the heavier chassis. Hyundai is still a nice car tho.
Sascha H One needs to do a side by side range test over the highway to really know but I'd place my money on the ioniq. I'm convinced it will go farther.
I have been driving this car since spring 2017. Bought it as a demo, manufactured nov 2016. Covered 223.000 kilometers! Battery level is at 93%, so only 1% degradation per year. Up until 100 km/hrs more efficient than a Tesla Model 3. Still performs as on day 1. I am not selling. Next car maybe Tesla Model 2, or trimmed (width) Aptera.

Two idiots with fish let's hope we go straight to the upgraded battery in Aus. Their excuse for not launching in 2017 was something to do with the infotainment system.
This looks like the best EV for the price right now. The Leaf is also great but the recharge time is poor and uses more energy per mile. On paper the bigger batt may be nice, but in practical use, having an awesome recharge time, and using the energy consumption are the main goals. Leaf is also 10k cheaper and coming out with a 2019 model with even better range and possibly thermal induction on the battery for the same price so that will be a gamechanger. By then the Ioniq could be refined into vast improvements as well, what a great time to be alive. 2019 looks like it will be the year EVs will be seen on the roads occassionally than rarely!
Japanese cars are right hand drive, that explains the layout of the transmission selectors. this is much like cars made in left hand drive markets which have controls that work better using the right hand and not so well with left, for instance BMW iDrive and similar.

Well loaded with all the extras one could want. Now if it only was actually available .. there are apparently only like 2 in the entire state of CA dealerships
For anyone who is unsure about whether they could "live" with an EV, try this: At the beginning of the month with your current gas-powered vehicle, reset the trip odometer and drive it as you normally would. After the last day of the month, look at your trip miles (or kilometers) and divide by the number of days in that month (30 or 31). You might be surprised how low this number actually is.... If it's like the national average, it's probably around 30 miles (48 kilometers) or less, which means, on average, you'd only have to plug in once or twice a week!
Hi, quick question - when you let off the "electricity" :P ... do the taillights come on to show the people behind you that you are slowing down? (I test drove the Tesla S and when it goes in to regen braking, it activates the brake likes).
I recently drove the base Ioniq hybrid and was very unimpressed. The (north Toronto) dealer refused to offer anything less than MSRP. Plus the dealer would not stock a demo car, so there is no way to try the EV out!
SmartElectricCar I drove it and liked it a lot. I drove both the base and the upper trim with the wife tires. it out handles any other hybrid by far and feels incredibly light. could use more steering feel is my only gripe. but the suspension is amazing !
Yes I mention that. The Bolt Regen on demand is only on or off though, the Ioniq is a 3 step paddle making it more adjustable or variable. Thanks for the comment.
Great review man, I like the non biased pros n cons. I feel the same way as you do, when you referred to "I would like to have a combination of all 3 vehicles (Bolt, eGolf, Ioniq) all in 1 vehicle. The only thing I don't like about the Ioniq is the range. I drive on average, about 160km/day. And since the winters are brutally cold up here in Ottawa Ontario, well, I'm thinking the range could drop dangerously close to what I need on a day to day basis. I know you mentioned that on the eGolf, you were able to get up to 275km.....Would you think you could get that on average? If so, I may have to look at the eGolf. In the Ottawa area, Chev dealers are giving a 2-3 year wait list for the Bolt.....yep, you read that right....2 to 3 Y E A R S ! ! ! ! The salesman DID say that it would likely come in sooner than 2, but, then I have to think about how long the Ontario government is going to keep the 14k rebate going.

Mike Auger it all depends on the speed you're driving at. If you never drive over 80km/h you'll always get from 230-300km of the ioniq even in the coolest winter. But if you're driving at 120km/h you'll only get around 150km of range in winter.
REALLY ??!?! That's pretty good then. I live in Ontario Canada, and the max on highway is 100km. And since I'm a good boy, and also in the spirit of saving $ on fuel, I rarely if ever go over 100km (62 mph) on highway. I test drove the Volt on an overnight loan from a dealership, and I had no trouble getting used using regen. . . . . Ok then, maybe I'll give the ionic ev a closer look. Thanks Filip ;)
Hi ako, do you live in a climate that has winters? I'd be interested if you could tell me what you get per charge on your ioniq. Our winters up in canada can get down to about -20 celcius on average. It's the range on the ioniq that is a deal breaker for me. But Filip mentioned in his reply to me that he can get 230-280 on a charge. Sounds good to me ! :)
Hyundai says the interior conditioned air is channeled to cool the battery, so I guess it's Cooled Air Cooled, but in all honesty I'm pretty sure that's just the Korean way of saying "Better than Leaf worse than Bolt."
Very professional review, thanks. This is an interesting EV. Shame about the range; though I suppose for my work commute of 40 miles round trip it would be sufficient so long as I charged the car every other day.

I have no real issue re plugging my car in to charge every night, although I would want to know from the manufacturer that doing so wouldn't have a negative effect on the batteries life span.
It's not intuitive and that's a no-go. Better would be "D", followed by "N", followed by "R" in front-rear-direction, then some space or a cup holder, then a bigger "P" button. Alternatively, the "P" button can be placed on the right side of the 3 other buttons (being not symmetric which it doen't need to be). I hope, any button does only work while the car has stopped - otherwise the front-seat passenger could easily press a button by accident...
One pedal driving with the BMW i3 is far more intuitive than using your hands & paddles to brake. Want to coast? Just lift off the throttle a little. Want more regenerative braking? Lift off the throttle a bit more... or fully for maximum regenerative braking. I don't see the benefit of involving your hands in the accelerating & braking component of driving... :-/
Paul, two reasons: 1) It's really hard to get your car to coast neutrally with just the gas. And coasting is always going to be more efficient than regen. 2) "No reason to involve hands" -Why do we have cruise control then? I'd love this feature when riding down Norwegian fjords :) 3) If you want, you can leave it on the max regen and do what you suggested :)
Aerodynamic design is not styling, per se. More like engineering. Styling is the blacked out grill, and the chines (the creases in the sheet metal) - kinda' like the graphics, so to speak.
I'd wish he had thrown into the mix the Ford Focus Electric 2017 with its bigger battery (35 kw/h) and much cheaper price tag. Oh well. At 45 K+ CAD, I don't see the Chevy Bolt as a direct competitor to this Hyundai Ioniq at all.

You can't delete it. Just like the Ionic and the Bolt, the highest trim Leaf model comes with standard leather. If you don't want leather, you have to get a lower trim model.
Expensive , I just leased the Ioniq hybrid. Love it. I have the limited Ioniq 2017, msrp about28 k. Would love the EV version but they not even sell it in my state and looks like rebates are in danger here in USA with the fascist in power.
Luckily, rebates are still available, plus state-level incentives (e.g., no sales tax for pure EVs here in NJ). I would look at e-Golf as well as Ioniq and decide.
If someone was going to give me one the 3 EV vehicles for free, I would take the Bolt EV. I just like the huge amount of range you get, and I think it's a good looking car.
I am VERY interested in an EV so thank you for the video and information. However I am waiting until they get them where they are practical. First they need to get the price down to the same level as a gas model of comparable size which would be around half what they are asking. Second they need to get range up to around 500 miles using full heat or air. And third they need to get the charging times down to around 10 or 15 minutes empty to full charge.
The Model 3 is not a practical car. Tesla played it safe and made a smaller Model S with less frills but the front of the M3 looks crap, the trunk opening too small, most people who've never used the door handles will have trouble, no instrument cluster will confuse people having to turn their head to see how fast they're going... i could go on. I'd wait to get all the bugs smoothed out, maybe Model Y would be better.
the trunk opening is small but it will still fit a lot more than the ioniq. arguably you probably wont even be able to make use of the hatch of the ioniq as the trunk is rather small anyways. How often will you fit a single boxy item occupying the whole trunk? In my experience never. It is usually a collection of smaller or long and wide items. Dont forget you can also load the Model 3 from the passenger doors! The instrument cluster is not an issue. The screen extends so high and close to the driver that the actual distance of eyemotion is THE SAME as moving the eyes to the instrument cluster. Being an EV there is no real need to see anything but the speed. Not to mention that a digital centre gauge (which the Model 3 one is not, it is actually off centre and much closer to the driver) will be quicker to look at than an analogue gauge on the front dash. Yes the ioniq is an ok car and will be a great car once it has a big battery. but i think this is an accident made by people who have no clue about EVs (i.e. the management, no disrespect to the engineers who did a great job. the car is better than what it should be)
It's their first consumer class vehicle, so I'd take it with a grain of salt until the Feedback of the first owners arrive. It's quite easy to build a good car above 100k$
Except you can't get a $35k one. Even on the base, delivery and fees make it $38k. The early order ones are optioned such that they are $42-45k. No base models for quite a while.

+ako mohammadi Sorry ako, I'm just going from my 2 week experience. Not even remotely close to getting 250kms especially when you say easily. Maybe you're hyper mailing but not regular driving. I'm. It saying that you didn't do it but in my experience, I couldn't do it and those are my facts.
I can comfirm a range of 240+ km. I just got the car 2 weeks ago and made a 150km trip, 90km left on the counter, 11.8 kwh battery usage. About 10 degrees celsius here in northern norway. Heat on the ac.fully packed trunk + Two kids and wife. very happy with the car so far:-)
It also has the best interior out of the 3 in my opinion. I know lots of people that have ordered the e-Golf just for the styling reason. They want a car that looks normal.
I am interested in the concept but they are just not practical at this time. Once the distance up to a comparable gas model, the price down to a comparable gas model, and the charge times down to a comparable gas model filling up. For now they are impractical over priced toys. I am hoping that changes soon.
Price is too high for 28KW battery. Hyundai should have priced it around $25-30K, Nissan Leaf 2018 is only $30K with longer range. Nissan Leaf 2018 is the best all around EV in 2018 and will blow away Tesla Model 3 in sales volume!
Leaf is super solid but unfortunately it is not as efficient, it uses much more kwH per mile than this even with faster stable speeds, and recharging takes much much longer. The Ioniq can you give 80% battery in just under an hour. Both are great though, the 2019 leaf with higher range, faster charge time, and thermal induction for battery temps could make it a clear winner. By then Hyundai may have improved as well, what a great time to be alive!
200km range means, it's not a car, but a toy. It is even too short for middling drifts. End of story. There is still no alternative to a Tesla. All other manufacturers have overslept by years. I hope Model 3 will exterminate many of these ignorants.

Tesla has already sold 200.000+ cars which has, in fact, already changed the world. Not even only by itself, but by forcing the complete industry to produce EVs ready for the road. And tell me only one manufacturer reaching this level of sells after 10 years of existence. Ok, let's see what happens with Model 3. It's been a great risk, but as long as the company can earn their costs, it is wonderful. There is no need to make much profit.

Since the Ioniq can charge (DC) with up to 70kW, you can actually fill the battery up pretty fast, so it does not require such a big battery.

The e-Golf has coasting in D, as well. And it has 4 levels of regen on the shifter. And all three you mention have regen on the brake pedal.

Hyundai was formed 1947, Honda Motor Company in 1949. The name "Hyundai" comes from the Korean word 現代 (hanja form), which means "modernity"
The only way to pronounce it correctly is to say it in Korean.
Hyeon dae I think is how the Koreans pronounce it.

Just have regen on full all the time and it works the same;-) on this car you have a choice.

because electric vehicles don't need any cooling... if anything they need warming in the winters :)

what the review completly omits is the rediculous charging speeds which rival those of Teslas vehicles (in proproprtion to the battery size).
And because of this shape here, you can close it with no problem

You can't delete it.
Just like the Ionic and the Bolt, the highest trim Leaf model comes with standard leather.
If you don't want leather, you have to get a lower trim model.

Would love the EV version but they not even sell it in my state and looks like rebates are in danger here in USA with the fascist in power.
Luckily, rebates are still available, plus state-level incentives (e.g., no sales tax for pure EVs here in NJ). I would look at e-Golf as well as Ioniq and decide.
Canada here, got my Ioniq ev May 2017. At the time $14,000 incentive in Ontario (gone now). About $21,500.00 USD. Glad I didn't wait.

If someone was going to give me one the 3 EV vehicles for free, I would take the Bolt EV. I just like the huge amount of range you get, and I think it's a good looking car.

I am VERY interested in an EV so thank you for the video and information. However I am waiting until they get them where they are practical. First they need to get the price down to the same level as a gas model of comparable size which would be around half what they are asking. Second they need to get range up to around 500 miles using full heat or air. And third they need to get the charging times down to around 10 or 15 minutes empty to full charge.
All 3 in one... Performance, styling, range. So... You want the Tesla Model 3.
If your rich lol, forget about the 35K, that's for the first orders and a plain Jane model, price will go up quickly for the others

The Model 3 is not a practical car. Tesla played it safe and made a smaller Model S with less frills but the front of the M3 looks crap, the trunk opening too small, most people who've never used the door handles will have trouble, no instrument cluster will confuse people having to turn their head to see how fast they're going... i could go on. I'd wait to get all the bugs smoothed out, maybe Model Y would be better.
the trunk opening is small but it will still fit a lot more than the ioniq. arguably you probably wont even be able to make use of the hatch of the ioniq as the trunk is rather small anyways. How often will you fit a single boxy item occupying the whole trunk? In my experience never. It is usually a collection of smaller or long and wide items. Dont forget you can also load the Model 3 from the passenger doors! The instrument cluster is not an issue. The screen extends so high and close to the driver that the actual distance of eyemotion is THE SAME as moving the eyes to the instrument cluster. Being an EV there is no real need to see anything but the speed. Not to mention that a digital centre gauge (which the Model 3 one is not, it is actually off centre and much closer to the driver) will be quicker to look at than an analogue gauge on the front dash.
Yes the ioniq is an ok car and will be a great car once it has a big battery. but i think this is an accident made by people who have no clue about EVs (i.e. the management, no disrespect to the engineers who did a great job. the car is better than what it should be)

Except you can't get a $35k one. Even on the base, delivery and fees make it $38k. The early order ones are optioned such that they are $42-45k. No base models for quite a while.
Get your fact right. You can easily drive ioniq 250-280km. I have it and drove it 280km. 80km city and 200km highway. Do a full test og drive it from 100% to 5% and turn off the regen
+ako mohammadi Sorry ako, I'm just going from my 2 week experience. Not even remotely close to getting 250kms especially when you say easily. Maybe you're hyper mailing but not regular driving. I'm. It saying that you didn't do it but in my experience, I couldn't do it and those are my facts.

A good car. I love it. Living in Norway and alot of people have ordered this one. Its charge very fast and have good range.
I can comfirm a range of 240+ km. I just got the car 2 weeks ago and made a 150km trip, 90km left on the counter, 11.8 kwh battery usage. About 10 degrees celsius here in northern norway. Heat on the ac.fully packed trunk + Two kids and wife. very happy with the car so far:-)
I dit 172 km/h for 20 km (A3 Germanie) and 142 km/h for 85 km. The Heather at 22 C° drivers only. The temp. was 5 - 10 C°.
I had 40 km left after that
eGolf sounds like a weak choice. The best features are traditional styling and "heavy feel?"
It also has around 270km of range instead of 210 or so in the Ioniq plus a luxurious interior and cool tech (active info display)
I don't know what model you have but I couldn't get more than 211 km range after 2 weeks
It also has the best interior out of the 3 in my opinion. I know lots of people that have ordered the e-Golf just for the styling reason. They want a car that looks normal.

I am interested in the concept but they are just not practical at this time. Once the distance up to a comparable gas model, the price down to a comparable gas model, and the charge times down to a comparable gas model filling up. For now they are impractical over priced toys. I am hoping that changes soon.

Price is too high for 28KW battery. Hyundai should have priced it around $25-30K, Nissan Leaf 2018 is only $30K with longer range. Nissan Leaf 2018 is the best all around EV in 2018 and will blow away Tesla Model 3 in sales volume!

Leaf is super solid but unfortunately it is not as efficient, it uses much more kwH per mile than this even with faster stable speeds, and recharging takes much much longer. The Ioniq can you give 80% battery in just under an hour. Both are great though, the 2019 leaf with higher range, faster charge time, and thermal induction for battery temps could make it a clear winner. By then Hyundai may have improved as well, what a great time to be alive!
