It's 26 if you count Sheik, 25 if you don't. I think both answers should be accepted. Personally, I don't count Zelda and Sheik separately since they share a spot on the character select screen.
All smash players should just switch over to melee imo. Ngl I’ve always wondered why y’all wanna play a slower, clunkier version of the game and it dawned on me… its prolly because it’s easier to play brawl, sm4sh & ultimate compared to melee or smash 64. Low key its a “tech skill issue” for y’all if anything else
the real answer is that the games are simply not replacements for each other, they're very different games in terms of how they're played and what the metas look like. Secondly a lot of people won't play melee due to it bring worse in terms of options, the lack of remappable controls is part of why im not going to play the game seriously, i don't like tap jump and i like trigger jump, im not gonna play a plat fighter where those aren't options for the game. Secondly i don't actually like any of the melee characters gameplay wise, which is part of why i prefer P+ since i play Charizard, Pit and Kirby (yes Kirby is in melee but he's so much less fun to play the any other form of kirby) You have to learn to accept that people can just enjoy things and that it's not a simple matter of "muh skill" by that logic why don't you play a fighting game with higher execution like MVC2 or SF3?
