  • @ChefBoyarDEEZ
    @ChefBoyarDEEZ Рік тому +3

    Air velocity matters greatly in an intake. If you stick a 3 inch intake on a 2 inch TB, all the air is going to get turbulent at the choke point and hurt performance. You'd be better off running a 2 inch tube on a 2 inch TB. So if you slap one of those $20 ebay intakes on your ride, chances are it will be nice and loud but no gains or worse, loss in power. I did this with my 96 Infiniti G20. Went from stock to ebay intake, felt sluggish, put the stock tube back on with the pod filter, and got power. Then I read an article about intake air velocity and flow and decided to make my own intake. Went to Pepboys and got intake tubing the same size as the throttle body, drilled my own holes and it definitely felt the best of all 3 combos. Never tested it on a dyno or anything but there was a noticeable difference between the 3. So now I'm pretty selective when picking out intakes.

  • @aserta
    @aserta Рік тому +11

    The only thing i would've changed with Marty's improvised run is swapped the 90 he's holding at 4:36 for two more 45's and a bit of straight pipe. That way the air doesn't need to make that narrow 90 twice. If you improvise this kind of stuff, it's good to avoid narrow 90's as much as you can, same rules as house ducting, but... in pipping for liquids, you don't need a soft 90, so there's none to buy (not at that size anyways).
    Also, PVC is perfectly good for the engine bay, by the time it melts, your wires are going to short on account of losing the insulation. One can step up their game and go with fire proof piping, used in modern buildings. That stuff is even higher on the melting point, and decent if you happen to pass near something very hot.

    I had the option of fitting a pod filter to my Eunos but in the end I just drilled a few 50mm holes in the airbox underneath the filter for added induction noise and left the standard filter in place. Made zero difference to the power but the extra noise made me smile every time I pressed the accelerator. And after I fitted a new exhaust and manifold I couldn't hear it anyway so I'm glad I didn't waste any money on it 😂

    @samhicks97 Рік тому +1

    Marty's "custom" intake has some clear advantages in the pod filter/intake design, It's construction is PVC, very smooth surfaces and slightly less bends comparing to the stock intake, The filter pleting is plentiful compared to the K & N, and the stock filter, Main problem lies in the bends of the 90* elbows in the PVC setup, Air doesn't like to change direction abruptly and will cause reversion upon coming up on the corners of the PVC, Plastic is a somewhat a good heat insulator so the cold air will remain somewhat cold.
    Moog's K & N setup has few disadvantages, no pro's i can see, aside from the K&N name plastered on the pod filter, The negatives are the corrugated tubing, this causes turbulence in the intake ducting, bad for power, The K&N filter is a tad small? and the filter pleting is close together, choking the engine, oh, forgot the other disadvantage, the $500 price tag.
    Regardless, there is no such thing as a "Superior Performance, superior filtering air filter"
    You can only get one or the other.
    Filter less = more air = More power, BUT less air filtered so you get dirt and dust in the motor.
    Superior filtering = less power = cleaner intake air.
    Just some thoughts watching this video.
    Something interesting to research on also is: Intake sonic pulse tuning,
    something i didn't cover in my long paragraph, read up on it, it's interesting.
    I believe that's what Scotty might have been thinking of, Intake runner length can be detrimental or quite a powerful tuning skill to have.

    I disagree with Scott every K & N filter I've seen has dirt behind the filter. Marty's one has more surface area and probably filters better too.

    A DIY tip for PVC intercooler piping is to fill a long length with fine beach sand cap off each and leave it in the sun on a hot day or help it with a hair drier and then bend it to the shape of your engine bay let it cool then remove all the sand and presto, you have no joins. The sand prevents it from kinking so you'll have even diameter.

    • @siffoine
      @siffoine Рік тому

      Hard to believe it would work with that diameter. Sure it works for computer cooler hard tubing or greenhouses, but here the pipe wall thickness to kink size ration is not on your side, as the plastic needs to stretch around the kink and there simply is not enough of it.

I ran 14pound with a td05 -18g, it held for long enough (5 months of p plates) for me To track down a oem water/air. Gave the pipes to a guy at a liberty meet in Perth in 2012 so they could live on.

    The PVC would be just as good if anything the tube would flow better not being convoluted you could even buy a K&N for Martys for like $100.
    Moogs filter was tiny. You can get a similar SAAS kit for like $60 with convoluted tube and pod in a box.

    For $20 i bought a used fmic kit for a twin turbo liberty. heaps of stainless pipes and different silicon joiners and a bunch of hose clamps. made up a cold air kit for my impreza, yanked out the foglight and put a filter right behind it. not bad, dorts good.

    I made my own intake for my BH Subaru wagon (US Outback) out of ABS pipes and rubber joiners. I used the factory 'air horn' that feeds air from just above the radiator, bringing in cold outside air, then made a straight run to the elbow to the factory airbox, eliminating the extra bends and intake mufflers. Sounds better, better throttle response on tip in, and seems to improve torque pulling longer grades. Importantly, though, I did this 12+ years ago. It is still holding up. I also still have the factory ducts, if I got crazy and decided to put it back.

    I did also put a pod filter on the 206(not for HP but for fun) it just fits perfectly on the stock inlet pipe no need for the extra piping and no need to get an adapter for the MAF sensor if you wanted to do it real cheap. Sad I just got rid of my 206 few days before Marty bought his

    I always leave the stock airbox and just put a K&N drop-in filter that I replace every few years (I don't bother cleaning and re-oiling. Too much risk to the MAF). But the airbox itself is literally one of the last things I would ever touch.
    This doubles to help when you get pulled over because it looks more stock so cops kind of overlook the smaller details that would give it away.

    Questions on the suitability of ABS in an engine bay aside... would it not be worth lagging that pipe to insulate it, make the most of what cold air you manage to suck in?

    • @raoulrr
      @raoulrr Рік тому

      PVC is already a pretty good insulator (miles better than an aluminum pipe for example)
      Where you place the end of the intake to draw air in is a lot more important, as far as intake air temps go.

    • @rossstewart9475
      @rossstewart9475 Рік тому

      @@raoulrr It's not PVC though, it's ABS. If it were PVC, there's be no need to insulate the pipe.
      ABS is still a reasonably decent insulator, but lagging it would provide twofold benefit in delaying the time it takes to heat soak the ABS (after which it would be heating any air passing through it), and also reducing the potential damage to the ABS from the engine's heat.
