The new Volvo XC approaches the interior standard of the Lexus, so shame that wasn't featured. The brand new Volvo V90 estate betters just about anything that isn't a Bentley! The GLE on reliability is a very poor performer judging by reliability surveys, meanwhile the Lexus took top spot in the JD Power survey 2016. I don't know how the presenter managed 44mpg....the true average as reported by owners is closer to 36mpg (which mirrors what I get from mine). A pretty fair and balanced review overall.

After watching this review and visiting my lexus dealer, I'm looking for the Lexus, hybrid. Agree with you. It's different and economical, it's also exempt from London forthcoming ULEZ extension.
Hope people in the UK realize this soon as well, the German craze in the UK is just ridiculous in my opinion, i guess when you have several options available to purchase a car like leasing, financing etc you wouldn't care so much about reliability, 2nd hand value and comfort. In my country we don't have such options so reliability is key when buying a luxury car for most except the extremely wealthy.
I just traded my GLE for the X5, the merc was the least reliable car I’ve ever had and the maintenance costs were bonkers. The X5 is like from the future compared to the GLE, due to the extras of course but in general, even with the airmatic suspension, the merc just wasn’t fun to drive or own. My last commute was 1.3 litres per 100km on the X5 so I’m pretty darn happy.
Quote from 11:00 min in...."I think I might be getting a bit old"....priceless comment! You truly make car reviews amusing to watch. Keep it up Matt ;)
Could not agree more! I test drove all three of these. I ended up getting the Lexus RX 450h and could not be happier. The GLE was awful, worse than the X5 in my opinion.
Coming from a man with a toyota as a profil picture, i feel some propaganda here.. On youtube we can all afford 200 000$ cars, you know that right? Yesterday i got an audi r8 plus with a benz gtr and bugatti chirron because i was bored
I'll admit, I'm a fan of Toyota and Lexus products, especially my 1999 Land Cruiser. If you don't believe I own an RX 450h...well, can't help you there. I was genuinely interested in the BMW X5 xDrive40e, but when I drove it (three times), I was only able to get 24 mpg! And reliability was a bit of a concern with such a new powertrain. www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-4th-gen-2016-present/802293-pics-of-your-4rx-right-now-28.html Check out post number 419. That's my car. Believe it or don't...but I'm enjoying it!
I'm waiting to see the new GLE. It will probably beat the RX on many accounts. But, one of my requirements was a hybrid for the quiet driving experience. The GLE 550e Plug-In is a quick beast, but I could not justify the price for similar equipment. And it just felt old with relativity hard leather. Some people like that, but not me. To each their own. Now, if I had all the money in the world and did not care about reliability, I'd jump for a Volvo XC90 T8. I really like that thing!
He doesn't have the RX, he said on his comment that he got the RX 450H while on the photos it shows the RX 350. I can smell the bullshit from you through the screen.
I wish the BMW X5 (w/ options that I want) was just cheaper. I ended up getting the Lexus RX 350 F Sport. I could not be happier but wish it had more power. Also, my mechanic told me to get a BMW if I wanted to see him more often. Lexus' reliability played a big part in our decision.
Your mechanic just doesn’t know how to operate a German engineered car lol police drive bmw in the uk roughly and aggressively chasing criminals . It’s a tough car that Iv always had without any issues.. range rovers are the ones with the problems not German cars
@@sammyg805 Are you mad fam? What does a reliability has to do with police? It's not like the officers themselves have to get them to mechanics lol it is owned and taken care of by the goverment. Totally different story when comparing it to the private owners.
Last week I picked up a 2016 RX450h F-Sport similar to the one on this review, what a car enough power, very quick when needed in Sport and Sport + mode but very economical 60mpg when driven slowly in traffic and around quiet roads in ECO mode, the best of both worlds... and it big enough for a family of four.

I bought it from Guildford Mercedes. Best family car without hesitation.... Note: DO NOT BUY 2.1 diesel. DO NOT buy NY A-B- or C class. i purchased CLA shooting brake. wore car ever gave it back to Guilford Mercedes after 4 month losing over £8k. thats how i found out its Renault engine on A,B and C class.... true Mercedes stars from E class and onwards
I am not sure why Mat states that the X5 is reaching the end of its life cycle. If I understand correctly the current X5 F15 was launched by the end of 2013, so it has less than three years. BMW models, in average, have a life cycle of seven years with a mild mid-cycle-refresh by the end of the fourth year. It is true that the current X5 uses the same platform as the previous X5 E70, but I think it was still considered as a brand new model when it was launched.
ThePacalino The X5 is surprisingly ending it's generation sooner this time. BMW wants to move it's cars to its next generation platform - CLAR. I'm sure they also want to update the design to be in line with the upcoming X7. In fact mules of the new X5 are already being tested and you can see pictures online. Allegedly coming in 2018, believe it's code name is G05.
Matt Watson, I love his reviews and helped me a lot in buying my current car , I think he'll be a great Topgear host , but of course without Matt Le blanc and the other one
I like his reviews first off.. . Now I currently have the 2017 Gle.... I have seen some pics of the new Gle coming... I think it looks too rounded... 2. Lexus Rx does make a statement but I do think it will look dated 5 years from now. Where the current Gle Mb will still look classy. 3. Interior of the current Gle is not the most fancy but the electronics do work well, I have not had any issues in nearly 2 years. 4. Bmw X5.... I just do not like the exterior of any of the Bmw Suvs........ they look like a tennis shoe type shape, very awkward.... So I am actually thinking of ordering a 2018 the way I want it before they end the current run... With all this said I think the Xc60 2019 is a looker and is under consideration
Out of the 3 I'd choose the Lexus, it's something different. You see an X5 or GLE at every corner. But the models I prefer from this Category are the RR Sport and Volvo XC90. However for the GLE I'd recommend to get the Comfort seats, because the Sportsseats you get with the AMG Sportpackage are rather uncomfortable!
Its Me you are the definition of stupid. The BMW X5 is very reliable and the seats are not rock hard in fact they are very very comfortable so stop hating you douchebag.
We (my family and I) have a 2016 GL350 Bluetec. It’s excellent both on road and off. If you’re ever going to take your luxury SUV off the road, buy a Mercedes. We love it! However, our lease is up soon and we are looking to replace it. The sad thing is, we don't get the 300/350d in the USA! Damn VW. What are some good GLS replacements and or alternatives? Can you please do a Q7, GLS, Range Rover, XC90 and the competition? Thanks! I love this channel, by the way.
If I have to choose ... Lexus above all without question. Most beautiful from inside and outside and last but not least .... it will not give me headache for car problems :))
I need help here. I am looking for a car with a lot of front seat space. I am taller and heavier than the presenter. I am starting seriously to hate the new model cars with massive center consoles. So far I have done test drive on Merc GLE (you feel like can of mackerel inside), Landrover Discovery (weird floor bumps pushing your legs under the seat), Lexus RX, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, VW Tuareg, BMW X5 (all with massive center console issues) and they all suck! My 1980 Golf 1 had more space on the front seat. What is wrong with manufacturers? I may need to buy used Merc ML. I can't stress how frustrated I am the last 2 weeks.
X5s have terrible reliability. How much does the the ride quality of the RX450h suffer in f sport trim? The f sport is drop dead gorgeous. Everything in the Lexus has a superior quality feel too
I dont know about Britain but these SUVs are the in the same price category in my country as the XC90 and Q7 so for me the xc90 and Q7 are direct competitor to these SUVs
They are way larger. Just because they're the same price range doesn't mean they're direct competitions. Just like the Volvo s90 is NOT rival to the e class because it's a large as an s class
I have driven all three, Lexus was best to drive but had horrific head room for tall people, so for me GLE is the best car in terms of space and drivability
While I had my IS in for service, they gave me an RX350 for a loaner and it was an absolute joy to drive. It drove really smoothly, quality was simply magnificent, and it had a lot of presence on the road. My only problem was imo, I felt like it needed more power. But then again I have sort of a heavy foot.
I would select the Lexus, because it's a smooth ride, less cost of maintenance, and after 5 years it will remain cool and never get as peace of junk with extera technology that I don't need!
As an American, I find it quite interesting that you can't buy a petrol powered non-hybrid 6 cylinder version of these in the U.K. It's either a 4 cylinder turbo, 4 cylinder hybrid, or a diesel. I understand that gas prices in the U.K. are more than the U.S, but it's still unfortunate. Are there any midsize or fullsize suv's in the U.K. that offer a petrol non-hybrid V6 as an option these days?
Yes! Lexus wins for me, it’s cost effective and repairs are reasonable. I had two BMWs (2008 5series and 2018 X3) and over time my pocket has screamed OUCH!
Actually these Germans can't even match the Lexus RX in terms of global sales volume. It's always been the front-runner and dominated the SUV segment. To be fair however, Lexus luxury sedans are still far from competitive among their German rivals in about every way.
+Newgenerationisbg Sometimes it is better to remain silent, because when you try to be smart, you can show yourself as a stupid person. Q5 is smaller, cheaper and it is in class with X3 , GLC .. Audi at the moment does not have real competitor for X5 and GLE.
Top Vehicles Wow, a simple "you're wrong" would have sufficed. I realize my mistake. Typing comments 20 minutes after you wake up isn't the best idea. But really, you have to call someone stupid to make your point?
@@lanceryderwilson8618 I’m talking about performance, tech, interior quality, style, handling etc. Reliability is unknown but most people lease new luxury cars so it’s not that important
reading through all the comments, it's funny how many ppl forgot "to each their own" principle. if everyone like the SAME car.....yah lets just leave it there folks. personally I own the exact same lexus model and by far it's my FAV! my best friend has the X5, and certainly im not a fan of it, but of course many of you bimmer- savvy ppl will strongly disagree, but that's all perfectly cool :) at the end, what personally got me sold on the lexus is the high reliability, which even this review mentioned. ultimately all three of these are awesome cars, just depends on what detailed features you prefer and of course you can't ignore the brand factor either.
So what's up with all the BMWs having crappy cabin sound insulation? Is it mainly because the RTF tyres are so loud, or just the overall quality too low for the price?
Good review - just shows that there is something good and bad about all and so much is a matter of personal taste. I compared all 3 of these when I leased new in 2010, 2013 and this year (just last month). In comparing everything between the 3, the RX 350 comes out on top for me. Especially true this time around since I decided to get most of the features - with the Lexus Safety system, I've already taken a few long trips and have spent little time with foot on accelerator/brake. Even as much as I like it, never thrilled with the graphic display (BMW is tops there). Also, I've noticed more of the body is plastic than previously. Still though, roomy comfortable, and nicely quiet from the outside. Because of this, I could be going 80 and almost feel like I'm moving slowly with the lack of outside sound. That's OK, the Big, 15 speaker Mark Levinson gives plenty of sound inside.
Daniel Flower The X5 is surprisingly ending it's generation sooner this time. BMW wants to move it's cars to its next generation platform - CLAR. It does need a big face-lift... like the last gen Mercedes c-class to the new Mercedes c-class. Or the last gen Mercedes E-class to the new Mercedes E-class. And with the S-class, and so on because ze Benz is 1,000,000 times better than the BMW and 100,000 times better than the Lexus
Wow, Lexus sounded almost too good with all mentioned and more bang for you buck! Best ground clearance by looks too. Hope it's not sponsored and wish I could get one. Some day. Or just for a little spin. Atleast in the back seat. Black in F-trim is lovely!
Q7 for me in this segment, although Q7 sits between GLE and GLS, it's priced similarly ($65K) to GLE V6 (71K) and X5 ($66) in Canada. Having said that, I'd end up going for Q7 if I'm leasing, and RX if I'm buying.
I love BMW's interiors it's the simple unfussy look and layout that appeals. The Mercedes is way too expensive and for me the Lexus is just damn ugly. If this was the kind of car i was looking for i'd take Mat's advice and go with the X5 3.0d. Great review too.
You wrote exactly how I feel. I just cannot get over Lexus ugliness. BMW is not aged inside. It is clean and classic. Very organized, effective and very German. If someone likes Toyota then go for Lexus. I don't have anything against it, but BMW is BMW.

The Lexus RX has been low key one of the best cars in the market for a while... and the resale value is second to none!
After watching this review and visiting my lexus dealer, I'm looking for the Lexus, hybrid. Agree with you. It's different and economical, it's also exempt from London forthcoming ULEZ extension.
The build quality in the Lexus looks so much better than the other two!
They are cheaper, more reliable and better interior for the price. People are starting to recognise this.
To me Lexus feels very flimsy compared to German cars. It's more reliable but the BMW and Mercedes feel much more solid to me.
stretch90 flimsy? Could u pls elaborate.
Adam Perkins you've never sat in it I guess
I just traded my GLE for the X5, the merc was the least reliable car I’ve ever had and the maintenance costs were bonkers. The X5 is like from the future compared to the GLE, due to the extras of course but in general, even with the airmatic suspension, the merc just wasn’t fun to drive or own. My last commute was 1.3 litres per 100km on the X5 so I’m pretty darn happy.
13 litres?
GLE ftw... Best practicality and best sound isolation and also relaxing to drive...
+Akshay Mahesh maybe you do have the car.. For the bmw, i agree with you but the merc is still on the lexus level
Great thing to see that majority of the comments are in favor of Lexus
Wow. I was going to dismiss this video thinking that it would be biased against the Lexus and would place it 3rd automatically. I’m surprised.
I will get my new 2017 RX 350 next month!
Bide Wu getting my 2019 BMW X5 ///M tomorrow
@@sandeepunni1663 Lexus RX better😏
green tea.. Nice one Mat!
Arigato gozaimasu!
It's the most luxurious and reliable. Lexus is for smart people
lexus looks stunning
You looks stunning
Please review the head-up display before the cupholders!
i just bought GLE 350d 4Matic AMG Night Ed Prem + 9G-Tronic Night Edition, Automatic. from carwow. Original price for this model was £62,615 with finance i paid £47,806. that is %23.7 discount AND %5 interest, its like buying mortgage very low interest rate. if you go to auto trader even it cost £5k MORE for 1 year old GLE.
I bought it from Guildford Mercedes. Best family car without hesitation....
Note: DO NOT BUY 2.1 diesel. (this is not Mercedes engine, its share engine with Renault with belt NOT CHAIN engine )
you ll want to buy 350d true Mercedes engine and a lot of power And very economical compare with others.
DO NOT buy NY A-B- or C class. i purchased CLA shooting brake. wore car ever gave it back to Guilford Mercedes after 4 month losing over £8k. thats how i found out its Renault engine on A,B and C class....
true Mercedes stars from E class and onwards
gle is the best for family
Sensible and honest review. I am wowed.
Where's the xc90 and the Q7
They are not in the same class as these. The XC90 and Q7 are Full Sized Luxury SUV's.
+Maaatsi price wise they are
But they r comparing the same segment not same price.
Indeed.. Volvo and Q7 are new suv very modern with high technology much better in my opinion as Lexus.. especially at design
+Jaehyun Park but if people were gonna buy one of these cars they would obviously consider the q7 and xc90
lexus the best ❤️❤️❤️
on Averaging the 3 Vehicles the hybrids versions are around £10.000 more , whats the point ???
BMW X5 all day and it's not outdated
john here it’s dull. Not technologically outdated.
DailyMeds I wouldn't care if it's dull as long as the materials an d build quality are high quality and the infotainment system is good
only now in 2022 I am checking these cars so maybe now I can buy one of them, actually I can't buy any of them anyway, just watching the Lexus : )
Hey I'm looking for the station wagons video that the Q7 is under, does anybody have a link for that?
Lexus haters are raging... Lexus owners keep rollin' with smile on their lips 🙏
Yeah because they cant see how the car looks on the outside!
Out of the 3 I'd choose the Lexus, it's something different. You see an X5 or GLE at every corner. But the models I prefer from this Category are the RR Sport and Volvo XC90. However for the GLE I'd recommend to get the Comfort seats, because the Sportsseats you get with the AMG Sportpackage are rather uncomfortable!
x5 any day
Thank you. Any day!
are we talking about it breaking down? then yeah x5 all day every day lol
The new X5s are actually pretty reliable. Consumer reports put them on their recommend list now.
Its Me you are the definition of stupid. The BMW X5 is very reliable and the seats are not rock hard in fact they are very very comfortable so stop hating you douchebag.
Its Me i would take the XC90 over these anyday. The GLE needs a new model and the X5... i have nothing to say
Everything in the Lexus has a superior quality feel too
Why would you not use the hybrid gle to compare with the other two cars which are both hybrids...
I test drove all three and went with the MB GLE, it was definitely the finest
Is the best and will continue to be the best. Ks funny people are chosen Toyota which has been branded and call it lexus over a mer and a bmw
Please do another comparison with the updated models :)
I dont know about Britain but these SUVs are the in the same price category in my country as the XC90 and Q7 so for me the xc90 and Q7 are direct competitor to these SUVs
Yes they're all in the same class, they just picked 3 for the test.
i think because the XC90 and the Q7 have a seven seats they excluded from the comparison.
They are way larger. Just because they're the same price range doesn't mean they're direct competitions. Just like the Volvo s90 is NOT rival to the e class because it's a large as an s class
How? X5 competes head to head with Q7. Both 5+2 seater mid size crossovers.
+warset q7 is considered full size. If you've seen them in real life you can tell the q7 looks way bigger
I have driven all three, Lexus was best to drive but had horrific head room for tall people, so for me GLE is the best car in terms of space and drivability
The Mercedes GLE Coupe is the best looking car in my opinion.
Lexus?
@@dragospahontu it´s his opinion calm down man !!
Matt, can you do a review on Lexus IS200t. Better still compare with C class, 3 Series and A4. Thanks
Sean Mangubat sane thing happened to me. I thought it was ok could get to 80+ on hwy pretty easily
Love this channel. Reviews of cars are ordered towards what buyers will actually use them for. Presenter is wonderful and witty.
GLE and X5 all day! The best in their category ! Their design is much simpler and nicer!
I would select the Lexus, because it's a smooth ride, less cost of maintenance, and after 5 years it will remain cool and never get as peace of junk with extera technology that I don't need!
Love the review! Also I agree with the verdict. 😀
Love the RX, but I wish it was a bit bigger. idk how lexus is going to fit 3 rows of seats in the refresh model
LEXUS!!
I own a 2015 x5 and it's fantastic . The Lexus I'm sure has great quality and the merc looks beautiful. Get what you like
I love Lexus, I'm sad that it's sales are falling drastically.
martinS S they are having a fall in sales because underneath it’s a Toyota
Aviation gamer rblx what is so wrong and ignorant.
The Lexus has a 3.5L V6 doesn't it? Mat kept mentioning 3.0L
this one is a hybrid dude
+Games BloX in Australia at least, the hybrid RX has the 3.5
Oh then Im not Sure..
Yep he got it wrong it's a 3.5 V6
Sv Nerd a hybrid means a mix of electric and petrol/Diesel engine. So it have battery and an engine. And in this case it is a 3.5 V6
Yes! Lexus wins for me, it’s cost effective and repairs are reasonable. I had two BMWs (2008 5series and 2018 X3) and over time my pocket has screamed OUCH!
lexus Rx f sport is amazing
is the x5, gle available in petrol engine
and still bmw and merc will sell 10 times more
Source?
+Joel Mammachen Not in the UK...
Lexus hater incoming. haha11
Actually these Germans can't even match the Lexus RX in terms of global sales volume. It's always been the front-runner and dominated the SUV segment. To be fair however, Lexus luxury sedans are still far from competitive among their German rivals in about every way.
+Joel Mammachen not even close in europe
3:10 wrong comparison... Compare Lexus lx 570 vs these two, then we see which cars is the toughest and has the tough road present
Why isn't Audi Q7 featured ?
Q7 is in class with GLS.
+Newgenerationisbg The Q5 is most definitely not in this class.
+Newgenerationisbg I can't see how you can make that mistake... You sound pretty stupid to me.
2:33 top build quality in the Merc with a bit of cheap plastic dangling under the glove box.
And remember the most important point : the Lexus is a lot more reliable.
that isn’t the most important thing. If we compare the new versions of these cars then the Lexus is in last place
@@kristians2704 how can you just predict that new germans are more reliable?
@@lanceryderwilson8618 I’m talking about performance, tech, interior quality, style, handling etc.
Reliability is unknown but most people lease new luxury cars so it’s not that important
@@kristians2704 It may not be important for you. For BUYERS who plan to keep their cars for a few years it obviously is important
reading through all the comments, it's funny how many ppl forgot "to each their own" principle. if everyone like the SAME car.....yah lets just leave it there folks. personally I own the exact same lexus model and by far it's my FAV! my best friend has the X5, and certainly im not a fan of it, but of course many of you bimmer- savvy ppl will strongly disagree, but that's all perfectly cool :) at the end, what personally got me sold on the lexus is the high reliability, which even this review mentioned. ultimately all three of these are awesome cars, just depends on what detailed features you prefer and of course you can't ignore the brand factor either.
Peugeot 2008 vs Suzuki Vitara vs Honda HR-V please
+Narayani Swetharanyam have you figured out how this channel works ;)
+carwow I am sorry but yes. Please do so
+carwow I have been observing for the past few head2head videos that this has been happening
+carwow I love these reviews. Why can't you do these reviews everyday?
So what's up with all the BMWs having crappy cabin sound insulation? Is it mainly because the RTF tyres are so loud, or just the overall quality too low for the price?
Lexus = reliability, Merc = more appealing , Bmw = Better interior. =)
you clearly didn't watch the video. BMW has the most dated and cheapest interior.
CY BMW not really for the interior, it's for their technology ONLY
Lexus = worst looking SUV in the world, Mercedes = Best interior, BMW = better infotainment system 👌🏻
For the look, lexus is the worst.
L Chen BMW for the interior because you don't find hard plastic in it like Mercedes
How can the BMW be "reaching the end of its lifecycle" when this 3rd generation model was launched less than 3 years ago?
Because of the interior! Outside it looks the best out of all of them
He probably means it needs a face-lift as it's nearly 3 years old. The interior especially looks so drab.
Daniel Flower The X5 is surprisingly ending it's generation sooner this time. BMW wants to move it's cars to its next generation platform - CLAR. I'm sure they also want to update the design to be in line with the upcoming X7. In fact mules of the new X5 are already being tested and you can see pictures online. Allegedly coming in 2018, believe it's code name is G05.
Black in F-trim is lovely!
buy merc for weekly use...
buy lexus for daily use...
Q7 for me in this segment, although Q7 sits between GLE and GLS, it's priced similarly ($65K) to GLE V6 (71K) and X5 ($66) in Canada. Having said that, I'd end up going for Q7 if I'm leasing, and RX if I'm buying.
The GLE is amazing, we have one and it is amazing
Germany 🇩🇪 BMW x5 EDrive4 M always the King 👑 ❤
X5 no doubt.
RX no doubt.
Hi, thank you from Thailand for your advice. I love you video. I was watching a lot of your reviews.
2019 Lexus RX 350 base model owner. And it is great. So I know that RX 450 and F Sport have to be outstanding
