    He is an absolute beauty, bud. I was waiting to see if yours would kick hairs. Mine was a terrible kicker for quite a while (she's finally calmed down a bit). Smooth rehouse, too...I love when they go well. :) Awesome video as always.

    I have a sling/teen ('bout 1.5-2.00' diagonal leg span) that escaped it's cage (my fault, didn't stick lid on tight), and was wandering 'round the house for few days. Came very quietly when I found him/her on bathroom wall...up at the ceiling! Gave me a good flick for good measure when I put him/her back in cage. Ha! Wish it could tell me all about its adventures around the house. Beauuuutiful species! Love them, and after seeing this I want more! (doesn't that always happen, its tarantula obsession...hits the best of us). Nice video!

    Mine use to kick hairs a lot too but she has calm down a lot, I don't like handling my tarantulas due to the stress factor even though all my species are new world ones, my craziest one is Acanthoscurria Geniculata she is always ready to give me a hard time, I don't know why a lot of people say that the Brazilian Giant White Knee is a good beginners choice, I would list it as an intermediate level. Love your videos bro, keep up the good work.

    Just got one of these today, and she's my first T ever! So excited, actually caught her drinking from her bowl today. Wish I could have gotten a pic, but I stood up too quick and she pulled her head back up super quick and then walked around for a bit... Maybe I'll get lucky a second time?

    • @dragonwithamonocle
      @dragonwithamonocle Рік тому

      Update: I got lucky a second - and third - time, even got one on video! MJ is confirmed female, and after a year is still doing fantastic and I believe coming up on her second molt with me. 100% agree that boehmi is a good beginner species. Despite the fearsome reputation of their hairs, after a year have not been tagged yet. I actually just fed her, and she's eating in her cage next to me as I write this. Good stuff.

    I just joined the T-keeping hobby after 1 year keeping reptiles and few scorpions. All my life feared spiders but Hapalopus sp. Colombia and B. Boehmei is my first two slings! I prefer to give my animals natural and bio-active enclosures with live plants, moss, cleanup crew, live water flow and all included.
    My question is: What size would you use for a Tarantula vivarium (Only enclosure size + full grown T)? Also, what would you add/recommend for plants/decoration for B. boehmei vivarium?
    Love this video of what to expect and general information for a newbie like me in a world of spiders.

I just wanted one. I purchased what was supposed to be a B Hamorii but she's anything but that. I really don't know for sure what species she is. No one seems to be for sure. Some say b bomeii, some b auratum, some b Amelia. I guess I'll find out in time. I love her no matter what species she is but I would love to know. I only buy from people I know now, smh. Thanks for the shout out, Alex.
    I have a question regarding handling. Is it possible to get a T accustomed to handling by doing so from an early age? Like, gentle handling, where you let the spider walk on your hand. I ask because I know my daughter, and she's a hands-on kid. I need to know if this is a possibility, or if she needs to have it reinforced that handling is a no-no. Is there a particular age range (for owners) that's better for starting? She'll be 7 soon.

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  5 років тому +2

      T’s do not get accustomed to handling. They are very primitive creatures and don’t have that in them. Many are tolerant of it but it varies from specimen to specimen and species to species. Handling is considered a no-no in the hobby but honestly it’s difficult not to. The main thing is to be sure the T is not behaving defensively and allow the T to walk onto you and not really force the issue. Most T’s aren’t really wanting to bite and would rather just walk around and attempt to get away from you. You just basically guide their movements by allowing them to walk from hand to hand.
      As far as age. I think seven is a great age to start. Just be sure your child is not going to have a freak out moment and fling the T. I allow some of my students to handle T’s in my classroom but I always hold their hand and reassure them that if they feel anyway in the least bit uncomfortable I’ll remove the T immediately. Once they relax and see that they aren’t going to get bitten then I release and let them free-handle.

      My juveniles are far more aggressive at their age than fully grown/adult. They go through phases where I wouldn't handle them, including when they are juveniles they attack anything. This includes docile species such as my Pink Toe and Brachypelma Boehmei. I think when they are growing up they will do anything to survive and to get bigger.
