      I see it a lot with children with inverts in Australia. Its irritating as hell. They're pets you don't touch, you feed and watch. They're also so minimalist, so WHY people toss them aside, IDK.

    A pet hole, that's hilarious! Reminds me how, in the snake hobby, having a ball python is called "having a pet rock."

      My response to coworkers about keeping tarantulas is that “my tarantulas have never tried to lick them selves and then lick my face. How many times has your dog tried to lick himself and then your face?”

    Thanks for posting! I live in Florida and am excited to own my first tarantula! I’ve literally watched thousands of videos from great tarantula owners and ordered a book last night about tarantula care. I’d like to get a Chaco Golden Knee to start out with. After I read a bit more about them I’ll start purchasing the materials I’ll need to care for it and THEN it’s shopping time!

    I really am considering an Obt. I’ve never had tarantulas but I had scorpions. I personally find them beautiful & would enjoy a challenge of a pet. I will keep researching it. I have no desire to handle it. I know better from a scorpion that got away from me never to be found. Ty for the awesome video. It truly helped.

    It's all true, especially DO YOUR HOMEWORK! You can't go wrong if you do. The funny thing is that when you don't own a Tarantula doing the research can be bewildering because there are so many different Tarantulas with their own requirements and so many conflicting statements, particularly on forums. There's always an argument happening, and if you're new it is really confusing! I was dizzied and dazed after a couple of weeks so I said "just buy the damn Tarantula, to hell with this" and I now have 12, all of which are happy and healthy.
    And yep, they DO NOT WANT TO KNOW YOU! They don't hate you either, they're just terrified of the behemoth that is human. In all honesty none of mine get stressed out at my presence anymore and go about their day-to-day activities regardless of what I'm doing, and that's cool.

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  6 років тому +1

      You're absolutely right about that. I don't really like going to forums because, like you said, there's always an argument going on. Most of mine are the same way, about not getting stressed out at my presence, but I do have a few skittish ones that will dart into their hides as soon as I approach. Experience is always the best teacher. :)

    • @timothycurtis4744
      @timothycurtis4744 6 років тому

      Tarantula Haven I think it’s caused by there not being a “right way” all the time, so when you have keepers who do things differently but successfully, the debates begin.
      Once you’ve got the experience under your belt it’s so much easier to learn and grow from there and as you say, experience is what it’s all about!
      I think they’re all capable of skittish behaviour no matter how used to your disturbances they are xD just this morning my C Darlingi, who usually doesn’t react to my presence at all, went walking back into her burrow as if to say “I’m not ready for this today!” Lol

    Another thing to consider is a tarantula doesn't require your constant attention or interaction. Of course, do your research with any pet, it's why dogs and other pets end up in shelters. Because people realize they don't have the time or effort to take care of it

    1. Mostly because of trying to get rid of my fear of spiders, but I also think that tarantulas are actually a bit of a fascination.
    2. I'm a little squeamish. I can tolerate a lot, but seeing a bunch of white fly larvae crawling around in a box of cat food meat will make most people squeamish.
    3. Colorful, especially with my favorite colors Blue and Green.
    4. Clear plastic box, at least while they are small. Maybe try to build my own enclosure and give Petko, a run for his money.
    5. Yes, although I learn better with experience. Now, where's the next YT-video about tarantula care?

    Question, I have been building up to getting my first few tarantulas. But have been debating on waiting to go to a local expo in Portland, or to get them in a couple weeks, or order online. What do you think?

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  Рік тому

      If you buy from the expo you are saving yourself shipping and you get to see the animal before purchase. Plus you may be helping local vendors. Ordering online is great because you usually have more variety to choose from but you always have a risk in shipping and the extra expense of it. Personally I would try the expo first and if I don’t see what I like I would order online. 🤓🕷

    Whaaaah in British Columbia, Canada I was told we can't breed cockroaches.(does anyone know otherwise?) 😢😢 So i have to use and gut load my crickets before feeding days ... And they are so hard to keep alive. Or maybe they just die fast? I have proper cricket keepers, food, adequate moisture etc. But still after a month my stock dies by half. What's happening? What am I doing wrong? Can anyone offer advice?

    Well this video was made for folks like me. I've decided and done the research on the 2 trantualas I want to buy. For my 1st pet Ts. Because my wife has agreed to let me get 2 and only 2..hahahaha!!. I just got in the enclosures. One for a arboreal and one for terrestrial. Very nice glass enclosures for my soon to be Ts. But I recently watched a enclosure video while I was doing some research. "What to do when your pet trantula escape". And they mentioned some thing I've never heard of. And threw me for a loop..after Doing my months of research. Maybe you can answer this question with your expertise. Do trantulas chew threw the metal mesh tops on alot of the tarantula enclosures to escape??? Both of my enclosures have thick trim tops but the middle is like a wire mesh. Just not sure If that is accurate about them chewing threw. Any info would be helpful and much appreciated. One of the Ts I will be getting is a old world and I cant allow it to get out. So i plan to make sure to keep it safe and inside its enclosure...:) thank you very much for your videos and tips. Keep up the good work.

      Thank you for the kind comment. In answer to your question, yes tarantulas can chew through metal screen but not a stronger metal mesh. Brachypelma and Tliltocatl seem to be the worst at doing this. If you catch your tarantula doing a lot of wandering and possibly testing the screen, then I would recommend switching it out to a plexiglass top or some other more durable material. They won't do it all at once but they will work at it so be observant. Also, if you have an escapee the best thing to do is to look around the room. They usually don't venture too far and will find a nice dark spot to hide in. I've had 2 Pumpkin patch escape recently and I thought I would never find them. I found them both snuggled by my camera bag that was sitting on the floor near where they escaped. If it's an arboreal then look high. Most people find them crawling along the wall close to the ceiling or in the corner of a room. They also like to hide in corners and in curtains or hanging clothing so be careful.

    I'm considering getting one after watching numerous videos like this even though I'm scared of spiders we find in our houses here in 🇬🇧 ts don't scare me so much for some weird reason?!... but I don't know what type r what size/age to get or what I can house it in that's not expensive as I can't afford some expensive enclosure.

    Do you think a Lasiodora Parahybana is a good beginner tarantula? I've been thinking about it for some time and it seems like a good one to start with, but I'd like to hear from someone who actually keeps T's.

      Mysterious Firefly yes I would. They are fast growing and hardy. They get very large. They are not the most handleable of tarantulas. Very food aggressive and prone to kicking hairs. Some people can have pretty bad reactions to their hairs. There are exceptions to the norm however and I have seen some LPs that are pretty docile. They’re usually always out and eager to eat.

    Cheat answer for new player
    1. Yes I'm aware about their harming potential and willing to take the risk so I can join all the fun.
    2. I'm not scared of holding mealworm & crickets with tweezer. I've found that I could buy them for small amount of number from this shop [find it yourself].
    3. I'll get a new world. Ezpz.
    4. For the enclosure I'm getting several plastic container with holes already being made by the seller. Also got some eco Earth and turns out they're all cheap and plenty. I also got some soft bristle brush and some tweezer. This should be a great start for me to learn from the very bottom.
    5. I know how to search "bracypelma smithi caresheet, bracypelma smithi sling care" on Google and already doing it right now BEFORE I'm buying one.
