- In this video I explain how to make dark, mysterious bass melodies like you find in Alex Niggeman's "Materium" track. You'll see the role of the arpeggiator and secret hack to make Ableton's stock arp play dotted eight notes 😂

Hi Underdog, is there a tutorial for the exact drumbeat in this video? Would relly like to learn this, thank you Underdog
"Nothing more satisfying than a bit of calculation in the middle of your music making session " 😂
This is actually exactly how I calculate compression times... The 120bpm 250ms 1/8th and 125ms 1/16th calculations are burned into my brain
lol
THE BEST ELECTRONIC MUSIC TEACHER
It is... I ve learn so much already. Thank you for your help, I'll keep following
Bro.. I can’t even express how good it feels to watch your tutorials after having watched fuzzy trap tutorials for half a year
Tell me about it. I unfortunately paid for PLM and I wish I could give that money to Underdog. I will be joining his patreon because I feel guilty for the 1-excellent quality of tutorials 2-the way Oscar teaches things. It is f-ing amazing. Oscar, you're the best. PS will be comparing PLM Vs Underdog on Reddit.
hahahha yeah man I completely agree
Dipped my toes in techno production 8 months ago and gave it up when my tracks sounded like dog shit, discovered your videos and have been slowly getting back into it and feeling inspired. Highly undervalued channel right here, your videos are rich with knowledge, easy to understand and comprehend, and straight to the point. Best of luck with your success man, absolutely loving these tutorials
Best ableton channel on YT!
This and EDM Tips are the best music school channels on YT. IMO 👍
Hey man, I cant thank you enough for these videos. Getting into electronic music making and learning ableton always felt like a brick wall until I found your videos. Music making has always been so stressful and theres so many roadblocks, but when I see one of your videos it makes me feel like I can do anything. I really appreciate your stuff.
Makes me really happy to read this :) 💚
the information given in this video is surprisingly rich, comprehensible and on the mark! I have been watching tutorials for exactly 2 years, never saw someone else like this man who enlightens me every time I watch!!!
I think what makes your teaching so good in addition to the way you explain complex stuff is your good musical taste.
Most comprehensive teacher I came across so far. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience!
He was so careful how to pronounce his name that he called him AXEL Niggeman 😂
Oh man 😅
yeah woof, the first glance at the title had my heart racing.
Your videos are great. I love that you break down complex ideas into simple solutions.
Awesome. Love your work, clear & concise tutorials with out getting bogged down in unnecessary details.
I've been eating up production tutorials the last while and your videos are some of the best I've come across.
Looking forward to your next ones!
Love from Ireland. 💚
i am really impressed about your coolness, when it comes to use maths "in the middle of a (the) creative process" - very funny! *clap* - and the rest is also very useful, even for non ableton users - because it's depending on principles and concepts not on DAWs (it helps for cubase at least)
super informative, great pacing, and clear explanation. Thanks for sharing! :)
I don't even like electronic, house, or techno, but, there are definitely production techniques I love from these electronic genres, which i can implement into my metal mixes, seeing as Mick Gordon and his unique sound scape has inspired me
Really awesome tutorials and way of teaching. Definitely a must to subscribe. Thanks 😊
This was something much needed by me. Thank you very much!
Rock solid tutorial. Calculation especially. 🙌🏼
Thank you
you're the best techno teacher on you tube. really enjoying your content and im now seaching for your school's website
Really appreciate these videos. I use Reason 10 and jam live on the Digitone occasionally, and I find these tutorials help me get inspiration for new ideas. So much in this genre is about the timbre and rhythm of the sounds. Melody is typically secondary.
You’re an excellent teacher! So clear and at the same fast enough to keep me interested as an experienced producer. I’m watching your stuff to go back to the basis and every time I think oh yeah I totally forgot about this. Thanks!
Just love this channel ❤️
This channel never stop to amaze me whit it's excellence, best!!
You R the best teacher who explains simply and clearly!
Love both of these tracks. Definitely gonna try these techniques
Thanks I'm slowly picking it up. Your a good teacher!!
The music teacher that I love most. Thank you so much for your insights 👋
love your tutorials really helpful
Keep going man! I recently discovered your videos and I’m already a fan 🤘🏻 greetings from 🇲🇽
Ahh, great to see people from MX :D Cheers!
Absolutel gold, these videos could not be more helpful.
This is my favorite track ever in this genre.... Thank you so much. Now I know how to recreate it
Great content! Loved the video on subtle modulations as well - it's actually often the small things that can make a huge difference and just showing midi placement like in this video to help guide making melodies and rhythms is super great tut material 👌 keep it coming, got a solid follower here
Cheers Andre! Really thoughtful feedback, much appreciated!
Impeccable, simple et efficace, merci !
Congratulations for sharing this knowledge.
Some cool new ideas to try out. Thank you!
Super Dope!!! I’m definitely gonna mess around with these techniques on my next project. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I don't have Ableton, because I'm DAWless. But this is still my go-to channel & when I've got some cash I'm going to sign up for a class.
The best tutorials on UA-cam 🙌
Thanks! I would love to watch some more videos on how to write interesting basslines, especially incorporating variations throughout a track.
This tutorial is awesome ! Powerful result in very few steps will try this out :D
Definitely do it, and share the result!
Insanely useful, thanks!
My last dance before Covid was Richie Hawtin and Alex Niggeman ❣️
Awesome video, awesome channel, thank you so much
I started experimenting with melodic/moving/walking bass-lines a while back. Now it’s everything I do in my music. I tried applying static bass-lines from time to time but it just didn’t sound as good. It sounded way to dull and robotic. I encourage everyone to experiment with melodic basslines. It really is a gamechanger that will take your music to new levels
Very good tutorial!
As great as maths is, if you select an area in the timeline Ableton will tell you how many milliseconds it is in the bottom left.
😯 I cant believe I never thought of this. Genius.
dude, what the hell, thats amazing!
huh? where?
@@jedho1972 In the status bar. Very bottom of the screen.
there is a max for life called 'Delay Time Calculator' That does all this calculations for you and sync with the tempo of your track. Highly recommended! Good videos been wqatching some of your tutorials. New suscriber :)
Ableton does it for you. Just select an area in the timeline. It will tell you how many ms in the bottom left.
Hey man, big thanks for your channel, peace!
Great tips, record midi to new track to create individual notes was a great tip too!
Your channel is really crazy man!!!! Thanks!
Cheers Guillaume! I hope it reaches as many people as possible soon 😁
Great content thanks
you can also highlight an area and it will show the milliseconds in the bottom left
Great teacher!
Clever done...thx 🎼
heb je post op reddit gezien. je videos zijn erg fijn en duidelijk. thanks!
Dankjewel Emily 😁
Nice, thank you.
Cool tip to calculate note length, will be useful to ADR and compressor, etc :)
Excellent tutorial
Cheers, I aim to please 💛
Nice!
V good again. Thank you
Awesome stuff again
Thanks Brainy 💕
Ohhhh yeeees ! 🔥
Awesome👍🙏🖖
Great man thks
Great video 👍😊
Thanks Antoine!
Excellent as usuel
Je me couche moins bête.
epic!!
Looked down... looked back up at 1:57 and realized you were wearing your best Gru outfit. Bearded Gru.
EXACTLY hahaha
"Nothing better than a little bit of calculation in the middle of music making session" 😂😂😂
Oscar the BEST!
Ok but can we appreciate the transition from the intro where he moves his hands upward?
The 'configure' button!!?? Wowzie! Finally! Eindelijk de manier om vst's te manipuleren! Dikke merc! ;-)..Ik ben 'stoem' geweest! ;-)
Next time I'll visit Brussels... I'll invite you to have a drink..or to ..or many! :-) and discus music in generale...Or if you are in Hasselt??
This drum beat is gold. Great if you could share what kit you are using for it.
thanks
Great video, can't for the life of me understand why anyone would hit "thumbs down".
It's a mystery we'll never solve 🙃
Awesome videos bro! Do you think you are gonna make tutorials on other genres too at some point?
I'm open to the idea, I just teach what I know for now and dont want to overstep my boundaries with genres I have little history with:) which are you hoping for in particular?
@@OscarUnderdog Hey, sorry for the late reply but yeah totally understandable :) Having some house related stuff would be awesome but its totally cool if you are more of a techno guy :)
Distance, by Mark Reeve is an excellent example of this
Every single afterlife producer out there :D
Diva is sooo good
amazing videos. you are what i need for my techno production. the only problem is im on fl studio :c
Am I the only one who thinks that the Gru outfit suits you very well?
😁🙏
3/16th note = 1 LOVE
🖤
Who knew Gru is producing techno?
Arpeggiator is fine, but just writing the melody straight away in piano-roll cant be that hard either. That way you can bypass the calculations.
And ofc excellent video, as always. Keep inspiring us man \m/
woow ! learnd a lot from you - where can i take online class with you?
hi i have a question for you do you make formation in French? tks a lot for yours tuto help me a lot Peace
Another top tutorial, thank you. Any chance of a peak at the drums?
more video vst Diva!
In the arrangement review, if you zoom enough to see 16th notes then select a sixteenth note segment, the bottom of the window will display the time in milliseconds for a 16th note at that tempo. So you don't need to use your calculator. 😉
Hi! Where can I get that Diva preset? Thank you so much!
👌🏻
🤘
ableton 11 has 1/3 arppegio :)
Reste is a monster of a tune
Can we see a Ben Klock Subzero bassline??
Really nice clap!!
Where can I find it? :)
