5 steps to make pulsating techno like Paula Temple or Surgeon
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 чер 2024
- In this video we make an organic, pulsating techno beat in Ableton Live. You'll recognise this style of techno from artists like Paula Temple, Surgeon, Oscar Mulero, and other techno artists who get way more creative than the traditional 4 kick drums per bar.
The secret sauce will consist of:
- Making a simple drum rhythm with dry drums
- Using delays to add pulsating secondary rhythms
- Saturating the heck out of it
- Making sure it's got stereo width
- Resampling to audio to regain full control
It's quite a tangle of parallel processing, so prepare to see quite how deep Ableton's parallel processing capabilities stretch!

Thx...useful info....I'm 70 y.o. and producing Organismic Techno and dark dubstep- never to old to learn 🎼
Ace!
Cool:) keep rocking
You're a badass!!! So great that you're still growing, I know so many dudes in their 40 who basically just stick to what they've always done. You're an inspiration.
@@olleko5034 ......thx a lot bro' 🎼
Great, very very cool this comment, l'm 50 Y.o. best regards 🐼🐼🐼🐼🐼
you said "arpeggiator" and immediately i had jean michel jarre from 1982 in my head. that man defined my childhood. awesome tutorial!
I’ve never really considered trying to produce techno before, but after watching your tutorials, I’m inspired to give it a go. You have a gift, being able to get across the techniques and, more importantly, the ‘why’ behind them so clearly and concisely. Excellent tutorial, thank you.
the same happened to me, i haven't produced any techno since 2016 and after watching this tutorials im inspired again to go back to techno, very, very cool.
trick is, LEVEL! if youve never made Techno ...maybe you havnt lived it??? im assuming. So my suggestion to 'understand' would be to approach it like a techno/house producer. Start with your KICK library....preview til one 'Feels' right...4/4 Pattern....Monitor at a decent level so you can Feel it (at least in the beginning. No rules , Play , build build build, play (delay/verb etc), build , play, rinse repeat. ....a big step is to step away, forget what you made (20min or so) then come back with a pad of paper / critical listen / refine .....house and techno is a feeling more so than many others. Ride it
Thank you so much for introducing me to Paula, her art is mesmerizing and captivating!
That pattern is the ostinato of Baiao, a brazilian music genre.
Just watched this vid on that: ua-cam.com/video/Ft7N8KD8lGQ/v-deo.html

Awesome, thanks
Love this topic. not many people cover this type of techno
Nice.
Agreed. I love Go Hiyama
You're a great teacher man, please keep the videos coming, you'll continue to grow.
OK then, deal 😁
@@OscarUnderdog piggybacking on this guy’s comment to strongly agree. This may be the best “production tips” channel out there; if merit counts you will get big dude. 👌💪
Probably one of my favorite beats of hers. Developer too. He has some similar beats.
bro this whole thing of "this is what we gonna do" bang at the start of the video, is fuckin epic!
you've gone from "almost a thousand" subscribers to 128K in a single year. that alone tells how amazing is your channel!
He's over 200K now... Amazing channel indeed... with an amazing person behind it...🙏 I'll definitely get some of his courses. Love his teaching style. 👍👏
Paused at 2:00 mins to double check the subscriber count, can't believe that. Not been following you long myself, but I thought I had been missing out and everyone else was winning. Gem of a channel, can't believe how much info is given out for FREEEEE. Great work man.
Paula Temple is a beast, just daring to go near her music makes you one too. Real nice tutorial.
"On our way to 1000 subscribers". Almost 100k as of today, yussssss. Congrats! One of my favorite channel discoveries this year.
Best teacher so fare you are. I think this is what my aktuell track need's. It lacks breadth. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the vid - I knew Paula a few years ago - took my Vermona DRM1 Mk3 round for her to have a play with... x
Best techno tutorials on the website.
This channel is really damn good. No BS just real useful advice. Been at it a long time and always learn something new from your videos
I appreciate that!
love this video - when youtubers say 'smash that like' i always think why would I do that?? after watching this video i literally punched the like & sub button
I am learning a lot from you and I will thank all my life to Underdog ;)
Thanks Oscar 😁🤘
As mentioned before: "not many people cover this type of techno". And it's a brilliant tutorial! Parallel processing explained how it should be. Btw, it's a very good chain, no lame stuff. In my humble opinion, Underdog demonstrates a deep understanding of audio processing. Thnx for another tut. from Kiev, Ukraine.
best techno tutorial ever
The bell's arpeggio at the end instantly beamed me back to 1995.
Holy moly this channel had high quality content before there were even 1000 subscribers?
I really appreciate how frequently you show the in progress sounds
I have a long road as a musician, and your tutorials give me cues about things I wouldnt have had considered before. Thanks very much!
Paula's deathvox isnt even a track, its a gigantic monsterous energy
Your videos are great. Clear, concise, and super-informative.
Thanks a lot. Surprisingly so many deep details, and just for free. Well built up video and music structures. Congrats!
oscar you are one of my top 3 techno teacher on youtube. Ansome is my fav at doing techno not4 on the floor
Cheers Felix 😁✌ Are the others Yalcin and Julien by any chance?
i will likely never use this type of drum processing, yet i still enjoyed this
that RS logo as backdrop is perfect for Oscar. it was one of my fav firm back in the early 90ies, still it is today. Grande Oscar the Underdog, great musician and teacher, and that is not an evryday thing. I have you and aynil as the absolute best two.
keep it coming all day long fratello!
Everything about your videos is highly engaging, always come away with genuinely more knowledge than I went in with that is ACTUALLY helpful. Love your style my guy. Liked and subscribed, getting to 1000 should be easy
This is the kind of comment I do this for 💪🙏❤
@@OscarUnderdog did you mean to say 100,000 subs? or did you really bump 79,000 subs in a month!?
@@GrizzlyWang It's been a wild ride, let me tell you :) April/May particularly.

Very good explained with so many detailed tricks. Thank you.
Really enjoyed this tutorial. I appreciate how you explain the fundamentals along with more intermediate and advanced techniques while giving each the time it deserves. Great from building blocks to final touches
Yessss, glad it resonates!
Yep, great for beginners and advanced. I'm barely using Ableton Live (mainly doing DAWless) and these videos are so useful to me.
Wow! This is the tutorial I was looking for in the last year and a half! ;This techno style, I couldn’t find anywhere :pYour explanations are very clear you are very good at showing how to do it! Some of the best tutorials I have watched, I am not very into techno producing I’m more into psychedelic trance, however your videos are very detailed and can be used in other generes as well, keep it going
Thanks for the kind words! 😌🤘
Deathvox is such a unique and intense song. I can't believe you made a whole video dissecting it, awesome!
This video was great but honestly learning about Paula Temple today was the best part holy shit
Great tutorial. Learnt a lot!
Ableton the Mother of all DAW's

Excellent. I've watched a few of these now and they're so good - clear explanations with a knowing attitude; what else do you want?
This was soooo good!
OMG I got it to resonate- you're a God
Great tutorial thanks for all the tips,
I think dry and wet chains finally clicked for me. Thanks a lot! Definitely gonna put this into practice now
There's an edit or glitch from about 8:25, and no matter how many times i go back over this i can't quite follow where we are. BUT, given how many uploads of yours i've now watched, i think all credit is due to you that this is the first problem i've had following something!!
Very educational (my DAW is studio one, and I can easily follow along) THX 4 the vid.
Oscar , bedankt om al deze geheimen prijs te geven👍
Graag gedaan 😁
And the Oscar for best electronic music education videos goes to...

Kudos to you Oscar !
Hope to hear the result man! The world needs more original views on techno like that! :)
@@OscarUnderdog i wonder, how did you accumulate all this know-how? self-educated? some course? school? what was your way up to this point if i may ask
@@balintbarcsak4732 Just years and years of trial and error, reading everything I can, watching everything I can. I still have so much to learn, but hope to pass on some things along the way... :)
@@OscarUnderdog you most certainly do, i can only parrot others, you're a great great teacher. good luck!
this is a really amazing tutorial!
Hey thanks :D
Amazing
..love it..Thank you
cool!! thank you!! muchas gracias!!
Was at a master class by Paula Temple,it was amazing to see up close how she works…. The master class was at Soma Skool Shoogle Studios in Glasgow, now known as suBSine Accademy by Simon Stokes aka Petrichor…. An absolute master with Ableton and music production in general 👌🏻….. loving your channel btw 🔈👏🏻
Brilliant!!
Your delay groove thing was giving me major Thom Yorke vibes.
killer videos... keep them coming
Sounds wicked mate, great video and easy to understand :)
Thanks Macmacd 😁
In this drum main pattern sounds sound very close to a rhythm called Xote or Chote (pronounced, Shot with an "ee" in the end) from north of Brazil...
Nice I’ve been mostly producing on hardware but recently started learning ableton during my holiday break very helpful thanks!
Happy to help!
Use both. Hybrid ftw. Hardware synths with software effects
@@jetpacksnake9741 and Ableton as sequencer..
Very usefull !! thanks ! Greetings from Londerzeel ( BE ) =)
Thanks this was cool. Would be good to see more on the parallel processing and 3 band split.
Great Oscar👍👌
This is so good, loads of good ideas to explore. I don't have Ableton or DAW but same ideas translate to simpler setup. OP-Z get to work!! 🔨
Nice one!!!
Love the tutorials man. Would love to see a breakdown of one of VRIL's tracks as he's someone whos pretty secretive about his process. Specifically the ones like Haus or Torus XXXII. Keep them coming!
Amazing channel!!!
Great!
Levelling up, hoping you clock 1000 subs before Feb!
Thanks man, fingers crossed 😁
Good stuff man!
50K in 5 months....!!!
@@scality4309 THATS OUR BOY! 🙌🏼
100 k now !
Lovely :)
man you are good.
hooked!
Amazing video, Oscar. Would you need to add a rumble effect or baseline to this or would there be enough low end on its own?
Listen to Alon Mors "Lands Of Delight" or Rob Clouths "Zero Point" for some extreme creativity in technoid music, both regarding arrangement and beat structures.. this stuff is brutal.
you're such a good instructor ! @___@
I can't believe these classes are free.
I genuinely believe knowledge should be available as freely as possible, and the value of school education is in dialogue, perspectives & personal coaching. 🙏
Dang that distortion layer is sexy. Nice.
Really love this video. One question. For the 3 band split section, did you simply add another effect rack and split it into 3 chains or is there another plugin for it?
Great vid! Did you add the distortion chain to the groove chain or add it to the kick on the drum rack? I take it the clean chain remains the same throughout and you are adding more chains to the groove chain?
wait. what did i just watch? i havent learnt this mutch in this short time ever in my life before. thanks.
Thank you! Excellent tutorial! Please break down Mike Parker, Judas - type of tracks :)
I'm really enjoying you production tips Oscar. I was wondering if you thought the Paula Temple track had the kick sent off to a return with some side chained techno reverb added to the kick group as well. Her track has the hugeness that reverb brings to my ears. Great work man keep it up.
Great intuition! I recall seeing a Paula Temple masterclass at a conference a long time ago, and her Ableton template did have a huge number of return channels with creative reverb routings all over. I didn't fully understand it at the time, but I think that might match what you're thinking!
@@OscarUnderdog I like to make this broken beat Techno and like to add some reverb in the too to give it that weight a bit of sub from operator too to give it some sub frequency weight in between the delays or infill kicks. Not to say thats the right way to do things if there is a right way to do things in techno.
Some really nice tips on spiting the frequencys to fill up the sound in your tutorial. I'll be playing around with that for sure.
