When I started out I used to obsess over making things super high quality, and I kind of fell out of love with producing because it made it really hard to be spontaneous and creative. Coming back to electronic music years later, I've really enjoyed learning from high-profile producers who value creating a 'vibe' above anything else - like you said, you don't need the best tools before you can start making art. Great video - thanks Oscar!
Fred’s “bad” microphone thing is genius. He’s making bangers out of the infinite number of rough ideas we all have in our voice memos. And Ai won’t be able to replicate that intimacy as easily.
The fading in and out on the filter is very similar to the idea, in classical music, of making sure the music is breathing. That it feels like it's being sung from a human, the way humans have to take breaths while singing.
Underdog, I think people are loving this video because you mostly treat it like a DJ set. By teaching in real time with the beat looping, the tutorial is so much more enjoyable. I hate production videos that never drop the beat. Get it dude!
You are the best electronic music education channel on UA-cam. The way you break things down is so phenomenal, where others will jump right into high level terminology that I often struggle to grasp.
Hi Oscar. I would like to express my gratitude to You. You're doing a great job sharing invaluable knowledge with us. I'm going through a difficult period in my life right now - I'm suffering from depression, which makes my own mind slowly kill me. Your videos really helps me to overcome this. You are literally saving my life - thank You for that. I wish You a successful and stable growth of your channel and your musical projects. And most importantly - stay producing!)
Cosmic Buddy, I know the feeling..... I'm glad that you are here, with all of us !!!! If you ever need someone to "text with", you can text-talk with me. We ALL need "someone"..... I'll be here if you need to unpack some hard-life...... 💛
I suffer from depression too, or used to. One thing that helped me was reading the first chapter of Ekhart Tolle's 'Power of Now.' This really had a huge positive effect on my mind, like a sudden rewiring, very bizarre. I then read the book again twice and make use of some of the philosophy within. This might not work for all, but I thought that I'd share it with you, in the hope that you'll at least give it a try. It's not a huge chapter, and is easy to understand. The rest of the book is a little more complex but still useful and insightful. Hope you can find a way to overcome your troubles... I too find creating music absolutely awesome and this channel really can get me on the right frame of mind first thing in the morning when I am seeking ideas and inspiration for a new track I am making. All the best... if you decide to try my suggestion, then I'm happy to chat through with you any questions you might have. Give it a go, it might be really helpful like it was for me. ;-)
@@paultorbert6929 Thank you for such a warm words, but unfortunately Big Brother found my words 'unacceptable'. Can we share our contacts for more privacy in that dialogue?
I would recommend checking out Dr. Rangan Chatterjee's podcast on here, in regards to stress, depression, mindset, lifestyle, diet, etc. He recently had Rick Rubin as a guest on the show...
I agree with your point about low quality vs. high quality being just "a vibe". Some of my favorite songs I've ever made or worked on had some of the elements or even the main element (melody or lead vocal) start off from a low quality place and then processed to be beautiful, or sometimes even just pasted into the track candid as a sample or element and its just a reminder that not every work of art has to be this big bold and brash piece. Sometimes things can be simple, rough around the edges, and still be pretty and beautiful.
Terrific video! Super detailed and beautifully explained! Thanks man. Fred Again is really a special kind of tea, so i’m really happy that you could extract and explain his techniques in clearly understandable ways. Thanks! ❤️
The "dropstep" (I don't know either how to call it), can be very powerful. I like to skip the kick (alone or with other elements) on the first beat, it gives the feeling that the floor is suddenly falling (la terre se dérobe sous tes pieds)... It works even better on slower tempo ! Another alternative is to leave only the kick (and a shortened bass), and to bring everything back together on the next snare (3rd beat usually). Thanks again for the great content, and for the joy and enthusiasm you always share !
Oscar The Great🔥🔥🔥 my team and I on a mission to introduce melodic techno in South Africa but with slow tempo ranging from 110-114bpm.. as South Africans have slow, rhythimic taste in music..🤣 its always and honour watching your videos.. God bless your channel to grow bigger and bigger🤜🏿
Oscar, also jumping in here to share my gratitude for you. Your material and lessons are always increíble, and we all very much appreciate your thoroughness, attention to detail, and love for the music. You are the best production teacher out there. Keep it up.
I've learnt a lot from this tutorial. Brilliant, thanks. Just getting back to working on my tune after a trip back to UK and Poland and being affected by Covid and then the flu for a month, which rendered me very unproductive. This really gives me some ideas, especially the filtering and vocal part for my new tune. Awesome!
Super well done video, I've seen quite a few Fred again inspired vids and this still had some really interesting and new bits in it! Thanks for the work. 👏 Also the track breakdowns on Patreon sound really cool! 🤓
i’ve watched liken 4 hours of how to make your music sound like fred again but ima be real i don’t even make music idk these are so entertaining it’s cool seeing what’s going on in these songs i love thanks for this!😊
BRB, gotta clean up my splattered brain matter from all over my room now... The way you break this down is entirely unmatched. Thank you SO much for this video!
Love your bit about how the fidelity of the track is just a vibe (and not just talking about the lofi chill vibe). I've heard a lot of lofi tracks that bang, and a lot of high-fi tracks that are garbage. It is all about the vibe.
another super useful and easily digestible video packed with little tips and tricks that can have a huge impact on your music. for me your channel is indispensable in my music education and for that i thank you.
This is spot on. Gold techniques applied on a trending electronic music artist simple but effectively explained. I already know I will be spending lots of money on your masterclasses and courses 🥲 The first tip with the 3rd and 5th note on the scale is an absolut banger tip, in 3 years of watching YT tutorials i havent found another tip regarding best practise notes/ chords for techno or likewise music. This is great content. Enough said. Something I am still missing out there in the galaxy of YT tutorials is tutorials regarding the new high frequency stabs sounds lots of NEW melodic techno song have like Consciousness of Anyma & Chris Avantgarde . Most PROPER melodic techno tutorials are 2-3 years old, the the lead, bass and stab techniques are outdated. If you could do THAT @Oscar, i might as well hang up a poster of you in my bed room hahaha. Thank you so much, keep up the great work! :)
It happens a lot. I read the titles of your tutorials and I am unsure if I wanna watch or not. Then I watch like 2 minutes and I am like: "that's interesting." Very interesting video.
i listen to your casts because i know youre all about music, and thats the source. thanks for all the knowledge shared.., i just re-started after 2o years of non-. lots to learn. impulse tracker has gone a long way :D
completely subscribing to your channel. you give me hope that i can learn something and mix my own music. About 20 years ago I studied sound engineering but I've forgotten much of it. I also felt it was overly theoretical and not practical enough. it also wasn't very clear. you make things clear and easy to understand.
That explanation about the sound quality being related to the vibe was so eye opening! I love more industrial type of heavily distorted techno / breaks, but if I grabbed one of the kicks or snares from them I would definitely think they sound bad, but only because it's in isolation
Gotta say it man....once i play ur video i learn something new fs...and i m pretty sure it's the case of almost everyone who comes here like u learn something new be it a small stuff or a game changing stuff no matter how experienced u r😌😌
Outstanding tutorial as always Oscar! I recently completed your beginner's course and cant' speak highly enough of it. I really hope you make a melodic house or tough tech house course next!
Thank you thank you THANK YOU for these videos. Very insightful, especially for people like me who's been doing rock/indie but want to get an insight in other musical realms. And they all do connect in the human elements. Love Fred Again.., that third album is so »human«, melancholy and exigent. It breathes an intimacy and urgency of life.
I love you bro! You bring back that musical passion for me.. had me cheesing out, saying ",Yeahhh I want more!" Aww that was great. Great video and tyvm for what you do, Jesus Christ bless you!!

So true!
This is one hell of a mindset, almost two years that I'm making music and I'm starting to diggin into it
v I b E eereeeeeeer
This is super accurate for me as well.
Same. There are a lot of us.
Fred’s “bad” microphone thing is genius. He’s making bangers out of the infinite number of rough ideas we all have in our voice memos. And Ai won’t be able to replicate that intimacy as easily.
Right, our unique interpretation and decision making process is hard to emulate.
AI could never 🌊
The fading in and out on the filter is very similar to the idea, in classical music, of making sure the music is breathing. That it feels like it's being sung from a human, the way humans have to take breaths while singing.
Oh wow, I don't think I ever really thought about that connection. That's actually a beautiful way of thinking about it!
Fred was classically trained at a music conservatoire, so you can see a lot of classical techniques applied to his music
Underdog, I think people are loving this video because you mostly treat it like a DJ set. By teaching in real time with the beat looping, the tutorial is so much more enjoyable. I hate production videos that never drop the beat. Get it dude!

“Low quality is a vibe”….
Turns out I’ve actually been vibing this whole time!

3:01 - I don't mind abrupt changes though, they used to do that in the 60s. I enjoy an abrupt change that has come out of nowhere.
the remake is SO on point, thanks for sharing!
Boy when I hear that guy explaining music I’m melting away to a world full of composing and satisfaction from what I get and what learned)
🥰
Brilliant. I’m learning, so inspired by your approach. Thank you Oscar!
nice one oscar. Ive been listening to fred again, lately and I've definitely become a new fan of his. the timing of this video is great.
Terrific video! Super detailed and beautifully explained! Thanks man. Fred Again is really a special kind of tea, so i’m really happy that you could extract and explain his techniques in clearly understandable ways. Thanks! ❤️
I love videos that go into the psychology behind music like this.
Great video, love the techniques geared towards a certain artist, and love Fred again

Cheers Oscar, you're a great teacher, really grateful you share your knowledge here.
Fred again should be making videos about your productions Oscar, love your productions mate.
🥰
Thank's for doing this. For someone who is falling deeply in love with uk house this just makes me want to learn to produce even more ❤ thanks again
Thank you!!! Always so helpful. I'd love to see a Polo & Pan analysis.
I second that !
They have a very interesting blend of electronic music and pop production + afro latin touch to it !

My mixing engineer when he gets my absolutely destroyed 16-bit kick: **THIS IS NOT THE VIBE MY DUDE**
😂😂😂😂
Great video, as always thank you for your creative insights!
