On Boeing aeroplanes you can simply join the waypoints without executing. Make a note of the calculated altitude at the start of the shortcut and then erase the modification. Next, enter the altitude as a constraint (at or below) and you can continue to follow the descent path indicator. You will be on profile for the shortcut, but the entire route is still present should ATC change their mind.
