For this year I’ve been stockin up on lamelo, Edwards, Halliburton & Quickley… been getting their rookie cards for $2-$13 all year hoping they’ll have around a $20 floor in 1-2 years
@@codyhuesers no Prizm or Topps Chrome that year. All cards mentioned are rookie cards. Good cards to collect that year being that they are all Rookie cards from 2012.
Finally eBay! You finally recognize how much money we bring to your company. Sold two cards for over $1000 each just last month so I speak from experience.
@@basketsresale Luka's prices are just ridiculous. How can Lebron James, or Kobe Bryant rc's be under Luka`s rookie cards...literally the only way that this makes sense is speculation, as Kobe and James are already Hall of fame members, where Luka is only about to enter year 3.
@@creepyrobsta5509 yup 100 percent correct, its a speculation everyone thinking is this guy the next Lebron, etc kind of thing, along with people trying to monopolize his Top cards making them rise, i have a few Lukas i got for cheap that im holding on to , but the crazy thing in this market is top notch HOF players like Duncan and Dirk and many other cards are looked passed which is ridiculous, i stocked up on Klay Thompson and saw his card prices soar like crazy, a lot of it is a gamble and for my collection i invest in proven talent and some rookies i highly believe in.

Should be considered that diversifying on bargain bin cards is still the smartest play - one off season move takes the obscure talent and makes them relevant again. It’s not always a linear path as you describe. When you only ‘invest’ in psa 10 or above you put yourself on your own cliff. There are smarter plays than that.
@@crazykev6491 Well Basketball is the highest growing sport. Take it from someone who a couple years ago invested in Hockey (because I like the sport the most) yet my McDavid and Mackinnon cards haven't been a great investment.

His analysis unfairly designates a "worthless" value to cards below $100. It's funny because, Mitchell Robinson from 2018, just sold for $90. The same guy Geoff recommended years ago. I suppose $90 is not relevant.
@@canoak768 I meant that point because I literally just made a UA-cam video called "You're In A Junk Wax Era and Your Sports Card Investments Will Be Worthless" Less than a week ago, so it was pretty funny to see Geoff say the same thing in his own words. He can just invite me on next time!
He's had some injury issues but he's still very much a building block for Memphis. The risk is if he gets another serious injury that delays his progression again.
Good video. One interesting thing to do for card channels is to review who they picked months ago and see how their current strategy measures up with who they picked way back then.

Agree w/ your analysis. My opinion based on the data, analytics & analysis of these classes: Only longterm holds: Luka & Giannis. Best values factoring in opportunity cost & risk to reward from a in season to few year flip: Booker, Herro, Ja, Ingram, Mitchell & Murray. High risk/high reward: Zion. Good players but bad time to buy: Trae, SGA & Tatum.
I enjoy your channel a ton, but this one missed the mark a bit. Age, statistics and statistical trajectory matter FAR more than card year and previous sales or lack thereof. As pertaining to future valuation.
What about a player who recently retired and you know that he will be introduced into the hall of fame once they are illegible? Are those players cards worth holding? Or should I just sell and not take a chance holding?

Are you worried we are coming into a 2nd junk wax era, a junk plastic era if you will, with the exponential rise in graded cards. For example Zion and Ja have over 4000 and 2500 psa 10 silver prizms in population respectively

Geoff could you do an episode on PSA vs BGS? It's mad that PSA 10 sells for up to double BGS9.5 when there is clearly a much larger range in PSA 10 that covers cards that wouldn't even get a 9.5... Thanks :)

I get that players fall off the map it’s always been like that but if you went back one more year your trend line isn’t the same you have to blame some of that on draft class
Im curious about your “danger zone”.. do you base it purely on price of card? I ask because two players you had in there have been on the incline and performed really well last year. Devonte Graham was the most improved player last yr.
You also have to take into account that the 13-14 rookie class wasn't very good. Remember, that was the Anthony Bennett draft and Michael Carter-Williams was the rookie of the year.
Great video and fact that hype/prospecting is what creates the unsustainable value. Track it, grade it, move it cause in the end that will be more profitable time and money wise.
Again, if you are actually *investing*, go unopened. If you are collecting and want to have fun, chase the individual guys. Just like the stock market, the odds say you will lose money. (Just another manifestation of the Lake Wobegon effect). Which is fine if you just want to have fun. Budget accordingly!
Interesting analysis however you have to take into account that the hobby just exploded in the last two years why more cards in 2018-2020 have more cards over $100 as supply and demand has increased in the last two years
Hopefully the sheer amount of people that login and try out the free days of market movers will encourage a price reduction. I’ve wanted to get this since day 1 but feel it’s just out of my price range.

I get the idea, but I feel like Giannis was still worthless for the first couple of years of his career. It wasn't until like 2016 or so when he started posting a triple-double here and there.
As someone who watched Giannis religiously for the first 3 years of his career, I could see his greatness as a lanky 18 year old (wish I was collecting then), however, you are totally correct. Giannis didn't truly find his stride until the end of his 3rd year.

draft class quality is something you didn’t really touch on a lot 2013 2014 and 2015 are just not good classes overall especially the first 2 i agree there is risk in certain guys but there’s a lot to be consider more than just look at the card drop off when those classes weren’t really strong to begin with
But.... back in 2013, 2014 and 2015, did people think they weren’t good draft classes? Or did we only learn that over time? How do we know that 2019 was a strong draft class? We won’t really know for a few more years.

I picked $100 because, IMO, with grading fees being what they are now, it’s likely not worth getting a raw card graded unless the PSA 10 can fetch $100 or more on the open market.
That’s the great thing about this hobby - all of us have different bars to measure things. If you set it lower or use PSA 9s as a measure it doesn’t invalidate the reasoning.
@@SportsCardInvestor makes sense. Plenty of those other guys are a lot more risky investments at their higher prices vs some guys around 100 being arguably more undervalued so just trying to piece together the perspective, thanks.
Players like Sekou, Keldon Johnson and Kevin Porter Jr. Are 19 and 20 yrs old. So I doubt that their cards fall fast after this coming season if they don't blow up. Alot of "card investors" are buying them because of their age and current skill set. So they will not give up on them that fast
Hi Geoff,though you have made some valid points. One thing I would like to point out is that the hobby only picked up this much heat in the last 18 months. Of course guys from previous years will be cheap. Some of their cards may have only gone over the $100 threshold this year.
Saw Jalen Hurts fill in yesterday for a benched Wentz; the players rallied behind him, but he threw a bad pick too. Jordan Love might not be bad to grab on the cheap (that's how I got my Rodgers rookies in 2005), Brandon Aiyuk is pretty solid as is Justin Jefferson. I think Tua might be the big QB to grab, if that's your thing--they're winning with him. Burrow is going to fall more into the Carson Wentz/Blake Bortles/Marcus Mariota category I think. Herbert is smoke and mirrors and is being exposed as the season drags on
Remember folks this is just Goeffs opinion its not written in stone and it don't mean things could turn out to be way different for some of the guys he mentioned it's all a gamble at the end of the day but I always go with my gut when it comes to certain players!!

Just buy sealed wax and hold as Geoff has mentioned in a previous episode, as not every player will pan out, actually most will not.

Is it worth getting mosaic rookie cards graded? For example I have some Ja, Zion, and coby white mosaics I was going to get graded.

Two reasons. 1. The case on PSA is preferred. 2. People want 10 over 9.5 as its perceived as a higher grade.

If you buy RC HOFers and Will be HOFers, you dont have to worry about praying players careers work out and your cards go up.

The harsh harsh reality..97% of all cards printed are essentially worthless 3 years after they are out.
You ‘betcha! It’s finding that 3% that keeps me in the game!

I picked $100 because, IMO, with grading fees being what they are now, it’s likely not worth getting a raw card graded unless the PSA 10 can fetch $100 or more on the open market.
That’s the great thing about this hobby - all of us have different bars to measure things. If you set it lower or use PSA 9s as a measure it doesn’t invalidate the reasoning.
@@SportsCardInvestor makes sense. Plenty of those other guys are a lot more risky investments at their higher prices vs some guys around 100 being arguably more undervalued so just trying to piece together the perspective, thanks.
Players like Sekou, Keldon Johnson and Kevin Porter Jr. Are 19 and 20 yrs old. So I doubt that their cards fall fast after this coming season if they don't blow up. Alot of "card investors" are buying them because of their age and current skill set. So they will not give up on them that fast

Hi Geoff,though you have made some valid points. One thing I would like to point out is that the hobby only picked up this much heat in the last 18 months. Of course guys from previous years will be cheap. Some of their cards may have only gone over the $100 threshold this year.

Saw Jalen Hurts fill in yesterday for a benched Wentz; the players rallied behind him, but he threw a bad pick too. Jordan Love might not be bad to grab on the cheap (that's how I got my Rodgers rookies in 2005), Brandon Aiyuk is pretty solid as is Justin Jefferson. I think Tua might be the big QB to grab, if that's your thing--they're winning with him. Burrow is going to fall more into the Carson Wentz/Blake Bortles/Marcus Mariota category I think. Herbert is smoke and mirrors and is being exposed as the season drags on
Remember folks this is just Goeffs opinion its not written in stone and it don't mean things could turn out to be way different for some of the guys he mentioned it's all a gamble at the end of the day but I always go with my gut when it comes to certain players!!
