#1 Have fun. That's exactly right. That's the one thing about this hobby that is attractive to all. No matter how much money you have or have available to spend. This hobby has something in everyones price range.
You all prolly dont care but does anybody know a trick to log back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the account password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Brodie Nico I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
So glad you brought up cost of fees when selling. Sometimes sellers don’t realize through an eBay transaction for a $100 item. 10% eBay fee, 2.9% PayPal then $3 or 3% shipping. Total 15.9% - net $84 dollars. So if the market price is $100 you need to buy for well under $84 to make $$. In this example you are under water roughly 16% as soon as you buy. (Assuming eBay)
You forgot to account for tax on all your net income 10-20%. Luckily since your underwater in your transaction you don't have to pay any. Invest in cards you like, diversify like a stock portfolio, and enjoy the hobby.
I love this video. This past month I got my 17 yo son into the hobby. He seems to really enjoy it so far. He’s been texting me a lot about cards lately. I just forwarded him this video. You have some much good information in here. Keep up the good work and I’ll keep watching.
Great video. One thing I would have added would be to stay within your means in regards to spending. So many people in this hobby (both old and new) spend way more than they can afford and take on unnecessary risk. Don't get caught up in trying to impress or keep up with other collectors/investors on social media. I see so many people purchase amazing cards only to have to sell them shortly afterwards because an emergency happens and they needed the funds. It should go without saying that having to sell quickly due to these types of circumstances rarely nets you the best profit or price for a card due to the fact that selling quickly trumps all regardless of how the market is currently doing.
I was interested in cards as a kid. Never got into it for many reasons. Now i have time. I have been a subscriber. I enjoy your presentations. They are very informative, clear and high quality material. Keep up the good work. You inspire many.
Adding on #10: New collectors/investors need to know that grading costs money (sometimes A LOT of money) and takes a long time. Thicker cards are tougher to get good grades on. dark border cards are tougher to get good grades on. Ungraded cards can still be safe. They can at times be better investments as well if the buyer themselves feel the card will grade high. The person that took the chance and paid money to send the card in for evaluation is most likely the person that makes the most from the card when taking it to the secondary market. Bottom line of what im trying to say is that new collectors shouldnt be scared of ungraded cards.
Love the thoughts! I definitely agree with you that ungraded cards can sometimes be safe, and can sometimes be a great investment if you buy them raw and they grade high. But, I think that's a tough thing for a new investor to figure out. New investors struggle to see imperfections in cards, or understand what will grade a 10 vs a 9 vs an 8. So, I think for simplicity and peace of mind, graded cards are a better bet for newer investors.
This list was really well thought out. I want to comment on your point about focusing on shooters/superstar guards. I think this is very important to beginners. When I first started out investing in cards, I bought alot of my favorite players, who happened to be Power Forwards and Centers. Although lots of them are playing well and panning out, the return compared to guards in that same rookie class is night and day. Consolidation of a collection and what you own is important and focusing on just a few guys has been key for me. Makes things alot easier to navigate too and just like you said, stick to what you know and if you don't know it, learn learn learn before making any investment decisions. Great episode Geoff!
Zachary Garrett I have (had) same issue! I love RBs cause I played RB in college, HS, pop warner, etc! But in card investment, RC QBs drive the market! Again it’s unfair to the other positions! Baseball is too confusing for me to keep up with so I agree with him about picking one sport! I love football, and will stick with football! Dallas Cowboys also are my favorite team but they have a premium due to the fact “we” DC fans but cards, shirts, anything DC! Thanks good luck
Great advice! Especially tip #2 about timing. That is extremely important in investing. Thank you for bringing this hobby in my direction. I'm having lots of fun and learning a lot. Thank you for the awesome advice as always!
Amen all the psa 10 mess drives me crazy. You have people that actually think a psa 9 in a card that is 20 to 30 years old is a bad thing. I collect ken griffy jr. in psa 9s just because you can obtain his rookie cards in a more affordable way. This it has to be a 10 thing is sad. Collect the cards you like and can afford.
As for #11...I've been collecting for 36 yrs and (usually) set aside about $10 per paycheck and just collect my teams (A's, Dolphins) and looking to complete the entire all - time roster of both teams
Ed Sprinkle, his only card 1951 Bowman #51 RC HOF 2020 class football shot up over 1500% or 16 times just because he is in the hall of fame now. A psa 7 for $20. shot overnight to $320. and i've seen his ungraded cards sell for $200. in very good condition. 😮
It would be cool to get a Top 10 cards. Im investing in Ja Morant and Zion Graded 10 and some Luca. I collected 25 years ago and I am a reseller of Vintage Clothing . Going to start investing in Cards again for fun.
Great video. The only thing I would add is: by raw cards to get graded but do it in person or buy lots online. It’s a gamble but could pay off huge especially high grades in commons or non rookie stars and hofers! Collectors are collecting slabbed sets! Great video and channel!!!
I will disagree with one of you pieces of advice. No. 10: Buy graded cards whenever possible. Your reasoning for doing this is that cards that aren't graded either a) got a bad grade and were removed from the case or b) aren't in good enough shape to be graded. I think this is really bad advice. I, personally, will not send any card in to be graded. PSA takes waaaayyy too long to return cards. I sent cards in in August through my LCS and still haven't gotten them back in mid-December even though I was promised a 45-businessday turnaround. The market has totally changed on the cards I sent. I absolutely regret sending them. Also, it's a risk to have somebody arbitrarily put a 9 or 10 grade on a card. That subjective grade will either make or break the value of the card. If you get a 9, you just wasted your money because your card is worth the same as if it had never been graded. In my opinion, it's just not worth the risk or the wait to get cards graded. I think there are probably a lot of collectors out there who share these frustrations with PSA and just deal in ungraded cards. If you pass on all cards that are not graded, you are passing on some potentially great cards.
Seredic Boffin Yes! I hope the hobby will come to their senses at some point, regarding grading. You are simply paying another human being, with no real specialized training, to give his opinion on your card. THATS IT. PSA is so backlogged that cards are inspected for at most 60 seconds. I don’t think it’s a scam but many people certainly put way too much stock in it.
Depends on who the player is as far as a grade 9. It frustrating that everyone thinks only a ten matters. There is no way possible for new collector's to have every card a 10. I do agree with you on how ridiculously long grading takes. I was a kid during the junk wax era and during the baseball strike. My advice is a 9 isn't bad on a hall of famer or rookie card that's 20 years or more older. 10's will one-day be out of reach for many as the hobby grows.
Great vid Geoff. One thing to add, if you are holding boxes, make sure the top players are not redemptions in the set that you are keeping unopened. They will drop in price as soon as the redemption dates pass.
My biggest expensive lesson is using eBay lol.. It's great to get liquid but for buying purposes deals are outside of eBay such as pwcc, fb marketplace.
Great episode Geoff! Thanks for the tips! I’m mostly a football guy, but just started buying some Embiid and Zion. I’ll hold and see how things go but take your advice to stick to 1 sport for the most part.
Thank you so much Geoff for these videos. This one really got me thinking about how i sell on EBAY and some of the comments are really good reads. The knowledge is real!!!
Number 10 is a stretch. Id argue that a lot of people dont want to grade their cards and telling people to assume they're in ungradable condition is ignorant
You are right that not every raw card is ungradable. Maybe I oversimplified that statement. But it's hard for a new investor to look at a raw card and see imperfections and know how it would grade. I think for simplicity and peace of mind, graded cards are a better bet for newer investors.
Hi Jeff/Anyone, I'm trying to find out the best way to order hobby boxes early like upcoming prizm next March. Can i order direct or join auctions from Panini if i'm not a formal dealer. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.
Good stuff man. I’ve been in discord for two months now.. wish you could market it out a lot easier so more people would join, Facebook is fun also.. I’m in a lot of groups and done a lot of transactions
Great advice!! I am just a collector though, but I am getting priced out of some of the cards I would like to add to my collection. Have you ever done a video on how these fractional investor companies work?
Great Video...this is the 1st of your videos I've watched. The 2nd was the 1st of this series ( SCI 101 New Investor ) . I gave more of a Content Comment on that one. I'll watch more of your videos for Sure and for your Support. I appreciate your contribution to the card collecting community ! Keep Up The Good Work & Ty 4 Sharing !
I really really wish that some of the More experienced people within this group would come alongside people like me and help them make some money. I need to go at a slower pace because I'm still Taking it all in. Maybe you could have people who are experienced more in this field And have them come alongside people like me and help them so that we can all sorta have a similar pace.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge👍 it has been so helpful over the last couple of months. One question that I have. Is there any better way to create my inventory of cards using some software other than spread sheets? There must surely be tools available that will make adding cards to my inventory a lot easier any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks for this video Geoff. Well produced and informative. I’ve been going through my cards from child and young adulthood 60’s - 90’s. Have quite the assets and sold a vintage lot on Facebook that I and the buyer felt were fairly priced. Your thoughts are helpful for future sales.
Quick question.. I want to buy a box of cards just to experience why everyone enjoys it so much (I’m new to investing) but I don’t know where is a good place to buy a box. Can someone help me out?
You forgot one important element in collecting for profit ----- Personality sells , Swag sells !!!! Example, I wont buy any Cody Bellinger or Juan Soto because of low swag factor. Prospects I just bought Julio Rodriguez ( J-Rod ), Marco Luciano ( Freaking Stud ) and Bobby Witt Jr. ( great numbers, all American guy ). I saw this firsthand in the dealer showcases at the local flea market I buy at, it took awhile to figure why some players dont move up or there not in the buzz among dealers.
I must mention, a small update to this video. As the hobby has gracefully expanded into a surge of new young fanatics, some, perhaps most, are not able to purchase 1st year cards of a wanted player because they are too expensive for them. They have turned to buying the next best thing which is second and third year cards of said players wanted. So if you also have some of those keep them handy. They say the hobby is going to plummet, I think the hobby has not even started, keep a look out for a new wave of card enthusiast! @sport card investor
I like cheap shiny cards that cause a sensory overload. Also only buy cards from my favorite players on my favorite team. I feel like when the market tanks again I'm protected since my collection already isn't worth much 😂
I hate that psa 10? On ebay. Because when you go to find a certain card graded a ten I have to look at a million cards before I actually find ones that are really graded. I wish ebay would do something about that.
2nd Comment...As a new collector I'd like to see a video on "How To Properly Wrap/Package Cards To Be Mailed Out". I watch a lot of UA-cam breakers' Mailday Videos. Many times I see "CRAZY OVER-PACKAGING" & some "NOT ENOUGH PACKAGING" cards that were mailed out. Would YOU make/post a video on this subject ? I'm sure this will be appropriate for your SCI 101 NEW INVESTOR series. Keep Up The Good Work & TY 4 Sharing !
There is a difference between an “Investor” and “Collector.” Collector’s should be enjoying the ride while building their vision of cardboard art but investors should probably be more dreaming of the bottom line regardless of the entertainment value, imo.
I am not sure if in 3 years he will have 150 games, he will not win anything with few injuries per year starting from being 19. For me Zion because of that is not a deal. I preger Luka, Tray, Ja Morant and Hachimura.
Hi Geoff my name is Michael Bell From California How can you Tell a really good fake sports card cards that looks all most identical to the real card with out getting to a
That’s not true about the grading... I have very valuable cards that I know will be easy 9 or even 10s but I just don’t like grading cards. I like my cards raw
I’ve had luck giving to family member kids, anyone who’s into a particular player or team, organizations that help kids and trading people for stuff. I put some on Craig’s list for free to help drive the market downwards 😃 on eBay I’ve had luck getting rid of commons in great condition for people completing sets! Usually vintage years. Or selling stars in bad condition who love a particular player. This is a lot of work of course but I get satisfaction of helping someone. It’s like your a match maker😃 If I have 50,000 cards and I can average $1 or more per card well.....lots of work though. I do it to practice organizational skills.
Why won' t collector's buy a card of a player that had a great year or accomplish something great that year. Like let say if Baker wins the Superbowl in 2020. Why won't his 2020 card be valuable?
I think sports card investors, and I mean a whole wing of them.. including myself would love to hear your takes on different ways of autograph hunting.. mainly thru the mail.. lots of ways to make a great return.. I've said something like this before, not sure if you saw it though.. also, If like to hear more specifically about different players you like, specific card you have and like, and the flips your making or already made... I'm always curious on what specifically which cards you like, love, or just wanna stay away from... also love your break your doing!! Keep doing you! I know I'm in the drawing!! And I love rule numero uno, which is FUN!!!
Thanks. I personally have never tried autograph hunting through the mail, so I'd have to bring on an expert who has as a guest. I wonder if any of them are out there who watch the show? If so, contact me! I'll do some more episodes and individual players and cards soon.

@Iker Nickolas glad I could help xD

Yes
eBay is a scam

Whats the best online site to sell? Ebay gets a ton of looks so there is that major advantage.
Thank You for Being around Mr.Wilson & giving us Tips and Pointers for this Fun Hobby.

Number 8 is what gets me. There is no reason there should be all of these different variations. It's outrageous
This will definitely be my passion.

Disagree on only buying graded cards; it depends on what your buying. Vintage cards don’t require a psa 10 to have great value.

Geoff your a amazing part of the community
Can someone tell me the most efficient way to check the price history of cards?
Awesome information ! I would also say don’t get caught up in fomo. I have seen it from cards and comics people going nuts for something .
I will disagree with one of you pieces of advice. No. 10: Buy graded cards whenever possible. 9's go for far more then raw in most situations...
I'm from New Zealand and shipping cost range from $20-70 for one card. Its crazy but can get a box shipped for around $40
Great tips thanks for sharing.
Lots of insight!!!
Keep up the Great Content!!!
😎...
Long time collector and trader. Never ever hold new cards for more than a few weeks. Awesome pull can become nothing in a month
Brady Braun I’d agree but doubt he’s ignorant.
You are right that not every raw card is ungradable. Maybe I oversimplified that statement. But it's hard for a new investor to look at a raw card and see imperfections and know how it would grade. I think for simplicity and peace of mind, graded cards are a better bet for newer investors.
Invest in what you know - what a good reminder. Thank you!
Hi Jeff/Anyone, I'm trying to find out the best way to order hobby boxes early like upcoming prizm next March. Can i order direct or join auctions from Panini if i'm not a formal dealer. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.
Don't go chasing in box breaks! Figure out what card you REALLY want to hit, and find a way to get that card by itself on eBay
I agree to an extent, although I love the fun and anticipation of possibly pulling something amazing at an affordable price.
How long do you usually sit on a box? Bad practice to buy and flip right away?
Good stuff man. I’ve been in discord for two months now.. wish you could market it out a lot easier so more people would join, Facebook is fun also.. I’m in a lot of groups and done a lot of transactions
Great advice!! I am just a collector though, but I am getting priced out of some of the cards I would like to add to my collection. Have you ever done a video on how these fractional investor companies work?
Thank you great info love this video

Hi Geoff. New subs here from the Phillipines. I love NBA cards but it's too expensive here
Is it wrong if I just want to collect and not resell?
Condition is EVERYTHING!
Huge info, Thanks Geoff!

Is mike trout rookies still worth investing in?
Why do you ask?
Great content
Great video!
Can someone help me. I have a Luka Status Status RC numbered out of 77 what is it's value? Thank You.
Search eBay and PSA for an approximation.
Check Ebay sold listings
What is the Luka cards in the background?
Holy that was quite a big video but it was worth it
Great episode
I must mention, a small update to this video. As the hobby has gracefully expanded into a surge of new young fanatics, some, perhaps most, are not able to purchase 1st year cards of a wanted player because they are too expensive for them. They have turned to buying the next best thing which is second and third year cards of said players wanted. So if you also have some of those keep them handy. They say the hobby is going to plummet, I think the hobby has not even started, keep a look out for a new wave of card enthusiast! @sport card investor
10+ years collecting playboy, pokemon, yugioh, baseball, basketball, hockey, wrestling,& racing cards
Very much enjoy your videos and knowledge!!!
Thank You for this!
Will grading companies grade reprint cards or will they even notice if its a reprint?
#21. I only buy cards that are going to go up in price.
I like cheap shiny cards that cause a sensory overload. Also only buy cards from my favorite players on my favorite team. I feel like when the market tanks again I'm protected since my collection already isn't worth much 😂
Mark my word...the lebron jam masters is gonna b a big card in the future. I'm buying as many as i can
I hate that psa 10? On ebay. Because when you go to find a certain card graded a ten I have to look at a million cards before I actually find ones that are really graded. I wish ebay would do something about that.
Harden... makes 40% of points seem to come from the ft line. Its not exciting but he is the leading scorer in the nba. So its a bit of a boondoggle.
Great contents.
what's about kobe signed card? Is it befit number 2?
2nd Comment...As a new collector I'd like to see a video on "How To Properly Wrap/Package Cards To Be Mailed Out". I watch a lot of UA-cam breakers' Mailday Videos. Many times I see "CRAZY OVER-PACKAGING" & some "NOT ENOUGH PACKAGING" cards that were mailed out. Would YOU make/post a video on this subject ? What does stockx know about sports cards??
I start collecting cards in 91-92 and love it my friend give me a Chris Webber card and I was hooked. I love your show.
There is a difference between an “Investor” and “Collector.” Collector’s should be enjoying the ride while building their vision of cardboard art but investors should probably be more dreaming of the bottom line regardless of the entertainment value, imo.
The hobby sure seems to be booming now.
what do you know about racing cards?
21. Avoid players who from beginming has many injuries.
So avoid Zion?
I am not sure if in 3 years he will have 150 games, he will not win anything with few injuries per year starting from being 19. For me Zion because of that is not a deal. I preger Luka, Tray, Ja Morant and Hachimura.
You can check how many games played in first 3 years Olajuwon, Robinson or Shaq
Crazy Kev sometimes organisation is problem like Knicks, Wizards, Cavs, Kings.
i literally took down all the things that you said. I wish i had seen this video before i burned 1k usd on box breaks in just 1 month. lmao
Love the video
Im still confused with the variations, and ive been into the hobby for ages.

That’s not true about the grading... I have very valuable cards that I know will be easy 9 or even 10s but I just don’t like grading cards. I like my cards raw
#11 is very true.
Any advise on how to move common cards (new and vintage)?

Dont dumpster i kid.
People are going to start thinking that you're manipulating the Luka Doncic market lol
I'll do some more episodes and individual players and cards soon.
help me getting back in
