This is defenitely one of the most interesting videos i've watched on this channel. Great work man! Do you have plans to do more of these? It'd be interesting to see more genre comparisons.
Great video! Maybe next you can focus on the differences between Power Metal and Speed Metal/Traditional Heavy Metal since there are certain bands that kind of blur the lines such as Hammerfall, Primal Fear, etc
Awesome video! The fascinating thing about these subgenres is that they both originated from pushing extremity, but just developed in different ways. A lot of the mid-80s early Extreme Metal is just bands trying to break boundaries and be more extreme, they didn't have a "style" in mind. Look at Vulcano's Bloody Vengeance from 1986 - people call it Black/Death/Thrash - seems confusing but it makes perfect sense because subgenres are only labels for things that have evolved to the point of distinct separation, and these styles hadn't fully evolved yet. Later on - Blackened Death Metal became a think in the 90s, and that felt like the evil twins who were separated at birth coming together again, except this time combining their more evolved, second generation forms together as opposed to their first generation beginnings. So an album in the mid-80s that gets labelled Black/Death is that way purely by accident due to their similar origins, but Black/Death in the 90s was a consequence of bands deliberately combining influences after each side became more distinct and separate.
yeah, you could throw in thrash there as well. they all kinda spawned from the same bunch of albums. The early works of venom, hellhammer, slayer, etc.
Great informative video. I love the melting pot of extreme metal formation in the early 80s and how bands were taking inspiration from each other and pushing the boundaries one way or another.

It's funny (and kind of weird to me) but when Dissection released their first two albums it was considered to be death metal at the time. Ole Öhman (drummer on those two records) has even stated himself that Dissection was a death metal band and those two albums were death metal albums. Today most people think that those two albums are black metal, including me.
My first experience of Black metal vs. Death metal was when I went to a Knotfest Concert in 2019; wherein, the band Behemoth performed first on stage, and then was followed by Gojira. The differences were very distinct!
Cool informative video! I would say Death Metal is closely linked with the Hardcore Punk Scene whereas Black Metal has very little Hardcore influences and a lot of the fanbase is like "no mosh, no pogo". you dont really see many skater dudes going to Black Metal shows ;)
Interesting. I was always under the impression that black metal has a lot in common with harcore punk, especially first wave bands like Hellhammer, Bathory and Sodom and some very early Mayhem material. Hardcore punk, especially the underground European scene in the early 80s sounded surprisingly similar to some early black metal. In terms of attitude there's definitely some similarities there. I personally believe that hardcore punk is often downplayed when discussing the evolution of extreme metal genres. While there was very little if any influence of punk on NWOBHM and associated or parallel scenes, there was definitely a strong influence on thrash, death and black metal subgenres.
@@elimalinsky7069 There was A LOT of influence from punk in NWOBHM scene and vice versa. Venom, Tank, Warfare, Amebix, Iron Maiden, Demon, Satan, Discharge, Broken Bones, English Dogs...
@@paravan2000 Well, at least in the case for Iron Maiden there are multiple interviews of Steve Harris claiming to despise punk music and denying that Maiden were influenced by punk. I think the original Eddie artwork on that first album got some people confused because that genuinly looked like flyer art for a punk gig. I agree about Tank though, that band had some strong punk vibes. Not sure about the other bands, but Venom was very much influenced by Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Motorhead, with the latter of the bunch being the most punkish of them all. Lemmy also used to claim he generally regarded Motorhead as more of a punk band than a metal band.
@@elimalinsky7069 First two Maiden LPs had a strong street punk vibe. Although Steve Harris disliked punk, Paul Di Anno was a punk rocker. Such contradictions between members and opinions existed in many other bands on both sides at the time, because there were both the influences and rivalries between punk and heavy metal scenes. Motorhead was the first "crossover" band as both punks and metalheads attended their gigs and Lemmy was in touch with both scenes, he was teaching Sid Vicious to play bass etc. Venom were strongly influenced by Motorhead and Sex Pistols, lots of punks attended their shows too. Tank and Warfare were bands with ex The Damned members. Amebix were a squatter punks who were into heavy metal and played their own version of metal which would later influence so many bands on both sides. Demon was on punk label and shared the management with The Exploited and Discharge. Discharge basically invented hardcore but also thrash and were a key influence for most thrash metal bands (including Metallica, Kreator, Hellhammer, Sepultura etc), before regressing into a bad heavy metal band in late 80s. Broken Bones were a band with ex Discharge members who played it better than Discharge in their later distinctly metal phase. English Dogs started as punk rock band who soon evolved to speed/power metal. Diamond Head were also influenced by punk, Brian Tatler many times cited how his songwriting got important push when he attended first punk gigs, in a way - I was learning a classical guitar for years but had difficulties writing a song - seeing these guys blasting with so little skills inspired me to do it right etc. Judas Priest also took some influence from punk, their songwriting became more streamlined since British Steel... There were also lots of crossovers between both scenes outside of UK at the time - Mercyful Fate being one with punk ties - Denner and Shermann played in punk rock band Brats before joining Mercyful Fate... and so on.
I do think the lyrical content can be different. Lots of death metal does use satanic imagery but lots of death metal bands were talking about personal struggles, political issues, gore, drugs, and comedy here and there

Do a rank em all for death angel! Also the way to tell, what is death metal, and what is black metal is really easier than thrash and speed, aka the vocals.
Most early black metal and even proto black metal bands transitioned in or out of death metal. Mayhem for example was a death metal band before their infamous first album. Venom and bathory were of course speed/thrash that transitioned. Selputura was sorta proto black on their first two albums but became a big death metal band. There are also a lot of bands that do both.
Black metal has a lot, a lot, a lot of blast beats, even more so than Death metal I think. So that's the only part I would disagree with. Death metal tends to have slower, heavier sections with more chugging that breaks up the monotony. Black metal tends to have a lot more blast beats with tremolo riffs to create a dark and bleak atmosphere.
That wouldn’t be because black metal necessarily uses more blast beats, but rather in the fact that death metal has a lot more variation in the songs. It is a lot more common for a death metal song to go from tremolo picking to chuga chuga in the span of a minute as opposed to black metal
Skriver detta innan jag sett videon. Nu spelar du på min planhalva! Detta ska bli intressant!!! Återkommer..... Tillbaks! Bra sammanfattning överlag. Kanske skulle jag säga att Dissection inte är Black Metal, utan mer en egen genre mellan Black/Death. SKÅL! 🤘🤘

Panda that has seen some shit?!?......BWAHHH HAHAHAHA!!!! That's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time man! Thanks for that. Only thing I'd add is that for a lot of Black Metal it's a No Lead Guitar! club. Great video!👌
A bit OT.. I have always had that one single-but-major problem with black metal bands, which was (most of the time) the production of their records. I can always recall the shock of first time hearing Immortal's 1999 record 'At the Heart of Winter' - what a blast and loads of auditory pleasures that one was - and it continued up until 'Northern Chaos Gods', which, IMHO, was a bit of a step back.. But my personal precedent and preference was already set, so though I'm fine with music of other BM giants like Emperor and Gorgoth, it's really that messy, crammed sound, that, most of the time, makes me prefer listening to death metal. LbnL quite a good video analysis - thumbs up 🙂
I agree. I think metal just always sounds better with a bassier better production to let the rhythmic punch hit you good. The lo fi mixing style just works much better with the messiness of punk and with the more personal sound of like alt/indie types of rock
I think the main difference comes from origins of both. Black metal is older than death metal. Proto BM bands appeared BEFORE thrash, while proto DM bands came AFTER the thrash being established. So it pushed the evolution of both styles in different directions. In other words, first Angel Witch, Venom, Demon and Mercyful Fate releases were the prototypes where black metal started to evolve, and then applied to all kinds of theatrical metal bands with satanic/occult theme. Then you got debuts of Metallica, Voivod and Kreator as proto DM, as being more focused on violence, war, psychopathy and less about occult horror. There were proto black/death bands like early Possessed, Sepultura and Slayer - very extreme and aggressive thrash, but black metal lyrics. Deicide, Morbid Angel, Blasphemy, Beherit, Impaled Nazarene etc are 90s examples of that.
I’m more into thrash, but mostly because for me personally, I am not into the sound of the vocals, and mostly the lyric content when you can understand them. But i like the tightness of death metal music, only find the drumming a bit tappy and repetitive.
it's kinda the same I would say. You mute the riffs with your palm when you play so so the tones don't ring out as much which makes the riff sounds chunkier. :D
@@RuthlessMetalYT Ah alright fair enough. Yeah I am a guitarist and I was just wondering what the difference was since you were talking about them separately. I guess palm muting doesn't necessarily mean that the riff is chugging. for example there's a lot of palm muting in thrash metal but it's not chuggy, whereas death metal usually has those riffs where it's just a bunch of powerchords played with palm muting. I would call those riffs chuggy. Kind of similar to how one of the riffs in Metallica's "for whom the bell tolls" is played now I think of it
I basically like both genres and the bands that are with them but if I had to choose one i would definitely prefer Death Metal all the way Thanks RM cheers 🤘👍
Death Metal is all about Primitive, gnashing brutality and heavily distorted Down tuned guitars, Black Metal on the other hand is more Atmospheric often and Melodic on its techniques such as tremolo picking and Lo-fi to Raspy vocals.
Everything what say for black metal is true, even some element from black metal can hear in death metal also..perfekt example is first album from Bathory..but in The Return can hear some few element for death metal in upcoming bands..Bathory give basic start for future black metal genre..Bathory fan forever..
i never got into the second wave of black metal. bands. like Dimmu Burgir ; gorgoroth ; etc. bathory Celtic frost; venom and Mercyful Fate were awesome. Death metal bands like Obituary; cannibal, morbid angel; Deicide ; entombed old school bands that clearly had influences from kreator; Sodom almost all of german thrash metal bands. anyway great video as always 👍🤘🤘
Celtic frost was definetily more important for the death metal bands too as opposed to the german thrash. Celtic frost is probably in the 5 most important metal bands of all time period😭
@@RuthlessMetalYT Morbid Angel also sings about that types of subject as Deicide, and they’re both Death Metal bands. I just wanted to say that for my knowledge to death Metal bands like Morbid Angel and Deicide
The main difference between both genres is that Death Metal other than any other rock subgenre uses the chromatic scale for most of the time, whereas Black Metal riffs use the diatonic minor scale far more often. Of course something that was crucial for the second wave of Black Metal was the connection of minor chords which are not in the same diatonic scale e.g. c-minor and eb-minor and thus can only be explained by the chromatic scale. But still Black Metal riffs always find back to one diatonic scale. Still the chromatic scale is far more present in Death Metal. (the exeption is the so-called "melodic death metal", I personally wouldn't consider it death metal at all)
Let’s not forget about band logos. In general bm logos are pretty illegible. Death metal logos usually are, and letters are made to look “brutal”. Rhythm wise, black metal often has kinda duggah-duggah-duggah polka rhythms. Old Darkthrone albums used those by default, and many bm bands followed Darkthrone in this style. Musically many bm bands have a very passive or barely audible bass. This is a big difference with death metal, where the bass is fairly important.
Yeah this is actually a BIG diffrence sonically. Black metal is in the vast majority of cases built around melodic ideas, as opposed to death metal. It’s very common for songs to use not even a single sort of variation of rhythm in the same song, thing which is very uncommon in death metal. Both kind of started with just skank beats, d-beats, and blast beats, but while black metal kind of kept just using some variations of those, death metal went in much more interesting directions.
Ruthless Metal guy, if you had to pick one genre over the other, which one would you choose? I am more of a death metal guy. What do you think of Burzum? Do you think they (he) are overrated?
yeah, I definitely agree with that. Especially early on. Death Metal was as popular or perhaps even more popular than black at least here in Sweden back in the day.
Because the atmosphere, Bands like Morbid Angel and Immolation are very atmospheric, so these bands sounds darker and more evil like some other Death Metal bands.
hellhammer, slayer, celtic frost, sodom, destruction, kreator, sepultura, etc, etc, etc. ;) and even priest and sabbath if you take it further back. hehe
@@RuthlessMetalYT I call it 1970s Metal. I just thought that it might be interesting to separate the early Hard Rock from the early Metal. Or even just a video about what separates Hard Rock from Heavy Metal. It's a subject that no one delves into much. It seems that you are one of the few people who could answer the question with some validity
RM you've disappointed me there with DM lyrics :D .....it is in the name ....DM lyrics are lyrics about death :P + I would definitely add aggression and nihilism inthere
My favorite is death metal bands talking about satanism, like Deicide and Possessed.I like Black metal too,but i Always search about the band if it's or not a NSBM stuff to avoid. But my favorites are Bathory,Venom (Both 1st wave),Mayhem's Dead,Immortal and Enslaved.

I don't know whether there's any difference between these two genres or not but I certainly do know what they have in common - they both are completely unlistenable garbage.
Seems to me that DM is a little more punk and rock n roll whereas BM leans more towards classical music. Great content as always. How about the difference between DM and grind core?
Most black metal is kind of thrash because the skill floor is so low. Despite that, black metal actually has artistic masterpieces as opposed to death metal.
I say this respectfully - not to be an asshole - but you've missed the point completely. Black metal is an ideology - Satanism put with metal music. Both Mercyful Fate and Blasphemy are black metal - their style of metal (classic, power, thrash, grindcore etc) does not matter.
I said that death metal is less serious and more distant. BM bands takes them selves way too serious. hehe. I don't fully agree with that, let's say a deep purple sounding band starting to add evil themes, that don't make them a black metal band. Kinda like the band Lucifer.
You can add melody to black metal and it remains black metal, if you add melody to death metal it becomes a very different genre
it's still called melodic death metal or melo death. :)

it's kinda the same I would say. You mute the riffs with your palm when you play so so the tones don't ring out as much which makes the riff sounds chunkier. :D
I'm not a guitarist either so I'm not the best person to ask these things, I just enjoy the music.
Kind of similar to how one of the riffs in Metallica's "for whom the bell tolls" is played now I think of it
@@liquidcancer4573 yeah, I would say so.
I basically like both genres and the bands that are with them but if I had to choose one i would definitely prefer Death Metal all the way Thanks RM cheers 🤘👍
Cheers! 🤘
This was a very interesting video. Out of curiosity which of the two subgenres do you prefer?
I don't know, I mostly just listen to Death and Bathory and not much else. :) haha
Yeah this is real quality content But i didn’t know that Destruction was a influence to the Black/Death Bands/Music
look at their first EP. It's as early and as heavy as the early work of the most influential bands of extreme metal.
Black metal is my favorite for 40 years
Cheers!
Death Metal is all about Primitive, gnashing brutality and heavily distorted Down tuned guitars, Black Metal on the other hand is more Atmospheric often and Melodic on its techniques such as tremolo picking and Lo-fi to Raspy vocals.
cheers
Everything what say for black metal is true, even some element from black metal can hear in death metal also..perfekt example is first album from Bathory..but in The Return can hear some few element for death metal in upcoming bands..Bathory give basic start for future black metal genre..Bathory fan forever..
Yes Bathory is more or less all you need. hehe Cheers!
I like both styles, Black and Death are very broad. Whether I listen to one or the other is more a matter of mood. 😎🤘
cheers
i never got into the second wave of black metal. bands. like Dimmu Burgir ; gorgoroth ; etc. bathory Celtic frost; venom and Mercyful Fate were awesome. Death metal bands like Obituary; cannibal, morbid angel; Deicide ; entombed old school bands that clearly had influences from kreator; Sodom almost all of german thrash metal bands. anyway great video as always 👍🤘🤘
yeah, same here the second wave kinda lost me, Dissection are good though.
Celtic frost was definetily more important for the death metal bands too as opposed to the german thrash. Celtic frost is probably in the 5 most important metal bands of all time period😭
for sure@@xraygamer9895
You forgot Emperor the one Black meat band I bought on a recommendation from a co-worker. I am more familiar with early 90's Death metal.
there are tons of bands that werent in this video.
Good job, and I will say there are death metal bands that did do music about anti Christian and satanic lyrics like Deicide
Cheers!
@@RuthlessMetalYT Morbid Angel also sings about that types of subject as Deicide, and they’re both Death Metal bands. I just wanted to say that for my knowledge to death Metal bands like Morbid Angel and Deicide
Aren’t you going to do a best of 2023 video?
I did a short video, check it out.

Points for seperating lofi production and atmosphere for bm
thanks boss. cheers
(the exeption is the so-called "melodic death metal", I personally wouldn't consider it death metal at all)
cheers
The best of both worlds is bands like Behemoth or Belphegor Blackened Death Metal.
This is a big difference with death metal, where the bass is fairly important.
certainly!
I don't like Burzum. I'm not that much into either genre tbh. I would probably go for death metal since it's closest to thrash. hehe.
So which one is more brutal?
DM I would say
One is black and the other one is death
that's correct.
would you say black metal more predominantly european, (at least in the beginning and in general, of course) and death metal more american?
yeah, I definitely agree with that. Especially early on. Death Metal was as popular or perhaps even more popular than black at least here in Sweden back in the day.
Black metal on a mixture of dxm and dph. Death metal when working out
cheers
Because the atmosphere, Bands like Morbid Angel and Immolation are very atmospheric, so these bands sounds darker and more evil like some other Death Metal bands.

@@RuthlessMetalYT Thank you for your videos bro, your videos are very professional.
Both styles can be satanic (ex. Watain and Deicide) and can also be even christian (ex. Antestor and Mortification).
yes sir, cheers.
Black metal bands can't be Christian. If it's Christian it's not black metal
For me is the voice too loudly.. without voice both genre are amazing

Origins? Surely Venom & Death respectively...
hellhammer, slayer, celtic frost, sodom, destruction, kreator, sepultura, etc, etc, etc. ;) and even priest and sabbath if you take it further back. hehe
Thanks for the comparison/contrast. I actually do not like either genre, but as a metalhead, I appreciated the concise summary.
Thanks, Cheers!

if SLAYER!!!!!!! had diff vocal styles, would they be considered Death or Black Metal?
maybe.
Musically Slayer are much closer to death metal than they are to black metal.

Maybe in the same way a lot of early death metal (i would say especially the 85/86-88) era was just using a lot of thrash riffs, then maybe.
I know Possessed is a death metal band but their lyrics are more black metal.
yes sir
Possessed was definitely an influence on black metal!

Death Metal 1000x better
US Power Metal and Euro Power Metal. The difference between Classic Hard Rock and Proto Metal
the first one would make sence. I don't consider proto metal being a genre just a collection of songs that were before their time. :)

RM you've disappointed me there with DM lyrics :D .....it is in the name ....DM lyrics are lyrics about death :P + I would definitely add aggression and nihilism inthere
yeah, can't add everything into a video but this were broad strokes.
Maybe I'm weird... but I feel like Death, despite the name, actually fall closer to the Black Metal side when it comes to how they actually sound.

Clean your ears.
Death metal don't 🔥 churches. Thank you, what is chugging though?
chugging is that kinda simplistic chug chug chug sound.

Great video, as always. Death and Black Metal are the 2 genders of Metal that I really DON'T like.

Even if there are some super groups, 90% of black metal is a joke. Btw an average DM group is mostly decent for any average metalhead.
yeah, if you have a genre that don't pride itself with sounding good, a lot of shitty bands that can't play will aim for that. :D
Most black metal is kind of thrash because the skill floor is so low. Despite that, black metal actually has artistic masterpieces as opposed to death metal.
For me no difference because i don't like and listen black or death metal😂

I say this respectfully - not to be an asshole - but you've missed the point completely. Black metal is an ideology - Satanism put with metal music. Both Mercyful Fate and Blasphemy are black metal - their style of metal (classic, power, thrash, grindcore etc) does not matter.
I said that death metal is less serious and more distant. BM bands takes them selves way too serious. hehe. I don't fully agree with that, let's say a deep purple sounding band starting to add evil themes, that don't make them a black metal band. Kinda like the band Lucifer.
The main difference is that all black metal sucks and death metal sometimes does not. You forgot to mention that.
come on Bathory rules!
