Stay Heavy! Cheers!
No death metal list is complete without Bolt Thrower joining the party. Good job to you!
🤘🤘
Yea no lie. They get no love. I’ve had bolt thrower on IV crusade, for victory, and those once loyal on repeat for so long that its just my daily theme music. Snd my ten year old daughter watched that Salvo video and she is on board now as well. Heartwarming moment. Maroon 5 to Bolt Thrower. Now that’s what’s up
@@johnny_corleone In death metal none crush as hard as Bolt Thrower.
That salvo video is the shit!
Seems like Bolt Thrower are a bunch of 40k nerds🙃!
Bolt Thrower are forever one of my favorite bands.
1 - Death - Scream Bloody Gore
2 - Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum
3 - Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos
4 - Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
5 - Autopsy - Severed Survival
6 - Necrophagia - Season of the Dead
7 - Obituary - Slowly We Rot
8 - Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness
Cheers!
Every single album mentioned here is just an absolute masterpiece of utterly crushing riffage. Consuming Impulse still blows my mind with its insane riffage.
It's amazing how everybody forgets about "Possessed - Beyond The Gates" which also came out before "Scream Bloody Gore".
Beyond the Gates is a great album , but way more to the "Thrash Metal" side of things ...
@@zegonzales1 Definitely. And I mean by the time Beyond the Gates came out, Slayer released Reign in Blood which is heavier than Beyond the Gates, yet not many people call Reign in Blood death metal...
@@Sean-fv4wi Yep , but it's REALLY close to Death Metal .
@@zegonzales1 Agreed. Love the album.
Everything from the atmosphere/vibe to the gatefold artwork.
A lot of the material on Altars was also complete in 86 as per demos.
Proud to say that I own every single one of those albums in VINYL and in the original first press release. And also in the cassette version of them and even the CD version. How lucky I was to live in that era.
What a privilege.
1989, what a year for metal music !!!
One of my favorite Death Metal riffs ever. The Out of the Body riff by Pestilence
Cheers!
Realm of Chaos is one of those albums that just gets heavier and heavier as time passes :3
The first album to downtune the hell of the f***" strings, even heavilly downtuned than Morbid Angel's Covenant
I agree. I personally whould have put Bolt Thrower at #1 and Pestilence at a close second.

@@metalmaniac6667 / damn I miss that magazine.🤘
Terrorizer - World Downfall what a fucking classic!
Absolutely raging album to this day! It’s a fucking masterpiece \m/
DEICIDE Was also making big noise but their first album came in the 1990 . Great list dude, thanks
Cheers!
Atheist's Piece of time should be definitely on the list.
Fantastic list full of fantastic albums. I was glad to see Autopsy so high up on the list as they don't get talked about as much as some others. 1989 is my favorite year of death metal and depending on the day Severed Survival is my favorite death metal record. And you have to mention the sound of Slowly we Rot. My favorite Obituary record and it sounds fantastic, especially for a bunch of strats in standard tuning. I could go on, but anyway great video as always.
severed is a classic but the only autopsy im really into. the bass playing and production is fantastic. they went for muddy production after that
Very hard to find pure death metal without thrash, grind or doom elements in the 80s.
trve
You got the Most ciritical point that everyone debating here.. 👍
What a great list! 10 absolute classics!
My honorable mention is Sepultura's EP Bestial Devastation. Very ahead for its time!
🤘
Is Great it starts and Ends with Pete Sandoval, best death metal drummer ever!
Cheers!
He's still got it too, I saw Terrorizer a couple times over the past few years and he killed it both times
Countmeister here, exclusions for different reasons:
Celtic Frost (too thrashy)
Sepultura (too thrashy)
Sadus (too thrashy)
ND - Scum, FETO (awaiting grind top 10)
Carcass - Reek (awaiting grind too 10)
OLD (awaiting grind top 10)
Unseen Terror (awaiting grind top 10)
ENT (awaiting grind top 10)
And so on. Cheers
🤘
Not enough people talk about Unseen Terror
@@brandonboogers oh well they are High on my grind list Killer for sure
Celtic frost isn't even 100% thrash. It's more first wave of black metal with thrash elements
@@Lazze376 sorry didn’t mean that in a bad sense, they deserve to be talked about much more.
Been waiting for death metal content
It happens, now and then. ;)
I'm gonna bust when he jumps into first and second wave black.
Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness is my favorite. Just as great today as in 89. Timeless album.
Cheers!
I remember when I listened to Altars of Madness in the early 90's with a friend. We were both stunned. Not only the music, but the cover as well is great. One of my favorite Death Metal albums no doubt, with Death's Scream Bloody Gore and Dawn of Possession by Immolation.
Cheers!

I usually don't listen too much to Death Metal, but Scream Bloody Gore is indeed pure Candy for my Ears!
yes, it's a beast!
@@RuthlessMetalYT Beast indeed! \,,/-_-\,,/
Death is probably the best death metal band ever, well that's just my opinion
One of my fav death metal albums too
Just discovered this channel. Instantly subbed!!
So many memories from my youth!!
thanks boss! 🤘
Obituary is great! I listen to that and my blood pressure lowers. It's magic. But I think the version you played must be a new version with the current lead guitarist (who is very kickass).
Cheers!
What a list of total awesomeness. Proud to say I have owned all of these since their release🖤
Cheers!
All these bands have such catchy lyrics, I'm going to be humming these all day now...
the cookie monster approves!
Man you nailed this list. Killer lineup!
The hairs stood up on the back of my neck when slowly we rot came on, still love that song.
I would add Sepultura "Morbid Visions". Even though it can lean more towards the thrash end like "Seven Churches", it has some VERY strong death metal undertones.
i thinks Morbid Visions more like black metal not death
-Bestial devastation
-Morbid Visions
And even Schizophrenia...
@@firecrash6481 and don't forget Beneath the remains
1 Altars of madness - the double lined guitars kill!! Insane drums patterns of pete Sandoval. And the lirical atmospheres of sumerian/Babylonian mythology..
Possessed seven churches will always be the greatest death metal album in my opinion 🤘🏼 great video
Por supuesto, Seven Churches es junto con Scream bloody.....los mejores álbumes por mucho en la historia del Death Metal, en verdad NO hay discusión!! Saludos bro....
The original 1989 Altars Of Madness LP playing now. 🤘😉
Funny detail: an inscription in the middle of the vinyl album says: (side 1) "Fast enough Borivoj?" & (side 2) "Watch out for Terrorizer." 🙂
PS: Martin van Drunen (i.e. Pestilence, Asphyx & Bolt Thrower) is a resident of the same city I live in. Bought there album back in the day too, of course. The strange album cover was made by their record studio. The original one, showing zombies eating each other, apparently was considered a bit too shocking back then. 🤔
🤘
fun fact carcass album cover for necrotisism (yeah its 1991) was a photo shot in a vetinary surgery where kens dad worked in a little village called heswall
Very solid list. Piece of Time was v original. I'd put Consuming Impulse as number 1. Remember buying it after Malleus (which I loved) and being blown away by the sheer heaviness. Out of the Body was my theme tune when I had cancer. Lyrics are so good and relatable. Autopsys, Mental Funeral is probably my fav Death Metal album but as it's a 90s effort it doesn't count here.
I really gotta listen to some of these. That autopsy one was especially good! Cheers!
🤘
'89 is my personal favorite year for extreme metal, so many amazing records! If I could go back in time to see one show or tour, it would be seeing the Grindcrusher tour of that year.
Great video!
Cheers!
Great selection! 🤘
Thank you! Cheers from México!
🤘
Glad I stumbled across this video that's my playlist sorted for my 12hr shift today 🤘
Cheers!
i have been waiting for this since you started ranking thrash albums great video as always sir
thank you Sir!
Great list! I might nitpick though, that isn't the original album version of "Slowly We Rot." btw Altars absolutely is number 1 \m/
Nice and respectable list
I understand people complaining about some bands being more grind or thrashy or so... but at that time, terms were emerging and globally everything that was more aggressive than classic thrash and beyond could be called death metal. Then frontiers between subgenres became clearer in the 90's.
yes, some were leaning towards other genres. :)
Obituary has a bit of a punk vibe, I like it -- nice rundown once again
🤘🤘
You have an awesome channel dude. Hails from Alabama and keep up the good work
Thanks boss
yes altars is my top spot . such a golden era of death metal, just as i was first discovering it. please rank Carcass albums!
That's a cool list, but I'm kinda confused. I mean I don't expect everyone to like Benediction's Transcend the Rubicon or Gorefest's Mindloss, but I was at least expecting
Immolation's Dawn of Possession
Incantation's Mortal Throne of Nazarene and mostly
ENTOMBED's freakin LEFT HAND PATH somewhere between the honorable mentions.. especially if we take into account that Slaughter and Messiah are taking credit for being iconic thrash/death acts.
Left Hand Path is a major omission considering they basically popularised the Swedish signature sound with that album.
@@byronbrimstone5163 Just realized the list is about 80s dm.. although I don't remember it being there in the first place..
There should be a "Part II" for this list by the way , lol ...
Benediction...necessary to me...
Very good list! My kidhood! Sweet melodies and memories! And I'd have included Atheist: Piece of time too, outstanding and unique album.
Glad Obituary - Slowly We Rot made the list. It's number 1 as far as I'm concerned! 🤘
Same here, although Cause of Death and The End Complete are equally good in my book! 🤘
I can get down with this list. I would change some of the records around but overall the list is great. I miss finding bands like these from my early teen years, always searching for the more thrashy or death metal bands was the best.
Jävligt bra koncept och jävligt bra video!
tack och bock, 1990 blir det härnäst.
Self-level work, always exceeding expectations. I'm really excited for when I see the 90s Death Metal rank. I will be very curious to know if "Eaten Back to Life" (Cannibal Corpse) or "Deicide" (Deicide) in which placement it will be. Big hug from Brazil!
thank you, the vote for 1990 is up in my discord server if you want to join and lay your vote! ;)
Great list
Nice list I was wondering why death was so far back than you put leprosy at 2 and they definitely deserve 2 spots.
Most of these showcase the huge influence Seven Churches had on what followed.
yes, that one was a game changer.
Trey all but takes riffs verbatim off of Seven Churches on parts of Altars of Madness.
Great choices. I personally would have included 'No More Color' by Coroner and Rigor Mortis self titled 88' release. Cant really argue with most of your choices. '7 Churches' is so important to the genre, it should be higher. Morbid Angel and Death seems fitting.
🤘🤘
Coroner and Rigor Mortis are thrash. Coroner is pretty experimental but Rigor Mortis is pure thrash. Old time classics. I love those records.
@@thelionisshredding6281 Maybe, I dont think the genres are quite that defined in 1986, you know since I lived it. Coroners first couple of albums might have been thrash but 'No More Colour' and 'Grin' were Death Metal. If you want to get ticky tacky about it you could argue that '7 Churches' was a thrash album too. Like I said though I lived it and in 1986 those were not the defined genres they are today.
That Rigor Morris S/T album was legit! 🔥🔥🔥
Drink from the globet, globet of gore! Keep up the good stuff, man! STAY HEAVY!
🤘🤘
That was a hard one, leprosy could have been number 1 too, but altars of madness is definitely a masterpiece, great job dude
I know they are E.P's , but the first two Sepultura albums are really great. I know most consider them thrash, but I always thought of them as death metal in the early days
Another album I think that would belong to an extended 80's DM list would be Incubus' Serpent Temptation . The vocals deter the band to be consider a full on Death Metal act , but certainly on the Death/Thrash camp . This album is way similar to Altars of Madness , but Incubus released their "debut" before Morbid Angel release theirs ...
Totally forgot about the Necrophagia demo, besides that very spot on
this is full-length albums and not demos.
Nice list, hard to argue the choices even if mine or a robe else’s might be different. I’m gonna (shameless plug alert ) gonna do a top 50 or 100 death/black metal releases of the 80s, and one for the nineties (dm only) and a thrash one (gotta catch up on your thrash lists)
Thanks, Cheers!
napalm death and terrorizer was the originators of death.
Fine list. Pretty much all obvious classics. Not sure I'd include Carcass and Terrorizer since those seem more squarely in the Grindcore realm. And yeah, Seven Churches should be top 5 at least.
sure
If you started digging death metal ore, I suggest you do top 10 slow death metal albums. I do expect Mangled Torsos - ''Drawings of the Dead'' land on the first place. It is truly a masterpiece.
Great list. I agree with everything except Terrorizer. World Downfall is a pure grindcore record, but with some death metal dudes and death metal level musicianship. I will give you Bolt Thrower and Carcass, especially Carcass as they moved way in the death metal direction on Symphonies Of Sickness doing a tour in the US with Death and Pestilence ( who dropped off of the tour at some point). Every record you put on is a classic and has been in constant listening rotation since I was a teenager.
yeah, it's hard to define these things.
Awesome list, though I'm sure everyone has their own opinion on what should and shouldn't have been on this list.
Death is probably my all time favorite band.
It's taken me years to come to this conclusion with the existence of so many other deserving bands out there.
When Death released Human, I was just totally blown away by this album!!!
The first song I heard off the album was Lack Of Comprehension.
At first, I thought, this isn't Death, what is this????
That album set the bar very high that most bands couldn't reath..
Oh, and I would have put Atheist on the list for sure!!!!!!!
The 80s was pretty cool, but the 90s death metal blows it out of the water. Carcass, obituary, morbid angel, death… only got better!
U can say the same for black metal in the 90s as well
That's debatable.
Many people would say Morbid Angel never topped Altars of Madness, that Obituary never topped Slowly We Rot, that Symphonies is the best Carcass and that Death never topped Leprosy.
@@steemonkey2000 i see most people argue every death album is their best besides spiritual healing 😂
Only Carcass got worse to me. There are a few Spiritual Healing apologists around. I think their best is Human.
@@Tempestuous_Might necrotism is godlike . after that though......
10. Beyond the gates (Possessed)
9. Symphonies of sickness (Carcass)
8. Seven churches (Possessed)
7. World downfall (Terrorizer)
6. Slowly we rot (Obituary)
5. Consuming impulse (Pestilence)
4. Realm of chaos (Bolt Thrower)
3. Altars of madness (Morbid Angel)
2. Severed survival (Autopsy)
1. Leprosy (Death)

That’s an excellent list! Are you familiar with “Infected - Dark Century”. In my opinion an awesome album, I am curious what you think of it. Definitely a recommendation, monstrous vocals and bass!
I'm not really into death metal, I just compile the lists as voted by you.
Great list I agree
1. Carcass - Sypmhonies of Sickness
2. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
3. Atheist - Piece of Time
Thanks for making me feel super old.
As if Shout at the Devil turning 40 didn't do it already. lol
time flies Mr Kenny. 🤘
I'm 52 but I don't care. We are never too old for Metal!!
YES!!!! My all time favourite album finally comes out on top. Altars of fucking Madness
Now you have to do the 90's for Death Metal :D
We're having a vote in the discord right now.
Consuming Impulse is my favorite death metal album of any decade
same here.
Guitar sound is a beast on that one.
🤘🤘🤘🤘 Pestilence Consvming Impvlse is my favorite!
Good stuff!
They fucking killed on that tour with Death.
Next month I'll make a tattoo with a coverArt of consvming impulse.
One. I also fucking looooooove that album.
Two. The Atlanta thrashers logo? Helllll yeah. Ive always been a georgia sports guy, and I havent seen anybody rep them for awhile. You got good taste, man.
@@pasqualecurry7773 Oh man, they left when I was 6 dude, I miss them so much! I Hope Atlanta gets a 3rd times the charm chance! We have the Atlanta Gladiators though
Pestilence is the #1 80’s drop for me.
Never was obsessed about categorizing metal but whatever category Morbid Angel fall into they were top of the line. The artwork, the lyrics, the Lovecraft, the Roman Empire, the Black Magic, the pedal drums, the vocals. Way more than your standard gross out contest Death Metal.
Good stuff!
Good to see 'Strappado' at least got an honorable mention... Great list! I own all of them... At least half on cassette 😂🤘
Good stuff! Cheers!
Poison’s “Into the Abyss” is another great one. On the border between Death and Thrash but enough DM elements to qualify in my opinion. Killer album either way.
Even if it was recorded back in the day it wasn't released until 1993.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Right, I guess it was technically only released as a demo tape in ‘87.
Great list! I think the Terroizer album could be considered grindcore and not death, same thing with Repulsion's album which is missing in this list. Maybe I would replace it with Atheist (even when I'm not a fan of prog).
yes, the people voted in terrorizer but maybe its leaning more towards grindcore.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Not leaning, it is grindcore.
And I wouldn’t consider Symphonies of Sickness Death Metal either.... (haven’t watched the rest of the video yet. 😉)
This is a damn good list, the only album I would take out is Autopsy, and replace it with either Possessed's Beyond the Gates/The Eyes of Horror or Celtic Frost's To Mega Therion. I'd put Symphonies of Sickness higher on the list as well. Pestilence's Consuming Impulse is such a monster album, great the whole way through, but Alters of Madness is definitely deserving of the top spot for the 80s.
cheers!
Celtic Frost is death metal? Arent they more black metal than death metal?
@@jeppyjep For that album and that time period I think so.
Consuming Impulse is so heavy, the riffs feel like an iron wall crushing you into pieces
Cheers!
Excelent list! I have nothin to complain, maybe the albums 9 and 10 are more on grindcore (who beside some metal influences, are from the hardcore spectrum)
Now that's a funny thing to say that grindcore has SOME metal influences when in fact it's the most aggressive and brutal manifestation of metal.
All metal sub-genres hatched from somewhere but that doesn't abstract their metal character.
Power metal hatched from speed metal which had hatched from punk which had hatched from garage which had hatched from rock n roll and so on. That the story of music in general.
@@luciferstail2630 sore troat, extreme noise terror, napalm... all the pioneers of the genre came from the punk ethos. Earth Crisis isn’t metal for using metal riffs nor S.O.D are hardcore for using hardcore tempos. Grindcore is actually the most brutal manifestation of... hardcore. I can say the same of bands like siege or capitalist casualties. (Powerviolence is another fast and harsh manifestation of hardcore) the mess with grind and metal begin with death/grind. But, that’s another story...
@@guilhermeptp3954 earth crisis is straight hardcore and I don't think there has ever been any confusion about that matter. The sound is defined by the sum up and not by a few riffs here and there.
S.O.D. is nothing specific really but a blend of styles and genres, that's why the easier way is to place them under the "alt-metal" hat which is a pseudo genre anyway (unless you mean the original S.O.D. which is nothing but standard thrash/crossover and they're not related to the topic).
Grindcore compared to classic hardcore is like night and day and I neither know nor remember hardcore fans adjust to grindcore cause these are two utterly different dimensions. For decades Grindcore considered to be an extreme metal aspect directly related to death and I remember back in the day a huge death metal community embracing Carcass, Napalm, Repulsion, Terrorizer, Impetigo and others at a time when hardcore community didn't care at all.
@@luciferstail2630 it’s not a question of few riffs. In fact, they have many elements of metal, being a hardcore band. And i don’t expect the hardcore community embracing the old carcass for example, specially because they’re more on the death/grind side of things. I don’t think it’s “for decades”. Agatochles for example, always claim the punk roots of grind, expressing their political views in phrases like “grind is protest”. And using the term “mincecore” and express that views on interviews. but the fact is that the oldschool grind came from the british punk scene. I don’t say “hey metalheads, don’t listen to that!” Or something like that. I don’t know why being upset about it. Death/grind is a huge metal thing, specially because after barney join on ND vocals the band became even more death metal. Or the influences of death metal growing harder in grind bands of the 90’s. “I don’t remember” i don’t think it’s a matter of personal impressions. And i doubt that you are old enough to remember that lol
And even it’s the case, ok dude, it’s not like you can’t listen to that. BTW, when i say hardcore, i think more on the fast brittish punk stuff than american hardcore. More on some discharge or rystetiti than bad brains or black flag. Keep that in mind too.
@@guilhermeptp3954 old metalheads is a thing man, considering I was born in late 70s I belong in that spectrum.
"I don't remember" in my case means the glorious late 80s-early 90s.
Personal impressions actually matter big time today as metal has grown in age and younger people just don't know the real sequence of events and most of what my generation experienced is not on Wikipedia.
Your later clarification was rather enlightening actually. I see your point of view.
I would put Possessed in first place. Seven churches it's so good.
yes, I love it too. but I think Leprosy is my numero uno.
Wooorrrrrrllllld Eater!!!! Cool vid.
Those Terrorizer and Carcass releases are grindcore to my ears; for example their sound has very little resemblance to Scream Bloody Gore or Altars of Madness, which are genre defining.
yeah, maybe more in the grindcore category.
You should do top 10 death metal albums from 1991

I'd call Repulsion 'Horrified' an honourable honourable mention as it was recorded in 1986 and released in 1989. But I can't argue with the list. Great list.
Got to love Bolt Thrower. Karl Willets' new band Memoriam's 3rd album, 'Requiem For Mankind' is a modern era, old school, gem. And Obituary still release great albums, as I'm sure you will know, too. Their 10th self-titled one is fantastic. I repeat play it a lot. It made it on to many website and magazine 'best of 2017' lists and even the UK's upper crust newspaper, The Guardian, gave it a glowing 4 out of 5 star review.
Just saying it's great that many of these bands and musicians are still going strong.

Horrified is much more Grind then Death, but yes, its a great album.
Consuming Impulse is my favorite album of all time.

A classic list of albums indeed. Since I wouldn't necessarily consider Symphonies of Sickness or World Downfall primarily death metal, here is my list of favourite 1980's death metal albums:

2. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
3. Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
4. Possessed - Seven Churches
5. Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarium
6. Bolt Thrower - In Battle There Is No Law!
7. Obituary - Slowly We Rot
8. Death - Scream Bloody Gore
9. Death - Leprosy
10. Autopsy - Severed Survival
I would have also probably included Necrophagia on this list if I had heard their work by now.
In the future, I hope to see a video like this but with your personal favourites rather than the internet vote. And I will join your Discord for voting on these in the future.

I must have seen these Top DM/TM records of the year at least 10 times each.
I need more.
In one of those, you mentioned the possibility of doing Top BM records of the year as well.
I understand the genre might not be your forte but I'm still waiting. I would gladly contribute and help you with that if you feel like starting another series for your channel.
The first video could be about BM in the 80s, then 90-92 as there weren't many records recorded within the BM realm really.
Then myriads of bands started in 1993 thanks to Aarseth's circle and Kerrang publishing the article about it.
So from 1993 onwards there can be yearly episodes till like 2001 because BM never really stopped evolving, never faded into obscurity like the previous two branches of metal.
we'll see, I have prepared a lot of videos for the summer so I can take a little break while still posting videos. The issue with these votes is that it can take hours to count and I don't have a good plan on how to do this without the boring extra work. but who knows, I might do that or some other typ of yearly top 10. Cheers!
@@RuthlessMetalYT Cheers for the reply lad. I can imagine it is very time consuming to evaluate the public votes for the lists as they are not limited to a drop down choice so even Google Docs surveys would not be much of a help. And as you're not much into second wave and newer black metal, it would not make much of a sense to do it from your point of view.
On another note, how did you like the new Hellripper release?
yeah, the problem with those is that you can only vote for one and not do a top 10 list of your favourites. Hellripper sounded fine, haven't listened that much to it though. cheers
@@RuthlessMetalYT I thought you'd love it as it's a perfect blend of speed metal, thrash metal and black metal in the late 80s fashion...that kid is not 30 yet, which fills me with hope the good metal of old will never die...when I heard it first, I immediately thought of you and your taste :)
I rarely listen to new metal at all. It needs to be incredible for me to even care these days. :D Cheers!
