Racing the World's Fastest Sedans: Tesla Plaid, Lucid Air, E39 M5 - Drag Race Replay w Jason Cammisa

- Episode 2 of Cammisa's Ultimate Drag Race Replay features today's two quickest accelerating sedans, the 1020-hp Tesla Model S Plaid and the 1111-hp Lucid Air Dream Edition.
But to put their performance into perspective, we use a known benchmark from 20 years ago: the E39-chassis BMW M5. With a 400-hp, 4.9-liter V-8, the E39 was the quickest sedan in the world when it debuted in 2000.
For this drag race, it gets a highway-speed head start: it begins the drag race at 70 mph. Will the Tesla and Lucid catch up within a quarter-mile?
And finally, what about a skydiver? Max Splatterson - a fictional, computer-generated skydiver - begins his race exactly one quarter mile above the finish line. He and the two electric sedans start at exactly the same time. His position during the fall is calculated using math and physics; the cars' positions are thanks to sheer horsepower.
(And a couple other things, like tire grip. And suspension. And aero drag. Whatever. They're really racing.)

Cammisa's Ultimate Drag Race Rewind is a new take on the drag-race video. Shot using multiple angles, it aims to show the race from the perspective of the drivers. And then, Jason does a walkback from the winning car to the losing car, explaining exactly what happened.
The finishing results are determined using industry-standard instrumented testing with a Racelogic VBox and weather-corrected to J1348 standards.

It's amazing how gracefully that E39 has aged, and that engine sounds GLORIOUS!! The Tesla and Lucid are incredible vehicles but that E39 is a beast even today.
Absolutely agreed. They almost should have used a W211 E55 AMG. Only 2-3 years newer, and was the fastest sedan in the world for a few years running. Much, much faster than the E39 too.
Difference is that Tesla and lucid in 20 year are gonna be electric junk
and it is still faster when you look at max speed, which I think is also pretty important, especially due to the Teslas range becoming really slow when driving 200km/h for a while...

It not only beat Porsche’s record, but it did it by a significant 8-second difference.
Looking forward to seeing how Lucid does in comparison. We live in incredibly fast times indeed. Porsche.. Lucid.. Rimac.. you’re up to bat.
Model s plaid with 1000hp lost to the taycan with 645hp around the track by 3 seconds. Then this year they added a track pack varient with track tires and beat the 400 less hp taycan by 8 sec. The difference of using regular street tires vs track is 10 seconds at nurumbring. Without that advantage the regular plaid lost. It also lost too a few other 4 door sedans. Rimac now holds the EV world record and lucid never even attempted a time.
Its all good though enjoy ur glory while it lasts the taycan turbo gt is coming in january. 1000hp+ with their first tri motor car. Also partnered with rimac 😂 taycan is actually a head turner in terms of looks and has a luxury interior. Gl tho buddy 😂
I own a 2002 E39 for 5 months now and my only regret is why I didn’t buy it sooner. Simply an amazing car.

Just came here to say E39 is absolutely gorgeous. Timeless design.
If you will be given all three of these cars in their best condition, no issues at all, and asked to take one after test drive. You probably would take that M5 because it fills so many checks.

@@timelessr9407 I think we will see that in just a few years. The plaid makes the p100d look like childs play while being 1.5 times cheaper. The roadster will be more expensive and will be an actual sports car not a sedan. It is scary to think what Tesla could do with the Roadster.

BMW gave us E39 M5 & E46 M3 back to back, then things went down hill pretty fast.

Chris Bangle also designed some pretty cars, two relevant examples are the E39 & E46.
BMWs with E-** chassis codes in general are excellent. A few exceptions, of course, but when BMW eschewed hydraulic steering and started phasing out manuals, they lost their way. Then they stopped making N/A straight sixes. Detestable.

0:29 gave me a goose bump. I have been owning the E39 M5 for last 4 years and it's a ton of fun every time I take it for a drive.
Kind of happy to see this generation M5 showed up in comparison with the 2 fastest production EV in the market.
Man that E39 M5 just reminds us how beautiful cars were, and the sad thing is there's no way we could see anything like it in the future
I've got a E46 Coupe in my garage for about 8 years now and my plan is to electrify it when i'm on pension if i'm hopefully still alive of course.
unfortunatly i think the government will ban gasoline vehicles except for the super wealthy so I'm probbaly forced to electrify it
@@PutsOnSneakers I don't think I'd mind an electric E39/E46. Would make the wheels spin a lot easier for sure with that instant torque. My only gripe is no engine noise to accompany the rubber being burned.

@@BrainFuck10 The blanket ban of combustion cars isn't going to come any time soon because we're talking about over a billion vehicles on the road, how the vast majority of people get around. That being said, they are being pushed out of city centers and certain towns and in a few decades I can see general bans coming down once we hit a certain saturation point. Once you ban the sale of new combustion cars it's only a matter of time before they fall by the wayside due to attrition (accidents & poor maintenance) and people trading in their combustion cars for new or used electrics. And there's the question of the long-term viability of gasoline production.
LOVE IT!!!! This guy and the whole production team are my favorite car journalists so far. I love cars, but the way they put the reviews with their creativity and charisma is excellent.

@@nickyd922 I've had 2, no issues more than old car related stuff. Never left me stranded. Maintenance is key to all cars, rings true to 20 year old BMW M cars aswell.

@@Martink9191 it is not exceeded in all situations, in fact if you want to cross any distance greater than 400km the electric car loses from the start because the battery is charged in a few hours while at m5 you recharge it in 3 minutes and start again on the road.
