0:25 this is why game preservation and outright education should be valued.
So, so many HUGE mega classics have essentially became "forgotten gems" the past few years, simply because their publishers hate their legacy IPs.
Yeah, this game was "just" THE trilogy made by NaughtyDog in the early 00s, and was essentially the mascot saga for PS2 for many years.

Great review, handled with wisdom! This provides such a clear picture of the game compared to what I'd get by just doing a first playthrough myself! The in-game voices were so quiet compared to the rest of the audio, without subtitles the story can be really hard to follow. I didn't know it was also so acclaimed, very cool!

Honestly the movement and combat is so buttery smooth. Best controls of any 3D platformer of its era. Maybe ever.

The fact that they were able to do no loading screens in an open world with just 32 mb of ram with just the DVD drive and no HDD while still maintaining the visual fidelity high at 60 FPS is insane. Even on cutting edge PCs with like 20 times more ram and fast HDD there was just not a game that could do all of that until years later. In the mid to late 2000s (i think) when i first played this game, you have no idea how huge the jump from PS1 Crash Bandicoot to Jak And Daxter was to me, i think the jump of PS2 was the best in terms of 3d. No linear camera like Crash while still rendering like 1000 times more things and with better textures. Nowadays a modern open world game can look worse than a previous gen more linear game.
This game is just a proof that optimization skills would always surpass superior hardware.

SHE PUT IN THE '200MER' CLIP!!! Killer review, as always! It's a special review for me, since this is the first Zoomer Review for a game that I got to watch you play! I didn't even know 'Jak and Daxter' was this significant a game. I assumed it was another one of those 'Sly Cooper'/'Ratchet and Clank' kind of games. There are so many monumental game series that I feel like I missed out on, and it's nice getting to live the experience through your streams and these Zoomer Reviews. Thank you!
PS. Thank you Papi for falling on the sword for all of us, and putting yourself through that accursed fishing minigame. Now, to show our respect to your bravery, we all give eels the stank eye whenever we see them. 😒

I'm glad to see this oldie get the attention it deserves; it really spearheaded the whole 3D platformer genre.
I do feel compelled to tell you that Jak and Daxter aren't actually related.
Jak actually only has two relatives in the series (the uncle in Sandover, and a character from Jak 3 that I don't want to spoil for you if you ever get around to it).

I remember the crazy trailer they had for this game, back in the day. A huge seamless world filled with interesting locations and characters really set the bar high going into the ps2 era. Coupled with the day night cycle that truly brought the game to life makes this a amazing game even today.

Daxter is an Ottsel which is a combination of an otter and a weasel. In terms of his species, there's more than meets the eye. All will be revealed in Jak 3.
Speaking of cosplay, I often cosplay as Ratchet (I have a Clank backpack) but I sometimes cosplay as PaRappa The Rapper. Coincidentally, I almost have the same height as Ratchet. Ratchet is canonically 5"0 while I'm 4"9.

I never grew up with this one, but picking it up a few years ago made me see that this game is actually really impressive for the time, and especially for releasing so early on in the ps2’s life. it’s open world honestly is kind of comparable to stuff like breath of the wild and the way everything is interconnected feels a bit different from other collectathons at the time which had self contained levels accessible by a hub world. The environments are colorful and detailed, the animation is very smooth.

I just finished this. This came out when I was a teenager and I got an Xbox rather than a PlayStation 2 (no, not for Halo, it felt like the Dreamcast 2 and it was the Hunter and SEGA titles that lured me in) so I played this off and on but never finished it, until playing my backlog because there's nothing really to play at present...... But, you can tell this is Naughty Dogs first attempt and this kind of gameplay. It's very reminiscent of Crash Bandicoot and the world has that old-school Naughty Dog feel, but you can tell it's a first attempt. The controls are really floaty and I ended up retrying for areas for up to an hour of die and retry feeling like I wanted to launch the controller across the room (GamerRage) and even switched out my controllers to make sure my controller wasn't crapping out. I even wondered at one point if Pressure Sensitive buttons were a real thing on PlayStation 2 and if that was really implemented into the game (as Naughty Dog, like Kojima, likes to do using every bit of tech for the hardware) because I guess there's no pressure sensitive buttons on the Dualshock 4 so..... And you'd think that the enemies and bosses would be your worst enemy in the game but they're not, the camera is. Depth perception is a must in platformers and when you can't see enough ahead of you or above you or whatever, then it's a blind leap of faith, a blind leap of faith to your death. It felt like Naughty Dog had a group of guys that were pure sadists whose job it was to make certain parts of the game require such precision that they'd want to watch playthroughs and just watch the GamerRage seep through (getting through those purple and blue rings..... Brings my piss to a boil just thinking about it). Or in the Spider Cave trying to swing on those posts, what a nightmare because the controls weren't consistent. Sometimes it would let you swing endlessly, other times would let you circle once and then drop you to your doom. I had to shut the game off several times and come back in a calmer less anxiety induced state. The CAMERA WAS A NIGHTMARE! and the controls were wonky and inconsistent. Head up those platforms to the final boss and then trying to get to the top of those three half platforms, talk about merciless and again, sadists, I missed my jump because I could see what was above me because the camera got blocked and, what a nightmare. Other than that, not bad for a first jump into that area. It's definitely not Naughty Dogs best and doesn't exude Naughty Dog quality they insist on now. From Uncharted: Drake's Fortune on, that's Naughty Dog quality 👍🏻
