I always thought that jak went with the precursors in the end to 'be Mar' and then came back to that exact moment. That's why you see him enter the ship and then just a show up behind daxter.
Anyone else remember activating the unlimited ammo cheat, walking through the Haven City battlefield and nuking everything in sight, and that 3 seconds of silence that came after.
It's kinda weird, Jak says the Dark Makers don't work well with others as the Metal Heads can attest... except there's literally no reason he should know that, as neither the Metal Heads nor Precursors actually tell him that, it makes out as if Errol will be betrayed by the Dark Makers... but he never is betrayed, and none of the Dark Makers even show the ability to communicate.
@JAYDOG1337A the idea is that he is named after the original but later becomes the original, but yeah Jak 3's completed story is explain in the Jak 3 Precursor Bible, what they had in mind for Jak 3's story is not what we had the idea of, appearance Jak's planet was never finished and they were supposed to mention that ingame in jak3 but didn't even do that
14:50 I always thought Daxter expected it to be a communication device so they could talk with Damas or Kleiver, so when nobody spoke after Jak pressed the button he thought it was broken.
I was all for Erol returning as the main antagonist of this game as I liked him in Jak 2 and always liked his rivalry with Jak... but why is he now a KG robot? How was he pieced together after dying in a dark eco explosion? Who or what rebuilt him? Why is he now hell bent on world destruction/domination? Why does he know the Dark Makers? How can he contact them? Why does his name now have an additional R in it? Why, after Jak's initial "Errol!", does nobody express any concern, confusion, bewilderment, or even acknowledgement of his return?
Your videos on the Jak series wete pretty well done! I was wondering why they didn't have so many views and I just realized that your channel is New so just wanted to throw some positive encouragement! Another nice video. I just recently replayed 2 and 3, and the jist of my thoughts were "2 is a little bit of a mess, 3 is a lot of a mess. Still fun though." Although if you've ever heard the original pitch for Jak 3, the messiness becomes more understandable. The idea was going to be that the villains were the Precursors themselves. After learning that the Metal Head leader was dead, they were going to come back in and finish building the planet. However, they never intended for there to be so many factions and species, so they would make an announcement that they would pick the strongest and kill the rest. This would, of course, send everything straight to hell, with every faction fighting every other faction to be the chosen ones, with Jak stuck in the middle trying to keep everyone alive and presumably unite them against the Precursors. Would have made for some good marketing, attacking and dethroning god and all, but it's a very ambitious plot to try and make in just a year, and they obviously ran out of time and had to stitch together whatever they had. Who's the big bad now? Random aliens! Why is Erol working for them? Because he hates all life now! Ultimately, what matters is the game we got, not the game we could have had, but it's hard not to see it as a gigantic missed opportunity. I look forward to seeing what you'll do next. If you've got other PS2 platformers on the brain, Sly Cooper was always my favorite of the bunch. I even made my own video essay about it a few years ago, if you're interested in that sort of thing.
The 11 month development cycle really hindered things, it’s probably also why half the game world is Haven again and the other half is a desert, they just didn’t have time to do everything they could’ve done with the title. All said and done, I still think it’s a solid game if a little haphazard with its story
@@Snoop_Dugg I learned it from another video essay from a channel called B Mask. Look him up, he's great. And he got it from the official Jak 3 Design Bible, so it's most likely true.

I think Jak is simply named Mar to honor his ancestors or something. I'm assuming Ashlin calls him "The Mar" is because she probably knew Damas's son was missing and that his name was Mar. Have no clue why they chose to name him Mar with no explanation but he definitely isn't THE Mar that built the city.
How do you know he definitely isnt? The game doesnt confirm nor deny whether he actually is the Mar that built Haven City. Since the statue of Mar shown in Jak 2 is of someone much older than Jak appears to be in Jak 3, so who's to say that couldnt be him just much later in his life deciding to go back in time and do what Mar was supposed to do.

@EYBeats Oh, I absolutely agree! The variety and abilities in Jak 3 are truly excellent. To this day, I still love Flash Freeze. But I think Naughty Dog made the city too small in Jak 3 compared to Jak 2. Sure, it's a pain to travel around the city in Jak 2, but at least you still have that freedom. Also, the jetboard stadium was destroyed in Jak 3. I really miss the craziness of that place, (not the zoomer races, though, because those were awful).
Jak 3 was the first game ever that I pre-ordered as a kid and then spent three weeks raging why it took so long to arrive. Of course I only later realised it's because the game hadn't actually released yet when I ordered it... Then me and my brother were glued to the tv as we played this 24/7 and even if overall it's not as solid story wise as Jak 2, I still enjoy it a ton, the new powers and weapons really make the gameplay even more fun and the desert driving is nice, no wonder they made a race game next. I also remember the utter whiplash with Jak 3's ending, after they had spent the first two games setting up Jak and Keira together only to... suddenly go for Ashelin? I still don't know why on earth they did that, but glad they realised their mistake and fixed things in Jak X, because it was just weird.
I believe that Precursers just have 2 forms. One TRUE form that is the shiny ghost man, which lets them create eco and bend reality and the physical ottsel one that they morph into to be able to actually affect the physical relm (make robots and build stuff).

This is the one Jak game I actually finished all the way through. Im kinda glad to find out that even if I had known more English back then, the plot wouldn't have made much more sense to me.
The Jak is Mar subplot really needs some kind of resolution. The man seemingly built Haven and a bunch of magic pyramids. Jaks a tough guy and a hard worker but architecture is hardly his thing. Its easier to say that Mar is his descendent (Im going to say on his mothers side) and Jak was named after him as a boy due to his lineage. Mar may not be fully human(elf?). In the way that Daxter was transformed into a precursor from falling into Dark Eco it stands to reason that Precursors can change into elves. This means Jak has precursor blood which would explain why he can harness Dark and Light energy without dying.
I really appreciate your work on these Jak videos, they're a nice watch while I slack off at work. When you learn 3 only had a 13 month development period it's pretty obvious why it's so functionally similar to Jak 2. They did add in many important features (weapon variety, vehicle variety, armor, etc), but it certainly feels like a very 'safe' sequel focusing more on continuing the story (and even then, it still leaves a *lot* of room for the future) than innovating on it's formula like Jak 2 did for 1. I still really like what Jak 3 did, the new Light Jak powers are a great idea, as is the lowered overall difficulty, but it definitely feels under-developed in a lot of ways. As for the Mar thing, that's a huge theory crafting thing on its own, but Naughty Dog's original concept of 3 involved a far less 'benevolent' concept of the Precursors and would feature Mar himself at some point in the story. It's another example of how the time crunch really kept the game from exploring concepts. Are you going to continue to Jak X or The Lost Frontier?
I've played the HD trilogy version of this and didn't like the 2nd and 3rd game since it's gameplay needed more refinement when it came to combat(think a much more looser DMC) along with the story doing stuff that's more confusing to the overall story of the Trilogy. I think a simple change would have been Jak and Daxter being teleported to another section of the planet from precursor tech than a time machine that their friend made somehow in a past timeline. Other elements should have been kept in like the Eco Sages since they were the strongest with each type of Eco. Just imagine if certain enemies were powered by different types of Eco, that would have really made combat constantly change with the same enemies.
Jak isnt THE Mar. hes the heir of Mar and is named after him. The descendants wear an amulet as a symbol of their lineage. It was Ashelin who thought he was the same Mar who built Haven City. Unless they manage to make that work in another Jak game (as when I asked Jason Rubin that question, he said he cant answer it as its for new games to answer) then we just have to base the answer on what we have currently. Its similar to Nathan Drake wearing the ring as he said hes inherited it, even though thats not true but true with the Jak series.
Great vids, keep them up! Gotta say though when I played this as a kid, the whole darkmakers plot blew my mind and really got my imagination racing! The atmosphere of the trip to the forest leading to the creepy view through the ancient telescope had me envisioning millenia of forgotten wars between the precursors and the dark makers. I thoroughly enjoyed the vagueness and widened scope back in the day despite how goofy it seems from my current perspective. I understand you've tried to remove nostalgic bias from your analysis, but I believe it's also important to consider the story from a more childlike perspective, since that was their target demographic.
Why do people get so butthurt about the gameplay not changing. People loved the 2nd game, why fix what's not broken with the gameplay? They added new stuff but left what worked alone.
I think you always focus a bit too much on how absurd the story of some of these games is, always sounds like you're hating on it for the whole video until at the end you say "Its still fun to play and I recommend it". I think you should focus more on how enjoyable each section of the game is to play. As always though amazing job and great videos.
I literally grew up with Jak 3, I know this game by memory. However, by playing it nowdays, I realize how the story is quite approximate. So i think that the entire franchise needs a sort of reboot
One of the funniest things in Jak 3 is how suddenly Jak is very into Ashelin. Neither Torn or Keira have a problem with this. Keira has like 2 lines in the whole game and a different voice actress, I think. In Jak X, all of the original love interests from Jak 2 are back together with no explanation. lol Jak 2 and 3 came out only a year apart from each other. That probably explains the story issues. Still, it's impressive just how much Naughty Dog got done in a year or less. Each game in the trilogy excels at something: Jak 3 for best shooting gameplay, Jak 2 for story, Precursor for collecting and platforming.
I love this game as well, but that said I definitely feel like they could polished the gameplay with a little more effort and mad the transformations more viable and easier to use. For instance with dark Jak I propose with that strength he had he should be able to grapple enemies to throw and knockout other enemies and be able to configure the electric attacks to be more useful in combat. Light Jak should act as smooth transition to defense and give you ACTUAL flight which would make it easier for roaming across long distances instead flopping like a fish in the air hoping you don’t run out of wind you gust up to get the next platform. Physics and camera while improved slightly from the last entry could have been done better to be more flawless and not clunky. The weapons though fun, I feel could have also been paired nicely with melee weapons considering the fighting with the fists needed a change up too in my opinion. The story could have used a little more work or just acquire a better fantasy writer because the characters are so good personality wise there really wasn’t much room for them to be fleshed out with the script that was given. Overall I think the Jak series are gems but could do with a proper reboot.
This is the only game I hold high in my gaming tier list. I played jak and daxter when I was little, then I played jak 3 before jak 2 and I was wowed by everything jak 3 had, I went back to jak 2 and realized how many mechanics jak 3 has that improved from jak 2. Jak 3 is the best!!!! Not enough words to describe it.
I don't know if you are into 2D platformers as well but I was wondering if you would like to check out Captain Claw (1997) at some point. It's an abandonware PC game but it has a very detailed fansite called The Claw Recluse.
Yes a great game, but...I was never a big fan of Erol being the main villain. I would have preferred if they brought back Gol and Maia to team up with the Dark Makers. Two Sages who studied Dark Eco would have made more sense. Not some guy you race twice in the second game. They even teased their possible survival at the end of Jak and Daxter.
I disagree, I think that Eroll should've been removed, he's just some guy, he's not important to the world as a whole. The Dark Makers felt like a serious threat, and were an interesting addition to the lore, the main problem was that they had no personality.
They’re an interesting threat sure, I just don’t think they fit within the overall theme of what the games provide. Evil space aliens just doesn’t mesh in my mind, but to each their own. If you enjoyed them, I’m not going to sit here and pretend you’re wrong for liking it
Yes, it is. And I'll play the game again as soon as the OpenGOAL team releases an official port to PC since the PS4/PS5 version is practically unplayable, my PS3 where I had the HD collection is practically dead and PCSX2 has language issues and no music on main menu.
I think my least favorite part of this game is that there is so many little min games, car races, animal races, turret shooting, it takes out the adventure aspect the first two games had
I think the real problem comes in with UNCHARTED. It seems this game was rushed out the door at the end of ps2 life cycle when this CLEARLY should of been made for ps3(just imagine having Jak Online right now while hunting as a wastelander and racing in the desert and having arena battles😞🥶😶🌫️). Whether Uncharted 1 was pushed back until around 2009 or Naughty Dog decided to wait it after its release there’s no denying we would of got a Jak game with a longer story, UPGRADED graphics and, a possible online component and the hype would definitely spawned a sequel. If only Sony and Naughty Dog hadn’t of been so short sighted…
I think my main focus right now is titles from around the 2000-2010 era. At some point I would like to go more recent, but I like seeing how well 10-20 year old games hold up nowadays
the dark makers were kind of a smart explanation for why the precursors exist, tbh. not the best execution tho. what bugs me the most about the game is the overly grim atmosphere, the seemingly unfinished bits (like the large desert that has fuck all to do in it) and the unfun minigames.
Another reason why the Dark Makers are stupid - the Precursors already HAD an arch-enemy! The Metal Heads! Introducing a second arch-enemy with zero foreshadowing in the previous game is just sloppy writing. Also, they just kinda start appearing as regular enemies after the Errol boss fight. With zero fanfare or acknowledgement. So a lot of players didn't even notice they were fighting the big, bad Dark Makers in Act 3. And how did they even get here? I thought they were still en route to the planet. It makes no sense.
Do you know who Powercell ZEKE is? Also Jak's Time stop power is basically Dio Brando's ZA WARUDO also the dark eco crystal looking at them from 2023 makes feel like they are created by Twilight Sparkle
Jak 3 is fucking beautiful Whilst the story and atmosphere was better in 2 3 had such a good combination of Magic Power combat with Evolved Guns Made up for Jak's nerfed Combat in Jak 1
Don't you bullshit you know this is one of the best game series known to mankind I can't even say second to Ratchet & Clank a genuine and couldn't say if Ratchet & Clank or Jak and Daxter are better one to the other I think they just exist in their own beautiful universe of old- Schoolynes
They should really just reboot this game and fix up the story. Take their time with it and release it as a finished product in 3 games and people would buy that shit left and right. Single player games are THRIVING rn and this would make whoever produces it loads of money
Jak III improved the gameplay in many ways but the story really felt ridiculous and much of a downgrade from Jak II's excellent story telling and pacing.
As a fanboy of this series growing up, you really served to highlight just how absurd the story gets at times lol.

Thank you for mentioning the camera code that took me 18 years to find
I understand you've tried to remove nostalgic bias from your analysis, but I believe it's also important to consider the story from a more childlike perspective, since that was their target demographic.
jak 2 3 and x are my favourites of any franchise, jak x is just awesome fun
Why do people get so butthurt about the gameplay not changing. People loved the 2nd game, why fix what's not broken with the gameplay? They added new stuff but left what worked alone.
Dude I discovered you this morning and went like huhhh third episode not out yet so sad i cant do all of them in a row
lmao thanks and gg
bro should have more subs fr i be watching you at 3 am
pretty fun but too easy, being able to heal and having all those op guns and ammo is never an issue
I think you always focus a bit too much on how absurd the story of some of these games is, always sounds like you're hating on it for the whole video until at the end you say "Its still fun to play and I recommend it". I think you should focus more on how enjoyable each section of the game is to play.
As always though amazing job and great videos.
Fair enough, yeah. I’ll keep that in mind moving forward!
In Jak X, all of the original love interests from Jak 2 are back together with no explanation. lol
Jak 2 and 3 came out only a year apart from each other. That probably explains the story issues. Still, it's impressive just how much Naughty Dog got done in a year or less. Each game in the trilogy excels at something: Jak 3 for best shooting gameplay, Jak 2 for story, Precursor for collecting and platforming.
this is one of those games where you played as a kid and was a lot harder then to playing now where the hard parts are just super easy
I feel that, somehow I always hated starting a new game because of that dark eco button press miningame in the beginning.
I think Jack going with the precursors at the end was a comp put for the while mar thing. He does reappear without the armor.
Loved this game as a kid, but yeah looking back...
What was even going on?
Loved this game as a kid, didnt pay attention to the story but had a blast doing the missions and causing havoc in the flying cars lol.
If you enjoyed them, I’m not going to sit here and pretend you’re wrong for liking it
One minor thing I didn't really like was how they messed up dark jak's design they didn't change it that much but I still
Well one things for sure, you can't please everybody. You can do your best to make a game and it won't be enough to appease everyone.
@18:17 is what you came for. I have no idea why the past 18 minutes were used as they were
I think the real problem comes in with UNCHARTED.
Thanks for making great videos that keep the conversation going on these games. I cherish my early teen years spent playing these games.
You should totally cover the first two oddworld games
the mini games was always fun
I really like your videos! I hope you do plenty more
That's the plan!
6:00 “while he does have some fun abilities i never found uses for them outside the set areas designed around it”
Unlimited flight glitch homie.
The time travel originally made sense when it was simply young Jak and Samos going to the past in Jak II, but this went cuckoo bananas really quickly.
dam dude my little kid brain thought the jack trilogy was the best thanks for the vids man !
I am so grad you popped into my feed, UA-cam is doing something right at least.
Tell Sony to natively port the sly collection on ps5 store with the original ps2
Games natively ported to ps5
And Ratchet and Clank.
Man i loved Jak 2 and i didnt even remember playing this as a kid. Jak 2 was way better...
Hi friend, great video. Love this comedic review of one of my childhood favorites. Would you perhaps consider covering the Sly Cooper series?
Sly Cooper is definitely on the docket!
@@extrapyxel Awesome! Please keep up the awesome content.
No promises, but I'm pretty sure Jak isn't THE Mar, but is rather a dependant named after him.
❤
8:00 It should actually say "Erolll" in the subtiles, for carying the L from the previous game
wow… didn’t have to wait at all. nice!
So... what kind of games/content would you like to review, Pyxel?
I think my main focus right now is titles from around the 2000-2010 era. At some point I would like to go more recent, but I like seeing how well 10-20 year old games hold up nowadays
Do you think you'd be up for posting gameplays for the series you make reviews on?
Eventually I would love to stream the play throughs as I go, unfortunately I don’t have the set up to support that right now.
the dark makers were kind of a smart explanation for why the precursors exist, tbh. not the best execution tho.
what bugs me the most about the game is the overly grim atmosphere, the seemingly unfinished bits (like the large desert that has fuck all to do in it) and the unfun minigames.
I never played it, but I really want to now :)
You didn't mention Tess getting turned into an Ottsel (Precursor) nor Daxter getting pants.
good shit, I subbed
Love these type of videos! Are you gonna do the daxter game too? I’d watch it
I certainly plan to at some point. For right now though, I plan to look into some other titles/franchises!
Ty for the review ❤
hes arm was red and glowy, also scary so we just let him go
Do you know who Powercell ZEKE is?
Also Jak's Time stop power is basically Dio Brando's ZA WARUDO
also the dark eco crystal looking at them from 2023 makes feel like they are created by Twilight Sparkle
Now you gotta do Jak X
Jak 1 and 2 are amazing. 3 is mid.
Hope you will cover the sly cooper trilogy
AHMAZING GAMES. LOVED 2 &3
If naughty dog is reading this please contact me about a Jak 4 story idea
Jak 3 is fucking beautiful
Whilst the story and atmosphere was better in 2
3 had such a good combination of Magic Power combat with Evolved Guns
Made up for Jak's nerfed Combat in Jak 1
Don't you bullshit you know this is one of the best game series known to mankind I can't even say second to Ratchet & Clank a genuine and couldn't say if Ratchet & Clank or Jak and Daxter are better one to the other I think they just exist in their own beautiful universe of old- Schoolynes
They should really just reboot this game and fix up the story. Take their time with it and release it as a finished product in 3 games and people would buy that shit left and right. Single player games are THRIVING rn and this would make whoever produces it loads of money
Wow 99% of your subscribers likes your video. Havent seen ratios that good since a time ago
Jak III improved the gameplay in many ways but the story really felt ridiculous and much of a downgrade from Jak II's excellent story telling and pacing.
