Dairy Queen Burger -- 1st one ever

  • This griddle burger is a replica of the very first Dairy Queen burger ever made - by a viewer’s Dad back in 1950-ish, before DQ ever offered any food. It’s a fantastic story, and this original Dairy Queen burger was great! With two unique additions that you typically don’t see on burger menus - sliced red cabbage and old-fashioned chili sauce - this burger is unique but also familiar! Because of the combination of mayo and chili sauce (which is like a rich, gourmet ketchup), I would compare it to a Whopper.
If you want to try a new burger recipe on the griddle, then give this “Dean’s Dairy Queen” burger a try! Now all that’s missing is a Blizzard on the side!

Neal and Amy, this brought tears to my eyes! Thank you for honoring my father, it means a lot. We had customers regularly tell us they would drive past 2 other DQ's for our burgers. Another funny story, when my dad watched a patty cook, he could tell if his meat processor was using too much fat, and on a couple of occasions he would grab a patty and say "let's go" and we would drive over to the place and he would make the owner test that fat ratio and my dad was always right. The other thing I should have mentioned is we let the first side cook until the liquid/fat pooled on the top before we flipped it. You might think it dried the burger out, but it didn't. Assembly-wise, you came real close to the original masterpiece. We used more onions, but your dice was pretty spot on. Up until his passing, my grandfather would dice up 50 pounds every morning. He loved onions and would eat them like apples :) I appreciate you guys!

@@jarontaliman1 It was near the southwest corner. Gas station on the corner and then my dad's DQ. After AZ DQ ran it into the ground, it became a car lot, later a Mexican restaurant and I haven't stopped by there in 5-6 years, but I understand the building has since been torn down. Back in its heyday, the Kon Tiki hotel was across the street and the AZ mental hospital on the northeast corner. I can't remember what was on the southeast corner though.

The ole fashioned way is lettuce, tomato pickles and onions to keep your bottom bun from getting saturated with juice from your burger. That’s just how it was and still works. I KNOW. BECAUSE I DID IT. great job on it.

I actually buy the precut salad mix which has about 10% cabbage in it and use it for my burgers, fish, and shrimp. The wife is growing kale. I even add it because it is a super food. Now as far as these people that don't like the healthy vegetables on the bottom, well tell them to flip the burger over and the healthy vegetables will be on top. "I'll be here all week". On another note when I was 10 years old I was cutting neighbors yards making $2.00 per yard, yea, you read it right $2.00. My mom owned an Arts and Craft store. It was on the corner of the main street with a side street and a bridge. There was a bayou behind her shop. When you crossed the bridge and came to the light there was a Dairy Queen across that road. During the summer I would go with her to her shop and help out. Every afternoon I would ask her if I could go out back and look at fish in the bayou. Little did she know I actually would walk to the Dairy Queen and buy something. Usually it was their ice cream cone. It was 25 cents. Today you can't even get just the cone for 25 cents. Man, the memories from a video, gotta love it. Great Job!

That looks awesome. I can't seem to do the leaner hamburger anymore. It seems too dry in my mouth. I've switched to 75% and that seems palatable for me. Perhaps someone knows what's going on there.

I agree with you on the fat ratio, but being that it wasn't smashed at all, it really worked. Form the burger in a ring mold 1/2 in larger than the bun. Season liberally, and when it starts to juice up, flip it. Pull the bottom bun and when you get it dressed up the top is done. You'll be surprised just how juicy it is. I know because I probably ate 8,000 of them :)

A little more Dairy Queen culinary history. Texas DQ’s have a different menu such as belt buster hamburger, chicken fried steak sandwich and crunchy tacos since DQ sold a master franchise for the state. DQ purchased the master franchise around 1980 but the stores refused to change the menu. DQ has 2 apps for the US.

The toppings/condiments on the bottom totally ruin it for me. It totally changes the textures in your mouth and how it affects one’s palate. Back in the day I used to go to Subway and all of the toppings were put on top of the meat, now they’re underneath the meat. Totally changed it for me. I like to feel the crunch of the lettuce etc soon as I bite into the bread, not after I’ve bitten all the way through the sammie.
