A Vintage Chest Makeover - Boring Brown to Gorgeous Green

  • This plain little brown box sat in our storage shed for a very long time. Pushed to the back over and over, we kept choosing more "exciting" projects to make over instead.
    I'm not even certain what this is for sure... is it a tool box... a blanket chest? All we knew for sure was that this little box/chest was covered in layers and layers of some sort of thick, drippy, glossy, UGLY shellac or varnish. It did have lovely dovetailing though and its straight lines and utilitarian look lent themselves to heavily to an industrial look (which we're always down with).
    So, we carried it down from the shed and this ugly duckling chest finally had its day in our workshop. This makeover was definitely not complicated or difficult in any way. But with a few minor upgrades, we were able to give this piece a new lease at life and hopefully it will soon have a new place as a cherished piece of furniture in someone's home. In fact, I was even trying to think of somewhere it could go in our home, I loved this makeover that much!
    Thanks for watching along and happy transforming my friends!

    At first I was hoping you would strip and stain to show off the dove tailed corners, but I really love what you chose for this piece. Also, I'm a quilter so the stack of quilts make a crowning glory.

    No primer? Sorry if it’s a stupid question I’m new to this

    • @BrickHouseVintageDIY
      @BrickHouseVintageDIY  2 місяці тому +1

      It ultimately depends on the finish, whether or not primer should be used. On this piece, it was heavy distressed so the primer wasn't needed and the ultimate test is the type of finish used. You usually don't have bleeding problems with wax, at least that I've ever seen over the years we've been doing furniture. Where you tend to run into the most problems is with poly/clear coat finish. You always run the risk painting a lighter color over darker finish/wood, but the clear coat/poly is what can really draw the stains and tannins out from below. Sometimes months or a year or two after you finish it, but it can still happen.
      That being said, rule of thumb is if you *arent* going for a heavy distressed look like this, I would prime. Two, if you are using a light color (white, gray, yellow, etc) over dark wood, I would prime unless you go with a wax finish *and* heavy distress the piece. Three, if you are going to poly as a finish, expect it to bleed so you'll definitely want to prime as necessary.
      Best of luck with your projects! 😊

      @@BrickHouseVintageDIY thanks a lot mate, I’m restoring a pine box from the 1920s and I’m very torn about the use of the primer. On one hand the wood has nice grain and knots so I’d like that to show through the paint, but on the other hand the wood is full of termites’ holes and previous and new touch ups that i don’t want to show. I don’t know what to do 😭 priming and painting would fix everything but the box would lose all its character. Woodworking is extremely philosophical and I wasn’t expecting that

    • @BrickHouseVintageDIY
      @BrickHouseVintageDIY  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, pine and other softwoods in particular tend to bleed a lot through the knots, even years or decades old sometimes they still give trouble. Might be OK with a piece that old, but I'd still be cautious.
      Personally, if it was me I'd probably clean it up and just seal it with a poly... Let the character and uniqueness show through while at the same time giving it new life and protection.
      Also depends on if you are going to keep it or sell it, and what the trends are by you. We haven't been painting furniture for quite awhile now for a few reasons, but one being the trends and what is "in". At the height of our business, painted furniture was in and sold like crazy by us. Things have changed since then and the original vintage/antiques are back in again, or pieces that are some variance of wood finish (refinish, bleached, unfinished, etc). So if selling, your market will drive what you "should do". If doing for yourself, I'd say do whatever you are going to love and just prep it accordingly. 👍🏼

    • @BrickHouseVintageDIY

      You are correct - I actually didn't realize it until after painting (because I never stood back far enough to really notice, to be honest) and Heather pointed it out. I debated moving it to center because it bugged my OCD, but the other part of me wanted to keep it where it was as part of the original "character". 😉

    That blanket chest is really old. It has nice hand made dovetails. Too bad you didn’t restore it. The lock is not original.

  • @karendooks6244
    @karendooks6244 2 роки тому +1

    What a shame, no primer used , primer does extend the life of a paint finish, that's what it's designed for. Castors are great, pity about the distressed look. Might as well just cleaned the original finish, put the hardware on and left it at that.

  • @pm2886
    @pm2886 2 роки тому

    While the "aged" green is stunning, this kind of treatment should only be used on modern pieces. That chest is genuinely old (hand dovetailing indicates considerable age - probably over 150 years), and thus should NEVER be painted. Gently remove the clumsy varnish, and wax. That's it. It's criminal to reduce this piece to something that looks like it could have been built in 1980.

    • @BrickHouseVintageDIY
      @BrickHouseVintageDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Honestly, if you don't like painted furniture, we are not the channel for you. We paint pieces from all eras. Painting furniture is not relegated to modern pieces. People have been painting furniture for thousands of years... dating back to even ancient Egyptian days. In fact, during some periods of history, having painted furniture denoted wealth. The decision of whether or not we paint a piece of furniture has very little to do with it's age and everything to do with whether or not we think it will sell unpainted. This particular type of furniture is very common in our area and worth almost nothing. Dovetailing in and of itself does not mean a piece is valuable. We picked it up for around $10 because nobody else wanted it. Painted it sold immediately. We are not a charity for furniture... this is our business and how we provide for our family.

    Veja que insano. Eu cresci em uma casa onde as paredes eram assim. Não por modismo ou gosto. Simplesmente não havia dinheiro para uma pintura. Eu realmente odeio essa porcaria. Não entendo porque alguém trabalha duro para fazer uma coisa dessa.
