Can you please do a project where everything goes wrong and you end up burning it in the fire pit out back? I really need some inspiration on how to properly end a failed project. Thank you! Oh, and great video on the Steamer Trunk. It was a delight to watch.
Ha!! Absolutely! I’ve got a pile of those projects lingering in the depths of the shop. (Hmm…that might actually make for a great video 🤔)

Answers to common questions:
1) No, the opening scene was not staged. It was real and it hurt.
2) The products I used on the leather components is called Howard’s Feed’n’Wax, the green stain color was Sherwin Williams Woodscapes exterior solid wood stain (#6160 Best Bronze), the lacquer I used is Deft in satin finish and the interior sealing product I used was Modge Podge but I would recommend a water based acrylic sealer instead. It did ok for this application but the acrylic is a better overall sealer.
3) Yes, I am also disappointed that the tray footage was lost but I will be happy to make a video specifically on trunk inserts the next time one comes into the shop.

What is the name of the sealer you used on the inside?
I used Modge Podge on this one, and it’ll be fine for this specific trunk, but I would prefer to use a water based acrylic topcoat in satin. It’s stronger, seals better and lasts longer 👍
Is that just Howard's out of the bottle for the leather?
Yep! Good old Howard’s straight out of the bottle. Works really well. 👍
Yes Please!!! I was all into this video and BAM! there went the part I actually was looking forward to watching ad I have 2 trunks here which are easily 100yrs old and am looking to get it fixed/restored or doing it myself. A video of the trays would be nice Thanks 😊

I've watched all of the restoration videos on UA-cam. Yes, all of them (sarcasm). And this is THE first one that I've ever, EVER seen with a be safe with power tools and refer to the MSDS for any chemicals. While I may catch crap for this from commenters, safety is a real thing. Kudos for bringing attention to it.

Thanks! Looks great. I just bought the same trunk and someone in the FB trunk group said that;s not leather around the edges but a compressed fiber / fake leather. It sure holds up well so that's a good thing.
THANK YOU. I'm buying this 1896 trunk that will need a restoration, and I was very daunted by the idea of removing all the hardware and possibly damaging it. But I'll just leave it on and do what you have done!
i am now working on my 5th steamer trunk. yurs looks very good. i love doing this stuff. this one i have now is a chas t wilt 1876. very large. was a mess. think the cleaning is over. now to the repairs. thanks you did a great job.

My wife and I just bought a wardrobe steamer trunk for $4 at an estate sale and are going to fix it up. This video is an inspiration. Any advice?
Also, I'm a typewriter guy and I clean them, fix them and make them pretty again. I have heard that described with so many different "re-" words that I don't believe any of them mean the same thing to any two people.

My advice is to sit down with a cup of coffee (or some other beverage of choice) and just kick back and look the piece over. Stare at it, picture it in different places throughout your home and just let the ideas flow.
If you do decide to change up the colors/tones, just make sure you do so with a nod to the era it came from 👍

That interior reminds me of depression era flour bag cloth kinda. Cool trunk. For some reason you remind me of halfway between Broken Taps and Black Bear Forge in how you present in the videos. I love what I see on here.

Enjoy your videos. It would be helpful to tell the products you use. For example the glue you applied to the fabric on the inside of the lid and the oil and cleaner you used on the wood. Great projects. I love to clean and restore old things. Satisfying. Thx

Great video - I do the same painting & etc as u do - I bought a $25 Chicago grinder, cutter tool from Harbor Freight to cut the nails out of the inside when I replaced the old nails . U did a great job …thanks for showing your results ..

How to restore/waterproofing/refurbish a steamer trunk for outside usage/ storage/ seating area on patio?
First time restoring a steamer trunk. I have a couple questions and maybe you could give recommendations?
Some of the metal is cracked and sharp. What would you do to make it safer?
Rotted wood on some of the bottom. Would you use a wood hardener ?
Would you say it’s better to deal with shellac or poly?

Hi Serina. When it comes to cracked and sharp tin work, if it’s soft and flexible, I sneak a little CA glue (super glue) underneath and tap all down and flat with a soft mallet. You also may be able to lightly hand sand the sharp edges with some sandpaper to smooth it over.
Rotted wood: if there is only a few small spots, some Hardner would work well and also some wood epoxy filler. If there’s a lot, you may just need to replace that portion altogether.
Shellac or Poly: I prefer to go with shellac because it’s a period correct product for old steamer trunks but it’s also reversible. Polyurethane is much thicker and more “plastic“ looking so I only use that on the interior when it’s absolutely necessary

Could you tell us what the Deft lacquer was used for? Did you use it in conjunction with the green stain? Or on the leather? Also, What oil & solvent?🤔
Great job on this. I agree with you that restoration is not always possible given the condition of the trunk and the skill of the restore. Your approach to make it. Congruent is quite good. I would like to know a little bit more about some of the actual reconstruction techniques you did use on this trunk. Why didn’t you find some replacement lever for the one missing strap holder? What product did you use for the leather conditioning? I will be sure to check out your other videos.
Thank you! I used a thinned down version of Howard’s Wax n Feed. It’s made for wood but does a great job on leather. Of course there are actual leather cleaning/conditioning products out there, but I find this works well and the bees wax leaves a nice luster. Plus, I always have a bottle of it laying around so that’s convenient!
The reason I didn’t replace any missing or damaged latches or fastening components was really due to budget. I do as much to each project as my clients can afford.

Hi Isaac, thanks again for another quality video and restoration. Love the color choice on this one. I am starting restoration of my grandfathers and this gave me some great ideas for the interior. Coincidently, the metal hardware for those side straps/handles is identical to what's on mine.
Ozone can kill those smells. It can be a bit harsh on livig things but definitely kills off smells pretty well without being too tough on things. Might be worth grabbing a can of it or nabbing a cheap ozone generator. It works great for getting that old car smell out of old cars, and cigarette smoke smell. Be sure to not be in the same room as the ozone, it is not safe to be around. It smells like danger

Thanks so much for amazing help and inspiration to get going with restoring our family steamer trunk. Ours first saw service when my husband’s grandfather was a musician aboard the Canadian Pacific cruise liners in the 1920s. Now it’s battered and bruised but your video encourages me to preserve the best of it for our descendants.
I have 3 different type trunks. One smaller but similar to this one. Two of them are metal but one is very light and has a clear plastic handle on it. That one, I will be putting Bondo on bottom because it has two small rust holes. Not sure how old they are. I wish I could find out.
I will be fixing them up for my two Children and the leather one for myself. Thank you for this video. I would have never known to use Stain on it.
All found on the side of the road. 1st one I foud 29 years ago, that one is metal but still very strong. 2nd on side of road about 13 years ago. 3rd one recently on side of road.
What paint would you use in one that's painted black on the outside? She wants a matte black.
Really enjoy your channel! I have several trunks, 1880's up through maybe 1910... Hump backs and flat tops. Anyway, several of them have the combination of lock, flip lock and straps. All of the straps on mine are missing or broken where they cross over the lip of the lid where they would buckle. Any suggestions on where to get replacement straps and buckles? Also, what is in the "secret sauce" of the oil that you put in the leather? Thanks!!! Can't wait for the next video!
Thanks man, I appreciate that! When I need leather components, I go to a local leather worker here in my area. They typically craft their own handmade products or components for saddles, bags, etc. but they’re happy to do smaller jobs like straps and buckles if they’ve got the time. It’s not over expensive either.
The product that I used on the leather components is called Howard’s Feed’n’Wax. It’s designed for wood but it works very well on leather too. Good luck 👍

I had to laugh when I saw the little accident in the beginning... I´ve just had one quite similar while building my trunk. Beautiful work.Thanks for the video.
When I took a book binding class in college they had us use acid free glues so it wouldn't degrade the paper over time. Is that a concern with finishing something like this too? Also, when I've used modge podge in the past it's ended up with a slightly tacky finish. Does using the matte finish eliminate that issue, or did you have to seal it with something else after to get rid of the tacky feel?
I’ve never had an issue with the glues before, but in most cases I seal it up with a secondary topcoat anyway.
On this particular project, I only used the matte Modge Podge; I didn’t seal it afterwards and it’s was completely smooth and tack-free.
I am restoring a steamer trunk and was wondering what color green you painted it with, the trunk Im working on is all metal, no wood showing other than the straps. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Love your restorations

Outstanding work, good you didn't have to deal with any rust. Curious, though, didn't see how you addressed the larger patches where exterior canvas was missing. Did you glue the canvas edges of the hole, then stain the canvas and exposed wood at once? How did that look when finished? Thanks.

I did indeed glue on some canvas patches. It was a little boring and pretty straightforward so I didn’t feel the need to film it. I’m certainly willing to do so on another video if you are interested.

@@hearthsidewoodworks That’s ok, no need to video that, just wondering how you solved that. When I run into canvas that badly damaged I strip it and finish the wood exterior with stain or tung oil. But I’d like to try your system, especially the SW stain on canvas, if I find a reasonable candidate.
At 21:11 you can see a canvas patch if you are looking for it. It really blends in if you are not!
What if you wanted to replace the leather straps? Would you have to remove the rivets and replace those too? Would it cause too much damage?
Thanks for this video! I am about to embark on restoring several trunks that have been in my family forever. If my kids had their way they would be in a landfill. I have hope after watching this. My question is what do recommend for cleaning the metal parts?
I just use a soft wire brush to clean off the metal. I prefer not to use a “cleaner“ because I like to keep the patina. I’m just looking to remove dirt and surface rust. Hope that was helpful. Good luck on your project and thanks for the question!

It is. Why they named it ‘bronze’ I have no idea. This is actually the same color I stained my house. It’s most definitely a moss/olive green.
I was wondering how much damage bleach spray will do to a trunk like that over time? Will it decay the wood and covering the same way it would clothes or paper if you don't neutralize it?
I have one I just got that's an old military trunk. Belber 1934 23-79a. I think it has canvas on it I have no idea how to restore it

Are you sure the green color was best bronze because that is a brown color?

I used a product called modge podge. Although it sealed everything up really well, I wasn’t super happy with the overall look of the finish.
Next time I’ll use a shellac and water based topcoat combo as I did in my first trunk video.

Yes, that color does have some brown tones, but much like you saw in the video, it dries more of an olive green when next to actual brown-browns.
