I threw together this little bench from an old headboard and the bottom of an armoire. I hope you like my process and learn a little something as well.

I'm blown away! In an industry where there is so much redundancy, thank you for bringing your style of ingenuity to the world of furniture art! Absolutely love you!
Carla, I hope you know how much your comments mean to me. There are a handful of you that are truly amazing and so encouraging. Thank you so much for taking the time to make the comments that you do.
Love that you actually created your piece from disparate parts, and had an attractive, useful and original result. Thumbs up. 😊👍👍👍
Thank you so much! I appreciate that!
Crazy Gothic result! Love it. Those repairs to repairs are so much more work than fixing it when it was broken.
Ugh. I know!!! Just leave it broken - I’ll fix it for you 😂
Look at you girl!! I feel like you are stepping out mora and more each time!! I love this!!
Thank you, Crys’Dawna! That means a lot coming from you!
Your pieces are always winners. Absolutely LOVED this frankenpiece, especially the stenciling on the backboard with the metallic accent. Your work is beautiful and inspiring! :-)
Thanks, Kim! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. The stenciling was my favorite part. It was just going to be too “blah” without it.
Such an elegant bench! Boris Karloff would be drinking his tea sitting on *this* bench. Just beautiful!
Ah! Thank you! That’s such a fun thought!
This was so transformed and music and descriptions made me so relaxed. You did a superior changeling child on this piece. Thank you.
Thank you, Nancy! I’m glad the music turned out ok! I was nervous picking one that was so “on theme”.
@@elegantupgrades go with your intuition.
Oh my goodness this is absolutely frighteningly amazing!!!! 💜💜💜
Thank you so much, Katherine!
Wonderful job girl! Great imagination, love your stuff. Please be aware that MDF sawdust is carcinogenic to lungs, so please use the appropriate PPE and if possible do all that cutting and sanding out of the house. Be well and safe, looking forward to more of your creations.
Thanks for that, Jane! Glad I don’t typically use it 😳 Looks like I’ll be going the all wood route next time.
Amazing transformation! I love watching you make something new out of something old. It turned out beautifully.
I’m so glad you liked it, Kay! Thank you!
I love this Piece ...the back looks like bat wings and with the Wing look and the gothic Theme and Then The raised stencil totally makes this bench absolutely gorgeous! You're amazing Taryn! 🥰👍❣️
Haha! Melanie of The Colored Caboose said the same thing and now all I see is batwings when I look at it! It was accidentally on theme 😂 Thank you, Debra!
If you were going for creepy and disturbing your special effects were right on. Now the item itself, showed so many useful techniques that I loved, buuut with the filming and all the serious colors, it sure brought a sleep space for a creature from maybe, Transylvania to mind.
Thank you so much! I was trying to balance staying on theme for the challenge and also stay true to my videos. I’m glad it still provided techniques and thoughts of an elusive Transylvanian creature.
Freaking Franken- Fabulous!!!
lots of great info about proper drawer repair. I really love how that headboard backer looks like bat 🦇 wings!
Haha, now I’m only going to see bat wings when I look at it 😂
The vibe I get from the piece , Dark shadows .....show from the 1960s elegant and spooky
Oh! Perfect! Thank you. I forgot all about Dark Shadows, I’m gonna have to see if I can pull up some episodes.
@@elegantupgrades Tubi has the full series.
Thank you!

Now I just need an old castle!!!
Looking great ! So you can paint and DIY 😮
Thanks! Yes, I love all the things 😊
The metallic over the stencil is a great tip! Turned out great!
Oh good, I’m glad you got a little something from it! Thanks so much!

Thank you, Teresa! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Taryn, I swear you speak to my heart all the time 💞 My Nana just passed & she her headboard/footboard is almost the exact same as this headboard. I was wanting to do something special with it since I’m not going to use it and you just showed me the best idea that I can do to keep it in the family for years to come. I absolutely LOVE what you’ve done with this. It’s stunningly beautiful! You’re definitely 1 talented little lady 💖💞💝💕
Lindsey!!! You just made my day. Thank you for that. I love that you are finding use for something you love and will remind you of your Nana.
Just wow! That turned out amazing!!!

@@elegantupgrades it's good for women to know they can do things like that. I think it is empowering!!!
Wow! Great job and that trim looks great!
Yeah! So glad I came across it down one of my Amazon Rabbit Hole Adventures.

It came out Amazing love everything you did to this piece looks fantastic 💜🕉
Oh, thank you so much, Reta! 🥰
W O W!! As I mentioned last night, I just found your channel (and learned of Chalk Mountain Paint) and love your work!! Especially your blending. I love blending colors on my pieces and follow some really great furniture artists, especially who have kinda mastered the art of blending, for inspiration and definitely adding you to that list. I’m amazed at how easily CMP blends and (like in this piece) black with the bright colors. There are other brands, which are great products for blending, but sometimes you have to be careful with black bc it tends to muddy. Thank you for your videos, sharing your work and inspiration! And in case you can’t tell I’ve kinda binge watched your stuff this weekend.😉💜
Thank you so very much, Ashley!!! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave such a lovely comment. I’m so glad you are enjoying my content.

It’s so cool‼️🧟♀️🕷I’d like to see it finished in color❗️
Thank you, Margaret! And I know, I was trying to stay on theme for the challenge. I swear my regular videos are all in color 😂 All the still photos at the end were in color. And I’ll post more on Instagram.
You did an amazing job Melanie!! I love that you took junk pieces and made even fabulous!
Thank you, Sandy!

Thank you, Glenda!
This was GREAT!
Thank you so much, Lisa!
Simply beautiful and you're workmanship is so impressive. You keep pushing the envelope as you continue to show us your many skills as a furniture artist. Do you know if viewers vote for the best piece done during the Halloween Challenge. Don't understand what the challenge is really all about?
Seriously, thank you so much! And thank you for the coffees!!! I’m not sure how Kara is going to pick the winner yet. It was her challenge and I’m just happy to be included with other flippers adding a bit of a creative spin on things.
Love the bench
Thank you, Kathleen!
Very cool piece!
Thanks, Velma!!!
FYI, denatured alcohol and/or heat can really help to soften/remove bad glue-ups
Ooo, I’ll have to try that the next time I want to light a piece on fire for being stubborn 🤣. I really hope I don’t encounter one this bad again, but it’s good to have this info in case I do. Thank you, Elizabeth.
Never throw out metal pieces ... great necklaces
Haha- I don’t. They are in a container with about a billion other random pieces until I find a use for them…. I haven’t done a necklace yet, though!
As always amazing
Thanks so much, Donna!
Amazing job!!!!
Thank you, Sarah!
Just love it!
Thank you, Cynthia! I’m so glad!
Great job!
Thanks, Tracy!
Tell me more about your small plunge saw! I had to construct this week too and my husband's circular saw scared me more than a ghost lol. Wow, so much prep work but worth every minute you spent. Perfectly constructed, blended, and spooky vibe achieved!
Yes, you did an amazing job on yours! It’s just a little circular saw from Ryobi. Once you get the hang of them they are easy peasy.
Beautiful.
Thank you, Polly!
Beautiful
Thank you, Marion!
If you really want to prevent seepage into the board then you can use pva wood glue diluted 1:5 then 1:4 then 1:3 then 1:2 . Let the first lot dry before going onto next dilution etc until the last dilution. There after you will not only have no seepage but a more solid harder wood . This is obviously for the open edges. I think I've made myself clear.🙃
Barbara! This is a great tip, thank you!!! And yes, absolutely clear.
gorgeous.
Thanks, Tamara!
Love it! What was that metallic paint you were using? Got to get some of that. Beautiful!
Ah! Yes, I left that out of the description- thank you-
amzn.to/3Gf4YSS
love your painting. so beautiful. I also love your deco papers on zazzle but the shipping was way too much. it was more than the 4 papers I wanted.
Thank you, Terri! I appreciate that 😊 I agree shipping is a bit high on Zazzle. When I order from them I try to order a bunch so it’s not so crazy. I think they must have gone up as well because I just checked and it was $14 🤯
Love this piece. I just found your channel and am loving your creative ability. You are very talented. Why do you prefer Chalk Mountain Poly???
Thank you, Carol! I am a Chalk Mountain ambassador so I almost always use their products because they go well together. But my favorite thing about their poly is how hard it gets and I’ve never had it cloud up. With that said, I’ve also used Varathane’s satin poly for decoupage with excellent results. It’s just not quite as durable as an overall finish in my opinion. But it’s definitely my second favorite poly sealer.
Awesome!!!!
Thanks, Karen!!!
Wow. You did a wonderful repurpose of items. I absolutely love it!! One question, when you used the stencil on the front of the bench, you said you shrunk the stencil. Did you cut it down from a larger stencil or what? I’m new at this.
Thank you 😊
Thank you, Karel! I have a cricut machine and used my original stencil to create a smaller version of it.
I loved the raised stencils and the edge banding you used. Did you say that came from Amazon? The edge banding...I didn't see it in the description box. Anyway, some painters know how to blend and some don't. You definitely do. Great job! Girl, why didn't you use your heat gun on that stubborn removal piece. That would have helped you tremendously, despite that boatload of nails. That pained me to see you have to deal with that. A+ for perseverance! 🙂👍 New subscriber, here.
Holly! Thank you for bringing the edge banding to my attention- I completely left it out of the description. I’ve just updated it there, but I’ll link it here as well so you don’t have to go back:
amzn.to/3B3gpt6
And thank you so much for subscribing! So happy to have you here. And ugh! I have no idea why I wasn’t using the heat gun on the removal- sigh* I think I was just so irritated about the whole thing 🤣
You always do such beautiful work. May I ask how one shrinks a stencil?
Thank you, Tawney! I did it on my cricut machine. The original was just too large for the space so I cut a smaller version.
wow just right !
Thanks, Patricia!
So cool 😎
Thanks so much, Julianne!
Oh yah!!! ❤💯
🎃
It's amazing, I love the raised stencil and the way you blended the colors so that it was not just flat black. You are so brave to just cut those sides off, I would be afraid to ruin it. Do you have a buyer?
I haven’t even listed it yet, Rebecca. I ended up having to take an unexpected trip out of town so I actually had to bring it with me to get it finished for the challenge 😂
@@elegantupgrades You are my favorite to win, but you were last time in the ugly duckling challenge too.
That bendable trim won't crack if you heat it as you're applying it.
Thanks for the tip, Wanda 😊
🎃
It’s cute
Thank you! And thanks for hanging out in the premier!
Glad u won.
What brand and color is the metallic paint? It’s not in your list.
So sorry! I updated the description box, but I’ll add a link here as well, it’s a rustoleum metallic- amzn.to/3Gf4YSS
Can you please tell me what kind of saw you used and the name, thanks. Great work by the way👍
Wow! Love it!❤
It’s just a Ryobi circular saw, nothing special. And thanks!
waouh
I have a few questions about two small DIY projects. Would you be so kind if you had time to answer these for me? How can I communicate with you if I only have an email address, UA-cam, Facebook and WhatsApp?
Of course! You can email:
info@elegant-upgrades.com
I think I've diagnosed your problem. You suffer from a very enlarged creative lobe somewhere in your brain. What I don't know for sure is if you control it or it controls you. :)
This was very unusual but so interesting. I have a bunch of questions but way too many to ask here in the comments. My main one has to do with the spackling compound you mixed up for the raised stencil. Do you worry it may chip off or otherwise not be durable? And to make it stand out, could you mix some paint in with it?
As always, thanks for uploading all these tutorials.
Haha, that’s definitely my problem 😂. It’s serious. I may need to see a doctor about it- I’m certain I have no control.
As far as the joint compound, it’s very durable. I’ve used it on several pieces now without any issue at all. It’s used in between drywall sheets to then be covered with paint so I feel like my application wouldn’t be any more wear than the wear it would get on a house. (I hope that makes sense) I have mixed paint with it and it tints quite nicely.
Hey! Enjoy your vids. Your speakers are not putting out clear sound.
Thanks Nancy. Yeah, sorry, I had a to take an unexpected trip out of town and had to finish up the video without my regular setup.
