    Great video, David! Before I started watching, I tried to "guess" how you made it. It was right about you making a standard frame with really wide sides and then cutting the oval out. I couldn't figure out how you would cut out the center because I know you don't have a scroll saw. I was wondering, "Is he going to use the laser?" Oh yeah, jigsaws exist. I've never had really any good results using those. I think it's probably the blades/settings I've used. haha I'm going to try using the jigsaw more often.

    Nice frame. One question though. It appears that you cut the spline with grain that runs the same direction as the grove it fits in. The splines are supposed to be at a right angle to the grove.

    • @claudegraham4770
      @claudegraham4770 4 роки тому

      Roland Kuhn Nice catch RK. I toyed with the idea of pointing out the faux pas to aid fellow woodcrafters in their future splining ventures, but you had it covered. Although for this project it probably won’t have much long-term impact, the grain direction of the spline matters greatly as size and twisting forces increase. Be advised all, solid wood splines should (almost) always be cut from cross grain material for strength across the joint.....long grain can easily split thus rendering the joint parted.

    • @davidkroon734
      @davidkroon734 4 роки тому

      It has to do with the properties of an ellipse. The two bolts you place first are at the foci of the ellipse. These two points are at a combined distance from the edge at all times. This property has been used from woodworking to breaking up kidney stones to espionage. You video shows a practical application that I can work with our shop teachers for students to carry out.

    I need to buy a good jigsaw. You can really tell a difference in the quality of cut in yours and the one I have.

    • @FireAngelOfLondon
      @FireAngelOfLondon 4 роки тому +3

      Make sure you get decent blades too, they make just as much difference. I recently bought a Bosch jigsaw after using a very cheap one for years. I started to get better results straight away even though I was using up the old stock of cheap blades. Once I started using Bosch and Makita blades in the new jigsaw the results were a whole lot better, so no more cheap no-brand blades for me. If you have old cheap blades in stock don't make the mistake I made, throw them in the bin and get the good ones.
