Not impossible as long as you have a residential address for tax purposes. But pretty soon companies will start giving out about GDPR and find some excuses.
I've encouraged a few of my younger friends from the States to go overseas and teach English; I did it myself from 1984-1987 in Japan and I was in my early 30s. Great experience, and while the cost of living in Japan was much higher than Vietnam ever has been, the salaries were proportionately higher as well for teaching. And I was able to save money to bring back to the States, as well. Unfortunately, most people (younger folks even) remain much too attached to family and familiarity and the prospect of living overseas, while exciting, remains daunting for most folks. Oh, well...choose you life I always say.

My guy that might have worked in the 80s where the economies were booming. I was in South Vietnam during the war (1969-70). I returned in 2000 and in 2013. I have friends there, some who are in the Vietnamese army. I have a very positive view of the country and the Vietnamese people. I hope that I can one day return once all this Covid19 crap is over with.
We were traveling all over Vietnam over a year ago and left right before the pandemic hit the world. At first, I was very apprehensive about safety, sanitation, service, etc, but was pleasantly surprised that everything exceeded expectations. One thing is to watch out for taxi drivers in Hanoi. He charged us 420,000 dong from Noi Bai airport to Hanoi Opera House. The reverse trip on Grab cost about a third. But Other than this, we can't wait to come back.
You got lucky - I went to Hanoi on early December 2022 and I got totally ripped off by a shady taxi driver. He originally stated 500,000 dong which was comparable to the hotel taxi. So I agreed. Middle of the way he said he had to look up the address of the hotel and increased the price to 700,000 dong - I had no choice as I was already in middle of nowhere at midnight with heavy rain. Last time I am taking taxi in VN - only grab.
I used to live just west of Ba Trieu street and east of the Ho Bay Mau lake in Hanoi, and there was this old lady I used to go to for lunch before work. I'd pay 20k VND (a little less than $1) for a plate of dried fish, chicken, pork, these meat/veggie rolls, rice, and whatever else I wanted. More often than not I couldn't finish my plate, and I felt bad, until I discovered the lady had take-out boxes. So I'd go there midday for lunch and have leftovers for dinner. This was about a 2 minute walk from my Vietnamese-style apartment. Good times.
Can eat well 15 to 50k every single day at least 100 places in Hanoi locals might pay 30 instead of 35k for rice chicken pork eggs tofu a couple veggies more than u can eat, somtimes 2 meals for 30k
@J D well, depend what palces you visit and how much you spend. I hang with Vietnamise friends and girls, we always use local places for eat or fun. I was ok with 1000USD per month. ofcourse, the girls will always find a cheaper place and they will bargen for me. Cheap place dont need to mean bad place. That is why I love Vietnam and people there. It is easy to spend money if you are in downtown, hanging with people whihc will rip you off as you are white.. I was work till 17.00h, so, not so many time to spend outside as everything is done at 20-21.00. I notice that they dring very fast so we finish even sooner. I live and work in Cu Chi, not so many expencive places there.
@J D mate, Tiger beer and local vege + local pork or beef meat are cheap in Cu Chi. They do not import. girls are also domestic ;) it is all about that.
Hi Alex, I am Vietnamese. I am impressed to see you eating with chopsticks and enjoyed the local food. I am very picky with food. I cook most of my Vietnamese food every day. I often get sick when I eat out. I don’t know why even in American restaurants that is why I don’t eat out. I love to cook. I like to cook food from different countries. For each country I visit I bought a cook book and start cooking. I found that each country has it own delicious food. International food is my love.
It's always so good because of soup powder flavouring, fish sauce and MSG which they give the rather more appetising name 'sweet powder' (bột ngọt). Vietnamese cooking is actually really easy once you can translate the names
Da Nang is also known as beach paradise. I was there for 2 weeks and had the best time of my life for a fraction of a cost. People are friendly, food is exceptionally out of this world and the scenery is breath taking. Great place, highly recommended. If you can live there with a long term visa, more power to you !
Yes its very affordable in VN i can't wait to return when the air corridor reopens i seem to give more money away to the poor than spend on myself. I can't believe more westerners dont go to VN because it truly is an amazing country and such friendly people. 🙏

After covid clears eventually. I want to go back to Vietnam. Rent an apartment for three months. I was there in 2014 for 5 weeks. Loved the food the people and the beautiful photo opportunities.
Example: 1. Morning: bánh mì 15.000-30.000 VNĐ (1.000VNĐ = 1k), coffee 15-25k 2. Some fruits for better life: 15-25k/kg guava, 20-30k/dragon or 12-15k/kg banana... 3. Lunch: 30-35k for rice + meat/fish + vegtable. Its for full lunch in local restaurant; Or hủ tiếu - bánh canh - bún riêu - bún thịt nướng: 30-40k. There is one local market near Bùi Viện street- Nguyễn Thái Bình market ưith many local restaurant there for you choosing. 4. Dinner: cơm sườn/ cơm tấm (broken rice with grill meat/ chicken): 30-50k -> (free for ice tea in south of Vietnam and Sai Gon). 5. Beer or coffee for relax after working day: 15k - 100k depend where you enjoy it 🙂

Had an all expenses paid year long vacation there in the late 1960s. Airport was real busy. Got to roam the countryside and visit various cities. Was glad to come home.

It looks like a very pleasant and affordable place to retire. I'm working in Saudi Arabia right now and I'll try to visit Da Nang before my contract ends since it's much closer than traveling from my home in Florida.

If you want to make over 5000 a month, you should work in Hanoi or HCMC. Danang is fab if u r content with 2000 to 4000 and want to pay 200 to 400 in rent but likely 80% make under 3000 there. I know guys making 4000 for 18 hours at day jobs in Hanoi with medical insurance and sometimes free housing. Danang is a better place to live but HCMC and Hanoi have more money. Even Long Bien and Bac Ninh are more lucrative. But with Hoi An and the beaches, Danang is a great place to live with much less traffic and better air quality.
My Step father did three tours bombing all over Central and North Vietnam...He never talked about where he hit or any of his missions...he REFUSED to sign my early permission slip for me to join the military...wow...he went off on me....I just came back from that god forsaken place...I'll be damned if you wind out over there, too !!! He made me wait one year...by then the war was totally over...He never let his hatred of the Viet Cong and the NVA leave his heart...I was way more open minded, due to my Mother , who survived WW 2 Germany as a child...She counseled me that it was the everyday people who truly suffered the horrors of war, not the rich and powerful...I saw things in other countries during my time in the service...I always applied her philosophy to the areas I was operating in...Bless the Vietnamese people for bouncing back and becoming one of Southeast Asia's best self -sufficient country....

That said, I'm able to live a very comfortable life for less than $1,500 per month. After going through Ninja Teacher to get my TESOL certification, I was able to earn substantially more than that each month teaching at local high schools and corporate learning centers. Fortunately, due to my military retirement and the residual income from my book sales, I no longer have to rely on teaching. The only reasons I'm posting this comment is to confirm that Alex is an honest man and that Ninja Teacher is the best option to take if you want to teach English overseas. You can rent a daily, monthly or year for your motorbike in Danang. It based on your plan or how many day will you stay in here. it's very convenient for rent a daily. The cost is around 80.000-100.000VND per day. if you have been here for long. I highly recommend you to rent a monthly or year for your motorbike because it is low cost compare to other. So see you in Danang city once day.
The cost of living will be significantly higher in the bigger cities like Hanoi and especially Saigon, at least where rent is concerned. And what about health insurance?

The way Vietnam charges you for your cost of living there is just a fraction of what it costs in Europe and America. Vietnamese people are not materialistic like others in capitalist countries. Otherwise, they would charge you big time.

Yeah, but there is like a 6 hour time difference.
For me, it was 12hr but it still sort of worked out. Emergent calls at 2am but able to do project work during the VN daytime.

If you earn $1500-2000/month from your retirement you can live very comfortable and enjoy traveling to any places in Vietnam.

When I travelled through the south I was paying on average 15k-20k for noodle soup, 5k-10k for beer

Had an all expenses paid year long vacation there in the late 1960s. Airport was real busy. Got to roam the countryside and visit various cities. Was glad to come home.

It looks like a very pleasant and affordable place to retire. I'm working in Saudi Arabia right now and I'll try to visit Da Nang before my contract ends since it's much closer than traveling from my home in Florida.

13 months I lived in Hue. BUT Da Nang is a favorite of mine. And yes HUDA Beer is the best.

If you want to make over 5000 a month, you should work in Hanoi or HCMC. Danang is fab if u r content with 2000 to 4000 and want to pay 200 to 400 in rent but likely 80% make under 3000 there. I know guys making 4000 for 18 hours at day jobs in Hanoi with medical insurance and sometimes free housing. Danang is a better place to live but HCMC and Hanoi have more money. Even Long Bien and Bac Ninh are more lucrative. But with Hoi An and the beaches, Danang is a great place to live with much less traffic and better air quality.
I would go back to Vietnam in a heartbeat, the food itself is enough reason ❤️

My Step father did three tours bombing all over Central and North Vietnam...He never talked about where he hit or any of his missions...he REFUSED to sign my early permission slip for me to join the military...wow...he went off on me....I just came back from that god forsaken place...I'll be damned if you wind out over there, too !!! He made me wait one year...by then the war was totally over...He never let his hatred of the Viet Cong and the NVA leave his heart...I was way more open minded, due to my Mother , who survived WW 2 Germany as a child...She counseled me that it was the everyday people who truly suffered the horrors of war, not the rich and powerful...I saw things in other countries during my time in the service...I always applied her philosophy to the areas I was operating in...Bless the Vietnamese people for bouncing back and becoming one of Southeast Asia's best self -sufficient country....

I met Alex 6 years ago when I moved to Vietnam with the goal of teaching English while working on my books. At the time, Ninja Teacher was already up and running. Based on my research, they offered the most support in getting started in the business.
I wasn't disappointed. Alex is a brilliant young man who doesn't take his aspirations lightly. I was was greeted by him and his crew with a very warm welcome and they have always been there when I needed them.
Some of you may believe that his videos are slanted or exaggerated. They are not. Yes, anyone can live outside of their means, but Alex provides honest information on how to thrive in Vietnam. If you're not frivolous or impulsive, you can easily get by on what he has outlined in this video. That said, I wanted to share my personal experience with you in order to give you a point of reference.
As I mentioned, I've been here for 6 years. I have a wife and young daughter. We live in a large apartment. My rent is about $350 per month with utilities, but it is a big place capable of sustaining a family. My monthly expenditures for food and necessities rarely exceeds $1,000 per month and I'm a spendthrift. Impartial to the cuisine, I prefer Western food which is much more expensive here. That said, I'm able to live a very comfortable life for less than $1,500 per month.
After going through Ninja Teacher to get my TESOL certification, I was able to earn substantially more than that each month teaching at local high schools and corporate learning centers. Fortunately, due to my military retirement and the residual income from my book sales, I no longer have to rely on teaching.
The only reasons I'm posting this comment is to confirm that Alex is an honest man and that Ninja Teacher is the best option to take if you want to teach English overseas. If you think this is a false post, check me out. You will find that I have never endorsed anyone before. I'm only doing it now because Alex and his team changed my life for the better.

You can rent a daily, monthly or year for your motorbike in Danang. It based on your plan or how many day will you stay in here. it's very convenient for rent a daily. The cost is around 80.000-100.000VND per day. if you have been here for long. I highly recommend you to rent a monthly or year for your motorbike because it is low cost compare to other. So see you in Danang city once day.
