- Oil Change procedure for 1995, 96, 97, 98, 99 & 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 & 2500. Lets do an oil and filter change on this 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck with a Magnum V8. Whether it's a Magnum or Hemi 1500 or 2500 changing the oil on a Dodge Ram using Mopar parts is a really easy way to save money and keep your Ram truck working properly. The dealer charges too much so a DIY approach is better. Both the 5.2 Liter 318 or the 5.7 Liter 360 Magnum motors use the same procedure.

The plug that was in the drain pan had stripped threads. That might explain why I have had to keep a close watch on the oil level since I have had the truck.
I am also going to replace the temp sensors, thermostat housing and thermostat after I do a more thorough flushing if the cooling system.
Thinking it might need a new water pump and maybe a head gasket.
Not sure I want to go to the expense snd or time involved in head gasket. Also debating about switching the water pump not knowing whether it needs a head gasket or not.
That truck is CLEAN!

I'm the original owner of a 1998 5.2L Dodge Quad Cab Truck with 78k miles. Several years ago, the only part I replaced was a leaky water pump and I fixed a loose back window latch. However, my power door locks are lately giving me problems. It's not a priority to fix. I can lock the truck manually.
Like you, I have no need to buy a new truck. Compared to the new trucks, these old trucks are much more easier to repair.
I had a similar issue with my power lock buttons a few years back and this is how I fixed it. Take the lock switch out of the door. You can do that without removing the entire door panel. Clean up the contacts with some 500 grit sand paper. Then shoot some WD-40 into all the holes in the switch to clear out all the years of dust and junk that gets inside them. Then drown the switch in a bath of soapy water. Slosh it around really good to get all the crap out of it. Then rinse off and allow to dry for a couple of days. It should be back to working condition once it dries. It worked for me doing it this way.
Modern DIY Projects Thanks for the tip. However, I hear both switches are activating the solenoids but not moving the door locks. Most likely the linkage needs lubricant. I live in Central Florida and the humidity takes a beating on mechanical parts and, since retiring, I don't drive it as often as I did when it was newer. My truck is used mostly as a convenience to pick up big items. I do try to run it at highway speeds. It has been garaged most of its life.

Some say to ring the new filter gasket with oil for a better deal and anti seize aid?
I did. I always do that to prevent it sticking to the block.

The 1997 5.2 does not have an EGR so I can't really guide you on that. But it shouln't be a hard process. These trucks are easy to work on.

I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 i am not the original owner I don't know how many people have owned it before me but I personally have had to change the entire fuel system at least twice is there any saying that I'm doing wrong is there anything that you would recommend
I have never heard of any inherent issue with the fuel system on these trucks. Most likely the previous owners were using crap gasoline. I would suggest to go through and clean out your fuel system (flush it and clean out sediments in your gas tank) then use only quality gas going forward. I also use injector cleaner every few thousand miles to keep everything cleaned out.
I am unable to add oil. I took out the old oil and now something is blocking the funnel from going inside and adding oil
You can't place the funnel inside the valve cover. There are lifters blocking you from doing that. Hold the funnel with one hand and fill with the other hand.
How's it going man, I have two questions about my 96 Dodge ram, it's only the 3.9 V6 with a utility bed, so stock it weighs close to 5500 lb if that has any tie into anything I'm going to say, but for one my brake fluid seems to be running through extremely quick, would there be any issues I should look out for or is that just because it's stopping such a heavy vehicle. Second question would be any advice for getting the engine to quiet down? It's been driving like a champ for 2 years, but runs super loud especially in idle
The V6 for 96 was extremely rattly. I test drove it when I was buying my truck and I could not stand the loud rattle from the V6 so I chose the 318 instead. Much quieter and smoother in my opinion. Not a race engine but that's not what I was looking for. Use a thicker oil and maybe that will quiet it down. You could also see if the valves are out of adjustment. For the Brakes there is NO reason to have to add fluid unless your pads are wearing out. You may have a leak somewhere. If you can't find a leak it may be internal to the brake booster. That is a hidden leak that is hard to locate at time. My truck would be definition heavier than yours since I have the 318 and I don't hardly ever have to add brake fluid. These trucks were pretty much the same with just engine and trans changes.

It has the original seal, it has never been changed. It really is not a big problem. It gets a little wet but that's about it. It's not a big enough leak for me to go through all that trouble to replace it at this point.
Question what type of oil do you use with the truck having around 100,000 miles you said , are you still using conventional or have you switched to synthetic?
All I ever use is conventional. These Magnum motors were not made for anything else.

Thanks.... From what I have read it all says to stay with conventional. If you change to synthetic after all these miles you can start getting leaks, specially from the rear main. Synthetic tends to find a way out more than conventional oils will do. You can get a high mileage conventional oil, that's fine.

318 & 360 CID will take 5 qts 10W-30 oil.
Just watched your oil catch can video and I’m wondering what did the bracket that you used looked like for your Dodge Ram
IIRC It was just a flat piece of metal that I bent to fit under the cowl, then I added a refrigerator water filter bracket to hold the catch can in place. I think later I added a radiator hose clamp also for more stability since it was somewhat loose in the water filter bracket.

Truck the steering is a little wobble what you suggest I do to fix that .
It depends what you mean by "Little Wobble". It may just be a minor steering box issue or some from suspension wear. You can have an alignment place check it out and give you suggestions. On the other hand it could be the "Death Wobble". There are tons of videos showing what that is and some show how to fix it. Look up Death Wobble Dodge Ram and you can decide how to proceed.
I have a 97, 4 wheel drive I think I can change the oil myself. Everything will be the same, correct?.

Where’s the fuel filter located?
I believe the fuel filters are located inside the gas tanks and they rarely ever have a problem.
In the gas tank, part of the fuel pump assembly. Only needs replacing when it fails.
I have a 1997 ram2500 5 9v8 magnum, wit only 73840 on the dash. What is the best motor oil for that engine?
The 5.2 and 5.9 are practically identical engines. I have used all sorts of normal oils with excellent results. I don't suggest synthetics because the can cause leaks through the rear main and other places. Stick to normal oil and you'll be fine. Use 10W-30 which is what is recommended in the manual, and the brand is totally up to you. These are stout, bullet proof engines that don't complain much if to take care of them.

Low cooling? Yeah, that is a common problem. I have to recharge mine every few years. These old fittings leak little bit all the time. I have another video that shows you how to recharge the AC and I use this truck as a test subject. It's a review video of the gauges, but you'll see how I do it if you have questions on how it should be done. I has question!! I own a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 V8, for some reason, I still haven’t figured out why, but when ever it rains , it doesn’t wanna start, and I can’t figure out why
On these Second Generation Ram trucks the distributor is located directly under the windshield cowl. Most likely some water is dripping down from the cowl and getting the distributor wet on rainy days so it wont start. When it dries it's all good again. Try to find that water leak issue and you should be fixed.

Yes I have. The only tune up on these trucks is to replace the plugs, change the air filter and clean the throttle body. Not much really. All of this is super easy to do. Don't bother with the plug wires and distributor unless you want a LOT of work. It is buried under the firewall and is really hard to replace. Mine is still fine after all these years. I wont mess with it unless I have an ignition issue.

I have heard many folks tell me about their problems with their Ram trucks. I have been very fortunate with mine. Can't complain. Only problem I ever had was a bad water pump. That's why I hang onto it!
Could you send me a video or pictures of how the 2 hoses for the heater core are ran to the egine and which goes where? Mine are cut and bypassed due to heater core being busted and id like to fix it but need to know how my 2 hoses are ran from heater core to ingine and where they hook up at

Also, are the tiny protrusions on the thermostat housing just for lining the gasket, or are they supposed to fit in depressions in the manifold.
My 95 does not have the depressions.
@@rickeykeeton4770 The Oil Drain plug has a plastic ring that is part of the plug. It is not removable. As for the Thermostat, I can't give you a good answer. The last time I changed my thermostat was 20 years ago so you can understand why I don't remember what that looks like. I think it was flat but I have no real recollection of it.
How offernt do you change your oil.
Every 2000 to 2500 Miles. Oil is cheap so I like to keep my engine in top notch condition.

Yes, the body did not change for the entire run of the truck. Only the interior changed from 98 onward.
If i just bought a 1999 second hand from a guy whose girlfriend burned it an its got like 220,000 miles should i worry about fixing my oil filter like yours

OK, hang on. I thought you were just making a joke post. Didn't know you were serious. If your truck is as you say, seriously I would not mess with it too much. A mistake a lot of people make is they try to correct ALL the mistakes made by the previous owner. Getting too deep into a really old vehicle with high miles can bite you in the ass. Just do the basic maintenance and not much more. Stirring up things could bring up hidden evils that you are not aware of. You could literally ruin the truck if you give it too much care. Just a regular oil change should be fine.
Do you have to put some oil in the filter before putting it on or not?
You do not have to put oil in the filter before installing it. I think that is something some DIY guys came up with because they think it will help the motor, but I have never heard of any mechanic adding oil to the filter before installing it. I have never done it and have never had a problem.
